HELLO AND WELCOME to The May edition of the cm17 connection
CONNECTION
I hope you had a lovely Easter!
This month we have a couple more bank holidays to look forward too, not to mention half term. If your life isn’t governed by children, it means quieter roads and the possibility of hunkering down with projects that avoid the crowds. Whatever your situation there really is something for everyone to do locally, just have a look at the community pages and what’s on section to see what I mean. We have shows, fetes & fairs, music and much more. The majority of the businesses that support this magazine through their advertising are based (approximately) within a 6 mile radius of Harlow. They live locally, work locally and play locally and they really value your custom. Here’s an interesting fact for you: Did you know that if every adult in the UK spent just £5 per week in their local shops and businesses, instead of online, at the supermarket or with huge multinationals, it would be worth £16.8 BILLION going directly back into our towns? Which means real jobs, better facilities and nicer places to live. Makes you think doesn’t it? [www.totallylocally.org] Here’s this month’s new and returning customers: Apex Window Cleaning, Daisy Foot Care, Jon Vanner CBT, P and L Vacuums Ltd, Samantha’s Beauty Retreat, SugarPalm Thai Restaurant, That Amazing Place, and The Golden Dragon Takeaway. Welcome one and all and thank you for choosing CM17! Until next month,
Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Readers, I hope you are well and had a Happy Easter break. Firstly, I am delighted to share with you the good news that I have successfully completed my sponsored swim in aid of the Princess Alexandra NHS Hospital Trust! In April, I took on the challenge of swimming 110 lengths (or 2.2 km) to raise vital funds for our hospital’s charity. I’m so grateful to everyone that has generously supported me. At the time of writing, I’m very close to my £2,000 target and it would be fantastic to get this over the line. All money raised will go towards enhancing patient care, purchasing special equipment, improving facilities and investing in research. There’s still time to donate via my Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ halfon4harlow. Preparations are also getting underway for my eighth annual Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair in Harlow which will be taking place on Friday 13th September at the Leisurezone. Each year, I host and organise the Fair to give Harlow businesses the chance to showcase their opportunities and for Harlow residents to network with potential employers. In 2019, I want the Fair to be bigger and better than ever before. Already, we have some fantastic companies signed up to exhibit. If you, or someone you know, would like to have a stand at the Fair (it’s completely free!), then please just drop me an email to register: halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com. More details for job seekers and students will be sent out later in the year. You may remember that I campaigned for a new Junction 7A on the M11, bringing in £50 million of investment to our town. Once completed, the extra junction will help ease congestion for Harlow motorists. However, I am deeply concerned about the number of accidents occurring on the
Just before I took on my sponsored 2.2km swim with PAH’s Fundraising Coordinator (making sure I completed it!)
motorway, the ongoing works and the traffic buildup for those exiting and entering Harlow. As such, I recently wrote to the Transport Minister, Jesse Norman MP, and also asked for an update in the House of Commons’ Chamber on what the Government are doing to reduce collisions and what steps they are taking to aid Harlow motorists whilst construction is carried out. Following my letter, Highways England will be introducing a number of measures (including better signage and safety barriers) to help improve the safety between Junctions 6-8, rolled out in the Spring. The Minister also confirmed that preparations are being made to minimise disruption when works on Junction 7A commence next year. I will continue working hard to ensure that Harlow motorists can go about their journeys and commutes with as little disruption as possible and will keep you posted. For regular updates on what I am up to, you can Like/Follow my Facebook page (Robert H Halfon), where I am posting a ‘Weekly Round-Up’ video, as well as daily posts. You can also follow me on Twitter (@halfon4harlowMP) and Instagram (@ halfon4harlowmp). Best wishes, Robert

Restaurant opening
DISCOVER THE TASTE OF NEW THAI IN OLD HARLOW CM Connection magazine is so excited to tell you about the recent launch of Harlow’s very first Thai restaurant. Officially opened on the 18th of April, the Sugar Palm is a welcome addition to the cultural mix of eateries we have. Fully refurbished to give you a little bit of paradise in CM17, the Sugar Palm caters for everyone’s culinary tastes. Who better to bring you dish after dish of deliciously fragrant food than Head Chef ‘M’; who has many years of top end experience and is a highly-acclaimed Thai Chef? ‘M’ has trained and worked in Thailand creating some of the most beautiful meals for the Royal Family and heading up kitchens in some of the most luxurious and sumptuous hotels. For anyone who has ever experienced Thai food, you will know that it’s not just about the food and flavours, but it is also about the delicate and beautiful presentation of the food. The formal presentation of food is an incredibly important part of Thai culture; it is amongst the most exquisite with dishes and platters adorned with intricately carved vegetables and fruits – they are so stunning, you just don’t want to eat them! This is such a skill in itself, with these artistic chefs using a simple paring knife and iced water to create these mini-masterpieces. Did you know that this way of presenting food dates back to the days of the King of Siam in (1851-1868)? Restauranteur, Moin Uddin has been in the food
industry for over 20 years and already has a wealth of experience in managing successful restaurants in and around the Harlow area. He is very excited about bringing the Sugar Palm to Old Harlow and sharing with hungry customers their wide-ranging menu. All food is cooked freshly to order, using only the finest ingredients, organic roots, herbs and spices. The Sugar Palm ethos is very much ‘Eat Well, Live Longer’. Thai food is a particularly healthy way to eat, as so many of the ingredients are from organic root and plant sources which are naturally tasty with the added bonus of healing properties. A great example is the Galangal root which is related to Ginger and Turmeric but it’s a totally different species. It is widely used in cooking in Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic Medicine and helps to prevent heart disease, heals skin problems, slows the aging process, helps with tummy upsets, lowers cholesterol and blood sugar, helps with asthma and bronchitis and inflammation. The Sugar Palm restaurant can be found at 32 High Street CM17 0DW and you can reserve a table by calling 01279 412666. We hope that you all enjoy your little taste of paradise in Old Harlow and if you love your experience, please leave Moin and his team a great review. Bon Appetite!

locals that launch: Dedicated and hard working Samantha king has been a beauty therapist for over 11 years. In february 2019 she opened her salon Samantha’s Beauty Retreat at Mayfield Farm. In her own words Samantha tells us about her business...... When did you set up your business? I started Samantha’s Beauty Retreat in 2008 when I was 19, originally I worked as a mobile therapist. Two years later we built a log cabin in my grandparents garden, this was a real success and this helped me save up and open my salon in Matching Green on a farm. In December 2018 I was visiting Mayfield Farm Bakery to buy my bread, when I was told about a unit on the farm which would soon be available to let. I have always dreamt of having a pretty little salon at Mayfield Farm so I jumped at the chance... 6 weeks later on 16th February 2019 we opened the new ‘Samantha’s Beauty Retreat’. How did you decide on your company name? I’m normally quite creative but I clearly wasn’t when it came to choosing a company name! I thought it would be a good idea to have a company name which was simple and personal. What has been the most valuable lesson learnt so far? Don’t burn yourself out! Running your own business is hard work. I used to work 13 hour days, 7 days a week, socialise after work, stay up late on my phone booking clients in and I felt burnt out and unmotivated. I now try to do everything in moderation, as much as I love my work its very important to look after myself too. What made you decide to set up your own business? From a young age I knew I wanted to work within

the hair and beauty industry. I got a job at a salon as soon as I was allowed to work and although I loved working for people I found that my creative streak was limited. I’m quite creative and everyone who knows me knows I always have something I’m organising or designing. I realised that if I started my own business the opportunities would be endless. What hurdles have you faced? I have been quite lucky with my working career however I faced a recent hurdle when my 4 week old computer completely broke, deleting my salon booking system with appointments, work photographs and documents. After a few tears, and lots of phone calls I now have a brand new computer and am finally up to date with my appointments. My clients have been very patient and understanding, so I feel very lucky to have them.

Samantha’s beauty retreat What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? Finding time to do everything. What has been the most rewarding aspect? I have been extremely lucky to have such lovely clientele; I have met such amazing people who have taught me a lot over the years. I really enjoy listening to everyone’s life stories. It’s a great feeling when ladies leave your salon looking and feeling great with a new confidence. Are you the only employee? I am very lucky to have a great team of people alongside me. We have our lovely part time beauty therapist Sue, Maxine - ‘The spiritual worker’ carrying out Reiki & Crystal healing and Jodie - our amazing make-up artist. Our team will soon be expanding when we welcome our visiting Doctor carrying out all aesthetic treatments, a hair extension stylist and hopefully a few more staff members.
‘Can you get some sandpaper’ The look on my clients face was priceless... We all laughed for the rest of her treatment and the client ended up booking a course of microdermabrasion, a safe way to ‘sand’ your skin! How should potential customers contact you? We prefer people to contact us on 01279-902541 or 07521502754, some people contact us via social media however messages via social media can sometimes be missed. Anything else you’d like to add? I have been blessed with a very talented husband, family and friends who have supported me throughout. Without them and my wonderful clients I wouldn’t be where I am today so I would like to say a big thank you to them all. To anyone thinking of starting your own businesstake the chance, it will be worth it!
Do you work at any other job or occupation? My husband and I own ‘The King’s Head Horse Box Bar.’ We converted an old horse box into a mobile bar and we cover anything from weddings, parties to festivals and corporate events. It’s great fun! Do you hope to expand your business? I am hoping to take on another beauty therapist in the summer as we have been very busy since opening. I would like to offer as many treatments as we can so our treatment list will most definitely be expanding! Any funny stories from your working life that you’d like to share with us? When I had the beauty cabin in my grandparents garden, my sister Sarah worked with me at weekends. One particular day Sarah was doing some DIY in the salon while I was carrying out a treatment on a client, the client asked me what I would recommend to help her skin as she had a breakout of spots, at the same time my sister whispered from across the room ‘what do you want me to do next?’ I needed one of the salon walls sanding down, so at the precise moment my client asked her question, I answered Sarah whispering

david ward: a Smart adventure
smart 8000 1 Smart car 8000 miles When we see them darting around our busy streets few of us would ever imagine travelling long distances in them to Birmingham, Manchester or even Scotland! Not so David Ward who will be averaging daily distances, everyday for nearly a month, that most people wouldn’t dream of travelling… in a Smart car! He is setting off to cover 8000 miles driving to mainland Europe’s most northernmost point, far within the Arctic circle and then heading South, as far as you can go to ‘Gavdos’ the tiny Island off Crete, before heading back home. David is raising funds and awareness for the Samaritans who supply a phenomenal service to people up and down the country. David said, “That whilst we sit down in our homes or just go about our business people all around us are lonely and suffering problems, sometimes to us small problems but to them as big as Everest and with the Samaritans they can speak to compassionate friendly helpful voice which, let’s face it ,we all at some point could do with.” Founded in 1953, the Samaritans now have 200 branches which are manned solely by volunteers 24hours a day 365 days a year. They receive a staggering phone call every 6 seconds! Each caller has no time constraints, they can talk and be listened too for as long as it takes, which can be a massive help in relieving a little bit of the worry, self doubt, or anxiety that they hold. 1. Make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked before going to bed. Remember, If you have a PVCu or composite door, with a multipoint locking system, lift the handle, lock the door and remove the key then put it out of sight of the door, but readily available to escape in case of an emergency.
For more information about these events, please check out or webpage: essex.police.uk/your-area/ harlow or our facebook page: facebook.com/ EPHarlow New team members This month we have welcomed two new officers to the Community Policing Team, Pc’s Allen Kittles and Craig Upton. The additional officers have allowed us to revert back officers having specific beat areas to patrol and take ownership of. Each beat will consist of either two or three council wards and will have a minimum of two Police Officers and one Community Support Officer assigned to it. It is hoped that this will increase police visibility and help to address long term problems around crime and anti-social behaviour. Further funding will also see the reintroduction of a Town Policing Team in the summer which is welcomed news. The Officers responsible for the Old Harlow, Church Langley and Harlow Common wards

2. If you have an intruder alarm, turn on the ground floor zone when you go upstairs to bed. If you do not have an intruder alarm get a battery operated PIR (infrared) sensor alarm that can be placed indoors where your keys are kept, providing a limited alarm response. 3. To avoid possible confrontation don’t take the keys to the bed with you. For cars with keyless entry, put your keys and spare keys in a faraday bag to prevent the signal being accessed from outside. 4. If you have a garage or driveway, make sure you can use that for parking your vehicle. Make sure any garage is secured with ‘Sold Secure’ tested and approved security products. Find out more at soldsecure.com 5. Consider having a tracker fitted to your car and if you have one make sure it has been switched on.

The harlow architectural design Awards 2019
For the fourth year we’re asking Harlow residents to look around and nominate the most beautifully designed new buildings of the year. Harlow Architectural Design Awards, organised by Harlow Civic Society, aims to encourage architects, developers and property owners to make Harlow an even better and more beautiful place in which to live. The winners receive prestigious trophies at a presentation event in the Autumn. This year we have a new award Environmental - to add to our existing Residential and Non-Residential categories. The new environmental category is about the open, green nature of Harlow’s design, and highlights the importance of a sustainable and ecological response to climate change effects in towns and cities. We’re looking for nominations for projects where trees and shrubs have been planted, ponds and water have been restored and improved and/or green areas have been reinstated.
Non-Residential Winner 2018 - Gates Ford
Also of interest are building developments which have thoughtfully used environmentally friendly features and materials and older buildings that have been regenerated or reinstated rather than demolished. Nominations until the end of June.
Residential winner 2018 - Forebury Lane, Newhall

Harlow Chorus Finale at the St John’s ARC Words by Mick Rumens
Following our magnificent ‘Elijah’ concert at Chingford Parish Church in April, we finish this tremendous season under the baton of our new Musical Director, Dr Edward-Rhys Harry with a concert of choral works from Film and Television. This will be a programme of mostly modern, popular music which will be more familiar to a wider, younger audience with two performances at St John’s Arc in the Old Town. There will be an afternoon performance, particularly useful for families we hope, and an evening performance for anyone who finds the afternoon less suitable. There will be refreshments at both performances and a chance to meet and chat with choral members in the intervals. We will open with a Bond Medley featuring the Themes from Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, Live and let Die, and For Your Eyes Only. Then follows two Henry Mancini numbers, The Pink Panther from the film of the same name and Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This will be followed by choral selections from MyFair Lady by Loewe/Lerner and the Seal Lullaby from the Disney film. Other pieces include “Confutatis maledictis” from Mozarts Requiem which featured in
the film, Amadeus. Theme Academy from the TV series, Red Dwarf, Mr Bean and Blackadder by Howard Goodall. ‘Let it Go’ from ‘Frozen’ composed by Lopez/Lopez, followed by three John Williams works, ‘Exsultate justi’ from Empire of the Sun, and a selection from Schindler’s List. Then we will follow with ‘Dry your Tears’ and ‘Afrika’ from Amistad and finally Howard Goodall’s ‘The Lord is my Shephard’ from The Vicar of Dibley. More details of this concert, times and ticket and other information will be available in our June edition and we look forward to entertaining many more of our local supporters at this concert. Open Rehearsal We will be pleased to welcome any singers who would like to join us in an “Open Rehearsal’ on Monday 13th May at St John’s ARC from 7.30pm - 9.45pm. You really should come along and join us in rehearsing the above concert and enjoy the experience and thrill of singing in a big choir. Music will be provided - please arrive from 7.00pm. Anyone over 16 is welcome, but 16-18 year olds should be accompanied by an adult.

St Elizabeth’s centre
LOOKING AHEAD “St Elizabeth’s is a vibrant community supporting people with epilepsy and other profound disabilities towards an independent and fulfilled life. It is – and I can say this because I have only recently joined it – a truly amazing place, combining the best of new therapies and technologies with a century-old tradition of care and expertise. But we are not standing still. As a new CEO of a newly independent charity, I am eager to help us develop even further: expanding our reach and deepening our offer. The next few years for St Elizabeth’s will be very exciting. We hope you can join us on our journey!” – Adam Sampson, new CEO of St Elizabeth’s After a successful 2018, St Elizabeth’s are moving into 2019 with fresh and exciting new challenges, a new Chief Executive, a new website and as a new, independent charity! 2018 saw us host a number of popular events, such as the annual Summer Fayre, Apple Day, Charity Golf Day and Christmas Bazaar. Apple Day was hosted by the famous face of BBC DIY SOS, Billy Byrne! The celebrity opened our orchard to the waiting crowd, and met with lots of families, friends and residents of St Elizabeth’s. Billy returned for the Christmas Bazaar, opening the ever popular Santa’s Grotto with a little help from Sparkle the reindeer.
Are you looking to take on a challenge event this year? Could you do it for St Elizabeth’s? There are lots of ways to get involved, including the London Marathon (2020 ballots open to run for us!), Ride London or even abseiling! We still have some 46 mile places left for Ride London, taking place in August 2019. We also open our Corporate and Community groups volunteering programme in April, where corporates are invited to take part in volunteering opportunities involving maintenance, general tidying and painting. All of these tasks help keep St Elizabeth’s looking beautiful and enable all residents to enjoy during the warm summer months.
Did you know? • St Elizabeth’s is one of the largest employers in Hertfordshire, employing over 650 staff! • St Elizabeth’s supported 240 people in 2018!
Successful fundraising and support from far and wide meant our School will now benefit from a fantastic new playground! The playground has been in a state of disrepair and as a result, lots of the children have missed out on recreational and therapeutic activities. However, a new surface (fundraised for by kind supporters!) will enable the children to get back to taking part in the activities they so enjoy.

St Clare Hospice
st clare open gardens event returns for its 25th year This summer, our perennially popular Open Gardens event is back for its 25th year, and local security company, Land Sheriffs, is generously sponsoring it. This year the horticultural event will take place throughout the summer season giving greenfingered fans of the event many opportunities to explore the beautiful gardens that will be opening for the Hospice. From mid-May until the middle of September, lovers of flora and fauna will be able to explore some of the best-kept green spaces in our catchment area – from the villages of Thornwood and Hastingwood, to the gardens of Harlow, Loughton and Epping. More than 25 venues will be opening their gates to the public in aid of St Clare Hospice during their 25th annual Open Gardens event, including Willingale Road Allotments, hosted by Loughton
Borough Council. Open Gardens event organisers are hoping to raise more than £5,000 for the Hospice across the summer season. Entry to participating gardens is payable on the gate and is from £3 per garden, or £5 per group of gardens. Tea, cakes and lunches are available in many of the gardens. A free guidebook, which includes details of each of the participating gardens or groups of gardens, and the cost of entry, can be picked up in any of the nine St Clare Hospice charity shops, or at the Hospice Reception. For more information call Dani on 01279 773738 or email dani@stclarehospice.org.uk For a full list of the participating gardens and their opening dates, visit: www.stclarehospice. org.uk/events

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING FRESH CHERRY AND ALMOND CAKE 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 225g golden caster sugar 225g self-raising flour 4 medium eggs, beaten 300g fresh cherries, pitted and halved 100g ground almonds

minutes, plus cooling
1. Preheat the oven to 170C, fan 150C, gas mark 3. Grease a 20cm round deep cake tin with the extra butter and line the base and sides with baking paper. 2. Place the butter and caster sugar in a large mixing bowl and using a hand-held electric mixer beat together until very pale and creamy. Gradually pour in the eggs, beating well after each addition. If the mixture starts to separate slightly, stir in a spoonful of the flour. 3. Sift over the rest of the flour and fold in gently with a metal spoon. Toss the cherries into half of the ground almonds, and fold into the mixture with the rest of the ground almonds. Spoon into the prepared cake tin and gently level the surface. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, until the cake is risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. 5. Whilst the cake is still cooling make the icing: sift the icing sugar into a bowl and stir in 2-3 tbsp warm water and mix to make a thin icing. Spoon the icing over the warm cake, allowing some to drizzle down the side. Decorate with extra cherries and serve warm or cold. TIP: The fresh cherries will mostly sink during baking but this is perfectly normal,
giving a moist fruity layer at the base of the cake. It’s best eaten within 2 days of baking.

The Henry Moore Primary School Dinosaur Work Shop On Monday 14th January, Laura from Life Long Ago, visited Year 3! Our day started by turning into archaeologists, where we unearthed fossils and ‘curiosities’ from the sand. We had 3 different sections to visit, carnivores, herbivores and all other creatures. In the afternoon Milwards school joined us. We were visited by the Dinosaur Work Shop, where we all enjoyed meeting ‘Jack’, the 7 week old T-Rex and ‘Millie’, a 7 year old T-Rex! We learnt so much about dinosaurs and had a terrific day!

WE LCO ME TO O U R NEW LOOK!
Our double glazing company specialises in the supply and installation of high performance UPVC windows, doors, porches and conservatories throughout Essex, Cambridge and Hertfordshire.
After over 30 years of business within the Essex and Hertfordshire areas, we thought it was time we gave our family run business a bit of a make-over!
In addition to our quality range of uPVC products, we also provide a leading range of Fascias, Soffits and Guttering.
Like homes, we could all do with a freshen up, so we are launching our new look and branding... we still offer great value and craftsmanship, but now in a more distictive way!
At AA Windows, we use our very own professional installers which means unlike many other companies, we are able to closely monitor the performance and ensure a consistent quality finish to our installations. We invite and welcome all of our customers to visit our Showroom in Harlow, Essex to examine our products in greater detail. Our staff will be happy to show you round and demonstrate our latest range of products. Visit us at www.aawindows.co.uk to find out how we can give your home its own make-over!
