WELCOME

CONNECTION

HELLO AND WELCOME The April edition of the cm17 connection April is the start of the warmer months and the beginning of the “outdoor” season - by that I mean you can venture out without dressing for the Antarctic! It’s a lovely time of year, almost like we’re coming put of hibernation, which is handy as there’s plenty to entice us out and about this month. The Gibberd Gardens are now open and if you’ve never been to their Easter Trail on Easter Sunday, it is a MUST! It’s become a family tradition in our house - just isn’t Easter without a visit! We are so fortunate in Harlow; Herts & Essex Community farm will be having their Easter egg hunt, Parndon Wood Nature Reserve will be holding theirs too as will a certain Church Langley Community group! Have a look on our community and what’s on pages to find even more activities to enjoy over Easter and half term, there’s something for everyone! We have some new and returning customers to introduce to you this month: Crace Decorators, B Newman Tree Surgery & Landscapes, Home Improvements with Bob, Lauren Brown Designs, Monks & Sons Upholstery, Poutfit Parties and Turning Tree Arts! Welcome one and all and thank you for choosing CM17!

ADVERTISING FEATURE

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Readers, I hope you are all looking forward to the Easter weekend! In my last letter, I discussed the launch of my first ever Short Story Competition for World Book Day 2019, open to primary school children aged 5-11 across Harlow and the villages. With over 200 entries from 18 different primary schools and a fantastic standard of writing, it made choosing a winner all the more difficult! I am delighted to announce the KS1 winner is Georgina, aged 7, of Tany’s Dell Primary School and author of The Selfish Prince, and for KS2, the winner is Ruby, aged 11, of Jerounds Primary School for her short story, The Burn. Both stories reflect the great importance of friendship and selflessness and were written beautifully. Along with the highly-commended entries, they can be read on my website and social media pages. These two lucky winners have been invited for a tour around the Houses of Parliament with their families, followed by a catch-up with me and each will receive a collection of personalised books, courtesy of Pearson. Once again, thank you to every parent, carer, grandparent and teacher that has encouraged children to get creative this World Book Day - I hope to run another competition next year! For more than 60 years, Harlow has had a townwide, printed newspaper. So, when The Harlow Star announced its closure, I wanted to ensure that everyone in our town could have access to community news. We are so fortunate to have CM17 Magazine. The family-run team do an outstanding job of bringing good news stories and community information to our front doors. But, not everyone in Harlow is lucky enough to live in the CM17 postcode and I’ve been working hard to ensure that no one is left disenfranchised from

local news, particularly those without internet access. In February, I wrote to the Culture Secretary, Jeremy Wright MP, setting out the importance of protecting our local press. In his response, he set out sustainable Government funding initiatives offering support to local publications, like CM17 and our new paper The Harlow Guardian, so that residents can stay connected with our community. Finally, an update on my sponsored swim. I had to postpone my swim in aid of the Princess Alexandra NHS Hospital Trust owing to illness, but now, I am ready to take on the challenge of swimming 110 lengths (2200m) in April! As an MP, patient and visitor of the hospital, I really see how the money raised will make a huge difference. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. Let’s raise even more! If you are able to give, please visit my JustGiving page, where I am keeping everyone posted with updates! To catch up on all my latest news, follow me on Twitter (@halfon4harlowMP), Instagram (@ halfon4harlowmp) and Facebook (Robert H Halfon). As ever, you can write to me via email and book in for an MP’s surgery (halfon4harlow@ roberthalfon.com). Have a wonderful Easter and best wishes, Robert

Gallery at Parndon Mill THE SENSE OF TOUCH Following a hint from a partially sighted member of the U3A at a meeting in Harlow last year, The Gallery at Parndon Mill has planned an exhibition we hope will be enjoyed by people with visual impairments. The Sense of Touch is for everyone who likes to touch, including children and those who just like to feel works of art as well as look at them.. Often in galleries the sign “Please do not touch” is to be seen. Artworks can be fragile and fingerprints hard to polish off. Not in this exhibition. All the exhibits are “touchy feely”. More than 25 exhibitors contribute works in wool, glass, marble, paper, card, embroidery, wood and metal. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, all the work is enjoyably tactile. Sculpture includes an edition of Gerda Rubenstein’s Julia, which features in the Harlow Sculpture Collection. Other sculptural works feature a bird, a frog, hands and faces which have some areas smoothly polished, others incised with drawing. There are a few large pieces as well as some which can be picked up and handled. One of the bigger ones is a textile mural the size of a sheet embellished with a tree with roots stretching out on the floor. A larger than life size puppet has stuffing made of various materials such as straw, sawdust and pebbles which have a different feel and make different noises when touched. Smaller pieces which can be picked up are felt vessels, rather like birds’ nests, lined with fibres and feathers,

embroidered shells edged with lace, and solid glass oversize potatoes! Wall pieces include cut out lettering, the positive and negative, a hanging made of raw sheep’s wool, fir cones and feathers, a felt piece worked until hard in places then embroidered, the lino matrix for a print and paintings which are three dimensional or light up. Altogether there is a great variety of shapes and textures to explore and enjoy. Music features too on Sunday 7th April at 4pm, when there will be a performance in the Project Space where visitors are invited on a journey through sound which provokes an emotional response. This will be an intriguing experience.

Charity of the year New employees for Saturday Tea Room By Michelle Toohill, CEO of ASL

ASL’s mission has always been to offer a pathway to paid employment and I am so proud that just after our 2nd Birthday we are able to do this. I interviewed some of the original members of ASL for paid employment on a Saturday in our Tea Room: Marc, Hayley, Kathy and Sasha. Two of the four have never had paid employment so this is not only a huge milestone for ASL but an even bigger one for the guys being offered the job. Their reactions were filmed and can be viewed on our Facebook page (ASL-AspireSupport-Learn) they were priceless! With your continued support we can eventually offer paid employment to more young adults with additional needs in the future. So a huge

Sasha, Marc, Hayley and Kathy thank you to everyone who comes along and supports us because together we really are making a difference. The first Saturday opening of our Tea Room was shared with some of our regulars plus “Double up your spirit” choir who sang to us all, which we all thoroughly enjoyed, thank you!

Aspire support Learn About the Tea Room: At present our Tea Room is open Monday, Tuesday, Friday and every other Saturday 12pm to 2.30pm. The young adults who attend ASL arrive at 9.30am and prepare all the food fresh with support for the day ahead. This includes freshly baked cakes and scones, a savoury dish such as quiche and a soup of the day. Their day finishes at 3.30pm after we have all tidied up and had our staff lunch together. We offer work based training in the kitchen and the dining room to young adults with physical and learning disabilities. Most of the young adults who work in our Tea Room have Down Syndrome however we cater to all young adults with a fast range of additional needs. We do prefer customers to book a table in our Tea Room because it is very important to keep a controlled and manageable environment for the young adults who attend ASL.

Any tips received in our Tea Room go towards organising fun and social activities for all of the young adults to enjoy, we have a team meeting and a vote is set to where everyone would like to go and how the money is spent. So far we have been for pub dinners, cinema, bowling, pizza hut and a boat trip. This is not only a wonderful way to allow everyone to see where their well earned tips have been spent but it also encourages great friendships and creates a huge social aspect for everyone who attends ASL.

art À peel art Group An appeal from Art À peel Words by Barbara Burge

Our watercolour painting group, Art a Peel, lost its founder Jim Peel, a well-known local character and artist, in the New Year. The group, which meets at St John’s Arc on Monday afternoons, 2pm to 4 pm, is now planning two exhibitions at the Arc, showing that we intend to carry on as usual. The first show is on from Monday 29th April to Monday 13th May, and all art works will be for sale at reasonable prices. The second will take place from late November to early December – handy for Christmas presents. Just come along to view the exhibition during office hours. We are also welcoming new members to our Monday sessions. Two of our members, very experienced painters, are taking on the tutoring role. At £4 per session, with tea and biscuits thrown in, this could be the beginning of a whole new interest in life for a very reasonable investment.

If you would like to join our class, buy any of our work, or find out more about the class, please contact the ARC on 01279 442447, or come along to one of our meetings and see for yourself who we are and what we do. The Art à Peel art group meets on Mondays at 2pm at the Arts and Recreation Centre, St John’s Walk, off Market Street, Old Harlow, CM17 0AJ.

gibberd gallery exhibition the gibberd Gallery’s open open exhibition explores town beyond the gallery walls The Gibberd Gallery has launched a call for submissions for an exhibition exploring the creative potential of Harlow’s public spaces. The Open Open is a twist on the gallery’s muchloved annual Open art exhibition. It is designed to celebrate the soft launch of a new and improved sculpture map.

Entrants to the Open Open exhibition should visit the Gibberd Gallery website for the full brief, FAQs, and conditions of entry.

Kate Harding, the Artistic Director of Harlow Art Trust says: “Where a sculpture is sited in the town has a huge impact on how we perceive it. Imagine if Moore’s Harlow Family Group was in your back garden, rather than the foyer of the Civic Centre. We want you to play around with how the place you put something changes what it means, and vice versa.” Entrants should make a temporary creative intervention somewhere in Harlow, take a photo, and send it via email to the gallery. The intervention could be a painting, a sculpture, an object or something that defies easy categorisation: the important thing is to think outside the box. The submitted photographs will be printed and curated to demonstrate the breadth of creativity that the town can inspire. A special guest panel of independent judges will award prizes to the four best submissions at the opening of the exhibition on Saturday 27th April. Prizes are generously sponsored by Astro Lighting, a lighting design company that has been based Harlow for over two decades. The Gibberd Gallery will run a programme of free tours that look afresh at Harlow’s sculptures and their sites for the duration of the exhibition.

Newhall Primary academy school & nursery Another busy term Children and staff have been enjoying our outdoor learning environment and have created a bug hotel on the school field. They talked about what they needed to put in the hotel in order to attract different insects. I think you will agree that our hotel is certainly a 5 star luxury hotel! Our school library is now open and the children have started to take out a library book each week to share with their parents at home. They have enjoyed looking at all of the different Fiction and NonFiction books available and have taken great delight in sitting on the mini-beast sensory rugs.

We have also had our first snowy days at Newhall. This caused great excitement and the children had lots of fun playing outside in the wet-weather gear. We also took advantage of our underfloor heating and laid out our hats, gloves and scarves to dry so that they were toasty warm for home time! On World Book Day we had lots of fun dressed up as Julia Donaldson characters and reading some of her stories. The children in Reception also wrote their own versions of some of her books. In the afternoon we were joined by Paul Stickland, the author of ‘Dinosaur Roar’ and ‘Ten Terrible Dinosaurs’. He read some of his stories to the children in Nursery and Reception and then ran a ‘Pop-up Book’ Workshop with Reception.

We have now appointed our first staff and parent Governors, and move from a Transition to a Full Governing Body next term. Mrs Debbie Gayler (Headteacher)

Harlow Chorus Singing at St John’s ArC Words by Mick Rumens

The Centre in Old Harlow has been the home of Harlow Chorus for almost fifty years and in recent years has also become the base for The Harlow Singers, who were originally formed and financed by the Chorus as a training arena for choristers not yet ready to join the Chorus. The Harlow Singers is a choir open to all, and meets at 7.30pm in St John’s Arc on Monday evenings in the smaller ‘vestry room’ for it’s 90 minute rehearsal. Members enjoy singing a wide range of pieces, learning the basic elements of reading music, keeping ones place in a score and singing techniques. There are no auditions to join the Singers as there is for potential members of the Harlow Chorus, so this friendly group could be the best way to improve your chances of entering the larger choir. The Singers now operate as an independent, self-supporting choir, but maintains close links with Harlow Chorus. Harlow Chorus is making very good progress in its rehearsals for our next concert, “Elijah” on Saturday 27th April at Chingford Parish Church. More new singers joined us in March and we all

enjoyed the wonderful tuition in the work by our fantastic choral director, Dr EdwardRhys Harry. Every rehearsal is great fun thanks to his sense of humour allied to his firm and clear instructions about our presentation. If you enjoy singing then you should come along and give us a try. We sing a wide range of works from Bach to Berstein, under the choral tuition of this brilliant choral director. You will be able to develop your musical skills and improve your vocal technique, performing with professional soloists and orchestras. You can also enjoy social events and make many new friends. For under 25s membership is free. Tickets are on sale at our usual sources, and you should be sure to enquire about audience coaches. For Audience Coach enquiries please contact: 01279 411815 for Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth, Old Harlow, and Epping. 01992 462528 for Hoddesdon, Broxbourne and Cheshunt.

5 minutes, 5 tips: Let’s Talk About Personal Security • Before you go out socially or for work, think about how you are going to get home. Avoid travelling alone and set aside some money in advance. Can you travel home with a friend? What time does the last bus or train leave? • For reassurance, carry a personal safety alarm. For more information about personal safety visit our website or www.suzylamplugh. org • Be extra careful when using cashpoints. Make sure nobody is hovering nearby and don’t count your money in the street • Pay attention to your surroundings. If you’re chatting on your mobile phone or listening to music on headphones you won’t hear someone approaching you. • Trust your instincts. If you think you are being followed, as confidently as you can, cross the road, turning to see who is behind you and head for a busy area where you can tell people what’s happening. If necessary, call 999.

Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes, turning once until the chicken is seared and cook through. Add the peppers to the pan after 2 minutes and cook till soft. 3. The Henry Moore Primary School Young Shakespeare Company comes to Henry Moore On 14th November, The Young Shakespeare Company came into Henry Moore Primary School to perform William Shakespeare’s Macbeth to Milwards and Henry Moore year 6 children. The performance was very intense, especially when the witches came out moving around very creepily. The play was interactive and the audience was used to create sound effects to match the scene that the characters were playing. There were five actors and they would play different roles through the majority of the play. The children thoroughly enjoyed the production and learned more about Shakespeare’s work.
