THE

CM17

WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The July edition of the cm17 connection magazine... The warmer weather (notice I didn’t say sunny or summer!) sees the continuation of our favourite outdoor events. The whole of CM17, the rest of Harlow and beyond has a plethora of things to keep us busy in the run up to and during the summer holidays. Aren’t we lucky! Take a look at our extended community pages and also the what’s on section to plan your July - lots of outdoor concerts and picnics and there’s even a camp out with outdoor cinema! We have some great local features this month too. Passmores teacher, Russell King (or Mr King or just “sir”?) launched his novel Face-Mum at the end of June and tells us a little about it on page 10. St Mary Magdalene are holding a Patronal Festival (page 14) - had to look that one up, still learning something new every day! Hang on a minute, rather than telling you, why not just flick through and find out for yourself! The Harlow business exhibition last month was a hoot and I was lucky enough to be filmed twice! Took me two weeks to pluck up the courage to watch my interview for Your Harlow (www.yourharlow.com). Have to save I was mightily relived, it was OK - I was OK - phew! I’ve posted photos and the video’s from the day on our Facebook page.

Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Good News for Parents Whenever I visit nurseries around Harlow, parents often say to me that they need more support with childcare. That is why I have campaigned hard for the government to do more to help hardworking parents. Last month the Prime Minister David Cameron announced that free childcare will be doubled from 15 to 30 hours a week by 2017, with pilot programmes launching in some areas as early as September 2016. Extra help will also be provided for two year olds with parents of lower incomes. There has also been assistance for families with the Marriage Allowance. If your income is £10,600 or less, you may be able to reduce your husband, wife or civil partner’s tax by £212 by claiming the Marriage Allowance. In addition there is the pupil premium, which ensures that money goes to schools with pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. Provisional allocations for the coming year show that 3,670 pupils in Harlow are eligible for the pupil premium, meaning a total grant to Harlow of over £4.3 million over the coming year. Free Wi-Fi for Harlow Harlow is the birthplace of fibre optic technology. Without the genius of Sir Charles Kao and George Hockham working at what became the Nortel laboratories, the internet would never have been possible. I believe we need to carry on this tradition by rolling out free Wi-Fi for residents across Harlow, starting in the town centre and then being extended community by community. In Bishops Stortford town centre, free Wi-Fi has already been introduced at no cost, as it was sponsored by a local business.

It is good that our local council is now looking seriously at what could be done in Harlow. Free Wi-Fi would significantly reduce the costs for local residents, particularly those who don’t have access to the internet at the moment. It would make the World Wide Web accessible to everyone. If you support free Wi-Fi please sign my petition online at www.change.org/p/harlow-residents-freewi-fi-for-harlow-town-centre, or send me a Facebook message at www.facebook.com/RobertHalfon. Alternatively please email me at halfon4harlow@ roberthalfon.com On the European Union, Harlow will Decide Tuesday 9th June was a very important day for our country. As MP for Harlow, I have campaigned for an In-Out referendum on our membership of the European Union for many years. I previously campaigned with the late Tony Benn outside Parliament for an EU Referendum, even before I was elected MP. I also set up the Let Harlow Decide Website. The EU Referendum Bill, which the Prime Minister pledged he would introduce after the election, is now being put forward by the government. The referendum will mean that for the first time since 1975 the British people will finally have a chance to vote on our membership of the European Union. David Cameron has pledged reform of the EU, renegotiation of our membership, in order to get our powers back, fulfilling a key manifesto commitment. This Bill is good news for our democracy and for Harlow residents. Let Harlow decide. Very best wishes, Robert

Author Interview In conversation with local writer Russell King, author of Face-Mum So, what is Face-Mum all about? Well, the title character is missing, which is at the heart of the novel. Her sons, Michael and Paul, both find different ways of coping while she is not at home and their dad struggles with his new role as lone carer. The book is told from Michael’s point of view, as his mum’s social media messages just aren’t enough for his emotional needs. This leads him to make some unwise decisions. It is an interesting title: what should we read into it? Again it is about what’s not there: Michael cannot face his mum and the details about what is going on in her life are a mystery to him. Social media can allow people to present a version of themselves to the world and that is what happens in this book. Who will enjoy this book most? This is an impossible question really as readers mature at wildly different speeds. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone beneath the age of nine, personally. My daughter who is nearly ten enjoyed it and she is an avid reader. I hope that the students I teach will enjoy it too - they may even notice a bit of themselves in there. And then, as Harry Potter proved, taste in literature can be quite universal. How did the novel come into being? One day, while pottering about, the idea for Face-Mum popped into my head, along with those ideal starting words “What would happen if..?” The first two pages were written within minutes. The next 168 were two years in the Published by As Ever Publishing Web: facemum.wix.com/site Twitter: @face_mum Facebook: Face-Mum

crafting but I always knew that the idea was strong enough. I just hope I have done it justice: readers will let me know, I am sure. Do you have any advice for budding writers? Yes, write something! Just like runners need to build up their muscles to improve their lap times, so will you need to practice to master your art. Don’t worry about it being perfect, just scribble a first draft and take it from there. Finally, what do you hope people will take from Face-Mum? That forgiving is an act of love! Russell lives in Bishop’s Stortford and teaches English at Passmores Academy in Harlow. FaceMum is his first novel and will be available in print and online from Monday 22nd June.

Parndon Mill: open studios A hub of creativity

During the Open Studios weekend July 18th and 19th, Parndon Mill presents an almost bewildering array of skills. Along with the fine arts of painting, sculpture, printmaking and constructions, they range from blacksmithing to architecture. There is even a guitar maker and this year it will be a privilege to listen to Richard Ove Stokkereit playing one of his classical guitars from time to time in his studio. There will be three ceramics studios to view plus weaving, felt making, calligraphy and metalwork. Five glass artists will practice blowing, casting, fusing and engraving glass and offer the public the opportunity to “have a go”. Several design offices will also be open displaying graphics, web design, digital art, illustration, architecture and product design. There will also be an opportunity to watch the construction and firing of a traditional Roman dugin-the-ground kiln. The articles to be fired will be made by Harlow schoolchildren with the guidance of two of Parndon Mill’s potters and Chris Lydamore, curator of Bishop’s Stortford Museum. A complementary exhibition in The Gallery at Parndon Mill, Community Creates, includes collaborative work by arts communities, projects by schoolchildren guided by artists, and public art commissions which have involved the general public in design and construction. It shows how the greater community can be involved in the creative process, bringing it into everyday life for all to embrace and enjoy. Refreshments will be served in this delightful riverside setting providing an interesting and informative day out which will be enjoyable for the whole family.

gaston house picnic concert

West End stars perform songs from stage and screen in support of Home Start Harlow On Sunday 19th July West End stars Kate Coysten and Greg Castiglioni will be performing songs from stage and screen in a fund raising picnic concert not to be missed at Gaston House, Little Hallingbury. Local girl Kate, a former head girl at Bishop’s Stortford College, has appeared in numerous top West End shows including: Les Miserables, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Sister Act, Wizard of Oz, Stephen Ward, Made in Dagenham and this month starts in Mamma Mia. Kate and Greg became friends during their appearance on Les Miserables and have performed together in many concerts both in the UK and abroad. Concert promoter Geoff Petts commented: “Not many people can say they have worked almost continuously in the West End with stars like: Michael Crawford, Whoopi Goldberg, Lesley Garrett to name just a few. I am delighted that Kate and Greg will be performing to help raise much needed funds and awareness for Home Start Harlow.“

Home Start Harlow Being a parent, whatever your situation, can be very difficult, especially when children are young. Many parents feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the stresses of family life, particularly if they have little support from family and friends when they need it most. Venture Into Volunteering Supporting Children and Young people

Would you like to make a difference to a young person with little or no contact with their birth family? Essex County Council’s Independent Visitors Scheme is looking for adult volunteers to become Independent Visitors and establish good quality, long-term contact with individual children and young people in care. Most children and young people in care lack a consistent relationship with an adult and miss out on the experiences and opportunities this can offer them. As an Independent Visitor you will meet them about once a month to take them out, have fun and be a good role model. Some of the young people live in out-ofcounty placements and often feel isolated. They would also benefit hugely from regular visits from a volunteer.

POLICING OUR Harlow North PCSO Chrisie Goodman

I continue to try and get to all the schools in Old Harlow at the end of the school day but I can’t be in more than one place at a time! The majority of parents picking up their children by car are parking considerately but unfortunately there are still the odd few that arrive late and still think it is acceptable to park on junctions, on pavements and obstruct local residents’ driveways. You know who you are. Several warning notices have been put on vehicles and I have also spoken to drivers about their inconsiderate parking. Surgeries Wed 1-Jul 16:30-18:00, Wed 8-Jul 16:0017:00, Sat 25-Jul 10:30-12noon at Old Harlow Library and Mon 20-Jul 11:00-12noon and Mon 27-Jul 10:00-12noon at Old Harlow Baptist Church Hall. Tel

PC Neil Armor, who is the local Neighbourhood Police Officer for Old Harlow, will be giving parking tickets if this continues, so please be warned. During the summer weather why not walk and give the children and yourselves some exercise or try and get together with other parents to lift share. At the end of July again Harlow Council will be filling up the paddling pool at the Norman Booth recreation ground which is one of the most popular pools so I shall be patrolling the area whenever I am on duty and hope to see many of you at the pool area. Local Community Meeting Wednesday 1st July 2015 at 19:30 to be held at Fawbert and Barnard school London road - please come along to meet members of your local neighbourhood policing team.

Don’t Give Thieves an Easy Ride! More than half of car crime is opportunistic but by taking a few simple steps you can outsmart thieves and reduce the chances of your car being targeted. Catalytic converters are also a target for thieves. Park in Safe Areas Choose somewhere busy and well lit with good surveillance. Areas where there are few people about, several escape routes and cars hidden out of view are attractive to thieves. Use Security Devices To reduce the likelihood of your vehicle being stolen from your driveway, and if you have a garage; take the time to clear enough room in your garage for your vehicle to be parked in there overnight. Lock your garage too and never leave your car keys on show by your front or back door. Thieves can put implements through your letterbox to reach them. Think about wheel protection. Thieves target alloy wheels and tyres from steel wheels so protect them

30

using locking wheel nuts which are inexpensive and easy to fit. Fitting an immobilizer or alarm system is a sure way to prevent your vehicle being stolen. Etch your vehicle registration number onto all glass surfaces. This service may be free from vehicle glaziers but check your car insurance details first. If you have a car stereo, choose one that’s removable or has a removable front cover. Make sure you take it with you when you leave the car and mark the stereo with a unique identifying reference. Keep Doors locked and Windows Shut It may sound obvious but unlocked doors and open windows are invitations to thieves so make sure your vehicle is secure even if you are only popping into a shop, paying for petrol or getting car park ticket. Don’t forget to lock the boot and sunroof too. It only takes seconds for a thief to make off with your belongings.

LOCAL COMMUNITY If your vehicle has remote locking, please check that the doors have locked before you leave it. Thieves in the area may use a device to block the remote locking signal so check your vehicle is locked by pulling the door handle before leaving it. Don’t Leave Anything on Display Thefts from vehicles greatly outnumber thefts of vehicles so never leave your property on display on the dashboard or front or back seats. Don’t forget to wipe away the marks left by the suction pad on your sat nav as they may lead thieves to believe it’s in your car somewhere. Keep an eye out for devices on the market that can hold sat navs in place without using sucker pads.

We have had numerous calls regarding nuisance bikes being driven at speed on paths up by the water tower and along Kingsdon Lane. I have the index of one of these bikes and a home visit is planned.

Criminal damage to the lighting outside the Cricket pavilion has occurred, reports of several teenagers running about on the roof have also been received, any ideas? This is blatant Criminal damage and those responsible will be dealt with when identified.

Gardening in July with keeping healthy in the sun By Pippa Greenwood

There is something lovely about this part of the summer. The veg plot tends to be in overdrive and there are some delicious fruits cropping too. But sometimes your beloved flower beds and borders, pots and planters can be looking ever-so-slightly sorry for themselves. There is often a distinct mid-summer-flop. You planted up your flower beds and numerous pots and containers to make them look good but how can you keep them looking on top form for as long as possible? Regular feeding is essential, particularly for anything growing in a container. Often crammed into a fairly small space and with compost whose fertiliser content is pretty well used up after a few weeks, by July plants in pots can be close to starving if you’ve not fed them regularly. At this time of year I would still feed herbaceous perennials and annuals growing in open ground too, but I suggest you resist the temptation to feed shrubs as these could be encouraged to put on new growth which will not be toughened up enough by the time winter comes; this late growth is then very prone to frost damage. A tomato feed with a high potash level works well for anything that you grow primarily for the flowers so every time you feed your tomatoes make up a bit of extra feed and pop it onto flowering plants. I tend to buy concentrated tomato food by the mini-tanker full as this works out much more economical! Make sure that everything is deadheaded regularly, both the faded flowers and if necessary remove the flower stem too. On soft stemmed plants you may be able to make to do it using your thumb nail, but a pair of sharp scissors or similar often makes for the quickest, neatest and least messy job. Do this as soon as the flower starts to deteriorate so that no energy whatsoever is used to form seed

32

heads and it will make a huge difference to the performance you see the plants put on over the next few weeks. I am a great believer in the ‘hair cut’ approach where perennials are given a trim using scissors or shears as soon as their flowering period is over. Do this promptly and follow it with a good feed and you can often encourage a second, later flush of flowers too. If plants have become a little too tall or there has been a lot of rainfall they can literally flop over, clogging up the lawn on borders next to the grass, and generally looking a real mess. This is easily solved if you check that stakes and other supports are still doing their job and re-position them if necessary, taking care not to snap any flower stems in the process. You may even find that you need to add a bit of extra support or tie in a few of the taller or more wayward stems – the foam-covered wire works really well for this. At this time of year many flowers succumb to common diseases. This is how to deal with them: Powdery mildew: keep the plant well watered at the base but avoid wetting the leaves and spray with a suitable fungicide if necessary Aphids: remove with a strong jet of water, introduce ladybirds or spray with an insecticide Leaf spots: just pick off the worst affected leaves Rusts: pick off the worst affected leaves, try to keep the foliage dry and spray with a suitable insecticide Caterpillars: pick off by hand or spray with a suitable biological or chemical control

pippa Greenwood Keeping on top of these small problems is essential - regular checks should allow you to take prompt action, so avoiding too much damage occurring and often meaning that you do not even need to spray. Weeds tend to be growing rapidly too, so try to remove these as they make for a lot of competition for water, food and even light. Pulling them out or hoeing them off when they are still fairly small is a much easier and more efficient way to deal with them than trying to pull out a massive, long-rooted triffid that has already done a lot of damage.

drenching is a lot more beneficial than very frequent but light waterings. So, with a little extra TLC everything in the garden can still look gorgeous for a long while yet! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com ladybirds & other biocontrols, Nemaslug, SoftTie, weeders, pop-up crop covers, , copper tape and lots more besides.

If the weather is dry, regular watering will also help to keep your flower beds and containers looking their best. To minimise water wastage and the risk of those delicate petals becoming scorched, I suggest that you should only water in the evening or, if this is not possible, very early in the morning. TWO QUICK, EASY AND DELICIOUS BANANA RECIPES Bananas Suzette 4 firm bananas 2 oz butter 2 tbs demerara sugar Grated rind and juice of a large orange 2 tbs rum, brandy or Cointreau

Halve the bananas lengthways. Melt the butter in a large frying pan. Saute them until lightly golden. Sprinkle in the sugar, let it caramelise for a minute, then pour in the juice & rind and let it bubble up over the bananas and reduce a little. Pour on the alcohol and light it immediately. Serve with ice cream. (These are so delicious you may want 1½ bananas per person!)

Caribbean Bananas 1 lb bananas weighed in the skin 2 tbs sultanas 1 tbs rum and 1 tbs orange juice (or 2 tbs juice) 6 tbs dark soft brown sugar 300g (10 oz) thick yoghurt 150ml (5 oz) double cream

Soak the sultanas in the rum, juice and 1 tbs sugar. Slice the bananas and add to the juice, leave for half an hour. In the meantime, whip the yoghurt and cream together until soft peaks form. Fold 2/3rds into the banana mixture, pile into a suitable dessert bowl, then spoon over the remaining cream. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top and refrigerate overnight. The sugar melts over the topping.

Harlow Chorus

39th season finale at Thaxted Church 18 July at 7.30pm Words by Mick Rumens

This concert, of three celebratory pieces, will send us all off for the rest of the summer in a joyful mood. The Bach and Charpentier works have been addressed in the past two magazines, the third is a work by Purcell. England had been involved in the battle of Steenquerke, 1692, part of the Nine Years War between France and a coalition of armies from the Netherlands, England, Scotland and Germany. Charpentier’s flamboyant Te Deum in D was penned as a celebration, it is believed, of the French victory in that battle. Although England was engaged in this war, it appears to have impinged little on the general merriment of Restoration London. Come ye Sons of Art, by Purcell, is the musical accompaniment to a birthday party for Queen Mary II, held on April 30 1694. And

for all Purcell’s meticulous economy and austere command of his forces, all that is driven toward one overriding objective – to party with as much fun as possible. The work bristles with dance rhythms, and does daring things with musical form, most famously that of the ground bass – a recurring bass line – which is deployed with brilliance under the duet ‘Sound the Trumpet’, for which perhaps the entire work is best known. 2015 – 2016 is our 40th anniversary season, which we are planning to make as memorable as possible. Two dates for your diaries for starters: 7th November in Epping when the programme includes Britten’s Agnus Dei from the War Requiem, Finzi’s Lo, the full final sacrifice and Chilcott’s Requiem; and on 12th December, at Chelmsford Cathedral, Handel’s Messiah.

Tickets: Thaxted Advance bookings: £15 full, £13 concessions, £7 under 16’s. (all reserved)

The Henry Moore Primary School Henry Moore Children Exhibit Their Work at The Gibberd Gallery This was an exiting opportunity for children from years 1-6 to get involved with the local community. Teachers selected talented artists from their classes to join an Art Club which would focus on creating work for a school’s project. The theme for this project was ‘Jazz’ and the children completed drawings and sculptures which were displayed in the ‘Glass Hideaway’ gallery, at the Gibberd Gallery, and curated by the Young Curators. First off, we listened to some jazz music, then we drew some musical instruments. I drew a clarinet and a trumpet, we had a choice of a clarinet, trumpet, piano, saxophone and guitar. For the third week, we made a cardboard cut out of an instrument of our choice, then we covered it in paper mache. For the fourth week we lined sections off and drew different patterns in each one. Then the work was sent to the Gibberd Gallery. I enjoyed it a lot and I wish it was still on. By Billy Warrilow - Y5
