A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Readers, I hope that 2019 has got off to a good start for you. This month has been extremely busy with the vote in Parliament on the EU Withdrawal Deal, but this has not stopped me working hard for what matters in Harlow. Our libraries in Harlow are under threat. Essex County Council have launched a consultation into the future of library services and under the proposals, over one third of libraries in Essex are at risk of closure. Three of these are in Harlow - Mark Hall, Tye Green and Great Parndon. This month, I’ve stepped up my campaign to save our libraries. Together with some brilliant pupils from Cooks Spinney and St James’ Primary Schools, we handed in a petition to Essex County Council and spoke to the Councillor overseeing the plans about why we want to keep these libraries. I have been overwhelmed with correspondence from Harlow residents, sharing their passion to keep them open. Many families do not have access to computers, internet or printers and when lastminute homework is due, it is the convenience of being able to walk to a local library that I fear we will lose if they close. At times, libraries are simply a quiet space to escape chaotic home lives, study in peace or read at leisure. For the elderly and new parents, libraries offer a space to meet and socialise, preventing isolation and loneliness. The consultation closes on 20th February and I have had assurances that no decisions have been made. I would encourage you to take part in the online survey or send me an email at halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com to help save our libraries! I also had the pleasure of opening a brand new ward in Princess Alexandra Hospital, in January. The Charnley ward, named after a pioneer in
hip replacement operations, will provide 27 new beds for those recovering from surgery, helping to alleviate the strain on resources and improve patient flow. Incredibly, the ward took just a few months to be constructed, and can now be seen from the main entrance, pride of place. The staff at our NHS hospital put in every effort to provide the very best patient care - I see this not just as an MP, but as a patient and visitor. I’ve worked hard, most recently to secure £9.5 million for the hospital’s A&E department and I am continuing my campaign for a brand new health campus in Harlow, to provide a long-term solution to the growing demand, create more jobs and boost skills in our town. In the upcoming months, I am determined to continue working hard to cut the cost of living. 2018 marked some fantastic accomplishments, including the freeze of fuel duty for the ninth year running, and in April 2019, we will start to see the benefits of the increased National Living Wage and greater tax-free earnings, meaning more money into the pockets of hardworking Harlow families. As ever, you can write to me via email (halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com), attend one of my surgeries and keep up to date with all my news on Facebook (Robert H Halfon), Twitter (@halfon4harlowMP) and Instagram (@ halfon4harlowmp). Best wishes, Robert

Harlow Chorus Mendelssohn “Elijah” Words by Mick Rumens
Our third concert of the season, 2018/2019, will be the brilliant oratorio “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn. To be held at the Church of St Peter & St Paul, Chingford E4 7EN. Born on the 3rd February 1809, he was a great German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early ‘romantic period’. His was a prominent Jewish family in Hamburg, and, although he was brought up without religion, at the age of seven years he was baptised as a Reformed Christian. His family moved to Berlin in 1811 and at the age of six, where he was given tuition on the piano by his mother. He excelled in music, continued his studies along with his elder sister, and they were both instructed in composition very early in their careers. During his teen years some of his compositions were publicly performed, and he became a prolific composer of symphonies, choral music, piano music, concertos, and chamber music, amounting to at least 750 works. Mendelssohn visited England on at least ten occasions, and it was here that a number of his major works were first performed. He had a close friendship with Karl Klingesmann who worked with him on his oratorios and to whom in 1837 he first mentions his interest in composing an oratorio based upon the biblical story of “Elijah”. With all his other commitments it took him eight years before he had almost completed the work. In 1845, the Birmingham Festival
committee sent him an invitation to attend their next Festival and asked him if he could provide a new oratorio for them. In August 1846 it was finally to have it’s first performance, on a large scale, in Birmingham Town Hall. There was an orchestra of 125, 79 sopranos, 60 altos (all male), 60 tenors and 72 basses and there were four soloists. It received rapturous applause in spite of the fact that Mendelssohn expressed his disappointment with the performance to a friend later. For our performance we shall have the support of the British Sinfonietta and four soloists, Phillip Guy Bromley, Bass/Baritone, will perform the principal role of Elijah. Together with Tara McSwiney , soprano, Eirlys Myfanwy Davies, Mezzo soprano, and Ruairi Bowen, tenor. Our musical director, Dr Edward-Rhys Harry, will conduct the concert for which he will have rehearsed us to our best possible level of performance. This will be a powerful aweinspiring work to enjoy in this new venue in Chingford.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING OATMEAL & RAISIN COOKIES
225g self-raising flour 175g rolled oats 1 tsp baking powder 250g unsalted butter, softened 200g golden caster sugar ½ tsp vanilla extract 150g raisins
If you fancy a batch of home-made cookies at the weekend then try this quick recipe. They will keep for 3-4 days in an airtight container.
1. Preheat the oven to 180C / fan 160C / gas mark 4. Lightly grease two large baking sheets. Mix the flour, oats and baking powder together in a bowl. 2. Place the butter, caster sugar and vanilla extract in a separate large bowl and beat together until creamy. Stir in the flour mixture and the raisins and mix to a rough dough using your hands. 3. Divide and roll the mixture into about 24 balls and place well apart on the baking sheets. Flatten each ball with your fingertips to about 6mm thickness. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes until golden. Leave the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes until firm enough to transfer to a wire rack. Leave to cool completely.

The Henry Moore Primary School Henry VIII Comes to Henry Moore! Year 4 had an incredibly exciting day when Henry VIII came to visit us! As soon as we arrived at school, we were given new Tudor names and met with the king himself! We learnt all about Henry and his wives, his lifestyle and the vast differences between rich and poor Tudors. It was fascinating (and disgusting!) as we discovered hygiene was not a top priority for most Tudors. Later in the day, we learnt about Tudor food and drink, finding out that despite what most people think of Henry VIII, he was, in fact, very civilised in the way in which he dined. We had to impersonate how we thought Henry would eat and drink, with one of us winning a ruby ring from the king for such a good impression! Tudor crime and punishment was brought to life in the afternoon, as a few naughty children were put into the stocks for their terrible crimes! We finished the day with a jousting tournament, learning the rules and using real jousting lances. The tournament was close, but in the end, the girls were victorious! We had a brilliant day, full of laughter and fun.

community ANNOUNCEMENT
On behalf of Nicola Purse and myself (Lorraine Perry) thank you to everyone that came to the meeting held on 10th January to discuss the feasibility Denby Grange Residents https://www.facebook.com/groups/555346574937250/?hc_location=ufi of resurrecting the Church Langley Resident’s Association (CLRA). Please note, The group must be area/street specific as space is limited.
The majority who attended felt that a Church Langley wide Association would be impractical in terms of numbers, area and communication. It was agreed that individual groups or Associations could be the way forward and that those responsible for the Residents’ Facebook groups could engage with their communities using the model already set up Nicola. If this is successful, it is hoped that members of each group could then work together to support Church Langley as a whole, in terms of campaigns and events. We will look to meet again in 6-8 weeks; if timing is on our side I will publish the details in the relevant edition of CM17.
