WELCOME
CONNECTION
HELLO AND WELCOME The march edition of the cm17 connection March. March! I can’t quite believe it either!! So much has been happening! Many of you know that the Harlow Star stopped publishing a printed version in February, which means CM17 is the last free independent publication in Harlow. I am very, very proud of this publication and I think you like it too. In our 14th year we now deliver to 8.9k homes in the CM17 area of Harlow and it will keep increasing as houses are completed in Newhall and Gilden Way. That’s not an estimated readership* by the way, that’s physical copies delivered through peoples doors, each and every month by my awesome team of local deliverers - many of whom have been part of the team since the beginning. I don’t say this to impress you but to impress upon you how dedicated and dependable we are. Put simply we care. I care. Community is everything. And we’ll keep doing what we do as long as we’re needed. So please do consider using the businesses and organisations in the magazine and tell them that you saw them in CM17! Thank you x

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Readers, Another busy month for Harlow! This has been an exciting few weeks in my campaign for a new hospital for Harlow. At the start of February, we welcomed the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, to the Princess Alexandra NHS Hospital, to see for himself why Harlow is in desperate need of a brand new, state-of-the-art health campus. Built in the 1950s, the estate is no longer fit for purpose and the fabric of the building is outdated. We simply do not have enough space for the 350,000 people that the hospital serves, and this is taking its toll on patient waiting times. Our discussions with the Executive Board and members of staff on the frontline helped make a strong case for Harlow. The Health Secretary stated publicly how impressed he was with what the staff are managing to achieve in the tight working spaces and acknowledged that a longerterm solution is now essential. As ever with these projects, it comes down to funding, which is why it was fantastic timing to have secured my fourth debate in the House of Commons, just two weeks after the Health Secretary’s visit. In my speech to the Health Minister, Stephen Hammond, I focused on the realities of the day-to-day operations for the doctors, nurses and support staff and how investment now, will save money in the future. Our proximity to London also means that the promise of higher wages, coupled with better training facilities, is impacting the hospital’s ability to recruit and retain high-quality staff. Under the health campus model, Harlow College, Essex University and Public Health England would work together to deliver unrivalled training and help make Harlow the health-science capital of the UK!
At the end of February, Essex County Council’s library consultation closed. As you may well be aware, they have proposed the closure of Mark Hall, Tye Green and Great Parndon libraries in Harlow (alongside 22 other local libraries in Essex). For those without access to internet, printers and computers, for those who want to escape chaotic home lives and find a quiet space to read and work, and for those who use libraries as social meeting space, I am working hard to keep our libraries open! Libraries are so important to our community. I have submitted a full response, alongside the letters and emails I have received from Harlow residents, and am now waiting to hear back. Keep up to date on the progress on Facebook (Robert H Halfon), Twitter (@halfon4harlowMP) and Instagram (@ halfon4harlowmp). This month, I also launched my first ever Short Story Competition for World Book Day 2019! I’m asking 5-11-year-olds in Harlow to send me their stories for their chance to win a special prize, in partnership with Pearson. If you know of a budding author, please get them to email me their story (up to 500 words) to halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com, together with their name, age and primary school by Monday 4th March. The two lucky winners (one from KS1 and KS2) will be announced on World Book Day on Thursday 7th March. Best of luck! Robert

Charity of the year Introducing: Aspire Support Learn (ASL) About us My name is Michelle Tohill and I am the CEO and Founder of ASL. I’d like to introduce ASL to you. ASL offers supported day care and employment opportunities to young adults with learning and physical disabilities in and around Harlow. I felt there was very little choice in our area for young adults with additional needs especially employment opportunities, so I started ASL in February 2017. We have achieved so much within that time and made a significant difference to lots of young peoples lives. We are based in David Livingstone Reformed Church, Maddox Road, Harlow, Essex, CM20 3RW. Our tea room is a tea room with a difference! ASL offers work based training in our tea room kitchen and dining room to young adults with physical and learning disabilities, offering a pathway in to paid employment. Currently the majority of our young adults have Downs Syndrome, however we cater to all young adults with a vast range of additional needs. All the young adults attending ASL run the tea room themselves with support from ASL staff and volunteers, this includes arriving bright and early to prepare all our delicious fresh food in our kitchen, serving all our lovely customers and tidying up at the end of the day.
dietary needs and have recently added some more vegan choices to our menu, which are already proving to be very popular with vegans and non-vegans alike – we highly recommend trying one (or two) of our vegan sausage rolls! Our themed afternoon teas are particularly popular and we have an ‘eggstra’ special Easter tea room coming up during the Easter school holidays, so be sure to hop along, everybody’s welcome! All the money we raise through selling our makes and bakes in the tea room, goes directly back in to ASL, helping us to continue to provide the much needed opportunities for our young adults. The tearoom is open Monday, Tuesday and Friday 12pm to 2.30pm and we’re really excited
We have lots of delicious options on our tea room menu, from sweet treats and savoury bites to hot meals! We cater for lots of different

Music at marigolds
SINGING THE BLUES AND ALL THAT JAZZ Eighteen years ago, a small group of jazz enthusiasts got together and talked about the lack of live jazz on their doorstep. Rather than complain, they decided to do something about it and thus Marigold’s Jazz Club was formed. Starting with the support of local musicians and Harlow Cricket Club (who offered a venue), the Club has developed into one of the top jazz venues in the Home Counties. Some of the top musicians in the country perform at the Club, many of whom have been winners of the British Jazz Awards.
For without grassroots venues it’s difficult to envisage a sustained and successful future for British music as so many individuals not only start but sustain their musical careers that way. Marigolds Jazz Club is held on the last Friday of every month and Marigolds Blues Club on the middle Friday of every month. Details of forthcoming events can be found on our website or look for us on Facebook.
As the Jazz Club became established volunteers realised that there was also an audience for blues music with very few venues offering a place where live music could be listened to. So Marigolds Blues Club was born and this January it celebrated its eleventh birthday. Once again the Club searches for and employs some of the best blues acts around, many of whom play all over the country and in Europe. With the loss of many small venues (London alone has lost around 40% of its venues), it is great to see that one small venue in Harlow is doing something to reverse this trend.

Gallery at Parndon Mill GOODNESS(!) Prints, paintings, silver jewellery and an “Alphabet of Goodness” by Liz Boast and Kirsten Wilson. Both artists share a love of the curious, of story telling, the recycling of materials and ideas, fun, history and playing with words. They plan to twist the word Goodness, celebrating it, flipping it upside down and turning it inside out! The exhibition will include prints, paintings, sculpture and an Alphabet of Goodness. Their previous exhibition here in 2016, “Silver Fish and Vermin” included an alphabet which looked at creatures normally rejected and seen with distain. Showing the humorous side Liz and Kirsten have decided to examine “Goodness” similarly in all its connotations from angelic and heroic to shocking and possibly stomach churning. Liz and Kirsten both have studios here at Parndon Mill and are two thirds of Parndon Mill Printmakers with Tania Durrant. As a group they exhibited at Cambridge Original Print Biennale in 2018.
Mill since 1999 where she produces narrative paintings at prints. Kirsten is a graduate of Central St Martins College of Art and Design in Fine Jewellery Design and Manufacture, and a Goldsmiths Bursary award winner. She has sold her designs through John Lewis, The Pier, and through the Spring and Autumn Gift Fairs in Birmingham. More recently she has had her illustrations published in children’s books and has sold her prints to International buyers through the Gallery here at Parndon Mill, local and national exhibitions, and through private commissions.
Liz has a degree in fine Art from the University of Hertfordshire and a masters in fine art printmaking from Cambridge School of Art. In 2010 she won the Gwen May award from the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and exhibited with them at Bankside Gallery and the London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy. essex shed network
launch of harlow men’s shed A Men’s Shed has been launched in Harlow, providing a safe space for men to talk openly whilst taking part in practical activities. Research has shown that Shed members, known as Shedders, have experienced a number of benefits including; increases in mental and physical health, a decline in feelings of loneliness and isolation, and a renewed sense of purpose. Supported by the Essex Shed Network, the Shed has received funding from the Age Well sub group of the Harlow Health and Wellbeing Partnership Board and the Centre for Voluntary Services Uttlesford (CVSU). Located within the Walled Garden of Harlow Town Park, Harlow Men’s Shed was officially opened on Friday 8th February by Vice Chair of Harlow Council, Clive Souter and CEO of CVSU, Clive Emmett. Starting life as a disused container, the shed was adapted with a door, windows and electrics and is now ready to be fitted with work benches, shelves and racks for tools. These essential components will be finished by the Shedders themselves; providing an opportunity for interested Harlow men to come together and share their skills and knowledge, to create an environment where they can socialise, find peer support and participate in group or individual projects. Portfolio Holder for Community and
Wellbeing, Councillor Eugenie Harvey, said: “We are really proud to have received a Men’s Shed as part of the Wellbeing Programme at Harlow Council. This is a growing movement and we’re very excited we get a shed here in the Town Park, which already does so much to improve people’s health and wellbeing. “The Shed is going to be an important community asset that will contribute towards the health and wellbeing of the men in Harlow.” The shed will initially be open a couple of days a week from 10am – 3pm for the final works to be completed, which all men in Harlow are invited to come along and get involved. If you or somebody you know is interested in being part of the Harlow Men’s Shed project, please email, Essex Shed Network: esn@ maldoncvs.org.uk or contact CVSU on 01371 878400. ESN and CVSU are also interested to hear from organisations and individuals who may wish to work in partnership with the shed in terms of commissioning work or donating tools and equipment.

Harlow Chorus A successful Open Rehearsal Words by Mick Rumens
I am very pleased to report that we had a number of new people, and returning members, join us for our Open Rehearsal on the evening of Monday 11th February. They were all provided with the necessary music to join in under the direction of Edward-Rhys Harry, our choir master and voice coach who made a very good impression with his good humoured tuition. It is very encouraging that our membership is beginning to rise again and this evening should add to our numbers. However, we would still welcome any new singers who may wish to join us, and enjoy some brilliant vocal challenges in our future concerts, beginning with the magnificent “Elijah” which we are presently rehearsing.
We are on target to complete our preparations for this upcoming concert at our new venue, St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Chingford on the 27th April sat 7.30pm, and tickets are on sale at our usual sources, and you should be sure to enquire about audience coaches. For Audience Coach enquiries please contact: gill.chester@talktalk.net for Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth, Old Harlow, and Epping. fosterf@sky.com for Hoddedon, Broxboune and Cheshunt.

We aim to work closely with members of the community to agree on policing priorities. Our officers are responsible for local crime investigation and reduction, community safety, detection of vulnerability and safeguarding.
5 minutes, 5 tips: Let’s talk about home boundaries • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave your house or go to bed. • With a PVCu or composite door with multipoint locking system: lift the handle, lock the door and remove the key.
Our officers have a good working knowledge of the area and extensive policing experience. We cover every day of the week in shifts between 8am and 2am. Harlow Community Policing Team would like to invite you to the following community engagement events: Coffee with Cops 07/03/2019 12pm-1pm at Staple Tye McDonalds. RECIPE OF THE MONTH: savoury
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING POTATO AND BROCCOLI GRATIN 750g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks Salt and freshly ground black pepper 225g broccoli florets 1 tbsp olive oil 1 red onion, peeled and thin wedges
cut into
25g butter
This hearty vegetable gratin makes a great side dish for a Sunday roast,
25g plain flour 300ml milk 150g mature Cheddar, grated
or a very satisfying vegetarian
2 tsp Dijon mustard
supper served with crusty bread
Fresh basil leaves, to garnish
and a mixed green salad.
1. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180F, gas mark 6. Boil the potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted water for 8-10 minutes until almost tender, adding the broccoli to the pan for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time. Drain well and place in a large shallow ovenproof dish. 2. Heat the oil in a large pan over a high heat and fry the onion for 3-4 minutes until just softened. Scatter the onion over the potatoes and broccoli. 3. Melt the butter in the pan, then stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute until foaming. Remove the pan from the heat and gradually stir in the milk. Return to the heat and bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Reduce the heat and simmer for 1-2 minutes, still stirring, until the sauce is smooth and thickened. 4. Stir in the half the cheese and the mustard and simmer for a further minute. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the sauce over the vegetables in the dish and scatter over the rest of the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with the basil leaves.
TIPS: Choose a firm, waxy-fleshed potato such as Charlotte or Desiree for this dish, or try sweet potatoes instead.

harlow talking newspaper For the blind, partially sighted, and visually impaired The Harlow Talking newspaper, produced for the blind and visually impaired local residents, reaches its fortieth anniversary in September, but we have had to suspend publication of our weekly news and information summary due to the closure of the Harlow Star, our printed local newspaper and news article source. Our monthly magazine, containing longer articles of general interest will continue to be produced and we hope to include more information items such as pavement works, chemist rotas and items from the CM17 magazine, which are invaluable to those unable to access readable material. With the imminent revision of the entire Essex library service, whose premises we use, and the closure of the printed local newspaper, we face two significant problems. The committee are working to find solutions for both of these. Using technology we are evaluating how we can obtain local news from other sources; we are looking at the changes required in the production process and the equipment and premises we will need in the future to enable us to restart weekly publication as soon as practical, and continue to provide this valuable service. Harlow Talking News is a registered charity, run by a team of dedicated volunteers and is funded entirely by supporters’ donations. Listeners who register are provided with a free

small boom box speaker, and receive their copy of the paper on a USB stick with audio files which can be played easily on this and other devices. We will keep our listeners and supporters in touch regularly with the progress towards our restart, if this proves at all possible, and we look forward to celebrating this anniversary year and many more to come. Mary Bunyard & Michael Hayter, Co-chairpersons Talking Newspapers Being able to see the printed word is something a lot of us take for granted. Blind and partially sighted people don’t have this opportunity – but we can help them in other ways. We can provide access in many different ways if we apply more thought and effort. We have the technology … let’s use it. In January 1970 the first Talking Newspaper was formed in Aberystwyth, and recordings sent out to listeners in Cardiganshire. In those early days no one envisaged that, more than 40 years later, there would be over 500 groups across the UK and more than 60,000 listeners.

The Henry Moore Primary School Reading Teams On Tuesday 13th November 2018, Years 3 and 4 came together to delight in the shared joy of reading. The children brought along their reading book, or a picture book, to share in small groups. All the children said they really liked buddying up with children from neighbouring classes and year groups. Reading really is the key!
