CM17
welcome HELLO AND WELCOME TO The new year edition of the cm17 connection I hope you had a smashing Christmas and are all ready for the year ahead. I am excited about new possibilities and full of optimism that this year will be the year that I drop a dress size (or two!), finally overcome my fear of exercise, start that new project that I’ve been putting off for the past two years, become the perfect wife, mother, friend and... Hold on, hold on! Who am I trying to kid! I think this year I’m going to keep it simple and resolve to be kinder - to myself and others. Job done. There, feeling positive and in control already! Talking of control, I have invested in a diary, a business planner AND a life planner. You’d think at my age that I’d have figured it all out by now but no. So, this year, will be the year that I get organised and set goals and targets and use different coloured pens for different tasks and everything... I feel like I’ve just stocked up on stationery ready to start back at school. It feels good. I’ll keep you posted. We have some really interesting articles for you this month from fledgling new businesses - meet Claire Aspell from Virtual CA on page 11 to updates from our old favourites, Harlow Chorus (page 20) and some new ones - Old Harlow Traders (page 12) and CL Voices (page 16). Plus an article on a dream of mine, pottery - I’ve always longed for my own kiln and maybe to have a little pottery shop somewhere... I blame my junior school teacher, Mrs Jassal. For some unknown reason, she allowed me and Julie Blake to be Kiln monitors at Latton Green Primary School... oh, the stories I could tell but such fond memories!

Working Hard For Harlow Dear Resident, I’d like to begin by wishing everyone in Harlow a very Happy New Year. Good News for Families I have been urging the Government to support hard working families in Harlow and provide much needed assistance for pensioners. For this reason I am pleased that George Osborne has announced that the state pension will rise by £3.35 to £119.30 per week, which is the biggest real terms rise in the basic state pension in 15 years. The Chancellor has also confirmed that there will be tax-free childcare for working parents. From early 2017, the Government will contribute 20% of childcare costs through an online childcare account. The amount contributed by the Government will be up to £10,000, and includes a total £2000 per child per year and £4000 per child per year for disabled children. This is on top of the commitment to give working parents of 3 and 4 year olds 30 hours of free childcare a week, which will start this year. Robert meeting a childminders group in Harlow
Help Is On the Way for First Time Home Buyers in Harlow If you are saving to buy your first home, the Government is now offering a monthly bonus to boost your savings by 25%. So, for every £200 you save, you will receive a Government bonus of £50. The Help to Buy: ISA will be available from a range of banks and building societies, and when you are in the process of buying your first home, your solicitor or conveyancer will apply for your Government bonus. The Government is also committed to social housing and has cut rent for social housing tenants by 1%. World Class Health Facility to be built in Harlow Last year the Chancellor announced that Public Health England would be moving to Harlow, bringing thousands of jobs and investment to our town. This good news is now even better, as the Chancellor has announced that Harlow will now receive up to half a billion pounds of investment, making Harlow an even larger hub for science and innovation. This is incredible news for Harlow as it will ensure that our town the scientific centre of not just East England, but of the world. It has taken 5 years of hard work to get this commitment and I am glad that the Government is making Harlow a priority.

local business people in person Name and Business: Janice Constantinou, the owner/manager of First Class care Agency. Where do you live? I live in Harlow. What’s your favourite local venue? I like the Potter Arms in Church Langley. What’s your favourite local shop? My favourite local shop is River Island. What do you like best about Harlow? I like the people and the great choice of food places to eat out. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I like to go shopping, eat out with friends and family and enjoy days out with the kids.
Happy New Year!
I set up my business because… It made sense. With the care industry failing so many people with regards to their care and what they were entitled to, I felt residents’ in Harlow would benefit from a private care agency that could do exactly what the client wanted as well as what they needed. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? My 3rd grandchild was born this year - the first boy of the grandchildren. Favourite one liner or saying? ‘Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.’

Just 6 months in and claire aspell’s fledgling business, virtual CA is set to soar in 2016. could she be the answer to your businesses administrative needs...
Tell us about Virtual CA? Virtual CA offers business support, advise and administration services. The aim is to offer a flexible and professional service to businesses who require these expertise without the expense and time of an employee. How did you decide on your company name? Virtual – as that is the whole basis, and CA are my initials, plus it rhymes with PA! What work did you do before setting up the business? I started my career with an IT reseller in Enfield. To be honest my first 12-18months was nothing spectacular, I hit or exceeded target, but it wasn’t easy. Until I worked out that I needed to focus more on my customers needs than my sales figures. Once you truly understand what your customer wants, the sale becomes easy as you are providing a solution that is meeting their needs. Suddenly sales wasn’t where I wanted to be anymore; I wanted to run the division within the company that provided that customer service, that post sale support, making it easier for the 20 strong sales team to do their job and ultimately make the company more profitable - it worked! The company appeared in the Sunday Times Tech Track 100, 3 times during my employment and twice since I left! I got my ‘get out of jail free card’ after 7years leaving a team consisting of 17 staff members that I personally met with individually every week - I was responsible for Customer Service, Sales Support, Order Processing and the Warehouse. I took a step into Office and Project Management

when I joined a print and events company to be closer to home in Harlow. I introduced my new MD to a growth focused retail marketing company which resulted in me project managing them for around 12months earning in excess of £300K, the 5th largest client on the books in terms of revenue and growth rate. What made you decide to set up your own business? I have learnt a lot through my career, both positive and negative and I wanted to take all of that experience to help other businesses! There were a lot of areas of opportunity which I could not pursue during full time employment, and I had to make a decision, go hell for leather at it or not. Do you hope to expand your business? I am looking to recruit early next year a part time member of staff who can assist me with some of the day to day administrative tasks Virtual CA undertake on behalf of our clients, allowing me to pursue Project Management and our new SMS Marketing Venture. What do you like most about being selfemployed? I am in control, I know how hard I can push myself, when I should push myself, and when to wait – plus I love working at home with my lovely Labrador Twickers. Any funny stories from your working life that you’d like to share with us? Over the years I have had some strange conversations with clients, and met some interesting candidates during employment interviews however the most memorable moment was meeting a guy who is now my fiancé!

Old Harlow trader’s Christmas Lights: An update and thank you!
The quiz night at Harlow Cricket Club on the 20th of November was another great success raising around £1350 towards the Christmas street lights, great effort and many thanks again to Paul from Belvoir for putting forward time at his villa in Florida as an auction item. For those who may not have noticed the street lights turned on for the first time, as planned on the 26th November, amid crowds in the High Street the likes of which haven’t been seen for many years, community support for the event was amazing! Two bands were joined by carollers, suitably dressed in Victorian attire, from the Baptist Church. Santa also made an appearance! Thanks to Eamon from the Green Man and the girls from the Cutting Edge who raised around £300 in the grotto. Thanks also to the Traders that came out to fill the high street with the wonderful smells of curry, pasta and mulled wine. The lights were switched on by Robert Halfon MP aided by ‘Elsa ‘ from frozen, Robert also donated 200 mince pies that were given out to the crowd. Also joining us were the cast of Rapunzel from Victoria Theatre, in full costume. And a special mention to members from High Voltage Big Band and the Salvation Army Band who came along to support and played carols off the cuff without rehearsal! The curry night hosted by Bengal Cottage was the last fundraising event of 2015 and was a great success. The New Year will see another event hosted at Bruno’s Trattoria and in the spring the full team from High Voltage Big Band will be appearing at the Old Harlow Baptist Church, keep an eye out for these events and more to follow. The New Year promises to be filled with exciting

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP next may harlow residents’ will be voting for their local councillors
I’m Eugenie Harvey and I’m honoured to have been selected to stand for Labour in Old Harlow. For the last 10 years I’ve enjoyed being part of a great community in Churchgate Street. Our son was born at Princess Alexandra and our children attended nursery, primary and now secondary school in Harlow. I became interested in local issues through our Residents’ Association where I’ve enjoyed helping to organise the annual community Christmas Party, Churchgate in Bloom, and our wonderful Jubilee celebration back in 2012. These have strengthened our community – and they’ve also been a lot of fun! This year I decided it was time to put my head above the parapet and stand up for what I believe in – a fair, inclusive society in which everyone has the chance to improve their lot. I think we need someone who represents Old Harlow in our Labour-led Council: making sure things get done for our community. The future of Princess Alexandra Hospital will be at the very top of my list. A unique set of circumstances in Harlow puts our hospital under enormous pressure. Central government must provide greater support and that case needs to be made. Closer to home, along with other Labour Councillors I’ll be opposing the proposed 7a
junction off the M11 if it is to come through Harlow and along Gilden Way. Such a junction will only add to congestion. What Harlow needs is a bypass... urgently. I’ll also have my eye on road maintenance, improving the appearance of our landscaped areas and of course, the regeneration of Harlow town centre. These irritants detract from the pride we all want to feel in the place we live. I’m grateful to Labour Councillors past and present for their support with my campaign. Readers of CM17 Magazine are currently represented by Emma Toal (Harlow Common), Deputy Leader of the Council and Mike Danvers who represents Netteswell on Harlow Council plus Harlow North on Essex County Council. You can contact Mike on 01279 425934 or find him at 65 Tunnmeade Harlow CM20 3HN or on Facebook. And the remarkable Jake Shepherd is standing in Church Langley - watch this space for more on Jake! With very best wishes for the New Year, Eugenie

community choir ‘CL Voices’ inaugural concert and plans for the New Year 2016 “No Time for Christmas!” It might be what many were thinking during the Advent season, what with all the preparations that seem to be needed these days. However, it was also the title for Church Langley Voices inaugural concert, held at the Church and Community Association building on 28th November. Under the guidance of its two musical directors, Mary Norkett and Lis Scott, over 40 singers of a wide ability range presented a half hour informal evening programme of light Christmas-flavour music to an invited audience of around 100 relatives, friends and supporters. The musical styles varied from a thoughtful quartet to fullblown rock’n’roll with the audience joining in the dance! The items were linked with a narrative involving two sisters and an off-duty angel on a tube train. Afterwards, the true party atmosphere continued with snacks and mulled wine to share. All in all, a great evening of entertainment and socialising.
The choir had only been rehearsing for just seven weeks, and was something of a venture of faith. After an ad in CM17 (thanks, Lorraine!) and one in Tesco (who we thank for offering support) we really didn’t know how many to expect. Our guess of 20, maybe 30, turned out to be well short of the mark: over 50 people came to the first rehearsal, all very, very enthusiastic about the project. Indeed, their enthusiasm has made the whole venture an enormous pleasure. Dates for next year are already arranged. Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays, starting Feb. 23rd: time and venue to be confirmed, but likely to be in the Henry Moore Primary School. These will culminate in another concert, on Sat. May 7th 2016 at 7.30pm in the Community Association hall. More information will be available on the website, clvoices.org.uk.

New Year has the great pottery throwdown fired you up? By Kate McLelland
The BBC’s Great Pottery Throwdown finished in December after its first series of six programmes. Made by the team that produced The Great British Bake Off, it aimed to find Britain’s hottest pottery stars and, like Bake Off, it has helped the British public to understand more about the creation of artisan products, whether that’s a sourdough loaf or a set of stackable breakfast bowls. Learning about the intricacies of pottery making has been a revelation to viewers who had previously not given much thought to the process, and since the series ended many have been eager to try it for themselves. So if you’re thinking of joining a pottery class, what are the basic things that you should know before you start? It’s messy! Think of two toddlers playing in a muddy field and multiply that image by ten to understand how you’ll look after your first go on the potter’s wheel. The essential ingredients when making pottery are clay and water – combine that with a wheel that spins your wet clay object around, and you get the picture. Be prepared to wear old clothes and shoes, cut your nails, tie back your hair and bring an apron that covers from the chest down! It’s not all about the wheel There are two very different ways of making objects out of clay. Hand building, as the term suggests, doesn’t require a potter’s wheel: you will either make long, thin rolls of clay and build them up into a single shape (known as a pinch pot) or roll the clay out into slabs and join the pieces together with liquid clay to create a
24
square or rectangular shape (slab pot). The expression ‘throwing’ comes from the way the clay is thrown onto the centre of a flat, spinning tray (the potter’s wheel) and squeezed into shape as it revolves at speed. You’ll need quite a lot of strength in your hands to do this, as well as patience. Inevitably the first few times you try, the clay will either slide off the wheel or you’ll make a perfect, cylindrical shape only to see it twist and warp at the very last minute. It’s slow If you’re one of those people who likes to see instant results, pottery making may not be right for you, as the production of finished objects takes time. When a piece is first made the clay is loaded with water and must be thoroughly and evenly dried out before it can be fired. That’s a minimum of a week for freshly made (or ‘green’) objects. It’s a science as well as a craft Making the initial clay shape is just part of a process that ends with a hard material that in some cases is almost as durable as stone. A pottery oven (kiln) is not the same as a domestic oven and an apprentice potter will need to learn how clay and glazes react when heated to high temperatures. The process of heating clay and glazes to reach their optimal point of melting is usually achieved over two steps. Bisque firing is the first stage, where unglazed pots are heated just enough for them to be able to take the glaze that will give them their final, glossy finish.

New Hobby? Once glazes have been applied the pots go back into the kiln for the glaze firing. At this stage pots must be kept completely apart or the glazes will melt on to each other and bond the pots together. It neeDs sPace anD InVestment You may be happy to continue working with others as you learn your craft at a local pottery class, but eventually you might decide to go it alone. If so, you will need to find additional space for your hobby. A large shed or a garage with electrics connected would be ideal, provided there is adequate room for the wheel and the kiln, a surface to paint and glaze your pots and places for them to dry before firing. However the equipment you’ll need can be costly: expect to spend between £600 and £2,000 on a potter’s wheel and £1,000-£4,000 on a kiln, and that’s without all the accessories
and materials you’ll need to make the pots themselves. Taking up pottery making can be hugely satisfying and rewarding but it’s not a hobby you can simply pick up and put down again. It may take several weeks for you to make your first pottery objects and it could take considerably longer before you are proficient enough to create objects you might offer for sale. If you are still keen to have a go, the Hotcourses website (www.hotcourses.com) has a list of over 1,000 courses available in the UK. Once again, the BBC has opened our eyes to a craft that has been largely overlooked in recent years. The Great Pottery Throwdown may not eventually prove as successful as The Great British Bake-Off, but at least it has helped us to understand the skill, passion and commitment required to make a simple pottery object that can be used and enjoyed for years.

Protecting your property - Buying time Burglars do not see every home as a target. He or she looks for vulnerable premises and the tell tale signs that nobody is home. The two biggest concerns any burglar has when deciding whether to break into a house is the time it is likely to take and the risk of detection through the noise of breaking in. Security devices will make it harder for a burglar to break into a property. Look at your home as if you have locked yourself out and work out where you would try to get in. By applying this simple process you are viewing your home in the same way a burglar will. Start by looking at your property from the front. Avoid creating hidden areas where intruders can lurk unseen by making it as clear and open as possible with no obstructed lines of sight from the highway. At least have a clear area above waist level so any intruders will be visible. Consider security lighting for any areas that are in deep shadow at night. Things like gravel can make a loud noise under foot which can be heard at night. Make the garden a difficult area to access with prickly hedging or fencing around the perimeter. You may need permission for fencing over 2m high at the back and 1m high to the front of your property. Check with the council planning office. The most vulnerable part of the house is at the rear. Evidence suggests nearly two thirds of all domestic burglaries take place via the Surgeries TBC Tel

rear or side windows and doors. If burglars can be prevented from reaching these points the chance of attack on the house itself will be reduced. Solid wooden gates offer easy entry for thieves because they are sturdy to climb and tend to be tucked away at the sides of houses. Make these harder to climb by covering the cross members with a panel so there is no obvious foothold. Wrought iron gates may be far more effective deterrent. It is always wise to use at least two locks on a gate if possible. If a burglar cannot go over or through the gate, they may decide to try to take it off completely. This can be prevented by welding metal washers over the hinge pins to prevent them from being lifted off. Letterboxes/plates should be considered as an opening that can be used by the criminal, either to extract goods from within in close proximity to the door such as car keys, or to work vulnerable locking devices from inside. An internal cover plate offers additional security, as does a letter basket, though you might wish to consider removing the bottom, allowing the post to fall to the floor and preventing theft. Other tips to beat the burglar: • Fit 5 lever mortise locks on external doors. • For UPVC doors always lock from shutting the door, lifting the handle. Keep the handle raised to lock the door and by turning the key. • Fit secure locks and take extra care when locking up other doors and windows. • Make your property look occupied at all times – use automatic light timers. • Consider installing an alarm – homes with alarms are rarely burgled. • When leaving the property remove keys and locks out of place out of sight.

I want to thank all who have contacted me regarding my previous article about the proposed cuts to PCSO’s. I am informed that following the recent announcement of no cuts to Policing by George Osborne, Essex Police have deferred their decision on PCSO’s until January I will of course keep you all updated. I hope you have all had a happy restful and peaceful Christmas and Santa brought all those wished for gifts. In the run up to the Christmas party season my colleague PCSO Karen Rogers and I were again invited by Harlow College to give Keeping Safe presentations for all first year students. This is the sixth year these have been given and we covered topics such as the dangers of unlicensed cabs, sensible alcohol consumption, drug abuse/awareness, walking home safely, robbery, knife crime - discussing the dangers and consequences of carrying a weapon. St Edmunds montessori the pre-school drumming its way to success
Nestled in the beautiful village setting of Matching Green sits St Edmunds Montessori Pre-School, owned and run by mother and daughter team Linda and Simone Withers. If the name Withers sounds familiar it may be because Pick Withers, husband and father of the owners, is the founder member and original drummer of rock band Dire Straits. With Linda’s family originating from Wivenhoe, the decision to relocate to Essex and start their business here was an easy one. At St Edmunds you will find everything you would expect from a Montessori nursery, which seamlessly links Montessori methods and the Early Years Foundation Framework. You will also find a hugely creative family who bring their wealth of experience in the field of creative arts to the children lucky enough to attend. Simone is a classically trained singer and musician who trained with Sondheim award winner and revered classical composer Noah Ain in New York City. She appeared in the National Youth Music Theatre/Andrew Lloyd Webber production of Bugsy Malone in the West End, and is a hands on owner who can
30
often be found with the children, joining in with their activities and lessons. Her husband, Daniel is a local musician who teaches a weekly singing class. Linda is a talented actress who teaches drama once a week to the children in a fun filled and energetic lesson, and is a strong believer in using creative skills to enhance a child’s academic and social success. The piece de resistance however, is the input given by Pick himself, known to the children as Mr Pickles. When Pick is not touring he can be found at St Edmunds, and from next year will be holding percussion lessons with the children. There are not many children who can claim to have been taught percussion by one of the best drummers in the world! From January 2016 parents will be able to leave their children in the capable hands of St Edmunds staff full time, as the nursery will be extending its current term time hours to offer a full year round service.

1. Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way. 2. Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste. 3. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.
TIP: For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor!
