Many new Sights...
The 1973-74 school year once again started with a decrease in enrollment ; with a reduc tion of 244 students. The new campus radio station, KMNR, didn't start broadcasting until la te in the semester, the new Chemical Engi neering building didn 't o pe n on time, and an upheaval of ca mpus leadership took place as Me rl Baker resigned. But all was not lost , for the Miners now had pinball machines, their beau tiful ne w quadrangle fini shed , and KMNR finished up the semester by broadcasting 24 hours a day. So the Miners took on the ne w semester.

Miners together for 2nd All School Party
The second annual All School Party Weekend (Sept. 21-23) was a great success for all of those who participated. Friday started off with Rick and Anne Albin again coming back to UMR for a workshop and concert that all enjoyed. Friday was also the setting for a street dance organized by most of the fraternities and sororities on campus for anyone and everyone. Then Saturday night GDI organized a dance at Echo Valley that was also a campus wide affair. Great cooperation was shown by all the Miners in having fun on their 2nd All School Party Weekend.

John Chappel as Clarence Darrow
Governor Christopher (Kit) Bond and Dr. William Danforth were the two main speakers for the 4th annual College Government Conference held on the UMR campus. Topics discussed in the conference ranged from "State and Local Government" to "Future Employment Trends". Then on Oct. 17, John Chappel returned to the UMR campus to give his performance of "Clarence Darrow-Defender of the Damned". His performance covered some of the spectacular cases of Darrow's stormy career. Mr. Chappel was well received, just as he was when he portrayed Mark Twain, on his previous visi t.

Students helping the Community
UMR studen ts once again proved that they care about the Rolla area by helping out in a number of ways, one of whic h was the strong support given to the Red Cross, by the Miners, o n their bi-semester blooddrives. Ano ther way students helped out the community was the IFC-Cieanup that found many Greeks helping to clea n up Rolla . Also The ta Tau , with its Ugly Man con test , helped the community more than ever.

Alpha Phi Alpha takes First
The IFC Sing started off the Christmas Party Weekend with a big bang as the Greeks o f UMR showed off their many talents in this year s sing. Some of this yea r's highlights were Alpha Phi Alpha's " Keep You r Head to Sky" and Teke's " Basketball Jones", while ZTA performed " I am Women" and Kappa Delta sang a couple of fine numbers.

Rolla Singers spread Christmas Joy
Rolla students always trying to help the community, did a very good job by putting on a presentation, at one of the area churches, of Christmas music. All towns people, young and old seemed to enjoy the music as much as the Miners enjoyed putting it on.

St. Pat and his loyal Followers St. Pats brought all the Miners together as spring was comingjust around the corner. You knew everybody was rea lly in the St. Pats spirit when you'd go to class and there was so much green you thought you were in Dublin Ireland surrounded by Irishmen. The traditional killing of snakes and growing beards could be seen everywhere. Some people did grow beards and some people tried pretty hard.

Sha-na-na turns on packed house This years St. Pat Concert was not at all like the last , everyone who came left with a little nostalgia and a lot of good music in their heads. Sha-na-na put on a fantastic concert, and the crowd responded with tremendous participation, great ovations, and asked for so many encores that everybody could have been there until Sunday. But the packed house of 4,000 did get their moneys worth.

Football Miners Suffer Tough Season Again
The football Miners received another setback this year, compiHng an overall record of 3-6-2. Causes for a losing season were due to lack of experience of the young Miner team. However, there was some success. In the game against Mo. Southern of Sept. 29, the Miners were up, and won 16-0. An enthusiastic homecomin g crowd saw UMR beat Central Mo. State 24-14. In an exciting see-saw battle with Lincoln, the Miners emerged victorious, 26-25.
196
197
The Miners will have 16 of its 22 starters returning next season. T he team will have plenty of depth with a high percentage of the freshmen coming back. Offensive keys to the team will be Greg Haug, quarterback and receivers Mer l Dillow and Stu Dunlop. As a final note, three Miners were picked for all-conference honors. These were seniors Jim White and Steve Suellentrop, and sophomore Merl Dillow. In addition, many others were chosen for the second team and honorable mention.
199
Stallings and Noel Lead Miners to 2nd Place-MIAA
200
The UMR basketball team ended an exciting season by defeating conference champion Southwest Mo. State for the second time to finish the season with a 7-5 conference record and clinch a tie with Lincoln for second place in the MIAA. The Miners made a great try for the conference title. After a slow start and a 3-4 conference record, the Miners won four of the five remaining league games. The basketball team finished with an overall record of 12-12. The Miners played perhaps their toughest schedule ever with teams Like Memphis State, SIU-Carbondale, Southwest Texas State, and Eastern Illinois.
201
Coach Billy Key hopes to be able to find replacements for the members of the team that will graduate this year. Perhaps the most difficult to replace will be 6-3 guard Ken Stallings. Ken was named Most Valuable player in the MIAA. This was the first time a Miner had been chosen for this honor. He established many UMR scoring records while he was here including most points in a game, 41 against Lincoln. He also set a record for season point total of 596. Ken ended up with a 25.9 points per game average. That was sixth in the nation for college division players. In addition to being MVP, Ken was named to the first team ali-MIAA squad. He also made the district Vall America team.
202
203
Also lost is John Gibson, 6-4 reserve forward who averaged five points per game. Another player leaving the Miners will be Tommy Noel, 6-5 forward, who played in all 24 games and averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game. He is the fourth leading scorer for UMR as a four year starter. His high game was 32 points and 20 rebounds. Although the coaches have lost some key personnel, they still have some fine players returning next season. Guards Royce Vessel and Bob Kissack will both be back. To provide strength on the boards, two freshmen, Bob Stanley and Ross Klie will be returning. Merl Dillow will also be back to give some help in the rebounding department. The Miners hope to be back in the MIAA race with this nucleus of returning veterans.
204
205
Though having a disappointing sixth place finish in the MIAA, the harriers did compile a 5-2 dual meet record. The season was highlighted by a third place finish at the SI U Invitational and victories over rivals Washington U. and UMSL. Looking ahead to next year, the Miners won't lose any of their top seven. Back will be team leaders Mike Scheplin and Don Marlin, sophomore John Herman, and freshmen Bill Maples, Dave Craycraft, Paul Andrew, and Walnut Jensen.
Harriers Compile 5-2 Dual Record
206
Soccer Club Expands Program The UMR Soccer Club broadened its program to include more games and tougher competition this year. The players took a more serious attitude this year with rigorous practices and workouts. The overall record of the club was 3-8 as they beat Drury twice and Columbia College once. Next year the Soccer Club will include tougher teams in their schedule. These will include Floissant Valley, Meramec College, Harris Teachers College, Mizzou, and Springfield.

Inexperience Hurts Grapplers
2 10
The young UMR grapplers suffered a disappointing season with a dual meet record of 2- I 2-0. There were some bright spots, though. Steve Ganz, a senior, ended the season with an incredible 21-2-0 record. He set a UMR record of most wins with 2 1 and tied records of most falls, 6, and most consecutive wins, 8. Another senior, Mike Blackmore finished the season with a strong 11-1 0-0 record. Although the Miners did not do well in the MIAA or All-Missouri tournaments, they finished first in the UMR Tournament with five champions. With this experience under their belts the Miners look to a better season next year.
2 11
Link Play Shows Good Record
The golf team was undefeated in the Dual a nd Triangular competition, with the highlight being our vic tory over Arkansas Sta te University. Our Miners fini shed hlgh in collegia te to urnaments a t Galvestoh Island Classic a nd in the Heart o f America Classic in Central Mo . The Miners were lead by conference champion Steve Hill , who carried a 75 average throughout the competitio n. He will compete in the natio na ls a t Tampa.

Netmen Have Off Year
The UMR Tennis Team survived a dismal season as they faced many experienced and talented teams such as SIUEdwardsville and Washington University. The Netmen beat Lincoln twice, Central Bible College and Rockhurst during the long frustrating season. Increased student support for the Tennis Team could make a difference in the futu re as spectators were few and far between 路 this year.
't 2 13
Good Defense Not Backed By Hitting
The baseball Miners suffered a heartbreaking season this year, posting a 6-22 record over-all, and a I-ll record in the MIAA. Smith, who batted .385, was the only batter in the Miner lineup to bat over .300. McMillan was the highest averaging pitcher, posting a 3-2 record for himself. No other pitcher except McMillan had above a .200 pitching average.

Ruggers Take 2nd in STAG
Tournament
216
After a slow start in the fall of 1973, the Rugby Club put it together in the Spring to win some tough games. After defeating Rockhurst in the snow, the ruggers lost a heartbreaker to powerful Central Methodist 11-8. After that, they travelled to the Mardi Gras where the ruggers lost two tough games to eliminate them from the tournament. The ruggers came back to Missouri just to lose to Central Mo. State. The ruggers got psyched up as they demolished Southwest Mo. State and won handlly over the River Quay Rugby Club. In the Stag Midwest tournament, the Miners earned the right to meet Warrensburg in the finals after beating Northern Iowa, Springfield , and Mizzou. In a tough contest the ruggers were beaten 19-4, thereby taking second place in the tourney. The ruggers will try to rebuild their team next year due to the loss of many graduating seniors.

"Today, th e need for engineering graduates is so great that we shouldn 't have to concentrate on gradepoints as much as in the past. Take this opportunity to become in volved in our campus organizations. Wh ether it be a social, service, or academic honorary organization; with enrollment as low as it is, it will take a concentrated effort on your part to carry on the work of each organization and to strengthen its position when possible. Besides it really is "good times" to be involved." John Cummings

"College is a time for teaming and expanding one's talents. It is also the greatest single opportunity for enjoying oneself An efficient student will obtain optimum benefits from all phases of his college career." Daniel Osbourn
"A coed at UMR is in a unique situation from which she can benefit immensely--and I don't mean catching a husband! Any girl with serious career plans in the technical sciences or engineering fields must be able to communicate well with her colleagues, which are predominately men. She must feel at ease talking to a group of men, be able to work with them as if she were one of them, yet still remain a woman in their eyes. Through active participation in activities on campus, one learns to respect individuals for what they are, and cooperate and work as a team in order to produce some worthwhile results. This experience is extremely valuable in any job situation." Joan Brune
338
"Organization and discipline are the keys to success on this campus. First one must organize his studies, his activities and his time. Then he must organize his mind." Harvey G. Randall
"I'm proud to be able to say that I graduated from UMR because of its fine engineering heritage. This heritage seems to unite the students here in spirit and in goal. I only hope that this school will continue as a top engineering university and not be transformed into an advanced high school. If anything, an effort should be made to raise its reputation as an engineering center. " Kent Gastreich
339
"Rolla-A Unique Experience." Charles Flaminio
"To all the people who have said to me; I know why you're at Rolla- all those boys!; here's my answer: Success at UMR isn't measured by the number of dates one has; what makes for happiness here is the same for girls as well as guys-friends, hard work, and involvement." Sue Hadley
340
"UMR is a unique school. It holds opportunities for anyone willing to accept the responsibilities and challenges that go along with them. As a student athlete, UMR gave me the chance to participate and excel in sports, while receiving a quality educa tion and participating in extracurricular activities as well." J. Gary M cA /pin
"With the exception of a comparable social atmosphere, UMR has a lot to offer the person who is willing to devote the necessary time and energy. Organizations, academics, and athletics afford the student a chance to participate in nearly anything he/she want to do." Daniel Cartwright
341
"On this campus we live a surrealistic life in the sense that we are sheltered f rom numerous responsibilities and conflicts that we would undergo in the professional world. The Greek system is advantageous in the sense that it !NIT!A TES our endoctrinatio n in handling these sarne responsibilities and conflicts." Mark Smith
" You only get ou t of an education what you put into it. Engineering for the most part is the application of common sense and a few clever tricks on nature. Th e only trouble is one must be able to convince us that it is not black magic." Leonard Lasko wski
342
"Education, in the larger sense of the word, demands the broadening of one's outlook and scope of interests. Thus one's purpose at UMR is not only to learn how to apply scientific principles, but also to learn how to communicate with people. Extracurricular activities provide an excellent opportunity to accomplish the Iauer. After all, a student is a person who is learning to fulfill all of his powers and then using them in the service on mankind." Marvin E. Borgmeyer
"Many people picture the engineer as a computer grinding out problem solutions and having about as much personality as a computer. Campus activities afford the student as excellent opportunity to mix with people and to develop in ways not found in a textbook." Mark Weidinger
343
"My four years at UMR have been very rewarding. If I had to do it over, I would still come to UMR. But I do feel that UMR faces a very serious problem in maintaining a superior faculty. This university has forgotten that its primary purpose is educating individuals, and not research. The present policy of publish or perish has cost UMR several outstanding educators. If UMR is going to attract outstanding educators (people who can communicate their knowledge to others), it must begin to reward these people, both financially and authoritatively. Michael Hurst
"Worst of all (is) when you are the slave-driver of yourself . . Public opinion is a weak tyrant compared with our own private opinion. .. Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed and in such desperate enterprisis?" (Thoreau) Alan Kornacki
344
"Sometim es I think UMR places too much emphasis on conveying knowledg e and not enough on developing a student's judgemen t, integrity, and desire to be the best. I've found that these qualities are usually developed by participation in extracurricular activities and associated experiences in f riendship and leadership. Bob Brenneck e
"Too many students come to UMR seeking only an academic education, and that is all they get. They forget that an equally importan t college goal is the ability to communicate and work with people. This is gained rnain/y from extracurricular activities, provided the student takes an interest in the activity. If he joins just for a name to add to his resume, he has missed the majority at what he could have gained. " Paul Horstman n
345
路~n education should not consist of the memorization of formulas, algorithms, or definitions, but rather it should consist of learning where to find these tools and how to use them. Possibly the most important skill, without which all these tools are useless, is the ability to communicate effectively. You must be able to get your ideas across to others, and you must also be open to their ideas and suggestions. Communication is the one two-way street too many of us travel blindly in one direction, never knowing the other half of traffic even exists." Larry B. York
"As the young leaders of America, we college students have the future of the country in our hands. Let's accept the challenge and prove that we can shoulder the burdens placed upon us. Positive altitudes, hard work, intelligent thinking, initiative, and good judgement, these are the tools we have at our disposal. With their use and God's help we can begin to solve our country's problems, from the energy crisis to world peace. It's not an easy task, but we can do it, together." Michael J. Miller
346
"Classes and grades are an importan t factor at any university. But learning to communi cate, to work with others, to get along with people, that 's what its all about." Stephen Smith
"See the sunlight rise, Feel it touch the sky. I want to stay alive Until the day I die. I want to celebrate everyday. " "To celebrate life I feel you must give your lime and talents to become involved with people. Through the organizations 011 campus I have learned to accept each person as an individual and to be more tolerant of differing views. The experience of working together effectivel y has enabled me to communi cate betler with both men and women. It is this type of education which will be invaluable in my future." Linda Tevlin

"/ guess their are really two things I learned here at the Big University. Only join organizations where you can contribute and the organizalion in turn helps you. In olher words if you get involved in somelhing giPe a 100%. If you plan to do less get out. The second is that if you have $ 10 for graduation and I he R egistrar's office says ok, then you can graduate. No matter how much work you do, these are the only two requirements to graduate. I would also like to thank the many people here for their help and for pulling up with me. Any pllilosophical comments in this stalement are purely unintentional." K. Daniel Hinkle

Editor's Note The 1974 Rollamo is a student publication of the University of Missou ri at Rolla. In this edition the Rollamo Board has tried to capture the highligh ts of a year , that as stude nts, you created. Prominen t events of 1973-1974 were: the searching for a Chancellor, renovation of campus grounds, the shortlived fad of "S treaking", and the "scandles" involving Dr. James P. Wesley and Auxiliary Enterprises. I owe gratitude to a few special people without whose help the 1974 Rollamo would never have been possible. First of all, a special thanks to our advisor Dr. Lance Williams for his patience and cooperation. Thanks also to Pau l Coram from Pischel Yearbooks. Year after year Paul helps the Rollamo Board initiate new ideas in yearbook layout and design. I would also like to acknowledge the work of Ernest Gutie rrez, University Photographer, who for the past several years has produced the pictures our photographers were uanble to acquire.
Most of the pictures in this book were taken, developed, and printed by students. I owe a great deal to Nic Neumann who took over as Pho to Editor in the middle of the year and assembled the best photography staff the Rollamo has had in years. Thanks also to John Gallagher for his work with co lor that may soon appear in the Rollamo. I would like to thank the Rollamo Board for their sincere efforts in producing this book. In particular, I recogn ize Paula Marcellus as "Editor o f the Year" for he r outstanding job on the Queens section of this book. I thank J osepi Cappa and Dave Schepers for accepting the job of Sports Editors when the original editor was forced to step down . Also I would like to thank Dave Barczewski , Kathy Beck, Rich Dolan , Mark Dolecki, Pa tty Kackly, and Le nnie Lutz for doing a fine job on their respective sections. I would like to than k the Rollamo ed itorial staff fo r their help in distributing the 1973 Rollamo, typing, and assisting the editors. Being the editor of the 1974 Rollamo has been a very challenging and rewarding experience. It's one that I'll never forget. Craig Sarkes Korkoian Editor-in-Chief
