WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe Jun/jul edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION Half way through the year. Half way!? I don’t know if this year is flying because I have a daughter that is coming to the end of her time at senior school - sitting GCSE’s, “Leaver’s Day”, Prom etc or whether as you get older life speeds up? Who knows! What I do know is that the majority of businesses that support this magazine through their advertising are based (approximately) within a 6 mile radius. They live locally, work locally and play locally and they really value your custom. Here’s an interesting fact for you: Did you know that if every adult in the UK spent just £5 per week in their local shops and businesses, instead of online, at the supermarket or with huge multinationals, it would be worth £16.8 BILLION going directly back into our towns? Which means real jobs, better facilities and nicer places to live. Makes you think doesn’t it? [www.totallylocally.org]

The gardens at easton lodge fun day for dogs

THE Gardens of Easton Lodge are holding a Fun Day for Dogs on June 23, thanks to the hard work of Annette Boreham, of Take the Lead, Essex dog training club, who is organising the events for dogs. The day will build on the huge success of the inaugural event in 2018. The fun day will include classes to judge the best puppy, best veteran, prettiest bitch; handsomest dog; waggiest tail; and the dog the judges would most want to take home with them! There will be an agility ring and stalls for gifts for dogs or their owners. The Gardens are always beautiful in June with colourful flower borders, lots to see in the walled kitchen garden and the peace and quiet of the Glade and emerging new Japanese area. Perfect for an early summer stroll – whether or not you have a dog!

The Gardens open from 11.30am to 5pm on June 23, with last entry at 4pm. Entrance fee is £4.50 for adults and children under 16 get in free, dog class entry £1, dog agility ring entry £1. The judging of classes will start at 12.30, the Rock Choir will sing at 1.15 pm; and the dog classes will continue from 2.30pm. There will be a fun children’s trail and craft activities. A full programme for the day can be found on the Garden’s website: http://www. eastonlodge.co.uk/whats-on/open-day/

HR tips by employAssist four hr top tips to future proof your business

Immigration and Right to Work Checks Though we are still waiting for finer details around the UK’s Brexit arrangements, we can be sure that there will be changes to EU workers’ rights to in the UK longer term. Smart businesses with EU staff will be keeping abreast of these developments and supporting their employees making arrangements for their settled status to remain and work in the UK. Recruitment Struggles There will be certain labour markets that are reliant on high levels of foreign workers that will be massively impacted by Brexit (e.g. health, care, and construction) and the reduction of EU workers. Smart employers in affected sectors will be preparing for skills shortages. They will be looking at increasing their staff retention and reducing their staff turnover, as well as reviewing how competitive their reward package is. Equality and Diversity With potential moves towards introducing Ethnicity Pay Gap Reporting, as well as plans to apply the Gender Pay Reporting requirements to companies with 50+ staff (currently only applicable to companies with over 250 staff); it will become increasing important for

businesses to ensure that their pay, reward and recruitment processes have a keen focus on equality and diversity practices. Smart businesses will be reviewing their workplace practices in mind of equality and diversity best practices. They will also be reviewing their pay gaps in regards to protected characteristics. Mental Health at Work Employers are responsible for not only the physical health and safety of their employees, but also their mental wellbeing. With the government considering making Mental Health First Aid training mandatory, there is increasing accountability on employers to be able to demonstrate what there are doing to support their employees overall wellbeing. Smart employers will be looking to implement support mechanisms such as Mental Health First Aid training, Wellbeing Services, etc.

A Day at the Fair is a set of light-hearted contemporary style folk songs about the stalls and games at an Edwardian Fair. locals that launch: be naturally healthy Caroline Spindlow is a Registered Nutritional Therapist and the owner of Be Naturally Healthy. In her own words Samantha tells us about her business......

Do you hold any qualifications? I studied at the prestigious, College of Naturopathic Medicine in London. Whilst there I completed one year in Biomedicine and two years in Naturopathic Nutrition which included over two hundred hours of clinic experience. I am a fully qualified Registered Nutritional Therapist. How would you describe your job? Put simply, my job is helping people to feel well again so they can get on and live the life they want! I take a whole-body approach with my clients, combining nutrition, lifestyle and medical testing to help them achieve their health goals. I use presenting symptoms as clues to discover any underlying concerns. It’s a bit like being a detective at times. This approach works for chronic conditions or if a client wants to optimise their health. Why did you decide to get into this profession? It became clear to me through my own health journey that we are making ourselves sick through how we eat, move and live. For many people, this is being compounded by taking more and more prescription pills, which is not always the solution - there is an alternative. I believe that what people really need is some guidance and to truly be listened too. Nutritional therapy provides this space and can be the health breakthrough that people need. What has been the most valuable lesson learnt so far? On a professional level, I have learnt that the person who knows the most about a health concern is the one that is suffering, they are most definitely the expert as they live and breath it, night and day, and

Tel:

that is very humbling. I have also learnt that you can’t help people if they don’t know about your business. What hurdles have you faced? I think the biggest hurdle is that of misperception - at the moment I think Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy is a misunderstood profession. It is not about making people feel bad about what they do and don’t eat, or some ‘out-there’ medicine, it is far from it. I also think people feel guilty about investing in self-care, especially when it comes to their health because we have the NHS for ‘free’. What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? I guess, like many business owners, it can be hard to switch off and not let the evenings and weekends become work-time, especially when there are so many clients that need help. When it comes to the human body the learning never stops so reminding myself to step away from the computer at night-time is a regular battle. I am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to social media, so getting my head around all the platforms has been a challenge, I’m getting there, albeit slowly! What has been the most rewarding aspect? What can be more rewarding than contributing to a persons health and wellbeing? It is an honour. How should potential customers contact you? They can find more about me on my website www.benaturallyhealthy.co.uk and/or visit me at my beautiful clinic room in The Coach House, Epping, or my home in Old Harlow I also have a virtual clinic via Zoom.

St Clare Hospice

super-gran georgie rasies £1400 for Hospice after daring racetrack challenge An 83-year-old grandmother of four from Bishop’s Stortford has raised approximately £1,400 for St Clare Hospice after jumping into the driver’s seat at a Suzuki Swift Sport Cup Rally Car Race. Goolmohr ‘Georgie’ Cantel is an avid St Clare supporter and ‘local legend,’ taking on an annual adrenaline-based challenge in aid of the charity for the past four years. Georgie’s latest hair-raising fundraising feat included taking to the racetrack at Langely Park Rally School in Saffron Walden on the morning of Saturday 30th March. Driving six laps, each three miles long, Georgie put ‘pedal to the metal’ in a Suzuki Swift Sport Cup rally car to raise vital funds for the Hospice. During her five years volunteering at the Hastingwood-based Hospice, Georgie has raised almost £15,500 for the charity through a series of sponsored adrenaline-fuelled challenges – as well as several charity Race Night and Afternoon Tea Party events.

cars! When we arrived, there were many Suzuki Swift cars lined up – and I made sure I chose a red one to match with my outfit! After some safety instructions, I was helmeted (not comfortable!) and taken by rally car champion Simon to my red car, ‘Number 5’. I was strapped in and given cushions to raise me so I could see over the dashboard, and then we were off! The track was full of twists and turns, and I completed eight laps in the end. At the end, I got a certificate and Simon said, ‘well done’. This super-gran seems to be qualified to rally car race! Excitement and exhilaration? Check!”

From a 490m zip wire flight (50m above the ground!) to scaling the O2 in London and whizzing down Stratford’s Orbit slide, Georgie’s fundraising fun has this year been topped by her latest charity challenge in aid of St Clare.

“It’s a lot of fun to fundraise for the Hospice in this way, but the real reason that I do it is because I know how valuable their care is to local people,” Georgie explains. “And with limited NHS funding, they need to raise around 60% of the entire cost of running the Hospice themselves.”

Commenting on the experience, Georgie says, “Saturday was fun and I enjoyed the experience! The sun shone, the birds sang, the wind blew gently and my son took me to the Racing School without too many instructions on how to handle the

Charity of the year New employees for Saturday Tea Room By Michelle Tohill, CEO of ASL

ASL’s mission has always been to offer a pathway to paid employment and I am so proud that just after our 2nd Birthday we are able to do this. I interviewed some of the original members of ASL for paid employment on a Saturday in our Tea Room: Marc, Hayley, Kathy and Sasha. Two of the four have never had paid employment so this is not only a huge milestone for ASL but an even bigger one for the guys being offered the job. Their reactions were filmed and can be viewed on our Facebook page (ASL-AspireSupport-Learn) they were priceless! With your continued support we can eventually offer paid employment to more young adults with additional needs in the future. So a huge

Sasha, Marc, Hayley and Kathy thank you to everyone who comes along and supports us because together we really are making a difference. The first Saturday opening of our Tea Room was shared with some of our regulars plus “Double up your spirit” choir who sang to us all, which we all thoroughly enjoyed, thank you!

Aspire support Learn About the Tea Room: At present our Tea Room is open Monday, Tuesday, Friday and every other Saturday 12pm to 2.30pm. The young adults who attend ASL arrive at 9.30am and prepare all the food fresh with support for the day ahead. This includes freshly baked cakes and scones, a savoury dish such as quiche and a soup of the day. Their day finishes at 3.30pm after we have all tidied up and had our staff lunch together. We offer work based training in the kitchen and the dining room to young adults with physical and learning disabilities. Most of the young adults who work in our Tea Room have Down Syndrome however we cater to all young adults with a fast range of additional needs. We do prefer customers to book a table in our Tea Room because it is very important to keep a controlled and manageable environment for the young adults who attend ASL.

Any tips received in our Tea Room go towards organising fun and social activities for all of the young adults to enjoy, we have a team meeting and a vote is set to where everyone would like to go and how the money is spent. So far we have been for pub dinners, cinema, bowling, pizza hut and a boat trip. This is not only a wonderful way to allow everyone to see where their well earned tips have been spent but it also encourages great friendships and creates a huge social aspect for everyone who attends ASL.

5 minutes, 5 tips Let’s Talk About Personal Security 1. Before you go out socially or for work, think about how you are going to get home. Avoid travelling alone and set aside some money in advance. Can you travel home with a friend? What time does the last bus or train leave? 2. For reassurance, carry a personal safety alarm. For more information about personal safety visit our website or www.suzylamplugh.org 3. Be extra careful when using cashpoints. Make sure nobody is hovering nearby and don’t

count your money in the street 4. Pay attention to your surroundings. If you’re chatting on your mobile phone or listening to music on headphones you won’t hear someone approaching you. 5. Trust your instincts. If you think you are being followed, as confidently as you can, cross the road, turning to see who is behind you and head for a busy area where you can tell people what’s happening. If necessary, call 999.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING

STRAWBERRY & CREAM ECLAIRS 50g butter, chilled and diced 65g plain flour, sifted 2 medium eggs, lightly beaten 300ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 150g small strawberries

Filled

with sweetened whipped cream and fresh strawberries, these dainty pastries make a great treat for afternoon tea or can be served as a delicious summer dessert. Swap the strawberries for fresh raspberries or blueberries, if liked.

1. Place the butter and 150ml cold water in a small pan and heat gently until the butter melts. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil then quickly remove from the heat and add all the flour. Beat thoroughly with a wooden spoon until the mixture comes away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball. Leave to cool for 3-4 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 220C, fan 200C, gas mark 7. Line a large baking sheet with baking paper. Beat the eggs into the mixture, a little at a time, until smooth and glossy. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Pipe 8 x 10cm lengths, spaced well apart, onto the baking sheet. 3. Bake for 12-15 mins until the eclairs are well risen and golden. Remove from the oven, pierce each eclair with the tip of a small knife and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes. This allows the steam to escape and dries out the centres of each eclair. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. 4. Whip the cream and icing sugar in a bowl until softly peaking. Spoon into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Hull and slice most of the strawberries (reserving four for decoration). 5. Halve each eclair and fill with the cream then top with sliced strawberries. Sandwich back together and dust with icing sugar. Decorate each one with a swirl of piped cream and a reserved strawberry. TIP: You can make and bake the choux pastry eclairs a day in advance. If the pastry

goes a little soft simply reheat in a hot oven for a few minutes until crisp.

East Herts Wood turners

Opportunity for young people to learn Woodturning The East Herts Woodturners have started a Junior Section on a different night to the main club night. The Junior Section is open to young people aged between 13 and 18. The Section will be limited in number to enable as much time as possible to work on the lathe. No woodturning experience is necessary. The aim is to teach young people basic woodturning to enable them, if they wish, to take part in further training with professional turners as part of the AWGB Youth Training Scheme. The Junior Section meets in Sawbridgeworth, 6 to 8pm on the fourth Tuesday of most months. If you or a young person, you know is interested in

learning this craft please contact John on 01279 657901 or email, details below. Setting up the Junior section is supported by the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (The AWGB which is the national association) and partially financially supported by the Stansted Airport Community Trust (SACT) and The Worshipful Company of Turners (The Company) which is a London Livery Company. For many years the East Herts Woodturners have been enabling young people to experience woodturning at Scout Jamborees and other events and enabled over 3500 young people to experience the craft.
