WELCOME HEllO AND WElCOME TO This very special edition of the cm17 connection magazine... I’m guessing the front cover may have given it away. In June 2005 I walked around Church Langley for the first time hand delivering what was then called ”The Church Langley Monthly”. I was terrified; convinced that people would come running out of their houses demanding to know what I was doing posting this “leaflet” through their door! After that first morning I came home to 16 messages left on my newly purchased answerphone - all of them positive; either wanting to advertise or congratulating me on my endeavour. It was the best feeling... and it hasn’t stopped. To say that I love what I do would be an understatement - my family & friends can testify that I live & breathe all things CM17 (and now CM21 & CM23 too!).

Thank you for not running out of your home 10 years ago to confront me about my “leaflet”. Thank you for not only supporting me but also the many, many businesses that have chosen to advertise in The CM17 over the years. They, like me, believe in community and all things local. I like to think that we have all benefited from that over the years, I hope that you agree.

One thing that I’m really proud of is that I have 10 original customers from my first year that are still advertising today - I couldn’t have planned a more perfect coincidence! Intrigued as to who they could be? See if you can guess and then turn to the centre pages to find out if you’re right. They’re a great read!

Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

I would like to begin by thanking all the many residents who supported me in the recent election, including the many who normally support other political parties. I love Harlow, I champion Harlow, I fight hard for Harlow and I work hard for Harlow. My number one priority will always be Harlow and the villages. Over the coming months and years, I want to carry on bringing jobs and apprenticeships back to Harlow, keeping fuel bills down, protecting our NHS and championing Harlow housing for Harlow people as well as higher wages for lower earners. The good news is that businesses are opening again in Harlow and hundreds of jobs are coming to our town. We have to do everything we can to regenerate our town centre and bring good shops to replace those who have sadly closed. In order to cut taxes for lower earners, David Cameron said that over the next few years those who work 30 hours a week on the minimum wage will not pay any income tax. Already the income tax free threshold has gone up from £7,000 to £10,500. The Government has pledged the creation of three million apprenticeships on top of the two million we had in the last five years. In Harlow alone, over the past five years apprenticeships increased by over 100% and unemployment has fallen substantially. I am also campaigning for free WiFi across our town. We are the birthplace of fibre optic technology, without Harlow the internet would have never been possible. We should push the

Robert visiting Astro Lighting during the campaign

dream of the inventors even further by ensuring that those who need access to the internet can do so at low cost. On the NHS the Prime Minister has recently spoken of increased hours and days for GP surgeries. It was recently reported that West Essex doctors have had a fund of £24 million from the Government to improve services. On fuel bills we need to do everything we can to keep fuel duty and energy bills at affordable levels and I will do my bit in Parliament to try and help where I can. In terms of housing the Government promised 200,000 affordable new homes and they are extending the Right to Buy scheme, while also starting a new saving scheme to help people buy their first home. There will also be a referendum on the UK membership of the European Union by 2017. This should settle the question of Europe for a generation and help us deal with issues like immigration and pressure on public services. Very best wishes, Robert

Venture Into Volunteering Now the nice weather is upon us you may be thinking of getting involved in some outdoor volunteering. A few projects are looking to recruit gardeners for an hour or two per week, no qualifications needed, just an interest in things horticultural. Enjoy sports? Parkrun organise a very popular 5k run in Harlow every Saturday and rely on volunteers for the smooth running of this event and would like to hear from people who can join the team to set up / pack up the event, act as a marshal etc. The commitment only needs to be the occasional Saturday. Sunday 21st June sees the NSPCC’s 5K AND 10K Hoohaah race at Hatfield Forest and volunteers are needed to act as marshals for this fundraising event. All Ability Sports and Leisure’s aim is to increase awareness, and inspire people with a disability to take up healthy and active lifestyles. Volunteers are needed to support the activities of this valuable group especially people keen to join their committee. Perhaps you have marketing skills to share, or can offer some secretarial help? Some other organisations currently looking for people like you to get involved include: drivers for the new Bounty Club organised by the Michael Roberts Charitable Trust, a Treasurer is sought by Shopmobility, and volunteers to support people recovering from drug and alcohol problems are needed, full training for this role is provided.

local business people in person Name and Business: Dave Harris from bathroom design and installation company - DJH Design.

What do you like doing when you’re not working? Cycling, badminton, table tennis and drinking cider.

Where do you live? I’ve lived in Church Langley for the past 15 years.

I set up my business because… I didn’t enjoy my job in electronics. So, I enrolled on a plumbing course at Harlow College (ASOCN) and when I qualified, I quit my job in order to concentrate on DJH-DESIGN. I have now been self-employed for over ten years.

What’s your favourite local shop? My new favourite shop is Stort Valley Cycles at Eastwick Farm. Since agreeing to a charity cycle ride this August, I find myself in there a lot! What’s your favourite local venue? For music & beer - The Rose & Crown in Stortford and for a family meal - Harlow Mill or The John Barleycorn.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? I accepted a place in “Team GOSH” cycle team to ride a 100 miles charity event. I chose GOSH because of my daughter is under their care. To find out more of our story or if you would like to sponsor me go to www.justgiving.com/davidjharris111.

What do you like best about Harlow? For my working life – all the merchants, shops and stores I use on a regular basis are within 3 miles of my house, as are the majority of my customers! Away from work, I can hop on the bike and within a couple of minutes; the country roads open up before me.

Favourite one liner or saying? “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” Leonardo da Vinci.

book launch Jimmy Peel: Evacuated 1939-1945

Well-known local art tutor and Old Harlow resident, Jim Peel, launched his memoirs from World War Two at St John’s Arts and Recreation Centre, off Market Street, Old Harlow on Sunday 19th April. “Jimmy Peel: Evacuated 1939 -1945” is an account by a young imaginative boy who was evacuated in 1939 aged eight years old from Hackney to Sawbridgeworth. This was a completely new world for him and influenced the rest of his life, sparking his love of the countryside, art and music. If you haven’t seen any of Jim’s water colours at local exhibitions, you may have seen him performing with the New Edition Singers where he is particularly known for his comic touch. Jim’s booklet gives a vivid and affectionate account of life with “Granny” Turner in Station Road. He is still friends today with some of the people who shared his adventures over seventy years ago. He describes his school days at the National School off Vantorts Road, going camping with the Scouts at High Wych, putting on a pantomime and encounters with ghosts and ghoulies as well as local personalities such as the bargees, Charlie “Hermit” and Mr Catchpole, the dentist.

Jim earned a tanner a week gardening at Landguard, a large house on the hill. Here he met Anthony Devas ARA RP (1911-1958), a leading landscape and portrait artist. His portrait of Jim was published in the “Listener Magazine” in October 1941 and now appears as the front cover of Jim’s memoirs. The 40 page illustrated booklet is available from the St John’s ARC Office (01279 442447 or email info@stjohnsarc.org.uk) for £5.30 including postage and package or £3.95 if collected in person.

Do you want to burn calories, strengthen your heart, tone legs; hips and glutes whilst saving money? You couldn’t be blamed for mistaking this as the sales blurb for the latest diet fad or yet another celebrity endorsed video. There’s even a chance you’ve the ingredients for this lifestyle transformation languishing in your garage or shed. You’d need look no further than cycling – yes cycling; the pastime you likely ceased the moment after you past your driving test. Aside from the physical benefits cycling is inordinately good for the good ol’ grey matter – a true legal high. Exercise releases chemicals called endorphins – not to be confused with dolphins; they’re completely different. Said endorphins interact with brain receptors which trigger feelings of wellbeing – which if harnessed gives you a positive and energised outlook on life. With a healthier body and improved view on life increased self-esteem ensues. I can assure you that these claims aren’t the yarn from a snake oil salesman – there based on facts. There’s a tangible satisfaction in cycling from point A to B and realising that you’ve accomplished it under your own power – and saved money in the process. If this step you’ve taken towards improved health wasn’t enough you’ve also made a contribution towards a healthier environment for everyone – no matter how minuscule you think your input has been it shouldn’t be underplayed. With all these plus points and more what’s holding you back? “It’s an expensive hobby” I hear you say; well it can be if you jump headlong into a sea of drag coefficient reducing lycra – but it needn't be. It’s safe to say that here at the Hub and Spoke we’re the bicycle equivalent of the Rag ’n’ Bone man; so should the need arise and you’ve a bicycle that’s seen better days we’ve a plethora of quality salvaged bicycle components to get you back on

the road pronto! Aside from repairs we also recycle abandoned, salvaged and donated bicycles and then offer them for sale at realistic prices. Our focus is swayed towards getting and keeping people on bicycles rather than making huge sums of money; we are after all a not for profit organisation. Once you’re on the road and enjoying the benefits cycling brings we want you to remain out and about for longer and importantly safely. Therefore we also teach bicycle maintenance in order for you to keep your bicycle in tip top condition. The Hub and Spoke was established in 2011 by Essex County Council with the primary plan of encouraging the Harlow community to embrace cycling. Later in the same year it was taken over by a not for profit Community Interest Company by five volunteer directors and staffed by volunteer mechanics and ride leaders. The following might sound whimsical but hear me out… Harlowites are in a privileged position to have countryside on their doorstep; and a 30 mile network of cycling routes (the foresight of architect and town planner Sir Frederick Gibberd). A cycling infrastructure that many towns can only look upon with equal amounts of awe and bewilderment as to why they're being woefully under used. As opposed to the days when Harlow was, for the most part, a new town and its inhabitants descended on said cycle routes in swarms. Granted people work further afield these

The aim being to reclaim and utilise the myriad of cycle routes that criss cross our town. Try setting aside just one day a week in which you can commit to cycling to work or cutting out a car journey? Or if it’s just an excuse to meet new people in a relaxed atmosphere you’ll equally find one of our shorter more leisurely rides spot on, exploring areas even long-term residents of Harlow never knew existed.

property column Colour - a home sellers best friend... If you’re living in Harlow and thinking of selling your home, you may have started thinking about ‘selling prep’. This is a term used by lots of estate agents in Harlow and it refers to getting your home ship-shape and ready to sell. You might have been considering giving the garden a facelift, maybe even putting in an extension or a new bathroom or kitchen. There are so many options when it comes to adding as much value as possible to your home (read our post “How to add value and sell faster”) but believe it or not, adding a splash of colour makes a huge difference too. Here are our top tips for using colour to really show off your home for sale: 1. Give your front door some love Is your front door looking a bit shabby and in need of TLC? Giving it a fresh lick of paint not only makes your door happy but can drastically improve the look of the frontage of your property too. We find that blue, green and red are the best colours to go for if you want maximum impact. 2. Skirting board and ceiling touch-ups I know as a colour link this seems tenuous but giving your skirting boards and ceilings a fresh lick of white paint can have a surprising effect on the neat appearance of a room. We often neglect to pay attention to these areas but remember buyers look EVERYWHERE. 3. Small space? No worries! If you don’t live in an 8 bedroom mansion it can be hard to create the illusion of space, especially with all your bits and pieces floating about. Our top tip for cosy-sized homes is to keep your colour scheme light and bright. Magnolia, pale duck egg blue, salmon pinks and even pale greens and greys are all great if you’re

keeping up with interior trends. Banishing dark paint will illuminate your rooms and make them look bigger. 4. It’s not all about paint Adding colour doesn’t have to be about getting the paintbrush out. Adding contemporary wallpaper as a feature in a dining room or bedroom is on trend and is a slightly less messy way to give your rooms some personality on the cheap. 5. Colourful furnishings This is probably one of the cheapest ways to impress your buyers subliminally when they come to view your home, particularly if you live in a new build property. New-build tend to be decorated as a very blank canvas to appeal to as many people as possible, but this can come across as bland. So to push past the plain look, accessorise with bright scatter cushions, feature ornaments, bright flowers and lampshades to give your rooms a pick-me-up. It can be hard to know when to stop when it comes to preparing your home, so it’s best to ask a friend to help you focus on between 1 and 3 rooms that need attention the most. Adding a splash of colour can make you, and your potential buyers, feel happy even on a down day so try out some of these techniques and let us know how you get on! We’d love you to tweet us some pictures of your colour experiments to @ PPropertyShop. Free Cakes for kids Creative Cake contributions! Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. The cakes are baked by volunteers from our community with your kid’s favourite theme or style. Free, friendly and confidential.

In May we were approached by Maybury Open Door to make a cake for their 10th Anniversary celebration. While a change from children’s birthday cakes, we were delighted to be a small part in the celebration of this wonderful local charity. Massive thanks needs to go to the bakers Karen, Reanna and Sara who baked a selection of cakes for the event.

Maybury Open Door is open to all and supports a wide range of adults including elderly, people with a disability, homeless, isolated people and others who just need to venture out and meet new friends. The centre seeks to promote the ability of people, and to encourage them to take an active role.

Tel

The centres give support and encouragement by providing opportunities for community integration, helping and supporting people in positive and practical ways. Some people need extra specific individual attention and support, a safe and friendly environment, where they can feel accepted and allowed to flourish as an individual, meeting with people who have a desire and determination to help and encourage them. No matter how extreme an individual’s circumstances may seem to be, with support and encouragement, their lives can be enhanced.

Thank you to Catherine for baking.

Simply Fit

I initially formed the A&A brand in 1977 with a successful Enfield based construction company, and after moving to Harlow myself in 1981 and living in the town for a few years it became apparent that the rapidly growing town had room for another double glazing company. So A&A Windows was formed with the intentions of becoming the number 1 choice for Harlow and the surrounding areas for all home improvement needs.

We are a local kitchen & bathroom installation company. We are open 7 days a week and have a wide range of over 500 kitchens to choose from. Nothing is made as standard, everything is to your own specifications. We offer a “one stop shop” i.e project manage for you and arrange plastering, tilers, electrics, plumbing etc. and undertake any type of building work i.e .conservatories, small extensions, windows & moving walls.

We decided to advertise in the CM17 magazine, as without doubt the Church Langley and Newhall development is the biggest growth in houses that Harlow has seen. So when the opportunity arose 10 years ago to advertise in a professionally produced magazine which was guaranteed to be delivered to 1000’s of homes every month, it was a no brainer in our opinion, and we have and continue to install in the CM17 area every week since!

Painting, Decorating

When I first called Lorraine to enquire about advertising in CM17 we just clicked and I knew it was the right choice for me. I have had plenty of work over the years from customers in the CM17 area whether they are new or returning customers. I also now get recommendations on the CM17 Mums Facebook page, so I must be doing something right and I have even done some work for local celebrity Jeff Brazier and for Lorraine herself! Moving forward I would like to stay busy but also possibly win the lottery one day!

We Chose to advertise with CM17 as it is a good local business that we can trust. Over the years we have built up an excellent relationship with CM17.

Graham School of Dance Graham School of Dance are pleased to have been advertising with CM17 for ten years – and are delighted to report that our classes are growing and pupils going from strength to strength! We recently introduced STREET DANCE at Church Langley Community Centre on Saturdays, as well as fun ‘Melody Bear’ classes for our youngest pupils age 2-3 – these classes are in addition to our outstanding tuition for children in Ballet, Tap and Modern Dance.

As well as at Church Langley classes for children age 2-8, we also run lessons at our main 6 studio premises in Bishop’s Stortford. Our exam results are always excellent, and every year pupils are invited to take part in our Junior Showcase or in our Main Show in a professional theatre setting. So, if your child loves to learn and perform, do contact us. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01279 410345

Mastersons funeral Home

Giddings lane wills

I am a fully qualified Funeral Director who has been in the profession since 1985. Having worked for the large corporate companies I decided to follow my heart and carry out the duties of a Funeral Director as a truly independent, family run business. We started our business in 2003.

Giddings Lane Wills and Estate Planning are local specialists, providing a first class service in a personal, friendly and professional manner, all in the comfort of your own home.

As the years have passed, the family business, with dad (Patrick) and mum (Elizabeth) and all our fantastic staff, has gone from strength to strength. Giving the families we are honoured to serve, the professional, dignified, personal service that they so truly deserve and we will always continue to do that. Funeral Directors are not all the Same. We Congratulate Lorraine and all the Team at CM17 on their 10th anniversary and are proud to support another family business and have done so since the very first issue.

The business was started in 2004 and we decided to advertise in the original black and white Church Langley Monthly magazine in order to reach local people. We have advertised in the magazine ever since and to date we have written Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, and provided expert advice to hundreds of clients in the CM17 postcode area alone. We find that ‘CM17’ is a magazine that people hang on to, rather than dispose of like they would a newspaper, so for us we congratulate you on reaching your 10th anniversary and long may you continue!

POLICING OUR Harlow North PCSO Chrisie Goodman

Summer has arrived with the promise of long sunny days and warm evenings with many of us enjoying our gardens and open spaces to entertain family and friends. Unfortunately for some this means problems of noise from neighbours having parties and late night music or smoke from BBQ’s and bonfires. Complaints of excess noise are dealt with by the Environmental Health Service of Harlow Council, not by the Police, unless there is the possibility of public disorder or a criminal offence taking place. However, if you hear noises that suggest that Surgeries Wed 10-Jun 4:00-17:30pm at Old Harlow Library and Mon 29-Jun 10:00-12noon at Old Harlow Baptist Church Hall. Tel 101 ext 300285 Email

someone is in danger, you should contact the Police. Smoke from BBQ’s or bonfires should also be reported to Harlow Environmental Health Department on 01279 446655. Problems of youths playing football in the shopping areas and housing estates have already started to occur. Harlow Council has put up signs in many of these areas stating that the area is a “No Ball Games Area”. Bylaw s.235 Local Government Act 1972. Recently I have been discussing with school children issues surrounding behaviour, bullying and cyber bullying. This can also occur in adulthood. What is bullying? Bullying can be really upsetting but affects many people, young and old in lots of different ways. There are many different types of bullying. Here are just a few examples: • Verbal abuse, swearing, or calling someone names. • Hitting, kicking and other forms of physical abuse. • Not actually using violence, but threatening to do so. • Taking or hiding someone’s belongings. • Ignoring someone, or getting others to ignore them. • Leaving someone out of games or activities. • Cyber bullying. Bullies might not be people at school - they could be:

30

• A member of your family or a family friend. • Someone you see on the way to or from school. Bullying can affect people in lots of different ways: • They might feel scared or depressed. • Maybe they don’t want to leave the house or go to school. • They may become ill through stress, lack of sleep or loss of appetite. What is cyber bullying? Lots of people have mobile phones and use apps like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Twitter. Cyber bullying is all about using the internet via mobile phones, laptops and other technology to bully people. It includes: • Sending or posting abusive messages, comments, texts or emails. • Making silent calls. Often cyber bullies feel braver because they can’t be seen, but it can be the most traceable form of bullying because there’s evidence that it’s happened.

LOCAL COMMUNITy No matter how bad bullying can seem, many incidents of bullying are not actually crimes, and therefore might not be a matter for the police. The best people to deal with them are parents, teachers or other responsible adults. But some types of bullying are illegal and should be

reported to us, this includes bullying that involves: • Harassment and intimidation over a period of time including calling someone names or threatening them, making abusive phone calls, and sending abusive emails or texts (one incident is not normally enough to get a conviction). • Anything involving hate crimes.

Church langley PCSO Phyllis Chipchase

Crime statistics for this month from 14th April -16th May as follows:

Please keep to the speed limit and drive to road conditions.

Obstruction - 1 When parking your vehicle please show consideration for other road users/pedestrians by not parking too close to junctions in a manner that does not make it difficult to see on coming traffic.

I have also received complaints about loose dogs. If you are a dog owner please keep your dog under control, if your dog will not return or stop on your command they should be on a lead or muzzled.

Burglary - 2 Entry in both cases was through rear patio doors. Be neighbourly and look out for each other report any suspicious activity/people in the area. Perhaps think about starting up Neighbourhood Watch in your area.

Where down time has occurred from incidents I have been visiting local community groups and meeting with residents. Last month I had the pleasure of attending VE celebrations with Help the Aged Harlow at the Leah and Manning Centre we all had a fabulous time. I have also been made the single point of contact for elderly residents and dementia suffers, if you have a relative or neighbour who you may have concerns about please contact me so that I can make contact to help in any way I can. Sometimes just a chat over a cup of tea, help with transport to a coffee morning or lunch club can have amazing results in the life of someone who is lonely.

Theft of vehicle - 0 Theft from vehicle - 1 This was theft from a Transit van. Thieves are targeting these types of vehicles as often they contain expensive power tools. Is your van as secure as it should be? Where possible lock your van in a garage. Take portable items from your van. If the van has to be left outside, park the rear doors to a wall making them impossible to open fully. If the van is side entry fit a good lock/padlock. Think about installing a bulk head so entry to the rear of the vehicle is not possible from cab. Install a metal storage container which is bolted to the floor. Fit an alarm. Yet again be vigilant and report anything suspicious! Road traffic collisions - 3

Harlow Chorus

‘A Summer Serenade’ Alex Chaplin returns Words by Mick Rumens

Our Musical Director, Alex Chaplin, has returned to rehearse the Chorus for this summer concert, which closes our 2014/2015 season. We will have five soloists for our programme, Christine Buras and Alys Roberts; sopranos, Glenn Kesby; counter-tenor, William Blake; tenor, and Julian Choux Lambert; bass. The second item on the programme is by Marc-Antoine Charpentier who was a French composer of the Baroque period, born in 1643 in or near Paris, he died in 1704. He was the son of a master scribe who had very good connections with influential families in the Parliament of Paris. Marc- Antoine had a very good education and registered for law school in Paris at 18 years of age, but withdrew after just one semester. He then spent two or three years in Rome where he studied music with Giacomo Corissimi and is also known to have had contact with poet-musician Charles Coyeau d’Assoucy, who was composing for the French Embassy in Rome.

On his return to France he began working as house composer to Marie de Lorraine, duchesse de Guise, known familiarly as “Mlle de Guise”, who gave him an ‘apartment’ in the recently renovated Hotel de Guise, one of the new apartments in the stable wing suitable for a courtier. He was a prolific composer, producing compositions of the highest quality in several genres. For many years he composed predominantly for the theatre, collaborating with Moliere, however after a period of sickness at the age of fifty hindered his becoming “sousmaitre de chapelle” at the royal court, he received an appointment as master of music at a Jesuit college. From then on he wrote almost exclusively sacred music. His mastery in writing sacred vocal music, above all, was recognised and hailed by his contemporaries. The Te Deum is one of his best works, and listeners may recognise the prelude as the signature tune for the European Broadcasting Union used in the opening credits for Eurovision Song Contests.
