WELCOME
CONNECTION
HELLO AND WELCOME TO The october edition of the cm17 connection As I write, we’re meant to be experiencing an Indian Summer... It’s 9.25am and I have the lights on because it’s so dark outside! We’re meant to be having snow this winter and we should have had a blazing summer. Hmm. Just can’t take things for granted can you. Take me for instance. Just back from two weeks holiday, refreshed and raring to go. The magazines had been shortlisted in two categories at the Harlow Business & Community Awards - Social Media/Website and Best Small Business (I know, dead exciting!) and I had two presentations to prepare and present. On the day of the first presentation I wake up looking like I had gone ten rounds with Frank Bruno - swollen eye and boil like spots all down one side of my face! What on earth - didn’t see that coming and certainly hadn’t planned for it! Cue dark glasses and hair parted on the other side - the show went on! After the second presentation the following day (and a visit to the Doctors) I went to bed and pretty much stayed there for a week! Finally, I would like to dedicate this edition of CM17 to Christine Beetlestone - contributor of our recipe page for the past 8 years. Quite simply one in a million. An amazing, inspiring woman and boy could she cook! I admired her enormously and I know she will be missed by many, many people. So glad I knew you x
in loving memory christine beetlestone 1937 - 2015

Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Resident, Public Health England to Move to Harlow This month has been fantastic for Harlow. For years I have been campaigning for the labs of Public Health England to be relocated from Salisbury to Harlow, and last week the Chancellor announced that this will be going ahead. The move of the labs from Salisbury to Harlow is predicted to bring in 10,000 jobs and the investment into Harlow is worth £350 million. This is in addition to other major investments into Harlow announced by the government, which include a £50 million investment in the new Harlow Enterprise Zone and £10 million into Harlow’s new technical school, as well as the improvement of local roads. This is the best possible thing that could happen for Harlow families and this is a big step forward for Britain’s public health science. Public Health England’s chief executive Duncan Selbie announced that the move will provide “world-leading scientists world-class facilities in a region with the greatest concentration of academic and commercial expertise in life sciences.” Harlow Council members, staff at the Sir Charles Kao University Technical College in Harlow, and residents expressed their thrill immediately after the announcement by the Chancellor. The move of the PHE labs from Salisbury to Harlow are expected to generate additional investments in the coming years.
The 2015 Harlow Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair On the 18th September we had the annual Harlow Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair. This was my fourth annual fair in Harlow and I am pleased to announce that it was a huge success! Over 70 businesses had stalls advertising hundreds of vacancies to local job seekers and I’ve already received some good news stories. A huge thanks goes out to Stansted Airport, CB Lighting and Harlow College for sponsoring the event, as well as Ian Hudson, Debbie Sheridan (Harlow College), Mike Jackson MBE, Ruth Langham (Seetec), the team from the Harlow Job Centre, Janice Elliot (Profile PR) and of course Robert Findlay (Heart 4 Harlow) for their hard work in organising the day with my team. I must also mention the fabulous volunteers from Harlow College and Seetec – we couldn’t have done it without you. As your MP I will continue to hold the Fair each year to help bring more Jobs to Harlow! Very best wishes, Robert

Free Cakes for kids
Creative Cake contributions! Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. The cakes are baked by volunteers from our community with your kid’s favourite theme or style. Free, friendly and confidential.
September was another busy month for our Free Cakes for Kids bakers. We had several “first timers” bake some great cakes for the children referred to us. Our thanks go to: Catherine who baked the West Ham Cake (name of child obscured) for a child referred to us by Harlow Foodbank. Sally who created the delightful ‘Rainbow’ Cake. Maree who baked the very special star 1st birthday cake. Suzanne who, at very short notice, created the Minion cake for a child celebrating their birthday in refuge. Emily (group co-ordinator) for the Mini Mouse 1st birthday cake which was referred by Harlow Foodbank Jacklyn for creating the chocolate and marshmallow mountain for a child celebrating their birthday in refuge. No celebration is complete without a cake. All of the Free Cakes for Kids Harlow bakers give up their time to ensure no child goes without on their birthday. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch (details below) or come and follow us on Facebook.

Harlow Chorus Opening ‘anniversary season’ concert - St John’s Epping, Sat 7th Nov. 7.30pm Words by Mick Rumens
The Chorus will perform a Remembrance concert with works of four British composers Saturday 7th November at 7.30pm. Edward Bairstow, born in Huddersfield in 1874, became an organist and composer in the Anglican church music tradition. He became Master of Music at York Minster in 1913 and in 1932 was knighted for his services to music. He wrote 29 anthems including ‘Blessed city, heavenly Salem’ which opens our programme. Benjamin Britten was born 22nd November 1913, in Lowestoft the youngest of four children of Robert Victor Britten and his wife Edith Rhoda. Edith Britten was a talented amateur musician who gave the young Britten his first lessons in piano and notation, and he made his first attempt at composition when he was five.
Edward Bairstow
18
He started piano lessons when he was seven, and three years later began to play the viola. His War Requiem is his best known work, written for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral and was premiered in 1962. We will close the first half of the concert with Gerald Finzi’s most popular anthem, ‘Lo, the full final sacrifice”. Born in London, his father was John Abraham Finzi (of Italian Jewish descent), a successful shipbroker, who died just before his sons eighth birthday. Finzi began to study music under Ernest Farrar from 1915, whom he found a sympathetic tutor. Farrar’s death at the Western Front affected Finzi deeply. Shortly after Farrar’s death, Finzi studied privately at York Minster with the organist and choirmaster, Edward Bairstow, a strict teacher compared to Farrar.

Anniversary Season The second half of the concert will be a performance of Bob Chilcott’s Requiem, which was premiered on 13 March 2010 at the Sheldonian in Oxford by the Oxford Bach Choir and the Royal Philamonic Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Cleobury. Robert ‘Bob’ Chilcott was born 9 April 1955 in Plymouth and sang in the Choir of Kings College, Cambridge, both as a boy and as a university student. He is a prolific choral composer, conductor, and singer, based in Oxford, well known for his compositions for children’s choirs and is associated with the New Orleans Children’s Chorus and the Crescent City Festival in New Orleans. In 1985 he joined the King’s Singers, singing tenor for twelve years. He has been a composer since 1997. As a finale/encore piece the Chorus will perform the world premiere of a gift commission to mark their 40th anniversary. Dedicated to Harlow Chorus and those enlightened committee members who acquired St John’s, Old Harlow as their home base and for the use of local community organisations. It is a new choral arrangement, by Paul Ayres, of “Bless this house”, made famous by Perry Como in the 40’s and adopted in the USA as a regular Thanksgiving anthem. In addition, this new version is produced in memory of my parents, for whom I made a record of this song in 1952, and my wife who passed away last year. I’m sure that Paul Ayres will have produced a memorable choral work, which will prove a popular item for many choirs here and in the USA.
Finally, there will be an Open Rehearsal on 16th November during which our Musical Director, Alex Chaplin, will take us through a few of the ‘Messiah’ choral items. More details on our website and in the next CM17 Connection.

Franck, Schumann, Chopin Christina started learning the ‘Cello with Caroline Bosanquet when she was 7 years old, and a strong bond was formed between them very quickly at first sight, passing on to Christina two lasting gifts: the love of cello playing and the love of cats. After Caroline's untimely death, Christina was accepted to study with
Robert Max who has been teaching her for almost two years. He introduced her both to the Junior Academy of Music, which she joined a year ago, and to the intensive residential courses run by Music Works of non-‐stop coaching, sight reading, practising and performing of chamber music, where she has so far completed two courses. In addition, she has been a very keen member of the National Children's Orchestra for the last three years. rspca stort valley Would you like to help RSPCA Stort Valley help homeless cats? This is a special appeal for Fosterers needed for cats waiting for homes.
We are looking for dedicated and compassionate fosterers to join our team, and are appealing for anyone who has a space in their house for one or a pair of cats until a suitable home can be found. We are looking for people with no pets of their own - maybe you would love a cat of your own but don’t want the expense, or perhaps have to go away sometimes so having your own cat wouldn’t be practical? Or maybe you just like the idea of helping a cat.
RSPCA Stort Valley Branch Registered Charity No. 233908
would like more information about fostering cats that are waiting to go to a permanent home. We will be happy to visit you and have a chat to explain in more detail and don’t worry, an enquiry does not mean you have committed yourself. For further information about us please see our website at www.rspcastortvalley.org.uk
We will provide the food, litter and any out of pocket expenses and all equipment needed is supplied by us. What you will provide is your time and plenty of love. It is essential that you are home at least part of every day and you would need to live in the Harlow, Bishops Stortford or close surrounding areas so that it would be practical to bring the cats to our vet clinic in The Stow, Harlow when necessary. Your own transport would also be essential. This job can be demanding, tiring, at times emotional and should not be taken on by the faint hearted, it can also be extremely rewarding. Please phone our clinic or email us at with a contact number we can call you on if you

The Henry Moore Primary School Harlow week Children at The Henry Moore Primary School have enjoyed studying their local area by taking part in Harlow Week. Each year group took a different aspect of Harlow’s culture and history, and carried out an in depth study with their class. This ranged from studying a vast number of sculptures, to learning all about the history behind past and present sporting venues in our town. Throughout the school, teachers used a variety of curriculum subjects to make the learning fun and lively. Children learned all about Sir Frederick Gibberd, the man who planned the town and why it was necessary to build it. In year 5, children were inspired by Henry Moore’s sculpture work that they visited during the week. Later on they had a go at designing their own using his style and clay. Year 2 children even visited The Gibberd Garden to learn more about Fredrick Gibberd and the amazing contributions he has made to our town and see the beautiful sculptures there.

apple day 2015 Keswick Codling apples developing on a 10 year old tree
rivers heritage site and orchard (RHSo)
The Rivers nursery was founded by John Rivers in 1725 and, when it closed in 1987, it was the oldest garden nursery in the UK. Many fruit cultivars and horticultural techniques were developed on the site in Sawbridgeworth, especially by Thomas Rivers (1798-1877) and Thomas Francis Rivers (1830-1899). The history of the site was documented by Elizabeth Waugh in the 2009 book Rivers Nursery of Sawbridgeworth based on the archives of the group and interviews with local people. Formed in May 2014, Rivers Heritage Site and Orchard (RHSO) is a volunteer group who work to protect, preserve and maintain the remaining Rivers Nursery site in Sawbridgeworth, UK and also to maintain the historical information about the Rivers Nursery in the group’s archives. With close links to Sawbridgeworth Town Council we seek to continue the excellent work of previous volunteers on the current Rivers site. The former nursery site is private land but RHSO is allowed access to maintain the orchard by permission of the landowner. The site can be accessed through a number of public or permissive footpaths from Sawbridgeworth or High Wych. It is currently used by many local people for walking and peaceful enjoyment! Apple Day 2015 is RHSO’s main community event held in the Rivers Orchard. We invite anyone from the local community and beyond to
join us to help pick our apple crop. In exchange, pickers may taste our many apple varieties and take some home for themselves. Those who do not wish to pick may purchase apples in the orchard on the day. The day promises to be a festival and fun for the whole family. We hope to expand on the success from last year where over 300 people, including many young children enjoyed a day of fruit picking in our beautiful location. Feel free to bring a picnic to eat in our beautiful environment. In addition to picking apples, there will be: • Mint Cafe’s Ice Cream stall • Light refreshments (tea, coffee, cake) • Apple pressing demonstrations • Live music • History displays of the Rivers Nursery • Fruit identification • Apple tasting • Children’s activities
The team from fruitID will be in attendance throughout the day. You are invited to bring any apples or pears from your own trees to be identified. Identification can require several fruits at varying stages of ripeness. Please follow the guidelines when selecting your fruit and complete the fruitID form (found on our website - www.rhso.co.uk/identify.php).
