WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The june edition of the cm17 connection “Make the CM Connection your first selection for community views and business news!” What do you think? A local Councillor tweeted this tag line to me recently. Just about made my day! People can be so generous can’t they? Thank you Councillor Ian Beckett! I love it too when residents care enough to get in touch. It means that I’m doing something right and when I’m not, it provides me with the opportunity to put things right. Always a win/win and a positive in my book.

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear Residents, Jobs come back to Harlow: As MP I work hard to help to bring jobs and businesses into Harlow. If our companies flourish, more residents get jobs, family finances are protected, and the whole prosperity of our town increases. For this reason, it was really good news to hear that employment is increasing in our town - the total number of job-seeker claimants is down 209 since two years ago. Across the country, employment is at a record high with over 31 million people in work. Average wages are also up by over 2.1% which alongside recent tax cuts and the Government’s introduction of the National Living Wage - will help hard-working families with the cost of living. Apprenticeships For a long time now, I have campaigned and championed apprenticeships. Whenever I visit Harlow businesses, the first question I often ask, is how many apprentices do they have? One of our biggest companies in Harlow is Raytheon - currently based at the Pinnacles - but soon to move to our new Enterprise Zone in London Road with a £25 million pound investment in state of the art new premises. A couple of weeks ago, I met some young Harlow based Raytheon Apprentices, in Parliament. They were outstanding and inspirational individuals. I thought to myself that these apprentices represent the very best of the future for our town- they have achieved their apprenticeships in a great company entirely on merit, work incredibly hard, and will no doubt have jobs in Raytheon in the future. Another example as to why Harlow’s younger generation have so much to offer.

Meeting with Raytheon apprentices

The EU In the run up to the election, very few people in Harlow believed that the Government would keep its promise to hold an EU Referendum. Whatever one’s view, at least the Prime Minister has kept his promise and we now have an IN-Out EU Referendum on 23rd June. No one is imposing the decision on us, only Harlow residents and the British people will have their say. My main concern re the EU is what will happen to jobs and security. I recently received a letter from Robert Stuart Ltd, a long-standing business in Edinburgh Way, in the aerospace industry, employing eighty-five local people, including apprentices. They wrote to me recently stressing that they were incredibly worried about Britain leaving the EU because much of their business was in Europe. In other words, Harlow jobs could be significantly at risk if Britain exited from the European Union. Other businesses in Harlow have told me the same. The problem is that many of our Harlow jobs depend on our trade with the EU, and many thousands of jobs across Essex and the East of England. Although there are different considerations when we decide how we will vote on 23 June, the future of our town’s prosperity, our employment and jobs, and protecting family finances will be a number one priority. Best wishes, Robert

local business people in person Name and Business Faye Brownjohn and I own and teach at Pole Train Fitness. Where do you live? Church Langley, Harlow but originally from Enfield. I moved Harlow with my husband 9 years ago. What’s your favourite local venue? Frankie & Bennys - my family are regulars! What’s your favourite local shop? I’d have to say Primark. Whenever I go into town, I’ll always find myself popping in there whether I need something or not! Fantastic value for money. What do you like best about Harlow? I have 2 dogs and love walking them along the river in the summer - the hidden gems that are on your doorstep but you don’t always know about... What do you like doing when you’re not working?

I love fitness and exercise, so I’m likely to be in the gym if I’m not working. I set up my business because... Fitness is an industry I love. I count myself lucky to be able to get out of bed everyday and actually want to go to work. I’d been out of the fitness industry for about 10 years following a career break. However, once I took up Pole Fitness myself, I realised how much I missed teaching. It was the right time for me to get back into it. Favourite one liner or saying? “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you”. This is a powerful statement and so true. You need to work hard to reach goals - fitness or otherwise. Put the effort in and you will reap the rewards. Life isn’t easy, but it’s what you make it.

Harlow u3a Harlow u3a choir and friends

Harlow U3A Choir and their friends will be performing a programme of songs for summer to celebrate H M The Queen’s birthday and to raise funds for their chosen charities, St Clare Hospice and Harlow Parkinson’s Support.

The choir is one of the many activities available via Harlow University of the Third Age. It welcomes members without a voice test or the requirement to read music but expects everyone to work at attaining a great harmonic sound whilst having fun.

Following the great success of last year’s concert – which raised over £2,000 for local charities - the choir will again be performing at Burnt Mill Academy, First Avenue, under the inspirational leadership of musical director Gabby Hanley, on Sunday 12th June at 3pm. Refreshments and a raffle will be available. Tickets, priced at £7 for adults, £5 for children and £20 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children), are available from Ann Flint on (01279) 414785.

silver swans A National ballet school specialising in ballet for the retired By Carrie Johnson

We are a National Ballet School with fully qualified teachers who specialise in ballet for the retired. I developed Silver Swans was developed with the idea of bringing together a community of retired ladies to regain fitness, flexibility and companionship through the medium of ballet. Having four daughters and spending many hours watching them enjoy the love of ballet, I pondered on the thoughts of why ballet could not be continued through adulthood and into the silver years. Zumba, aerobics, the gym and keep fit can be intimidating not to mention hard on limbs, knees, hips and shoulders. However, exercise especially gentle exercise has shown great improvements in flexibility, posture and core muscles.

Therefore, I investigated the benefits of ballet and to my surprise not only realised the physical benefits, but found that ballet and other forms of gentle exercise can ward off dementia (See article below). Armed with all this information, I set about finding the right teachers and venues for my classes. My teaching team are all highly trained and have a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion for dance but most importantly a sense of humour. We always end our classes with a welcome tea, coffee and biscuit. It’s not just about the exercise, it’s about making new friends and being party of a community. A Flock of Silver Swans...

IT’s your community

Old harlow Community day old harlow traders with harlow baptist church celebrate the queens 90th birthday To encourage a greater sense of community and working together in the business area of Old Harlow, the association was formed in 2015 from a number of the local traders, working with the local Baptist church, recently St Mary’s at Churchgate St has joined. Our aim is to promote the area and to encourage people to visit, shop, see what is available as well as having fun and enjoy community activities. Our Christmas “lights on” was the first event and was more successful than any of us imagined, the High Street was packed for the evening which had been many months in the planning. Having found a company that could arrange the repairs needed to electrical fittings in the High Street, we raised the money to have the repairs carried out and to purchase the decorations. This came from quiz nights, auctions and from donations from many of the businesses and the Baptist Church. Post Christmas we have been focused on the Queen’s Birthday celebrations on the 11th June, raising money to pay for that event and starting the planning for next Christmas.

Where:

High St, Market St and Fore Street

When:

Saturday 11th June

During the year we have planned more quizzes, a musical evening at the Baptist church and with food evenings at some local restaurants. The Queen’s birthday Street party is being supported by the shops, businesses, restaurants, pubs and churches and should be a really great time and will run from 11am – 4pm on the 11th, with music and food throughout the High Street and parts of Market and Fore St. It will carry on in the evening at The Green Man and The Crown. Support from the local traders and businesses has been amazing and this has helped to fund the Christmas lights and other events. We are currently raising funds to enable the lights to go up again this Christmas and the one after, so any help or donations would be welcome. For info on the Traders Assoc. LOCALs that launch: In 2014 Kimberlee Perry left the corporate world to create her dream business. You may have heard of it? It’s a fitness company, that she quite aptly, called (( BOUNCE ))™. Kimberlee’s passion and enthusiasm is contagious, here she shares her story...

When did you set up your business? (( BOUNCE ))™ went live in September 2014. It was my dream to have fitness company that was different to any other class around: friendly and inclusive while pushing you to a physical limit incorporating dance elements and most importantly - making fitness fun! That’s what jumping on trampolines was made for right? And so (( BOUNCE ))™ was born! How did you decide on your company name? I wanted something defining, standout and relatable. Rebounding is all about how hard you ‘bounce’ - you can make our workouts suit any level, age or ability by simply bouncing lightly or pushing down much harder to increase the intensity. This is a defining feature of what we do, so the name was a no brainer. To be unforgettable I added the double brackets either side, which clearly represents the movement in which we jump. Where did you qualify/study? TRAINFitness, is the UKs premier industry certifier of ‘Exercise to Music’ and Personal Training qualifications. I studied for a number of years in the field of fitness and I am also qualified in Dance having a dancing background in Australia. As a specifically qualified Rebound instructor and the Master Trainer of (( BOUNCE ))™ certifications in the UK and soon to be internationally, we also offer others the ability to train and franchise in (( BOUNCE ))™ via the company’s training and placement program.

26

Experience in the business? As a devoted fitness fanatic and as the company Director I make a point of doing all aspects of the business from editing the website, managing the booking system, planning advertising campaigns, social media, training other instructors, supporting the franchisees, but my favourite parts are choreographing our routines and teaching our exciting (( BOUNCE ))™ classes live every week. What work did you do before setting up the business? I always knew I’d have my own business so was preparing for it sideline to working for the last 10 years in the corporate world as the Sales Manager for a top London Events agency. It was fast paced, I travelled the world and managed a large team of salespeople to hit targets and increase market share. Events management is all about juggling many aspects at once to ensure a customer’s experience is optimum so I focus on applying such business skills to (( BOUNCE ))™ treating our company as more than just an exercise class - it’s an experience, a ‘team event’ every session. We work to impress our attendee’s exercise expectations, not demand they employ ours. What is your motto? Our motto is “FUN, FRIENDLY, FIERCE!” These 3 aspects typify our #bouncearmy and

(( BOUNCE ))™ to me are the most important aspects of how to love life to the full-est! What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? Running your own business never ever ends. There’s no ‘night off’ or ‘free weekend’. I’m constantly on a phone, computer or trampoline and that’s tough on family life so I struggle with guilt as does every working mum I’m sure. Having a newborn baby at the time of launching my business was pretty crazy too. Hormones make you do wild things! But my son Jasper is the inspiration for our famous ‘child friendly’ classes - which so many Mums tell me they truly need and love and so business challenges for me are about constantly finding the positives to counteract hardships... I can’t keep using hormones as my excuse anymore, Jaz is now 2 years old. What has been the most rewarding aspect? We absolutely love seeing the smiles on our attendees faces in class and hearing how much they enjoy fitness as a result of what we do. Exercise can be one of the hardest things in the world to do for so many people, so to have made a difference to people’s lives and hearing them say they have improved health and happiness because of (( BOUNCE ))™ is the best thing in the world. Our unique instructors are relentless in their pursuit of making exercise excitable and inspiring! We have also just recently announced a partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support which means every time you book a class, 5p of your fee goes straight to the charity; we are absolutely thrilled to work with such a vital organisation which helps so many of us. To have them approach us was a really special moment

special feature

of achievement which validates that supporting each other in health is integral within the community, working together achieves amazing things. Are you the only employee? We have 20+ franchises throughout the UK and 40 amazing instructors who are so committed to (( BOUNCE ))™. However the most integral part of our success is thanks to the combined efforts of our Management Team constantly working together: Kate Atkinson ‘Operations & Franchise Manager’, Mel Davis in charge of ‘PR, Marketing & Events’, Kate Tozer in ‘Training & Development’ plus Nat Hall as ‘Team Leader’ shows we fully believe that when women support each other amazing things can be achieved. With a strong loyalty and appreciation for the real benefits of teamwork we equally contribute to make (( BOUNCE ))™ as successful as it is. How should potential customers contact you? Advance booking and payment is essential as trampoline spaces are limited. Our online booking system shows live availability and offers a ‘waiting list’ if sessions are full. Head over to www.bouncefitbody.com to book online. Anything else you’d like to add? 10 minutes at (( BOUNCE ))™ is the same as a 30 minute run - there’s oodles of scientific research to support Bounce’s benefits, but most famously, NASA calls it “The most effective exercise yet devised by man”.

Harlow Chorus 40th Anniversary season – Final concert

Words by Mick Rumens

We shall be at St Michael’s church, Bishop’s Stortford for our final concert of this season. Commencing at 7.30pm, we will present an entertaining, comic opera, Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Iolanthe”, first performed on 25th October 1882. Gilbert & Sullivan opera’s are synonymous with The Doyle Carte Opera Company ever since, in 1875, Richard D’Oyly Carte asked the dramatist, W.S Gilbert and the composer, Arthur Sullivan to collaborate on a short comic opera to round of an evening’s entertainment. When that work, Trial by Jury, became a success, Carte put together a syndicate to produce a full-length Gilbert & Sullivan work, The Sorcerer (1877), followed by H.M.S Pinafore (1878). With the sensational international success of Pinafore, Carte formed a new partnership that became the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. This professional light opera company staged Gilbert and Sullivan’s Savoy operas nearly year-round in the UK, sometimes touring Europe, North America and elsewhere from the 1870’s until 1982. The company was revived for short seasons and tours from 1988 to 2003.

Our performance of Iolanthe will provide a rare opportunity for members of the chorus to take on no less than eleven solo parts. The main characters are; The Lord Chancellor; Earl of Mountararat; Earl Tolloller; Private Willis (of the Grenadier Guards); Strephon (an Arcadian Shepherd); Queen of the Fairies; and Iolanthe (A Fairy, Strephon’s Mother) plus Fairies ; Celia; Leila; and Fleta, and, finally Phyllis (an Arcadian Shepherdess and Ward of Chancery). We will, additionally, have a ‘Narrator’ linking the individual scenes. Whether familiar with Gilbert & Sullivan or not, this enormously successful comedy opera satirises many aspects of British government, law and society which some may consider is as relevant now as it was in the late 1800’s. I will provide a little more insight into this humorous plot next month, but the evening promises to be a hilarious and heart-warming end to our wonderful 40th concert season. Well worth putting in your diary!!

GlobeTrotting Aborist back in local trees After many months working in the Canadian forests, scaling new heights of enormous trees and recently appearing in a conservation documentary in Vancouver Island, local Arborist Nick Hayes and his team are back in our trees. Some years ago, Nick was selected from 130 applicants and was fortunate enough to secure this position working and training for the City of London Corporation in woodland restoration projects in the wonderful Epping Forest, linked to Capel Manor College – the hub of arboriculture training. The primary objective of work within Epping Forest is to keep the woodlands safe, as well as prolonging the life of the veteran trees and maintaining biodiversity within the woodland, which contains many different species of trees

with high conservation and habitat values. Nick knew from the first day of work in Epping Forest that he had found his niche. His love of the outdoors and tree work, coupled with a spirit of adventure, then guided Nick to seek new challenges in Vancouver Island, Canada, working with the West Coast Forestry Organisation to save woodlands within British Columbia. Whilst based in Vancouver Island, Nick was working with the West Coast Forestry

tree & garden Service Organisation restoring woodlands within British Columbia. During the early 1900’s mass amounts of deforestation occurred in British Columbia. Logging companies would purchase land privately, log the areas and leave. At this time there was no legislation to replant the trees that they had removed. These regions are now known as second growth woodlands and species such as Hemlock, Spruce, Cedar and Fir amongst others grow densely together, limiting light to the forest floor, diminishing the growth of flora and fauna. Therefore expelling bio diversity. Working with the West Coast Forestry Organisation, Nick helped to bring the woodlands back to life and restore the light to the forest floor. You can find the 7 minute documentary on the company website www. hayestreecare.com or by searching “bringing back the light” in YouTube. Trees can become unsafe for many different reasons, such as growth deformities, weak structural unions, excess weight, root damage and disease. As the interface between trees and people, Arborists such as Nick understand the need for balance between safety, conservation and continual growth. ‘The Maintenance of our trees in essential to our everyday life in order to keep the trees healthy and safe, also to allow more light into our properties and gardens, prevent damage to our foundations, to provide and fuel, energy and warmth. With nesting season in full swing it is our duty to take precautions when working on trees and hedges in our gardens and local community.’ Hayes Trees and Garden Services is a friendly local company that has gone from strength to strength, providing the service of high quality, work and expertise. 1. Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. 2. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways. 3. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps. 4. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary. 5. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice. 6. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

TIP: Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape.

The Henry Moore Primary School Sporting Success!

YEAR 5 & 6 WIN NETBALL TOURNAMENTS On Tuesday 15th March the Year 5 & 6 netball team competed in the Passmores netball tournament, scoring 38 goals and conceding none. After winning all the games they played, The Henry Moore Primary School won the tournament; The Henry Moore Primary School had qualified for the Harlow netball final! The final was on the 22nd March at Mark Hall School. There were ten teams that qualified for the final. Each team showed great sportsmanship and presented fantastic netball skills. The Henry Moore Primary School won all their games and the players were crowned winners of the tournament, meaning they are now through to the county finals. BY TED JOHNSON AND JAIDEN MUTSAMBIWA Football It’s been an excellent year for the Henry Moore football team. We’ve been lucky enough to have such a talented pool of players to pick from this year, meaning we’ve actually been able to select two teams for the different competitions we’ve entered. One of our teams won a Harlow based FA competition in style (not conceding a goal!), qualifying for regional finals in Southend in which we finished third, an

outstanding achievement. Our other team played brilliantly in a competition run by Leyton Orient. The team is currently competing in the Harlow Schools Cup. We are now in the Quarter Finals against St Lukes. Cross Country Success! Congratulations to our Cross Country team who went forward from the Harlow District Sports Cross Country to the Essex Finals. Henry Moore Year 4 girls took the gold medal to become the best Year 4 girls team in Essex, led by Jemima Pratt who finished first in the race itself. Teams from all over Essex County took part in the event which was held at Hadleigh Park, Southend, where the conditions were ideal for running. As a school, Henry Moore was represented by a team that consisted of Year 3 to Year 6 children. Years 3&4 ran 1000 metres and Years 5&6 ran 1500 metres. All of our children should be very proud of their individual performances and the effort that they put in. Well done to all of our children and thank you to all of the staff for their dedication and hard work!

Fancy a paddle?

Even local people are amazed when they first discover the secret of Redricks lakes, a secluded lakeside and café based next to the River Stort hidden between Harlow and Sawbridgeworth. The lakes offer a great place to start paddling with starter sessions for groups and parties looking for an adventure together on the River Stort and an ideal spot to explore the historic mills and locks and Malting’s, many dating back to the opening of the navigation in 1769. One question we always get from our beginners is do we have to capsize or come out of the boat upside down. Often paddlers are put off by what to do if a boat goes over. To help them we have very stable boats with specialist skegs which help build beginners confidence as well as paddling downstream in a straight line. We leave capsizing for the first time for one of our pool sessions aimed at developing confidence, rolling and specialist skills in the comfort of the pool. Whoosh Explore offer summer tours of the river as well as specialist individualised coaching for adults on a Saturday morning as well as regular Junior coaching sessions on Saturday afternoons. After a short introduction in either open boats or touring kayaks we offer paddlers the opportunity to explore the river from the

44

What’s on at Whoosh This year we are running tours of the River Stort from Redricks lakes, Sawbridgeworth as well as taster paddling sessions from Redricks lakes to Pishobury park on the following Saturday mornings where we will be exploring the parkland by river up to Feakes Lock. For keen paddlers there is also the option of a trip up to the Sawbridgeworth maltings, with time to enjoy a break at one of the Cafes and tea rooms, or a quick look at the antiques and curios for sale in the antiques centre before a leisuely paddle back downstream. at redricks! lakes and with our fleet of trailers are able to tow boats for more challenging tours to some great rivers with both placid and white water enthusiasts catered for. Part of our philosophy is to encourage young paddlers to gain qualifications and skills in paddle sport with our ‘U canoe’ paddlers developing coaching experience, helping them to develop and run sessions at the club. We have open canoes ideal for couples to paddle together and kayaks available to paddle as an individual, either as part of a small group or as a family. We try to theme our paddles so we have adult sessions, teenage sessions or mixed family sessions for learning to paddle together as well as delivering one off experiences for groups

of friends looking to have a memorable day out together. With family time very precious and so many commitments we don’t require paddlers to become locked into membership of the club. We have many club friends supporters who may only paddle 2-3 times a year.
