THE

CM17

WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The april edition of the cm17 connection magazine... I don’t know about you but I’ve come over all “spring cleany!” Perhaps it’s my sixth sense letting me know that spring has finally sprung... or more obviously that blossom is, well, “blossoming”. Either way, and here comes a shameless plug, the first place that I turned to for help was the CM Connection. Now, there is a lot that needs to be done. Not just on my house but also on me! Yep! It’s time to get myself prepped and preened for the summer too! It will be a great opportunity for me to catch up with advertisers old and new and also means I will be able to personally recommend even more of our lovely local businesses - win/ win! And if that wasn’t enough, there are lots of fun things happening locally throughout the month too. I might see you at one of the many theatre productions, charity events, fetes or shows. You’ll notice me - I’ll be the one all glowy and smiley, you know, the “prepped & preened” one.

Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Resident, Five years ago, I was honoured to be chosen by fellow residents to become the MP for Harlow and the surrounding villages of Hastingwood, Matching, Nazeing, Roydon and Sheering. Since being elected in 2010, I have made it my mission to put Harlow on the map. In Parliament, I have campaigned to cut fuel prices, curtail hospital car parking charges, championed jobs and apprenticeships and helped ensure that Harlow housing goes to Harlow people. In 2012, for my campaign on fuel duty, The Telegraph included me on their list of ‘Britons of the Year’ and The Sun newspaper called me a ‘crusader who has fought hard to make sure Brits have more money in their pockets’. For two years, I fought hard to bring the brand-new Sir Charles Kao University Technical College (UTC) to Harlow, which opened in September 2014. The school will transform education in Harlow and will help our young residents for generations. Whenever we have faced major problems in our town, whether it be illegal encampments, the possible closure of our respite centres or the loss of our Lollipop men and women, I have stood up against the authorities. Whether it be the Government or the Council, I’ve helped get these problems resolved. In fact, after we saved our Lollipop service I was named an “honorary Lollipop man” by Potter Street Lollipop Lady, Jane Chivrall! I love Harlow and am proud to represent our town and villages in Parliament. That is why I have championed our community and given it strong support - such as raising funds and working hard for charities like the Foodbank, Pact for Autism and many others. If you trust me to be your MP once again, I will continue to do my best to bring jobs back to Harlow, speak up for our community and support higher wages, whether it be through a strong minimum wage or lower taxes. The many Harlow residents who are backing me at this election are from every walk of life, including

Thank you Robert for all your hard work to get the matter of illegal encampments taken care of properly, unlike some other politicians out there who are just full of sound bites. Penny S, local resident

You have been the best MP Harlow has had for at least twenty years, and you have helped my family on several occasions. For that I thank you. Philip Bradbury, local resident

Brilliant news, congratulations and thanks again for all your hard work in getting the fuel duty increase scrapped! David Gradley, local resident

supporters of Labour, the Conservatives and UKIP. This is because whatever people’s own views, they know that I am an MP that loves Harlow, stands up for Harlow, and works hard for Harlow. I hope very much you will back me on the 7th May, and let me be your MP once more. Very best wishes, Robert Halfon

local business people in person Name and Business: Richard Vine from Grabco, local grab hire service and stockist of topsoil & aggregate products for delivery or collection. Where do you live? I currently live with my wife and five children in Takeley. What’s your favourite local shop? I always try and shop locally so it is very hard to pick a favourite, but my wife would choose Shwe Tan Beauty Salon in Old Harlow, for sure! What’s your favourite local venue? I like taking my children to Harlow Town Park to see the animals and play football. What do you like best about Harlow? There are lots of indoor and outdoor activities for us to do as a family like Harlow Leisure Zone and the Cinema.

What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love spending time with my big family! I set up my business because… My parents have always run a successful furniture business and I always hoped that one day I could set up a business of my own, so I just took a “leap of faith! What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? At the moment I’m excited about the new Top Soil Screener we have bought for our Hunsdon recycling yard – it means we can now recycle up to 80% of the muck we take away. Free Cakes for kids Creative Cake contributions! Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. The cakes are baked by volunteers from our community with your kid’s favourite theme or style. Free, friendly and confidential.

Thank you to Sara for baking.

Thank you to Linda for baking.

Since the last edition we have produced three birthday cakes, all of them going to children in domestic violence refuges in Harlow. The blue first birthday cake was baked a new baker to our team, Sara Evans, who is also a trustee of local charity Kisses 4 Kids. Sara says: “I wanted to get involved in Free Cakes for Kids Harlow as baking is something me and the husband enjoy doing together. It is fun and allows us to explore our creative sides.” Using some of the money we raised from the last year’s bake sale and quiz night we were able to put on a very special Easter party for some of the families in the refuge. We hired the soft play centre, Wild ‘n’ Wacky, and to help the families get to the venue we hired a mini bus from Alley Cat Vehicle Hire. Many local

Tel

individuals donated Easter Eggs for the children, a large number of which were donated by Church Langley Registered Childminder group. The party was very much appreciated by the children, a number of which had quite recently arrived in refuge so it was great for them to have some fun in the school holidays. In the coming weeks we have been asked to bake a cake for Maybury Open Door’s 10th anniversary, which we are delighted to be doing. Maybury Open Door (www.mrct.org.uk/mayburyopen-door/)is open to all and supports a wide range of adults including elderly, people with a disability, homeless, isolated people and others who just need to venture out and meet new friends. So not our usual children’s cake, but still a very valid cause and anniversary worth noting.

Guide Dogs

the joys of boarding a guide dog by Hemmie Martin

Three years ago, we began the journey of becoming volunteer Guide Dog boarders, after our eldest daughter, Jessica, sought out volunteer opportunities regarding animals. Jessica was applying for Veterinary School at Nottingham University, and needed some extra animal experience above having a house rabbit and guinea pigs. We began the journey by being interviewed by Guide Dogs to be sure we were suitable candidates. We then undertook training on how to walk a Guide Dog, how to cross roads, squeeze passed parked cars, how to toilet and feed them correctly, and how to manage their behavior in our home and out and about. We had to learn how to give a dog a regular free run, which meant letting the dog off the lead and letting it run around wildly, letting off steam and enjoying being just a dog without the constraints of being a working dog for a while. We had to trust the dog would come back to us, which is nerve-racking the first few times. Can you imagine losing a Guide Dog which takes about £30,000 to train! Although we took the training on board, I was nervous about boarding a fifteen-month-old dog for three months, but I knew I had Jessica to lead the way. Our first dog arrived, Gus, and he was an energetic, excitable black Labrador. He would jump up at us in greeting, jump on the sofa, and bound upstairs. We had to get him out of all these unwanted habits, which took time and patience and with the support of our instructor we got there - it really is a joint effort! Gus quickly became a much-loved part of the family, and soon I could not imagine the home without him. But that was soon to change. Towards the end of the three months, Guide Dogs begin matching the dog to a blind or partially sighted person. To make this match, Guide Dogs assesses the temperament of the dog, the dogs preferred walking speed and the environment that it is most suited to working in. The dog is then tried out with the potential

14

match, until the instructor and the service user are satisfied with the choice. Only then does it feel real, and we know we’re going to lose the dog. It is so much harder than I ever anticipated; hugging the dog for the last time is heartbreaking. However, we try to keep in mind that the dog is going to give a blind person the freedom and independence we all take for granted. We have to keep our eye on the “greater good” of the process. Jessica has been at university for almost two years, and we have continued boarding Guide Dogs without her support, something I never thought we would do. Volunteering has become part of our lives, and as has Guide Dogs. You are fully supported by the charity and you get to see what your home looks and feels like with a dog as a family member. It’s a beautiful experience, and we’ve started a photograph album with all the dogs that have touched our lives before improving someone else’s immensely. Guide Dogs are currently looking for new dog boarders in Church Langley. If you are at home for most of the day, have a fully enclosed and private garden and would be prepared to board for us then please do get in touch using the contact details below to apply. Each dog stays with the boarder for around 12 weeks; the instructor collects the dog for each training walk and returns the dog afterwards. Boarders need to attend an initial training session before they get started and receive on-going training thereafter according to the specific needs of that particular dog.

Harlow Civic Society Lecture: Gibberd reassessed

IT IS nearly 70 years since architect Frederick Gibberd was appointed Master Planner for the new town of Harlow, a brave venture in large-scale postwar urban planning. Gibberd (1908-84) was one of the major figures of his generation with a large and varied architectural practice. During his early career, he was regarded as a pioneering architect of the Modern Movement. However, as his professional career progressed, Gibberd continued to develop an aesthetic approach to architecture and town design which led some to question his commitment to architectural modernism. Now architect Christine Hui Lan Manley is coming to Harlow Museum on Thursday, May 14, to talk about her research into Gibberd’s achievements and influence. She will reassess Gibberd’s work to show that he was at the forefront of the development of a distinctly English form of modern architecture and planning. Christine’s lecture will include illustrations of the amazing scope, scale and variety of Gibberd’s commissions.

of the Month feature. She knows Harlow well, having written and lectured on urban planning using areas of Harlow as study examples. Currently, she is completing a book about Sir Frederick Gibberd and his work as a major modernist architect and planner, and has used the extensive Gibberd library and archive in Old Harlow as a major source of information. The event is the second of three in Harlow Civic Society’s 2015 Lecture Series. Admission to the lecture is £2 for members of Harlow Civic Society, and £4 for visitors. The venue is Harlow Museum, Muskham Road. Time: 7.30pm. For more information, contact Mag Barrett: 01279 429134 or email: barrett. mag@gmail.com.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

property column The truth about gazumping As a word, gazumping sounds like a pretty fun activity like zorbing or some other crazy new sport. The truth however is much less pleasant. Imagine for a second you’ve been trawling through property portals on line, spoken to every estate agent in Bishop’s Stortford and have registered on all their buyers lists. You’ve visited nearly every property within 10 miles of Bishop’s Stortford that is within your budget (and sometimes outside it just for fun); you’ve seen properties that are just right but too dear and properties on budget that leave something to be desired. Finally, you find the property of your dreams and it’s within budget! Success! You put in an offer with the estate agent which is accepted subject to contract. BUT just before it all goes through another bidder appears and puts in a higher offer on your dream home and boom…your dream house is snatched from you so the seller could get more cash for their property. Gutting! This is the truth about gazumping. The real question is what on earth can you do to avoid it? Gazumping happens most often when there is high competition between buyers for properties in a certain category or price-band. You may hear this being referred to as a ‘seller’s market’ because in this situation sellers (and estate agents) have all the power to accept or turn away multiple offers on their popular property. A recent survey claims that between 1-2% of property transactions fail due to gazumping and is particular prevalent in the Bishop’s Stortford area. Gazumping puts us as estate agents in a really sticky situation. Legally speaking, we have to pass on in writing every offer that is made to a seller whether they have accepted another offer and removed their property from the market or not. We also can’t stop a seller from accepting a higher offer because unlike the Scottish property market, offers aren’t legally binding. Don’t panic though! There are a few ways that you can reduce the likelihood of being gazumped, we can’t guarantee that our tricks will stop it happening altogether but by following our steps you’ll give yourself the best chance of getting your dream home.

1. Sell your property first If you’ve sold your home already and are living in rented accommodation, you will be in a much better position to exchange contracts FAST and avoid someone coming in at the last minute and outbidding you. A vendor is far less likely to accept another offer if they know you’re in a very strong position. 2. Build rapport with the vendor This might seem an odd suggestion, but if you’ve put in an offer on a property that you’re desperate to buy, building a positive relationship with the vendors could be the difference between them accepting a slightly higher offer or sticking with you. Ask your estate agent to arrange a second viewing to meet the vendors once you’ve put the offer in. 3. Be prepared This one is obvious - make sure that you have already spoken to an independent financial advisor to discuss all the possible mortgage options (if you need one), a property surveyor picked out and a solicitor who knows you want to move quickly. Get as much packing and moving preparation done as you can. 4. Act quickly This one links with the previous point. Once you have made your offer, ensure that you speak to your financial advisor to get your mortgage underway. Call your surveyor as soon as the offer has been accepted and get them in to the new property to survey ASAP and finally, ensure that you contact your solicitor and you are hot on their case to get things moving quickly. Being proactive when it comes to moving home is a sure fire way to fend off pesky gazumpers and get you the property you love! Selling your property first is an easy way to put yourself in the best possible position and avoid disappointment.

Bishop’s Stortford & District Footpaths Association By Daphne Wallace-Jarvis for BSDFA

Hi there! OK, Quiz time... Question: What does the BSDFA stand for? Answer: Bishop’s Stortford and District Footpaths Association. The BSDFA! The words to remember are - ‘AND DISTRICT’.... This local organisation embodies a wide local area across Herts & Essex. BSDFA has its roots dating back to 1957 - it is a multi-aged group who enjoy walking the very many and generous number of footpaths, bridle-ways, and bi-ways in our area and who wish to ensure they are well maintained and available FREE FOR ALL for the foreseeable future. Our area encompasses north Harlow, Stortford, Hatfield Heath, Stansted, Birchanger, Much Hadham, Little Hadham and all the super villages around and en-route to Saffron Walden. We walk twice a month, on a Sunday, in the morning, gathering for set-off at 10am sharp, so there is plenty of time after a 5-6mile walk to enjoy the rest of the day participating in other activities and being with the family. This is not an all-enveloping commitment, simply come when you can and join in.

banana and water if you wish, and we can normally accommodate a dog on a lead. As a bonus, sometimes there is a pub at our start/end point. We have some stunning local countryside, animals, plants and birds in the Herts/Essex borders which we will see, walk and talk through. Yes, all this, and your weekly exercise too. Remember we need to leave at 10am so allow sufficient time to park & change into boots and whatever! Come and see a buzzard in flight! Harlow common PCSO Rebecca Durrant

Use Of Force It’s a rare but frightening prospect to be confronted by an intruder in your home. Your first reaction may be to defend yourself but it’s important to know where your actions stand in law. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) have issued a joint public statement entitled Householders and the Use of Force Against Intruders. What is reasonable force? Anyone can use reasonable force to protect themselves or others, or to carry out an arrest or to prevent crime. You are not expected to make fine judgments’ over the level of force you use in the heat of the moment. So long as you only do what you honestly and instinctively believe is necessary in the heat of the moment that would be the strongest evidence of you acting lawfully and in self-defense. This is still the case if you use something to hand as a weapon. As a general rule,

24

the more extreme the circumstances and the fear felt, the more force you can lawfully use in selfdefense. Do I have to wait to be attacked? No, not if you are in your own home and in fear for yourself or others. In those circumstances the law does not require you to wait to be attacked before using defensive force yourself. What if I chase them as they run off? This situation is different as you are no longer acting in self-defense and so the same degree of force may not be reasonable. However, you are still allowed to use reasonable force to recover your property and make a citizen’s arrest. You should consider your own safety and, for example, whether the police have been called. A rugby tackle or a single blow would probably be reasonable. Acting out of malice and revenge with the intent of inflicting punishment through injury or death would not.

LOCAL COMMUNITY Will you believe the intruder rather than me? The police weigh all the facts when investigating an incident. This includes the fact that the intruder caused the situation to arise in the first place. We hope that everyone understands that the police

have a duty to investigate incidents involving a death or injury. Things are not always as they seem. On occasions people pretend a burglary has taken place to cover up other crimes such as a fight between drug dealers.

Church Langley PCSO Phyllis Chipchase

I am starting this column with a request of help from Church Langley residents to track down a group of around 4 youths on scrambler type bikes. There have been over 8 separate incidents called in to Essex Police regarding nuisance motorbikes/ scramblers being driven at high speed on the bridle paths, by the Water Tower and on the playing field between Church Langley and Newhall.

bike but the person too.

I have also received numerous emails regarding this same issue and have managed to track down one of these bikes. A home visit and warning has been issued. Due to the seriousness of this I spent an evening last week patrolling these areas, when all of a sudden a dark green or black scrambler bike came hurtling across the park at very high speed. The rider was wearing a grey hoodie a dark green or black full visor helmet with the number 151 clearly visible on the petrol tank.

• Walk around your property think how you would get in if you lost your keys? Perhaps through that open window, made even easier by the ladder propped up against the garden shed?

At this time the field was full of very young children at football practice, this driver showed complete disregard for their safety. I called out to him to stop, which he did, I then shouted out to stay put, at this point he revved up and sped off at high speed towards Tesco. Do you know who he is? Please be unaware that a bike can be seized if it is seen to be driven in an anti-social or dangerous manner. In the first instance they will receive a warning the second occasion the bike will be seized and crushed, the warning is not only on the

Host families wanted

Herts & Essex English School Host families, please help! Spanish students from the sunny Canary Islands could miss out on a trip of a lifetime. Students from the Canary Islands could miss out on an educational trip to Harlow this summer, because there are not enough families available to host them. The students are 12 to 15 year olds and will be staying in Harlow for 4 weeks during June and July. They are on a language trip, wishing to improve their spoken and written English.

to Harlow for over 20 years and have built lasting friendships across the miles. The visiting students have a full and varied programme featuring English lessons, day trips and activities, so will be out most of the day. The trip is due to take place from 26 June to 24 July. Please get in touch if you are able to help.

Elizabeth Williams, who runs the Herts and Essex English School, which organises the stay, said: “We have some wonderful host families in the area, but we desperately need more to enable as many students as possible to make the trip. This is a great opportunity if your child is learning Spanish at school, to have a native speaker in the house. It is also a great way to make new friends, whilst earning some extra money for the summer”. Small groups of 30 students have been coming

Harlow Chorus ‘A Summer Serenade’ Thaxted Church Saturday 18th July Words by Mick Rumens

Our musical direct, Alex Chaplin, who has been absent for our first concert this year, will make a most welcome return for this event and we shall have the highly acclaimed Charivari Agreable, a baroque ensemble, under their Artistic Director Kah-Ming Ng, providing our musical accompaniment.

season, which will commence in September. The main item in this concert will be Bach’s Magnificat in D, and is his musical setting of the text from the Gospel According to Luke, scored for five vocal parts (two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass), and a Baroque orchestra. In 1723, after taking up the post as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Bach set the text in a twelvemovement composition in the key of E Flat major. In the Gospel of Luke, the words, of the Magnificant, are spoken by Mary when she visits her cousin Elizabeth, both being pregnant. The feast commemorating that visit is called Visitation. The D major version, a brighter key, was first performed in 2nd July 1733, as part of the feast day service in the St Thomas Church in Liepzig.

We shall be performing works by Bach, Charpentier and Purcell in this celebration of summer, prior to our 40th Anniversary

More of this programme next month, however we look forward to your support at this concert.

This concert, the last in our current season, was originally due to be performed at St. Peter ad Vicula church in Coggeshall. However, due to a wedding being booked for the same day, and the village carnival being staged the same afternoon, the venue had to be changed. Thankfully, the Thaxted Music Festival having finished the previous week, the church was able to offer their excellent venue for our concert.

Tickets: Advance bookings: £15 full, £13 concessions, £7 under 16’s. (all reserved)

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

PINEAPPLE CHUTNEY to accompany gammon or ham steaks 3 X ½” slices pineapple, peeled, cored and cubed (or tinned) Grated rind of ½ lemon 4-5 grams grated ginger 2 teasp lemon or lime juice 1 cinnamon stick (after use wash and dry to use again) Sugar to taste Fresh red chilli chop a small piece in tiny squares 1 teasp Cornflour or arrowroot mixed to a runny paste with water 15 mins preparation, 5 minutes cooking.

15 m ins prepa ration, 5 m inutes cooking. Taste before yo u a dd the chopped ch il l i a ccord ing to how hot yo u l ike it. It wo u ld a lso go dow n wel l at a ny BBQ, even w ith cu rries.

1. Cook all ingredients other than the cornflour/arrowroot, in a non-stick pot over a medium heat until it comes to the boil. 2. Stirring all the time, slowly pour in enough paste to thicken, you probably won’t want all of it and simmer for 4-5 minutes. 3. Cool and remove the cinnamon stick. 4. Grill the ham steaks or alternatively, pour over some pineapple or apple juice, place a slice of pineapple on top of each steak and cook in the oven for about 15 mins - until juice is beginning to bubble (the ham or gammon doesn’t need a lot of cooking). 5. Serve with the chutney on the side. TIP: Buy pineapple when it’s on offer, chop off the peel, slice, core and freeze it. It freezes perfectly, as does the chilli, red, green or orange. Slice it in half lengthwise (with rubber gloves on as it burns if you touch your skin) take out all the seeds and carefully chop it into small squares, freeze it in a small container and it’s ready whenever you need it. Peppers are the same.

The Henry Moore Primary School Sketching Week Linked to PSHE

Teachers and pupils of The Henry Moore School sharpened their pencils for a whole week dedicated to drawing! All year groups got involved and began by developing their observational skills. Most teachers linked their drawing to their PSHE (Personal, Social, and Health Education) topic. For example, Year 3, who were learning about ‘Helping in the Community’, took part in a school litter pick and then sketched rubbish, such as rotten fruit. In Year 5, their topic was ‘Keeping Healthy’. They looked at Leonardi Da Vinci’s work on the human form, which culminated with the children sketching hearts.

Each year group completed the week with a display of finished artwork. The end result was phenomenal!

Some year groups took part in a ‘Big Draw’, whereby every child was given the opportunity to select a medium of their choice and draw on any scale, whilst listening to music.
