WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The August edition of the cm17 connection magazine... If, like me, you are a parent or carer of a school age child or children, join me in raising your hands and shouting, “Yesss!” The school holidays are here! The past few weeks have been manic: productions, concerts, results, certificates, uniform fittings, saying good bye, saying hello, hormones... And we experience this just with our own children... imagine a whole classroom of them! I’m counting my blessings... As a working mum, I’m looking forward to spending some time with my daughter over the holidays - just the two of us and then, perhaps, catching up with friends and family. And we certainly won’t be stuck for anything to do in August - there is heaps going on, not to mention lots of music festivals who knew that there were so many locally?! Just have a flick through the pages to get a taster of the fun things that you can do this month. Normally at this time of year the weather takes a nosedive and I reminisce about the summer of 1978 (remember the ladybirds?). When I was a child summers were warm and winters were cold... or is that just my rose coloured memory making it so? Either way, I hope that Mother Nature takes a step back down memory lane with me and provides us with weather that we can all enjoy. I wish you all a wonderful summer, spent with the ones that you love - go make some memories!

Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow
Dear Resident, A Budget For Workers This month the government announced in the Summer Budget that there would be a National Living Wage. In the budget it was also announced that those on the minimum wage working 30 hours a week will not have to pay any income tax. The Prime Minister has pledged 2 million more jobs this Parliament, 3 million more apprentices and £8 billion extra for the NHS. I have campaigned passionately for a long time for a strong minimum wage, a living wage and lower taxes for lower earners. The new living wage for Harlow residents will reach £9 an hour by 2020. Those currently on the minimum wage will see their pay rise by over a third in the next five years. This will be a cash increase for a full time worker of over £5,000.
A Budget for Housing Also announced in the budget were a number of measures to tackle rents, to build more affordable homes and to increase home ownership. There are plans in place to reduce rents paid by tenants in social housing in England by 1% a year for 4 years from 2016. As a result, by 2020 rents will be 12% lower. There will also be a number of measures to build more affordable homes. Those on lower incomes will be given special discounts to buy their council or housing association home through the Right to Buy Scheme. This will possibly benefit up to 1,800 families locally. In addition Harlow has received £3 million in the New Homes Bonus which will allow more affordable homes to be build. Train Services This month I met with representatives of the local train operating authority, Abellio, and Network Rail to discuss improvements to the stations at Harlow Town, Harlow Mill, Roydon and Sawbridgeworth, as well as the rest of the line. I hope that over the coming year Harlow residents will be able to benefit from a more flexible and satisfactory system of travel. Roads Essex County Council have just published the latest consultation on Junction 7A. I would urge all residents to put forward their views about the consultation to me via halfon4harlow@ roberthalfon.com, which I will faithfully represent to Essex County Council. Very best wishes, Robert

local business people in person Name and Business: Bradley Goodman co-director of Harlow Garden Services Ltd. Where do you live? I currently live in Church Langley with my family and have lived here for two years. What’s your favourite local shop? I do like going down Fine in Old Harlow to try different beers. What’s your favourite local venue? I enjoy going to the John Barleycorn for a meal with my family, or the crown in Old Harlow to catch up with friends. What do you like best about Harlow? The fact that within a few minutes you can be in the countryside or a short train journey you are in London. What do you like doing when you’re not working?
I like nothing more than spending time with my family and going on a long walk with my 2 beagles. I set up my business because… I have enjoyed horticulture from a young age and have been best friends with my business partner since we were little so it seemed a natural thing to do - and we have never looked back! What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? The birth of my first daughter who is now 7 months old - I don’t know where the time has gone! Favourite one liner? “I think we’re just out of Waldorfs.” Basil Fawlty, you have to see the whole episode to understand it properly but it is classic Fawlty Towers!

Local charities PACT for Autism By Sam Fancett, CEO
PACT for Autism is a registered charity (No. 1148170). PACT was founded by a group parents of children on the autistic spectrum who know only too well the difficulties faced by families raising a child with Autism. PACT for Autism supports families with children and adults affected by Autism and other disabilities. By working in partnership with education and health professionals, we strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for our families. We aim to develop long term strategies with local communities that will improve living, working and social opportunities for people with Autism and similar disorders. PACT for Autism have been working tirelessly not only in our community, but with the support of Rob Halfon MP we have also had a regular voice in Parliament. We need to look at and develop strategies for employability and skills for life so that in the long term our young people have the opportunity to be as independent as

possible and be valued. PACT has a dedicated team of trustees, staff and volunteers all of whom have a wealth of experience in working with children and adults on the autistic spectrum and we’d like to thank them all for their commitment to the Charity. This is a very special year for our Charity as we celebrate 10 years of PACT! We’ve all probably aged twice as much, but our drive and passion for raising awareness of Autism and the lifelong friends we have made along the way, keeps us looking forward. To celebrate our birthday, PACT for Autism will be hosting our ‘10th Anniversary Charity Ball’ on Saturday 17th October at The Manor of Groves Hotel. A Gibberd gallery exhibition Wood, stone, steel and paint
Wood, Stone, Steel and Paint is a fascinating mix of works by two artists who have lived and worked together in Roydon in Essex for nearly 50 years.
Angela Godfey, ‘Stone Flowing’
Angela Godfrey received her first sculpture commission in 1964; in 2014 she was chosen to provide works for a prestigious project for the rebuilding of Longford cathedral in Ireland and in the intervening years has received numerous commissions. She has a gift to relate her work to specific locations, whether a nature reserve, a church interior or a building facade and these are demonstrated in the exhibition, illustrated with models, drawings, photographs and original pieces.
ash trees, a number of which will be seen in this exhibition.
Alongside these are sculptures carved in wood and stone in which texts and natural forms are intergrated into the sculptural whole. Recently she has also been using stainless steel.
www.angelagodfrey.co.uk
A common theme for both artists is a love of trees and nature. Alan’s particular passion has led him to become a keen conservationist. Angela is showing her lively and carefully observed Lake District drawings of rocks and trees. With its works varied in medium, subject matter and scale this will be an enthralling exhibition. www.alanburgess.co.uk
Alan Burgess paints in a variety of media: oils on canvas, acrylic, watercolour and gouache on paper and also draws in a range of materials. His major painting project “Fifty Great British Trees” has travelled the country in a number of exhibitions including The Tree Council, London, The Boxfield Gallery, Stevenage, Wimpole Hall, near Royston and the Westonbirt National Arboretum, Gloucestershire. The veteran oaks in the park of Hatfield House have produced some exciting paintings and now he is concentrating his attention on the endangered

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
By The Water In Ware Ware Priory Lido is open every day in August and is a great place for a swim. This walk starts and ends at the lido and celebrates Ware’s scenic riverside. Turn left along Priory Street until two footbridges lead you left across the River Lee. Turn left again along the far side. You will see several summerhouses by the water: Britain’s largest collection of riverside gazebos! Walk along the river for more than a mile, crossing a road and passing Hardmead Lock, until you see a wooden bridge ahead. Turn left over this bridge, then left and immediately right on the far side, on a tarmac path that was once a railway, following signs to Amwell Nature Reserve. Cross over a stream and under a road and continue briefly along a wooded path. Take the first left turn over a stile and turn left again over another footbridge, before taking a path right on the other side, following a line of telegraph poles up the hill. Before you reach the road again, turn sharp right up a track, with good views, that continues to climb past a wood. Eventually the track bends right to emerge between farm buildings onto a road. Turn left down the road, taking the parallel path near the “Welcome to Ware” sign. Keep on along this road, as it becomes Star Street. Here you will find several pleasant pubs, including the Angel, the Victoria and the Waterside Inn. Head right at the roundabout into High Street and turn left, just beyond the museum, into Priory Street to return to the Lido. LOCATION:

Free Cakes for kids
Creative Cake contributions! Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. The cakes are baked by volunteers from our community with your kid’s favourite theme or style. Free, friendly and confidential.
July was an unexpectedly busy month for us with six cakes leaving us for local families. Last summer we were far quieter than we had been before, which is good as it when a lot of our bakers being away on their holidays. Thankfully we managed to cover all of the cakes referred to us even if it was a bit hectic at times. We occasionally get cakes requests that are outside of our usual remit of children’s birthday cakes. This month we did two of these cakes which I thought I would share. The first one is for a family that we had previously baked a birthday cake for, we provided them a cake to celebrate Eid which coincided with their daughter being well enough to start eating solid food. The other cake was requested by Maybury Open Doors for a lady who was celebrating her 90th birthday and was shared amongst the social group she regularly attends.

Charity festival
Hatfield heath mum, Kelly Moodie, organises a weekend festival to raise funds for Harlow Fields School I’m a mother of two young boys, one of whom has sever autism and learning difficulties. Max has attending Harlow Fields now for over 2 years. Before Max attended school, we had hardly any eye contact and the worst melt downs you could imagine. We couldn’t take Max to places he had never been to before because of anxiety. He wouldn’t eat solid food or even drink juice. This school is the only specialists special needs provision in Harlow for pupils and students aged between three and nineteen who have a significant range of learning needs. Many pupils have additional physical and sensory disabilities and some have special needs associated with autism and sever communication difficulties.
The school really doesn’t get enough credit for what they have to tackle on a daily basis, and without the support from the school and its staff, I don’t know where I’d be right now.
Pupils come from Harlow and travel from surrounding districts as well as from Hertfordshire and outer London.
This festival is to say a big thank you for everything they’ve done for my family and other families, and to help support the ongoing hard work by raising money to help improve the facilities.
The school have helped Max and my family in ways you wouldn’t expect from a school. We now have brilliant eye contact with him and can now have enjoyable days out as a family.
Keep it up Harlow Fields, you really are making a big difference!

POLICING OUR Harlow North PCSO Chrisie Goodman A scam email is currently being sent to victims fraudulently claiming to be from the Royal Mail. The attachment on this email is known to infect the victim’s computer with CryptoLocker ransomware. One of two email types have been received by the victims, both stating that the Royal Mail are holding an item for the victim and that a response to the email is required to arrange for the item to be resent/collected. Email Type 1: Email states that they are holding a letter and there will be a £5 per day charge if the letter is not collected. It then instructs the victim to click on a link to get the letter resent. From here the ransomware infects the victims system. Email Type 2: Email states that a parcel could not be delivered and that it is waiting for collection. A link on the email is provided for further information. The link takes the victim to a page that appears to be part of the Royal Mail website where victims are requested to enter a code (believed to have been in the original email). Once the code has been entered the victim is instructed to download an application, this application downloads the ransomware. Surgeries Mon 3-Aug 11:00-12noon at Old Harlow Baptist Church Hall, Wed 12-Aug 16:3018:00 and Sat 22-Aug 10:30-12noon at Old Harlow Library Tel
101 ext 300285
Email chrisie.goodman@essex.pnn.police.uk
The ransomware encrypts files on the victim’s system and a window appears requesting a payment, to be made in Bitcoins, to decrypt the files. There is further incentive for early payment as the ransom states that the cost of decrypting the files will increase the longer the fine is outstanding. The victim is asked to pay around £300-£360 initially, rising to £600-£660 if not paid within a period of time. The victims of this fraud, although primarily individuals, does also include a number of businesses. Essex Police advises that members of the public and businesses should take the following steps to reduce the potential for falling victim to this type of malware: 1. Look at who the email is addressed to; is it generic or specifically addressed? 2. Look at the quality of the images included on the email. Harlow common PCSO Rebecca Durrant Firstly I would like to thank Potter Street School Year 6 group on their visit to Harlow Police Station! The children were taken on a tour of custody and experienced what it would be like to be a scenes of crime officer. The group had the opportunity to engage with other police officers and ask lots of questions which I believe they thoroughly enjoyed. With schools now breaking up for the summer holidays, Harlow Police would like you to enjoy your time off but

to also be safe. It is important to know what you can do to keep yourself safe while you are out and about. Recognizing and Handling Dangerous Situations Perhaps the most important way parents can protect their children is to teach them to be wary of potentially dangerous situations – this will help them when dealing with strangers as well as with known adults who may not have good intentions. Help children recognize the warning signs of suspicious behavior, such as

Also tell your children that an adult should never ask a child for help, and if one does ask for their help, teach them to find a trusted adult right away to tell what happened. You should also talk to your children about how they should handle dangerous situations. One ways is to teach them “No, Go, Yell, Tell.” If in a dangerous situation, kids should say no, run away, yell as loud as they can, and tell a trusted adult what happened right
away. Make sure that your children know that it is okay to say no to an adult in a dangerous situation and to yell to keep themselves safe, even if they are indoors. It’s good to practice this in different situations so that your children will feel confident in knowing know what to do. Surgeries TBA Tel

Church Langley PCSO Phyllis Chipchase Summer is upon us and school holidays are approaching fast, please ensure the communities children are kept safe and local residents have a peaceful and stress free life. • Please ensure that children playing outside are aware of the dangers of the roads and playing in/ around them. • When children are playing outside please be mindful of other residents and their property. I.e. if playing football use soft balls that can’t cause damage and avoid running over neighbouring front gardens to retrieve balls. • Ensure your children do not talk to strangers or accept lifts in any vehicle unless a parent has given them instruction/permission to. • Adult residents, please be extra vigilant as whilst driving in and out of the estates as during the school holidays as the numbers of children playing out in the streets will increase. • Please ensure speed limits are adhered to. During the summer months we all like to have our windows and doors open and sound does travel which causes issues for people who are trying to sleep whilst others party. When socialising and hosting BBQ’s etc
be mindful of your neighbours and ensure everyone’s quality of life is preserved. Ensure that music is turned down at a reasonable time and maybe as the evening cools down then head indoors or lower the level of conversation so as not to distress other residents. Harlow Chorus Harlow CHORUS 40th Anniversary Season Words by Mick Rumens
Following our Thaxted concert on Saturday 18th July we have all begun a well-earned holiday break before embarking on an exciting 40th anniversary season, Sept. 2015 – July 2016.
confirmed their interest to the invitation. We also go ‘on Tour’ every couple of years and plans for our next are being discussed, possibly a UK tour after recent trips to Estonia and Germany.
Our complete programme is still being finalised and full details will be available in our September column, but, of course, there will be some very special celebrations. We look forward to having all our regular supporters join us throughout the season when there may well be some unusual surprises to entertain you.
Fund raising is an increasingly important event for our committee and members, and we ended our 39th season with a couple of successful events to increase funds entering our anniversary season. The chorus runs a very good monthly ‘100’ Club, when for a regular monthly sum supporters have the chance of winning monetary prizes. Any new members for this will be very welcome and details can be found on our website.
The Chorus is very happy to welcome any new members to enjoy this season when, as already mentioned, we will be performing Handel’s Messiah in Chelmsford Cathedral on 12th December. We meet for rehearsals at St John Arts and Recreation Centre in Harlow Old Town on Monday evenings commencing 7.30pm until 10pm early in September. Harlow Chorus is still very highly regarded, not only in the UK but also in Europe. We have recently received an invitation from Paris to perform there, with a French choir, in June 2017 and they will repeat the performance with us in the UK shortly after. Confirmation of this event has still to be finalised, but many members have already
Many thanks for all your interest and support, in particular that provided by Lorraine and all the CM17 staff, and we trust that you all enjoy the school holidays with your families.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING
Shared By Christine Beetlestone
SURINAM PORK 2 lbs lean pork (or chicken) cut into bite-size pieces (although quite large as it shrinks in cooking,) MARINADE 6 oz salted peanuts 2 large cloves garlic 6 oz chopped onion 4 Tbs Soy Sauce 2 Tbs sweet chilli dipping sauce OR 1 tbs chilli sauce 3 Tbs lemon juice 1 oz brown sugar, dem. or soft Black pepper ¾ pint chicken stock made with 2 cubes
1. Put all marinade ingredients into a liquidiser and blend to a puree. Pour over the pork or chicken. This can be done the day before. 2. Heat a saute pan with 2 tbs oil, shake the marinade off the pork and quickly brown the meat, add the marinade and bring it up to a simmer, scraping all the browned bits off the bottom, simmer for 5 minutes. 3. Having browned the meat it doesn’t need cooking for more than a few minutes.
Alternative: put meat onto previously soaked skewers and marinate for at least two hours. Grill or BBQ and baste, serve with rice and pass the remaining heated sauce.

The Henry Moore Primary School Year 6 Trips to Thriftwood and Harry Potter This year has been an exciting year for Year 6, as it is the first year that we have taken a trip away from our parents overnight. In June, the current Year 6’s spent two days and one night at Thriftwood Scout Camp in Brentwood. We participated in some fantastic activities including Kayaking, Cresta Run, Climbing, Water Walking, Abseiling, Demolition and crawling in the dark through a maze! It was all so much fun! We got to sleep in dormitories with our friends, although there weren’t enough beds for the teachers, so some of them had to sleep on the floor! In the evening, we spent our money in the tuck shop and sang songs around a blazing campfire. At the end of the two days we were all exhausted, but would definitely go back if we had the chance! A week after Thriftwood, we visited the Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden for the Harry Potter World Exhibition. We had just completed our Harry Potter projects and so this was a good way to consolidate our learning and see all the magic close up! We had an amazing time, walking down Diagon alley, getting up close and personal with the monsters, riding the Hogwarts Express and even flying a broomstick! Goodbye and good luck Year 6!
