105th Best Ever ST. PAT'S Right: Zachary Brom participated in the best beard competition. Brom's explanation of the beard, "I had been growing that beard for 4-5 months. I'm in Kappa Alpha Order and some of my fraternity brothers helped me shave shamrocks into the back of my head that had rainbows coming out of them and leading into my beard that we sprayed gold. I decided to paint my mustache green and curl it (handlebar style). It took me about 2-3 hours of preparation."

I really enjoyed all the activities they had; from camel rides, to getting henna done."

Above Right: Evan Thibaud and Ian Christian working for Miner BBQ Club. From this event, BBQ Club raised enough funds to provide food for their meetings and get new cooking utensils. When asked about the Celebration of Nations, Thibaud remarked, "I wanted to ride the camels, but the line was long. Plus I was ten years older than everyone else."

Celebration of Nations

The Third Annual Celebration of Nations was a huge success. The parade rolled out from Havener at 11:00am on Saturday, September 29. More than eighty countries were represented by S&T students and area residents. The parade led to the bandshell in downtown Rolla that included a large variety of tents and booths of different countries that shared their cultures. There were lots of food, games, and activities. Evan Thibaud from the Miner BBQ Club commented, "I tried more new foods that day than I have in a long time." At 12:15, a five member steel drum band from Columbia, MO, the Banana Oil Pan Band, performed. Starting at 1:00 was the International Idol Competition. All ages and talents were encouraged to perform. After the International Idol Competition, a flash mob overtook the stage. They danced to the "Cha Cha Slide" by DJ Casper and they finished with "Gangnam Style" by Psy.

Above is a game of Carrom being played. Carrom, or Karrom, is very popular in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and surrounding areas.

Left: Caleb Marting, a member of Phi Kappa Theta was St. Pat in 2011. He attended Celebration of Nations in St. Pat's outfit.

HOMECOMING PEP RALLY Homecoming 2012 was celebrated with a Friday afternoon pep rally held by Phi Alpha Phi on the Painted Street. The pep rally included band performances, cheerleaders, contests on inflatables, and pies in the face.

Above: Stephon Moore competing against Rachael Lawal. Moore remembers winning this competition.

Stephon Moore covered in pie. This event was his most memorable from the pep rally, "...because it was a young lady from Kappa Delta that pied me and I didn't know who she was and still cant remember her name. I asked her what her name was right before I asked to pie her, then I turned around and paid for her to have the opportunity to pie me back. As you can see she got me good."

HOMECOMING

Saturday morning was the car show in the parking lot of GaleBullman Multipurpose Center. Many area residents, alumni, and car enthusiasts participated in this event. The football game was the place to be on Saturday afternoon. Missouri S&T played against William Jewell. S&T went into this game with a four game winning streak and beat William Jewell 52-17 to continue their winning streak. Also at the stadium was the Homecoming coronation. Multiple organizations nominated kings and queens with hopes that their king and queen would be chosen. The student body and faculty voted and the winners were announced at the game. Margaret Riley, a senior in civil engineering, was crowned Homecoming Queen. Nick Baum, a senior in chemical engineering, was crowned Homecoming King. Riley was nominated by Chi Omega. Baum was nominated by Zeta Tau Alpha.

Above: Margaret Riley and Nick Baum. Riley commented, "My most memorable moment was when they called my name because I knew I had my whole family, many of my friends, and my boyfriend, Zack, and his family there to celebrate with me." Baum was on crutches during the ceremony, "Let's just say that my Homecoming celebration paired with that huge St. Louis Cardinals win that put them in the NLCS the night before was a little excessive. I was fired up about Homecoming. I got tackled, which usually isn't an issue, unless its indoors, on tile."

Above: David Willey, a senior in civil engineering and Ashley Sacco, a senior in civil and architectural engineering, posing with Joe Miner. Willey and Sacco represented Pi Kappa Alpha. Sacco was elected as first runner-up.

DIWALI Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is a five-day Hindu festival

traditionally celebrated with activities in the homes of families. It involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil which signify the triumph of good over evil. At S&T there is a Diwali performance at Leach theatre. These are images from some of the performances.

GARBA-DANDIYA

By: Vibindeepak Vasudevan Garba is an Indian form of dance that originated in Gujarat, India. Traditionally it is performed during the nine-day Hindu festival Navaratri. Modern Garba is also heavily influenced by Raas, a dance traditionally performed by men. The merger of these two dances has formed the high-energy dance that is seen today. Dandiya Raas is the traditional folk dance form of Vrindavan, India, where it is performed depicting scenes of Holi. Along with Garba, it is the featured dance of Navratri. The women wear traditional dresses such as colorful embroidered choli, ghagra and bandahni dupattas, which is the traditional attire, dazzling with mirror work and heavy jewelry. The men wear special turbans and kedias, but can range from area to area. The dancers whirl and move their feet and arms in a choreographed manner to the tune of the music with a lot of drum beats. Both of these dances are associated with the time of harvest.

TURKISH REPUBLIC BALL By: Cagatay Atmaca

The Missouri S&T Turkish Student Association celebrated the 89th anniversary of their country's democratic constitution with their largest yet Turkish Republic Ball. Over two hundred students, faculty, and townspeople enjoyed authentic food, poetry, dancing, and even special performances of folk music by graduate students Cagatay Atmaca and Ozkan Ozturk. More music was provided by famous Turkish-American jazz singer Feyza Eren.

Pictured above, Dr. Fikret Ercal, the advisor for the Turkish Student Association sitting at a table in Benton Square. Pictured above: Katy Carnahn, Cagatay Atmaca, and Michele Frank. Atmaca is an S&T Graduate student who performed folk music during the event, however, My favorite part at the Turkish Ball was the dancing part because all the TSA officers and members deserved to have a lot of fun after all of the hard work and seeing the happy faces of our guests made me feel awesome at the end of the day.

Students from 13 different nationalities attended the ball. Pictured above are Neda Khalafi, and Poria Fajri who are from Iran.

HOLI - FESTIVAL OF COLOR

Above: Manish Kumar, Sahil Parikh, Vishal Soni

By: Sahilkumar Parikh Holi is an annual festival celebrated on the day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna (early March). It celebrates spring, commemorates various events in Hindu mythology, and is a time of disregarding social norms and indulging in general merrymaking. During Holi, people attend a public bonfire which, according to mythology, symbolizes the burning of evil and purification of the good. Friends and family also get together spraying each other with colored powders and water while enjoining the flavors of 'Bhang'. (Which is) traditionally a light intoxicating drink which sets one in the mood to usher in the festivities. Thus, (Holi) is a colorful and vibrant festival that glorifies the good and welcomes spring with merrymaking and celebrations.

Earth day Rolla's consistent observance of Earth Day on April 22 is surely a testament to the forward-thinking community here. This year began the first annual "Runway Rubbish" fashion show hosted by the Ecominers in which contestants turned their recyclables into gaudy garb to be voted on. Other Earth Day activities included arts and crafts, a band performance, and the usual environmentally conscious educational activities for local school kids.

SUB Coffee House Series: Savannah Outen Savannah invited a special guest/ friend from Missouri to perform.

Is that a yearbook editor in the crowd?

On a Tuesday evening in mid November, Savannah Outen visited the Havener Center atrium to perform a short and sweet set for the students at S&T. Savannah reached Internet star status from her many millions of Youtube views of what initially were successful covers, and later her original songs. In autumn of 2007, Savannah was signed to a label and released her first single from the demo CD, "Goodbye" and has had a presence in the industry since. Savannah and co. attracted a solid audience, and who doesnt love coming to Havener on weekdays to discover a good show and some free Slice of Pie?

... and she's back to it.

A quick pause between songs...

There's no better price than free for a good show and good pie.

International Day Of Peace The International Day of Peace, also known as Peace Day, was established to bring all communities together to share in promoting Peace. Celebrated on September 21st, International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations in 1981 and has been recognized annually throughout the world ever since. Missouri S&T is one of the many college communities that recognize the ceremonious day.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Of Service Missouri S&T students honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr by spending the day before spring classes began volunteering in the Rolla community. The day started off with breakfast and ended with a great keynote address from Ms. LaWanda Jones.

International Students Day The International Students Club of Missouri S&T held the best International Student Day yet on March 3. It was a day to experience different cultural food, music, dance, and fashion. There were more than 30 countries represented this year, and almost everyone had something to share with the crowd.

School House Swing The S&T Swing Dance Club hosted a night of dancing in early November at Mark Twain Elementary School. The atmosphere was nostalgic on several levels, being at an elementary school and having the premier17-piece Big Band from St. Louis, the Second Generation Band, who provided some swingin' live music.

No one could have guessed it, but this was the first time swing dancing for some.

...but some of those in attendance showed off some moves that were slicker than snot.

A letter from the

Editor in Chief Hello Reader, I'm glad you're reading this.

Eric Fallon

It has been my pleasure to guide this book from its conception to this point, and I am thrilled to see its completion. This sort of leadership position is entirely new to me and the responsibilities that came with this position have certainly reshaped me as a man and as a leader. I owe much of my personal development to this post I took last fall. Before I took the position of Editor in Chief, few things could have prepared me for the work I conducted this school year. I am most fortunate to have had unbidden guidance given to the staff and I by last year's Editor in Chief, Christopher Sample. His actions define dedication to his alma mater and to his roots, and for that, I thank him. Beyond Chris, I'd like to thank and commend Rebecca Birkner in Student Life for the job she's taken and the help she's given to us. Sheryl Mattox, our Managing Editor, and Kathy Withrow, my successor, have each put in two jobs worth of work and more and I admire their persistence and drive to complete their work. I would give a thousand thanks to each of them. Our staff this year had its tribulations and challenges and I'd like to thank them for all that they've done despite it. Lastly, thank you, dear reader and student. It's been a privilege and an honor to provide this publication to you and I hope your 2012-2013 school year at Missouri S&T was memorable in all of the best senses of the word. I hope this book will remind you of those memories that are yours for years to come. Cheers!
