THE

CM17

WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The february edition of the cm17 connection I’m continuing my New Year “mission” - well, my two missions! The first is business - I’ve enrolled on several training programmes and have to say I’m really enjoying them! I sound surprised don’t I! Well, I haven’t done anything like this in years and am happy to report that a change is, most definitely, as good as a rest! The second, which to me is by far the most important, is cracking that little nugget of “the work/life” balance. Oh yes! I am happy to report that I am chip, chip, chipping away at it and have already organised time with my loved ones up until April and by the time you read this I will be busily planning the rest of the year. I should just add that this has been helped enormously by having a January birthday and receiving, wait for it: tickets to see Adele (pinch me!), a bread making course - getting to spend the day with a friend elbow deep in dough (oh yes!) and the cherry tickets to see The War of the Worlds - War of the worlds!! (I am beyond excited!) You’ve probably gathered I am a bit new at being organised and a tad excited by it all too - it’s been a revelation! I always thought that planning to see friends and family was well, a bit “organised” I’ve tended to be spontaneous and leave everything to the last minute, often with disastrous results. Not any more. It’s far more exciting having things to look forward to. I highly recommend it. And if YOU or your organisation has plans in the coming year, don’t forget to tell me about them - especially if you’d like me to help spread the word via the magazine. The copy deadline is always 15th of the preceding month, so you may need a little forward planning but I’m happy to help in any way I can.

Until next month,

Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Robert Halfon with Asda at his 2015 Jobs Fair

Dear Resident, Keeping Fuel Bills Down Filing up my car at Church Langley Tesco petrol station, it is good to see prices below £1 a litre. It was not so long ago that motorists were paying £1.40. I continue to campaign for the Government to keep fuel prices low. Fuel duty has been frozen, saving motorists hundreds of pounds a year. If fuel taxes had gone up, petrol and diesel would be at least 17p higher. I am working hard to keep energy bills down, and the Government’s new energy efficiency scheme will save an average of £30 a year from household energy bills. Potter Street Post Office In other news – our Potter Street Post Office is getting a makeover! As well as two screened serving positions and a low level serving counter, customers at the Post Office will now the additional services of Car tax and a selection of on-demand foreign currency. Unfortunately this will mean that the store will be closed for a couple of weeks to allow for the refurbishments. It will be worth it when we have a shiny new Post Office.

Bringing Jobs and Apprenticeships coming back to Harlow More Jobs are coming back to Harlow. The latest statistics show that the number of young Jobseeker Allowance claimants in Harlow has gone down by 29.8% since December 2014. Overall, the number of Jobseeker Allowance claimants in Harlow has gone down by 233 in the last 12 months. Jobs, apprenticeships and businesses are coming back to our town. £3.3 Plan to Improve Mental Health for Young People in Essex I have had many residents contact me about their concerns for mental health services. For this reason I meet regularly with the NHS to talk about health issues that are affecting Harlow residents. This year our local NHS, in partnership with Essex County Council, will be launching ‘Open up, Reach Out’, which is a 5 year plan to help the emotional well being and mental health of children and young people. This will include an additional £3.3 million pounds of investment per year. Across the country, the Government are investing an additional £600 million pounds into Mental Health Services.

Eugenie harvey: standing up for old harlow In last month’s CM17 I introduced myself as Labour’s candidate for Old Harlow in this May’s local elections. I have to say a huge ‘thankyou’ for the many kind messages I received and in particular for your thoughts on what I should press for on behalf of Old Harlow.

Top of your list was Junction 7a off the M11, which as proposed by Essex County Council will lead to a huge increase in traffic through the heart of Old Harlow. The new junction would enter Gilden Way between Sheering and Old Harlow at a point designated for more housing. Most residents don’t want this, fearing increased congestion and the risk to lives. Several mentioned the fatalities on Gilden Way as evidence that this is already a danger spot. With hundreds of new homes to be built and this new junction, it’s difficult to see how the fabric of our community won’t be irreversibly damaged. We need a better solution. Did you realise that the Essex County Council – which ultimately makes this decision – predicts that traffic along Gilden Way will increase by 50-100%? And had you heard that one of the solutions proposed is that residents be encouraged to ditch their cars and walk and ride bikes instead? Great for our health and the environment, but is it realistic? The knock on effect will be a bottleneck on Edinburgh Way at the roundabout by Toys R’

With Mike Danvers outside my local the Queen's Head

Us, creating peak hour chaos at Harlow Town station. I caught up with Mike Danvers (Councillor for Netteswell and County Councillor for Harlow North) to get a better understanding of this and other local issues. He told me that the Conservatives at County seem determined to press ahead regardless of the fact that Harlow Council has urged it to establish a by-pass instead: skirting the town to the north and joining the A414 in Hertfordshire. While the decision is ultimately not in the hands of Harlow Council, clearly it has an important voice. This will be strengthened when evidence of strong feeling amongst residents is brought to bear. As your representative, I would ensure that your objections to the 7a junction are heard loud and clear, something our Conservative councillors will find difficult to do as it would put them into conflict with their colleagues on the County Council. It’s time for a Labour voice to put the case for Old Harlow. I hope you agree! Contact: Mike Danvers 01279 425934 michael.danvers@harlow.gov.uk Contact: Eugenie Harvey Eugenieharvey@yahoo.co.uk

LOCALs that launch having spent his entire career in the building industry, Matthew Collins finally took the plunge to start his own business mjc stone & ceramics.

When did set up your business? MJC Stone was set up about a year ago but I was still working in London then. It’s only been in the last few months that I have taken the plunge and gone on my own! How did you decide on your company name? Pretty simple really M J & C are my initials. What’s your experience in the business? I started fixing stone, marble, granite & ceramic 16 years ago, mainly working in affluent areas of London & Surrey. I also fit laminate flooring. What work did you do before setting up the business? I have always worked in the building industry ever since I left school. The trades I have previously worked in include kitchen fitting, roofing and fencing. What made you decide to set up your own business? I set up my business to give me the flexibility to work around the needs of my family. My wife is a Personal Trainer which means that she is often working with her clients first thing in the morning or early evenings. Being my own boss means that I can be there more for our son and also the 5am alarm calls were starting to take their toll!

What has been the most valuable lesson learnt so far? It’s cliché really but I have realsied I should have done this years ago. To suddenly be faced with no guaranteed income is scary but it has made our quality of life so much better. I actually enjoy the school run! What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your ownbusiness? Getting the work! It’s hard out there for any self employed person or trade but through word of mouth and recommendation things are beginning to pick up. What has been the most rewarding aspect? For me, it’s always been seeing the finished product. I’m a perfectionist and good at what I do and the most satisfying thing is showing the client the end result. Is there anything else you would like to add? I have a face book page MJC Stone, which I use to load pictures of my completed jobs so please take a look! I’m local too, so keep an eye for my sign written utility vehicle and, perhaps, give me a wave!

#fosterin

Fostering February is a campaign aiming to raise awareness about what foster caring involves, alongside dispelling some of the myths and misconceptions which surrounds it. No matter where you are in the country, there is someone near you making a difference to children and young people’s lives by offering them the love and everyday human needs they deserve- things which most of us take for granted. So why couldn’t it be you? Fostering February is all about learning more about the facts and becoming properly informed on how to become a foster carer; for example, did you know you don’t need to own your own home or be married to become a carer? If you are thinking about life as a foster carer, the campaign takes time to answer your questions, and pushes to find out if you could make an amazing difference on a young person’s passage to adulthood.

live laugh love Foundation the buddy bag appeal Imagine if your whole world changed in a day. Imagine having to leave everything you own and everyone you know.

A matter of fact • You may be shocked to learn that 48,000 children require emergency accommodation in the UK each year. • Children fleeing violent situations often have to leave home quickly, without the chance to collect basic items. These children arrive in emergency accommodation with just the clothes they are wearing. • There are over 68,000 children in care in England. Almost 400,000 children received support from children’s services in England during 2014. Source: NSPCC web site Department of Education 2014

Buddy Bags for Children in Emergency Care We have created the Live Love Laugh Foundation in response to the rising number of children who enter emergency care after fleeing violent situations at home. Restoring a sense of safety and security into a child’s life during a traumatic time is one of the first steps to recovery. By providing these children with a few essential items, we can help make the transition into emergency care a little easier. To support children in this situation we have created the Buddy Bag to provide comfort when all else has been removed.

What is a Buddy Bag? A Buddy Bag is a backpack that contains all the essential items a child needs. They include toiletries, pyjamas, socks and underwear. They also include comfort items such as a book, a photo frame and a teddy bear. A Buddy Bag is something a child can call their own, no matter where they go. Buddy Bags are tailored to suit babies and children according to age groups and gender and cater specifically for children aged 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 and 13-16 years old. Purpose Our purpose is to provide 20,200 Buddy Bags to children who arrive in emergency accommodation without the essential items they need to help restore a sense of safety and security. How can I help? Due to the nature of our foundation and appeal, we’re always looking for help from individuals and businesses alike. Whether you have some spare time and skills, items or cash to donate, all is welcome. For more information please contact Angela Gakis, via contact details below.

live laugh love Foundation Where did the Buddy Bag idea come from?

During a visit to Australia in 2014 our founder, Karen Williams, was inspired by an article about The Alannah and Madeline Foundation (www.amf.org.au) which has delivered more than 50,000 Buddy Bags to children in emergency care in Australia since 2007. On returning to the UK, Karen researched the facilities available to children in emergency care and discovered a huge need for Buddy Bags in the UK. To ensure as many children as possible can benefit from the Buddy Bag scheme, Karen set up The Live Love Laugh Foundation and launched the Buddy Bag appeal in the UK, with the help and support of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

Parndon Mill exhibition recent work Recent Work is an exhibition of colourful paintings in acrylic on canvas and paper by Chris Roskell complemented by sculptural ceramics by Nigel Earle.

Nigel Earle has both his home and studio

For many years Chris Roskell lived in Harlow and occupied a studio here at Parndon Mill. He now has a large studio in Hastings enabling him to produce on whatever scale he chooses and to work on more than one painting at once. The artist states “I look for ‘situations’ that I recognise from my visual and emotional experience and develop them within the ‘arena’ of the canvass. Since moving from East Anglia to the South Coast thestimulus has changed, the work has changed. So here is some new work.”

His work has evolved from vessel forms to more complex pieces, often exploring what happens inside crevices and other spaces as much as the exterior shape. Most recently he has been drawn to create mythical spaces evoked by legend. He works with a variety of stoneware and earthenware clays, using both glass and metallic elements to augment more traditional glazes and finishes.

Canine Partners Volunteers needed to help train assistance dogs for Canine Partners Dog-lovers in the area are being sought by national charity Canine Partners to take puppies into their own homes and begin their early training to be assistance dogs for people with disabilities. Canine Partners is specifically looking for volunteers, known as puppy parents, who can take a pup into their home from the age of eight weeks until they are 12-14 months old. They will need to have time, commitment and a sense of humour, and be able to attend a regular training class. A trainer will be on hand to support them in their key role at classes and at home in one-to-one sessions.

training and are matched with someone who has a disability. “Although previous experience with dogs is not required, a puppy parent will need to be home most of the day, have a secure dog-friendly garden, enjoy the fun of classes and outings and have the stamina to manage an active young puppy. Canine Partners will provide food and equipment for the puppy and cover all veterinary costs for the duration of the puppy parent relationship.”

Puppy parents teach the assistance-dogsin-training basic obedience, social skills and core tasks that are essential before they move on to advanced training, where their skills are refined specifically for a disabled person’s needs. Puppy satellite supervisor Ronnie Paskouis said: “Volunteering as a puppy parent is a rewarding opportunity for people who live in and around the area. Puppy parents train puppies in the early stages of their development before they go on to advanced

puppy appeal About Canine Partners Canine Partners is a registered charity that assists people with disabilities to enjoy a greater independence and quality of life through the provision of specially trained dogs, whose well-being is a key consideration. More than 1.2 million people in the UK use a wheelchair, and a significant number of those would benefit from a canine partner. The dogs are carefully matched to the applicant’s needs and lifestyle, no matter how challenging. They are trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening and shutting doors, unloading the washing machine, picking up dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and getting help in an emergency. The Charity is working in partnership with Help for Heroes, and aims to train dogs to meet the needs of people with even the most complex disabilities including members of HM Armed Forces. These life transforming dogs also provide practical, physiological, psychological and social benefits including increased independence and confidence as well as increased motivation and self-esteem. A canine partner also brings companionship, a sense of security and increases social interaction. Canine Partners receives no government funding and is wholly dependent on public donations and legacies.

Policing our lOCAL COMMUNITY Harlow North PCSO Chrisie Goodman

I returned to duty after the new year after a period of sick leave and would like to thank all those of you that have stated how much they have missed my presence in Old Harlow. I am sure many of you will have read my colleagues article last month regarding the proposal to cut PCSO numbers from April 2016 the latest update is that the exact number of PCSOs to be retained will be announced late January and then we will all personally be told in mid February whether we have a job or not. Meanwhile I shall continue to patrol the area of Old Harlow, Churchgate Street and New Hall whenever my duties permit right up until the end of March. There has been a sharp increase of thefts of vehicles transit vans in particular. Please refer to the Essex Police website for in depth advice on vehicle security. You can get more information about alarms, immobilisers

and other security devices by emailing the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre at security@thatcham.org. Now that I am back, beat surgeries will continue as before. Thank you again to everyone that has expressed their concern and disappointment regarding the proposed job losses to PCSO’s I have enjoyed the past eleven years enormously meeting and getting to know so many of you in the local community. I will of course update you as to the final decision in the March edition of CM17 (deadline permitting). Surgeries Mon 1st Feb 10-12noon at Old Harlow Baptist Church Hall, Wed 10th Feb 4-5pm at Old Harlow Library and Sat 20th Feb 1-2pm at Old harlow Library. Email

mind in west essex Helping local families to be happier By Barbara Scoltock

I work for Mind in West Essex, running their family therapy service. My colleague Susie and I have been lucky enough to work with families from the local area for many years. Susie and I met when we first trained as counsellors, and later we both completed a Systemic Family Therapy course at St George’s University Hospital in South London. Recently our small team has been boosted by the arrival of Julie who has lots of experience working with schools in Hertfordshire. We encourage as many family members as possible to attend therapy. It helps to build up the bigger picture. We have had eight family members from three generations in a room with two therapists. Although usually we work with smaller family units. We always provide two therapists. One will take the lead role and do all the talking. The second therapist is there to listen, observe and also to help comfort anyone who becomes distressed. This helps to give a more

balanced view when we come to discuss what families are telling us. It also helps us navigate how we will approach future sessions in a positive way, steering families towards more harmonious relationships with one another. Family therapy lasts up to 90 minutes per session. It can be an intense hour and a half. Sessions can be frustrating, insightful, touching, funny or sad. Often they are a mixture of all these things. But most of our clients find it very rewarding when we get deeper into the issues that trouble them and start looking at how to improve things. We are delighted when people give us feedback saying that things are getting better as a result of the therapy they have received. This is the most rewarding feeling in the world and one of the main reasons for doing the job. If you would like to know more about Family Therapy please contact Barbara.

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING BEEF STEW WITH HORSERADISH DUMPLINGS 1kg braising steak, cut into chunks 2 tbsp seasoned flour 3 tbsp sunflower oil 2 large onions, peeled and sliced 300ml Guinness 450ml beef stock 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3 large carrots, peeled and sliced 2 sprigs fresh thyme 2 bay leaves FOR THE DUMPLINGS

THIS IS A TRADITIONAL AND WARMING CASSEROLE

75g self-raising flour

WHICH IS IDEAL TO SERVE TO THE FAMILY

40g shredded suet

DURING THE CHILLY WINTER MONTHS.

1 tsp grated horseradish

WITH STEAMED GREEN VEGETABLES SUCH AS

SERVE

1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley

BROCCOLI,

SAVOY CABBAGE OR GREEN BEANS.

1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Place the meat and seasoned flour in a large plastic freezer bag. Seal the bag and shake well, until the meat is coated in the flour. 2. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and brown the meat in small batches, over a high heat. Add more oil if necessary. Transfer the meat to a large casserole dish. 3. Add the remaining oil to the pan and fry the onions for 5 minutes. Pour in the Guinness, stock and Worcestershire sauce and bring to the boil. Pour the liquid and onions over the meat and add the carrots, thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Cover and cook for about 3 hours until the meat is tender, stirring once. 4. To make the dumplings, place the flour, suet, horseradish and parsley in a large bowl. Season with half a teaspoon of salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper, then stir in enough cold water to mix to a soft dough. Using lightly floured hands, divide and shape into 8 dumplings. 5. Uncover the stew and gently sit the dumplings on top of the meat. Cover and cook for a further 20 minutes until the dumplings are fluffy and risen. Serve sprinkled with extra freshly ground black pepper. TIP: If you don’t want to serve this stew with dumplings, try topping with sliced potatoes instead. Arrange 3 large peeled and thinly sliced potatoes in concentric circles on top of the stew after 2 hours cooking time. Season well and dot with butter. Return to the oven, uncovered, and cook for a further 1- 1¼ hours until both meat and potatoes are tender.
