WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The april edition of the cm17 connection magazine... Well haven’t we been lucky with the weather and we’re being told to expect a warm Easter too. Won’t that just be lovely if it holds true for the Bank Holiday! Last year we went to Dartmouth for half term... even managed to do some “crabbing” it was heaven - no smashing Winkles or the like these days (can’t believe I used to do that - eew!) - we were given a washing tablet bag filled with ham and bread to use. Genius and no mess! I digress or day dream... back to the job in hand. There are lots of events coming up in the next few months which is reflected by the increase in the number of our Community Pages - we have a whopping 3 pages of shows and events for you. Team that with the What’s On pages there really is lots and lots of things to keep us all busy and it’s all local - yey! This month I’m delighted to welcome new and returning advertisers: Church Langley Mobile Mechanic, First Class Care Agency, Graham School of Dance, Laser Hair Removal & Skin Clinic, NLA Private Homecare, Potter Street Baptist Church, Tennison Fitness, Valerie’s Veggies and last but certainly not least VSF Garage Repairs Ltd. Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Resident, Five years ago, I was honoured to be chosen by fellow residents to become the MP for Harlow and the surrounding villages of Hastingwood, Matching, Nazeing, Roydon and Sheering. Since being elected in 2010, I have made it my mission to put Harlow on the map. In Parliament, I have campaigned to cut fuel prices, curtail hospital car parking charges, championed jobs and apprenticeships and helped ensure that Harlow housing goes to Harlow people. In 2012, for my campaign on fuel duty, The Telegraph included me on their list of ‘Britons of the Year’ and The Sun newspaper called me a ‘crusader who has fought hard to make sure Brits have more money in their pockets’. For two years, I fought hard to bring the brand-new Sir Charles Kao University Technical College (UTC) to Harlow, which opened in September 2014. The school will transform education in Harlow and will help our young residents for generations. Whenever we have faced major problems in our town, whether it be illegal encampments, the possible closure of our respite centres or the loss of our Lollipop men and women, I have stood up against the authorities. Whether it be the Government or the Council, I’ve helped get these problems resolved. In fact, after we saved our Lollipop service I was named an “honorary Lollipop man” by Potter Street Lollipop Lady, Jane Chivrall! I love Harlow and am proud to represent our town and villages in Parliament. That is why I have championed our community and given it strong support - such as raising funds and working hard for charities like the Foodbank, Pact for Autism and many others. If you trust me to be your MP once again, I will continue to do my best to bring jobs back to Harlow, speak up for our community and support higher wages, whether it be through a strong minimum wage or lower taxes. The many Harlow residents who are backing me at this election are from every walk of life, including

Thank you Robert for all your hard work to get the matter of illegal encampments taken care of properly, unlike some other politicians out there who are just full of sound bites. Penny S, local resident

You have been the best MP Harlow has had for at least twenty years, and you have helped my family on several occasions. For that I thank you. Philip Bradbury, local resident

Brilliant news, congratulations and thanks again for all your hard work in getting the fuel duty increase scrapped! David Gradley, local resident

supporters of Labour, the Conservatives and UKIP. This is because whatever people’s own views, they know that I am an MP that loves Harlow, stands up for Harlow, and works hard for Harlow. I hope very much you will back me on the 7th May, and let me be your MP once more. Very best wishes, Robert Halfon

local business people in person Name and Business: John Furnace from Viking Solar Ltd. Where do you live? I live in Sawbridgeworth. What’s your favourite local shop? I really like the Fancy Dress Boutique in Old Harlow - it’s a great little shop for an outfit. What’s your favourite local venue? It’s got to be the Gibberd Garden - such a beautiful place with a real sense of humour and one of those swings that you dream about as a child. What do you like best about Harlow? The open green spaces, fantastic facilities and shops, and a superb cycle route network. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love finding new tracks on my mountain bike with my cycling buddies.

I set up my business because… My wife Annelise and I have always been fascinated by renewable energy and wanted to spread the benefits to others - halving fuel bills, going green, becoming energy independent and earning from the Feed-in Tariff, all rolled into one. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? That’s easy - Sunday lunch with all the family at Annelise’s mum’s - she’s the best cook in the world! Favourite one liner or saying? I like the one from Dory in Finding Nemo: “When life gets you down do you wanna know what you’ve gotta do? Just keep swimming!”

We Serve

Ordinary People, Amazing Things For over 34 years the Club has operated in Harlow and surrounding areas raising much needed charity funding and support for many local and national. Notable events during the time were; the Old Harlow Victorian Fair in the High Street (ran for almost 20 years), the “Cuddly Lions tombola stall which attended every church/ village fete and summer event, assisting local organisations with respite trips to the seaside and much more. For many years we also provided the Snowman trailer which used to go round the streets of Harlow at Christmas time. Over the years we have raised and distributed many thousands of pounds for charitable causes. Regretfully we have had to curtail our activities over recent times owing to the reduction in our membership. We have decided that we must make an effort to energise our membership and we invite adult applications for men and women to join us. We seek new ideas and input from people who wish to make a contribution to local and International needs serving the community at the same time enjoying social activities. In the first instance we invite you to contact us expressing interest and providing contact information. Following the receipt of this information we will be inviting you to a Social and information evening which will take place locally. The date time and location will be advised. A personal invitation containing full information will be sent out in due course. Many thanks for your interest. Lion Ray Curtis

celebrating 65 years east herts operatic society (EHOS) and hot mikado Theatre group EHOS is celebrating its 65th anniversary, with a performance of Hot Mikado at Victoria Hall in Old Harlow, from 23-25 April 2015. The society’s first ever production, in 1960, was The Mikado, the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Hot Mikado is based on. Founded in 1960 by Harold Abrahams, (the 1924 100m Olympic Champion, whose life was depicted in the Oscar-winning film ‘Chariots of Fire’), EHOS was originally formed to perform Gilbert and Sullivan works. Sixty five years later, the society is still going strong, selling out theatres around Broxbourne and Harlow with performances of the world’s best known musical theatre.

65 Years 1960-2015 Daniel Goode, who is directing the production, said “It’s very fitting that our first ever production back in 1960 was The Mikado, and this year, 65 years on, we’re performing the updated Hot Mikado at Victoria Hall. It’s great that the society Mr Abrahams created is still going strong, entertaining audiences in and around Herts and Essex.” “We guarantee the audience will be itching to get up and jive and jitterbug in the aisles, and everyone will have Three Little Maids stuck in their heads all week!”

Set in 1940s Japan with an added twist of Americana, Hot Mikado tells us of young lover Nanki-Poo, the estranged son of the Mikado, who visits the city of Titupu in the guise of a vagabond trumpet player. Yum-Yum, whom he has fallen for, is engaged to her ward Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner. As the wedding approaches, along with an order that an execution must take place in Titipu within 30 days, chaos, confusion and hilarity ensues. Featuring a mix of musical styles and influences, the show transforms classics such as “A Wand’ring Minstrel I” and “Three Little Maids” into show-stopping blues, swing and gospel numbers.

property column The home-selling process for first-time buyers It’s often assumed that when it comes to selling a property in Bishop’s Stortford everyone sort of knows what they’re doing and how to go about it. Most people sell things all the time on Ebay or Facebook, so the concept of selling something a bit bigger on a different portal must be relatively similar- right? Wrong! Selling your home whether you’re a first time seller or an experienced property guru can be a total nightmare because there are so many different factors at play. So for a first time seller it can be really daunting knowing where to start. Hopefully our handy checklist below will help you to get your affairs in order and get your home sold faster and for the best price!

1. Where are you going? When you’re thinking of moving you need to have a clear idea of what you’re looking for in a new property, where you want to move to and the cost of the next property. Sit down and work out what your new home will cost you and work out if you’re likely to need to get a mortgage for it. 2. Find yourself a good solicitor. If you haven’t got one already- or perhaps aren’t too fond of the one you have then ensure that you find yourself a great solicitor who is on your level and will do their best to help you with the sale of your property. You need to be open and honest with them so they can help you to full effect! 3. Give your home a once over. If you’re looking to sell, it’s a great idea to give your home a bit of attention before you list with an agent. Ask a friend or neighbour to go around the house with you and make notes on what needs to be done in each room- don’t forget the garden either. Your friend’s fresh eyes will help to see the things you might look past day-to-day. This will ensure that your home is de-cluttered and given some TLC before you think about photo-shoots and viewings!

4. Instruct an agent. Make sure you interview at least 3 agents and get 3 valuations done on your property. Not only will this help you to solidify in your mind what your property is worth but it also gives you the chance to meet and choose the agent whose practice you like the most and who you have a good rapport with. Getting your property valued will also help you to see how much money you could have to play with which will help you sort your moving finances. 5. Professional Photos. Make sure you instruct an estate agent who champions professional photography. In order to make your home look as appealing as possible you must ensure your photos are top quality. 6. Let your agent do their job. It is your agents’ job to advise you on how best to sell your property in your area and in the current climate. So listen to their advice and ensure that where possible you can cooperate with them. They know the property market like the back of their hand so allow them to spearhead selling the property for you. We also recommend that where possible you allow your agent to conduct viewings as often potential buyers don’t show their true thoughts and feeling on a property if they’re shown around by the current owners. Hopefully our hints and tips will stand you in good stead to sell your property faster and for more. Still confused? Don’t panic! If you’re thinking of selling your first home but have no idea where to start, just pick up the phone and give us a call on 01279 719193, we’d love to offer you some more helpful advice to help get your home sold.

POLICING OUR Harlow North PCSO Chrisie Goodman

I have received many complaints this month from residents of East Park, Chippingfield, Oxleys and Garden Terrace Road and residents of the Wayre that vehicles are continuing to park over the dropped kerbs especially at the back of Jenner House doctors surgery which has made it virtually impossible for many of the elderly residents of The Wayre and surrounding bungalows to get to the doctors or to the High Street. There are two car parks in Old Harlow and the first hour is free of charge you just have to get an hour ticket from the machine and display it on the dashboard. Parking is free after 6pm and on Saturday and Sundays all day so there is no excuse not to use the car parks. Harlow COMMON PCSO Rebecca Durrant

SCAMS Bogus callers are creative and their reasons for needing entry into your home can seem plausible, but be cautious. The person whose car has broken down and needs to use your phone to call the recovery service may not be who they seem. More complex scams involve people pretending to be from utility companies and needing access to your home. These people often work in pairs. While one person distracts the homeowner, the other gains entry to your home to steal. Typical scenarios include stories of an emergency gas or water leak. Over the telephone callers may pretend to be police officers or bank officials, who tell victims that thieves have had access to their bank accounts. They may try to reassure victims that they are genuine by telling them to hang up and dial 999. When they hang up the thief stays on the line, before ‘answering’ the 999 call. They then ask victims to withdraw large amounts of cash and send it to them in a taxi so that they can check the notes for fingerprints. Bank officials would never call you by telephone and ask for your full bank details or ask you to withdraw large sums of cash.

ADVICE Most people who call at your home will have a genuine reason for doing so but by taking a few simple precautions you can protect yourself and your home. Follow our advice to stay safe: • If you receive a phone call asking for your bank details or for large sums of cash call police from a different phone, for example a neighbours, or wait 5 minutes and be sure you hear a dial tone before dialing. • Don’t be frightened to ask for identification and always check it carefully. If you’re not sure, ask them to come back another day. • Think about installing a door chain and use it. Keep the door on the chain until you’ve seen identification. • If you need your glasses to read the identification, close the door before going to find them. Don’t leave the door open and unattended. • Remember to lock the back door before opening the front. • Don’t be pressured into letting someone into your home if you have suspicions. • Don’t keep large amounts of cash in the house. • Don’t believe scare stories. Not all callers are genuine.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING Shared By Christine Beetlestone

BUTTER BEANS AU GRATIN 2 cans of butter beans drained, only good quality as they are firm and meaty 500g Spinach Some broccoli broken into small florets Bunch of spring onions sliced with a lot of the green too 1 clove garlic finely chopped 1 oz butter 200ml cream and 3 egg yolks beaten together Salt and pepper 4 oz grated cheese – optional Breadcrumbs for topping

Great Vegeta ria n. Actua l ly yo u ca n use a ny bea ns yo u favo u r or even a m ixtu re of bea ns. It ca n a lso be prepa red the day before, covered a nd refrigerated.

1. Generously butter a gratin dish. Preheat the oven 200c/400f/gas 6. 2. Melt the butter in a pan large enough to accommodate the spinach. 3. Fry the spring onion and garlic until just softening, add the broccoli and spinach and toss and turn a few minutes until the spinach is just starting to wilt without making any water. 4. Take off the heat, tip in the drained beans and stir together with the cream, egg yolks and cheese, if using. 5. Transfer to the gratin dish and top with the breadcrumbs. 6. Bake for about 30 minutes until golden and gently bubbling. 7. Once you have made this you may like to ring the changes with the veg, such as courgettes, peas etc, even cooked potato (which then makes it a frittata!). 32

The Henry Moore Primary School Year 4 Tudor Themed Day On Monday 2nd February, the children in Year 4 at The Henry Moore Primary school took part in a Tudor themed day. Children took part in a Tudor themed treasure hunt, Tudor banquet and presented all of their learning in a dramatisation to the parents. The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the day and developed a secure understanding of what it would have been like to live back in those times. This is what some of the children had to say about the day:

My favourite part of Tudor Day was the treasure hunt because we went around the school in groups hunting for letters that made the word King Henry. We had to work as part of a team. James 4W

My favourite part of Tudor Day was when we did role-play and Mr Huggett was sent to the stocks for stealing bread. Some of the children got to throw wet sponges at him as part of his punishment.

We had been practicing very hard for our Tudor assembly so it was very exciting when we got to share it with our parents.
