WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The Christmas edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

I’m humming Christmas carols as I write this month’s letter, not so strange except I’m writing it in the middle of November! For the past 2 weeks my poor daughter has been woken by my singing carols... I guess you could say I’m a tad excited but then I think, as you get older the excitement is all in the preparation and anticipation...

december 2015 ISSUE 123

Thank you to our fabulous local ministers who took the time out of their busy schedules to answer, what has now become, our “traditional” Christmas question. This year they were asked what about their favourite memory... A simple enough question but I fear at lot harder than expected to answer. Why not have a try yourself; what’s your favourite memory of Christmas? Mine? I have so many... running into my brothers’ room screaming, “he’s been!!” Helping Mum put all the sweets out, being allowed to have fizzy drinks - yep, Christmas was the only time of the year that we had them in our house and we had crates and crates of them from the Unigate milkman! The warmth (winters were colder then plus we’d only just got central heating!) the smell of dinner cooking - this was the only time of year we ever had three courses (well, not including Boxing day, when we did it all again!), the telly playing in the background... I could go on and on... the overriding feeling was of the warmth and security - family. I hope your Christmas reminiscing’s bring a twinkle to your eye and if not, perhaps you could make THIS Christmas the one that has the best memories... Wishing one and all a very merry Christmas!

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Resident, I want to start by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Weekend GP Services in Harlow I’ve been working hard to ensure that the NHS in Harlow gets the support and investment that it needs from government. That is why the Weekend GP appointments have started in Harlow, with a grant from the Prime Minister worth £2.6million.

Thank you Harlow Royal British Legion for a very special Remembrance Service on Remembrance Sunday, at the Netteswell Memorial in the town park. It was wonderful to see so many people there. A special mention to the Harlow Brass Brand for everything they did on the day including playing The Last Post.

The Weekend GP Service has been set up to provide additional routine GP and nurse appointments on Saturdays and Sundays. It allows patients to

We Must Pray For Paris We have all been horrified by the tragic events that occurred last month in Paris. In response to the attacks, the French President has declared that his country is committed to ‘destroying’ IS and announced that France is now ‘at war’. Britain will stand with France.

see a GP, healthcare assistant or nurse for routine GP appointments, health checks and treatments. Appointments are accessed through a patient’s own participating GP surgery and will be provided through a number of local health centres. This service is for routine, booked appointments only and is not a walk-in service. This is really good news for Harlow residents. Having a seven-day NHS will reduce pressures on emergency services and A&E departments, like at Princess Alexandra Hospital, so that the services they provide can continue to improve. I just want to thank all of the staff who have launched this service and it is great that patients and staff have provided positive feedback.

But we must also make our first priority the safety of people in our country. The Chancellor has announced that the threat of a cyber-attack by terrorists has never been greater, and that we will be doubling our investment into cyber security to £1.9bn. The Home Secretary Theresa May has assured us all that border security will be ‘intensified’. David Cameron plans to increase funding for the SAS and special units by £2 billion by 2020 and extra funding has also been announced for an extra 1,900 security and intelligence officers at MI5, MI6 and GCHQ. Terrorists want us to be afraid, but the best thing that we can all do is to carry on with our lives and cherish the freedoms that they want to destroy. I said before that terrorists only have to be lucky once. We have to be lucky always.

In 2013 Harlow Business award finalist, Faye Brownjohn started Pole Train Fitness. On the 1st anniversary of opening her own studio, she opens the doors into the world of Pole Training... How did you decide on your company name? My Husband suggested the name Pole Train Fitness. With the stigma attached to the pole industry, I wanted the name to be clear that it was fitness orientated. Where did you qualify/study? I studied Leisure at college and became a Personal Trainer with the YMCA back in 1998. Since then I have extended my knowledge with industry recognised qualifications and ensure they are kept current and relevant. Experience in the business? I’ve been a fan of fitness for as long as I can remember and chose a career in the Leisure Industry from school. However, at the age of 21 I decided on a change of career, moving to an office based job, which I did for 10 years. I was never happy with a sedentary role, so Pole Train Fitness has been an opportunity to take me back to doing something I love. What made you decide to set up your own business? Once my children had reached school age I decided it was time to do something for myself. I took up pole fitness as a hobby whilst working in my full time job. This made me realise how much I loved the fitness industry and helped me to make my decision to return to the teaching circuit. What hurdles have you faced? Unfortunately pole fitness has a certain stigma attached and its not truly appreciated for its physical and mental benefits. Despite its growth in popularity as a form of fitness, it’s hard to change people’s perceptions but I feel as an industry, pole fitness is slowly winning this battle – it’s an addictive sport! Tel:

What has been the most rewarding of owning your own business? Earlier this year Pole Train Fitness was selected as a finalist for the Business Growth Award in the Harlow Business & Community Awards 2015. Preparing for this presentation gave me an opportunity to look back at my journey over the past 2 years. I’m so proud of what I have achieved, not only from the business perspective, but also the friends I have made, the Pole Train community we have created, and the positive impact my business has had on people’s lives. I never tire of seeing my students reach their fitness goals, achieve a new pole move, or regain confidence they had lost – the power of pole fitness is priceless! Anything you would like to add? There are many different aspects to pole fitnesss training, from strength gains, toning and weight loss, core conditioning, flexibility and self confidence. There really is something for everyone regardless of age or fitness level. Why not come down and see for yourself. Quote CM17 and get your first class FREE!

sea fishing in HARlow Titelines sea angling club By Mr Jim Richardson

This may seem unlikely as the North Sea is over 30 miles away but Harlow does have its very own thriving sea fishing club. Based at the Great Parndon Community centre, Harlow Titelines Sea Angling Club has been in existence for over 25 years.

Fishing is from charter boats and venues include ports such as Bradwell on the east coast as well as Dover, Shoreham and Portsmouth on the south coast. At least two fishing trips are booked each month with cod, skate, plaice, bass, conger eel and many other species being caught. Anglers can choose to fish for pleasure or the pot and can also take part in a year long competition to see who has caught the heaviest fish of various species. With conservation in mind many fish are safely returned to preserve fish stocks and strict size limits are observed. Occasionally longer outings are arranged and we have travelled to Ireland, Guernsey, Torquay and Minehead, as each area of the sea around our coast has its own ecosystem containing different species of fish. In some years even longer trips abroad are planned and in 2016 the club will again be in Norway, fishing waters that are well inside the Artic circle hoping to land giant cod and halibut. If you are interested in joining Harlow Titelines, whether you are experienced or a novice angler, please give me a ring for more information.

we asked some of our local ministers…

Dave Welch

Harlow Baptis

I know I am the oldest minister responding to this question but I can honestly say that I wasn’t there on the first Christmas. But what an occasion that would have been, whatever the actual date. Joseph and Mary, the innkeeper, the shepherds and the angels would certainly have had a memorable time. By the time the Magi arrived with their memorable gifts the family were in a house. I recall one Christmas Day at my in-laws with our daughters aged 4 and 2, sharing presents and having a wonderful time. On Boxing Day, Diane’s mum told us that she had forgotten to give the girls some presents. She decided to hang these in a couple of shopping bags on a cedar tree. Grandma told the girls that Santa forgot to drop off some presents on Christmas Eve but said he would come back on Christmas night. I will never forget their faces when they discovered these bags with colouring books and crayons. They were so excited and it resulted in Diane and me continuing this ritual for many years. In many respects it reminds me that we can enjoy the real meaning of Christmas way beyond the actual day. I am sure that this Christmas will have its own special memories too. Wishing you all a blessed Christmas and 2016!

14

Christmas is such a busy time and involves so much, my earliest memory and probably the most exciting was coming down one morning and finding all over the ceiling some amazing red, gold and green shiny decorations hanging from the ceiling, handmade, I didn’t care - they could have been the star over Bethlehem as far as I was concerned, I remember being absolutely transfixed by them - the decorations were kept for years and years and became a bit of a family joke over time, well, when your 45 they don’t quite have the same effect do they! I remember all I wanted one year for Christmas was a jumper for my bear to wear - he got it and I was so excited that Santa could knit and knew his size! Why on earth am I telling you these things I really don’t know – no-one would be so excited by these things today I doubt – Christmas magical then – star struck and I had the best dressed bear in town! Today it is still as special for different reasons and my hope and prayer is that as you celebrate this year, new memories will be made that will stay with you and you may find yourselves celebrating with one of the church communities and we will make new memories together. For those of you celebrating with us at Potter Street, I may have bought a new hat - last years jumper, just so you’re not disappointed!

Christmas is a wonderful time of celebration for Christians; the drawback with being a minister is that you tend to end up a little Christmassed-out by December 25th! It’s not a bad problem to have....though in my case, my favourite Christmas memories tend to be those of a few years ago. We used to enjoy some wonderful carol services at the church Nicky (my wife) and I attended in London, and where we sang in the choir. The traditional nine Bible lessons, so familiar from the famous broadcast service from King’s College Cambridge, set out the “true meaning of Christmas” in a way that no preacher ever can, and some of the music we sang was just wonderful. And for a few years we travelled up to my inlaws in North Suffolk immediately after the Christmas morning service-a long drive made enjoyable by the prospect of a loving family and a big dinner! But a memory that really sticks in the mind is a Christmas Eve about 20 years ago-catching the train to my office in London in a cold, thick fog. The office was always relaxed on December 24th, and the fog lent an air of expectant, excited mystery for what was to follow. Happy times!

My earliest and most magical Christmas memory is of being led, eyes closed into the lounge to see the Christmas tree lit up and decorated with sparkling baubles. Mum and Dad always decorated the tree on Christmas Eve after we went to bed. I remember with amazing clarity the wonder of that dazzling tree that seemed to wrap itself around me and transform the room and made me feel so special. I was pretty young and obviously that magical moment could never be recreated although I tried to for our children. These days there are so many Christmas lights and decorations in the shops and we love looking at them, sometimes whole floors are set aside to display, they are beautiful and fascinating. Sometimes the glitter and glow of Christmas loses its attraction especially as it seems to start so early; the superficial decorations can never transform the dark reality or bring an enduring Christmas spirit. I am so glad that I found the true spirit of Christmas that never fades or loses its magical attraction. Jesus is the true light of the world that shines into any darkness we face, and the darkness can never put it out. I have found that he continually amazes me with his enduring love. No matter what is going on in my life he wraps me in the warmth of his love, transforms my perceptions and always makes me feel special.

POLICING OUR Harlow North PCSO Chrisie Goodman

Already the rush has started with Christmas shopping and dates on the calendar for Christmas concerts, carols and festivities of all kinds. Unfortunately at this time of the year when our minds are set on organising so many events and forthcoming arrangements we sometimes forget the most basic of security measures in our homes and vehicles. Whether we live alone or with a partner, friends or family, keeping safe is something we all need to think about but sometimes take for granted.

as it’s a bit of a giveaway that you are out for the evening if the lights are left on all night. Imagine coming home on Christmas Eve and finding all the presents that you spent all those hours trooping around the shops for are now sitting around the bottom of a burglars Christmas tree!! All shopping should be safely stored in the boot of your car out of sight and not on the front/back seats which is an open invitation for someone to break in to your vehicle.

Inside your home Try and look at your home through the eyes of a burglar. What can you see that would encourage or discourage someone from breaking in? Remember half of all burglaries happen on the spur of the moment through unlocked doors or windows. Safety lights that are triggered by movement can be useful burglar deterrents. Try not to leave your keys in a place where they can be seen from outside your home. Avoid attaching your name and address to keys. If they were lost or stolen, they could make a burglar’s job very easy. Christmas trees are very nice all lit up and in front of the window but please, please keep your presents out of sight of the window and put the tree lights on a timer switch

Callers at the door Intercom systems, spy holes, door chains and outside lighting can all help to safely identify callers. If you have them, make sure you use them. If a caller claims to be representing a company or organisation, ask for ID. If you are uncertain about the ID, phone the organisation to check the caller is genuine. Use the telephone number given in the phone book or on your utility bill rather than the one on the identity card. Sometimes a bogus caller will try and distract you whilst an accomplice robs you, often by entering through the back door. Try and make sure other entrances into your home are locked when you answer the front door. IF IN DOUBT KEEP THEM OUT!

LOCAL COMMUNITY Church Langley PCSO Phyllis Chipchase

By now I am sure that the vast majority of you will have heard about the cuts to your local Neighbourhood Policing Teams. In early October Essex Police announced that 55m savings needed to be made by 2020 therefore by March 31st 2016 PCSO numbers in Essex would be reduced from 250 to 60 with Harlow retaining just 4 PCSO roles from it’s current 14. The New PCSO job description has been amended and I now do not fit the new criteria. This has nothing to do with my capability to do the role, which I have done for the last 7 years. We are informed that there may be possible redeployment to limited vacancies within Essex Police. Over the many years I have been your PCSO I have prided myself on being approachable, carrying out my duties in a professional and unbiased manner. I have served the community to the best of my ability whether that be on high visibility patrols or providing reassurance and advice to residents or victims of crime. I’ve undertaken school visits for safety talks

including cycle training for pupils, visits to vulnerable/lonely residents, and dealt with various incidents including road collisions, disorder and anti-social behaviour. Over the last 18 months, mainly due to dwindling PCSO numbers, I have been unable to spend as much time as I would have liked, and certainly used to, on Church Langley. This has been because we are often tasked with dealing with incidents across the whole of Harlow. Along with Chrisie and Rebecca, I will continue to write my column for as long as I am your PCSO. These articles, more often than not, are written and sent from home during our rest days. Thank you all for making my time on Church Langley so special and for making me so welcome. I hope that I have made a difference, even if it’s just a small one. Surgeries TBC Tel

Venture Into Volunteering The Gibberd Gallery based in Harlow Civic Centre need volunteers to help with the smooth running of the project. Volunteers would ideally help out for a half day once or twice a week and the role would included meeting and greeting visitors, preparing mailouts, taking phone messages etc. Do you enjoy the open air and green spaces around the town? Several conservation projects are looking for extra help to maintain the natural environment for us all to enjoy. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of tasks including tidying pathways, clearing streams, scrub clearance and bridge building No special skills are needed, and this is a great way to get fit while making a difference. Action for Family Carers organises a youth club for young carers age from 8 to 16 years old and would welcome extra volunteers to assist the Support Workers. Volunteers could help with IT/ homework activities, get involved with arts and crafts activities and help with the general running of this valuable service. The local branch of the RSPCA would like to hear from volunteers with a half day or two each week to join their clinic/shop to help out with sorting and maintaining the shops donated stock, keeping the area attractive and tidy, meeting and greeting visitors and general admin tasks as needed. If you would like to find out more about these opportunities or any others that may interest you, please contact Della Nash, contact details below. Harlow Chorus

Handel’s Messiah at Chelmsford Cathedral, Saturday 12th December Words by Mick Rumens

Our concert, on The 7th November at St John’s, Epping, was a particularly memorable event well received by our audience. Our soloists for this concert were Helen Ludford-Thomas, soprano, and Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks, tenor who were both exceptional and received a great round of applause from the audience and the chorus members. We were delighted to have Paul Ayres accompany us in this concert, and his new choral arrangement of Bless this house was received with rapturous applause for it’s world premiere. For our performance of Handel’s Messiah at Chelmsford Cathedral on the 12th December at 7.00pm, we have the Baroque ensemble, Charivari Agreable providing accompaniment, and our soloists will be Christine Buras, soprano, Flora McIntosh, alto, William Blake, tenor, and Keel Watson, bass. Our regular accompanist, Susan Graham Smith will also be supporting us on the organ. This will be a major work for us in our very important 40th season, and we hope to have as many of our supporters as possible

attend on this wonderful early Christmas occasion. We will be joined by many past members of the chorus in celebration of this special Christmas event. Less than two weeks after this event we will all be enjoying Christmas celebrations with our families and, on behalf of the Chorus members and all associated with Harlow Chorus I would like to extend our very best wishes to Lorraine and her staff who work so hard producing CM17 Connection every month. Through this medium we would also like to wish all CM17 readers, their families and our loyal supporters, a happy, healthy and peaceful Christmas, and New Year 2016. Our 40th anniversary season will continue in 2016 with our principal celebratory concert in Chelmsford Cathedral on Saturday 16th April, which will include the world premiere of a new work especially commissioned by the Chorus, Cecilia McDowall’s “A time for all seasons”. More news of this, and other events, next time.

The Henry Moore Primary School ‘Back to The Future’ Day

Year 6 watched excerpts from Back to the Future with the predictions of what life would be like on 21st October 2015! The rain was an absolutely correct prediction!!! The children then wrote their predictions for the future as below. WHAT WILL THE FUTURE WILL BE LIKE? I think that in 2045, gaming consoles will not be used. Instead, there will probably be virtual reality machines where you put on a helmet, gloves and boots to control a character in a virtual world. I also predict that the showers will have over 50 settings, from hot and bubbly to cold and strawberry scented. You will order it what to do by saying it into a speaker. I think that cars will drive automatically. You will type in your destination and it will drive you there, abiding by the law, and it will take the quickest most efficient route. Finally, I believe that schools will be abolished and instead, you will have yearly injections that feed you with knowledge. Physical exercise and sport will be highly encouraged. Once you are 18, you can choose what injections you have to teach you about the career of your choice. Liam Hirst-Year 6 WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE 30 YEARS FROM NOW? In 30 years from now, when you do your shopping, you will have a fully charged, working robot to do all of your shopping for you (that means you won’t have to walk around and get it all!) Also, in the future, when you’ve broken down and need fuel, you won’t have to try and push your car to a garage or call the AA because you’ll have a button on the wheel that calls a company to send fuel to the car by itself. In the future, when you go to school, the teachers will have a little controller with a button for each of the children. If they keep talking or not paying attention, the teachers can press the button and whoever it is will listen instantly. The children will have their own ipad to research what they need and to ask a question. In 2045, you won’t have to do your hair every single day because you will have a hat! When you put that hat on, all you need to do is say what style you want and it will have the style there when you take the hat off. Niomie Mellon-Year 6

Trading Standards

Happy Shopping during Christmas & New Year Trading Standards advice for happy shopping leading up to the holiday period is to just remember CHRISTMAS.

C is for Counterfeits - don’t buy them! They can be dangerous, are poor quality and the person you are buying for will be disappointed

H is for Hallmark - a mark to look for on Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium articles to prove the quality of the metal. If there is no hallmark, the item may not be made of the precious metal you wanted.

R is for Receipts - keep them. If you find out that the items you have purchased are faulty you will need proof of purchase when you go back to the shop.

I is for Increasing your protection - when you buy expensive goods. If you buy goods over £100 it can be useful to use your credit card – that way if the company goes bust or the trader won’t help you with a problem you can go to your credit card company for help. S is for Safe goods - look for the CE Mark on things like toys and electrical goods – this is the symbol used to show the goods have met the required safety standards.

T is for time to change your mind - you now have 14 days to change your mind about many goods

you buy on-line, so order in good time and you will still have the chance to send them back and order something else if you don’t like what you receive.

M is for manufacturer’s warranty - some goods come with a manufacturer’s warranty which you can use if the goods become faulty so keep hold of them. Remember though that your contract is with the shop where the goods were purchased so you can still go back to the seller even if you do have a warranty. A is for advice - if you need pre-shopping advice (or help after Christmas) call Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 040506. S is for scams - Christmas is an expensive time of year and a letter telling you that you have won a lottery may seem like a gift. Just remember, if you have not bought a ticket how can you be a winner? As with all scams, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!

Will you help make the festive season a special one for Harlow Christmas Haven (The Chocolate Run)? For around 20 years we have provided a shelter for the homeless at Christmas, for 10 days from 23rd December to 1st January. We provide simple accommodation, food, clothing and toiletries. We also aim to provide a warm and friendly welcome. The number of guests varies, but we will probably have 20 to 25 people staying overnight with us this Christmas. This year we are staying open until 3 January, to cover the weekend. If you are interested in helping please email: contact@chocolaterun.org.uk or call our chair Jo Busson, on 07951 612803. Our volunteers do as many, or as few, shifts as they want. We need volunteers to cover 24/7. We will run 5 shifts a day, an 8 hour night shift from midnight to 8am, then 4 hour shifts for the rest of the day!
