WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The july edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

As I write Euro 2016 has just started and as yet our summer has yet to show it’s face - the sun is definitely sitting on the subs bench, actually I don’t even think it’s left the changing rooms! It’s just occurred to me too, that by the time you receive this edition the most important vote of our generation will have been cast. Will we still be part of Europe or independent of it? That’s a pretty incredible thought! Regardless of the outcome, I think change is coming and in such times we need to do what we do best - no, not drink tea and moan about the weather! We need to roll up our sleeves, put differences aside, come together, support one another and move each other and ourselves forwards. This magazine is full of local businesses, groups and organisations that already do just that - support and help each other. It’s a real privilege to be a part of it, if you’re not already, why not join us? Talking of all in it together, early in June Church Langley Church held a “Thank you community meal” as part of the Heart4Harlow Festival. It was aimed at bringing together all those that contribute to their local communities with celebratory meals held in all of the wards in Harlow. I can’t tell you what a lovely experience it was, sitting sharing a meal with people who do so much locally - it was very uplifting and motivating being surrounded by such caring people. The evening ended with a performance by CL Voices, which was excellent! People from all walks of life united together... I’d like to extend my thanks to Ann & Charlie Kosla and all of the team involved in creating such a special evening. You rock! Until next time, Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear Residents, I’ve been working hard to represent your views to the bus services and the train operators in Harlow and the villages. Working with consumer group, Which?, I have been campaigning for better service and punctuality on the Abellio Greater Anglia line after their own survey showed that residents weren’t happy with the service they were receiving. In my latest discussions with Abellio they have said the following: - The National Rail Passenger Survey is a much better indicator, with Abellio receiving an 81% satisfaction rating. - The National Rail Passenger Survey reflects the £40m investment made during the current franchise to improve the train fleet. - The launch of an online delay/repay system for season ticket holders will make it easier to claim compensation for delays. - Compensation will be available by cheque as an alternative to rail vouchers. - Punctuality on the West Anglia route was 90.9% in the most recent period, which is well above the national average of 89.0%. In response, Which? replied with the following: - There are differences between the two surveying methods, however to suggest that the one is more reliable than the other may be seen as a convenient way of bypassing the issues. - Which? survey asks passengers about their experience of all their journeys over the last 12 months. - Which? star rating is based on the service in the past year, to obtain a comprehensive view. - With regards to their introduction of cash refunds as well as vouchers, whilst welcome, this was made a requirement made of train companies in summer 2015 so it is expected they provide such a refund.

Meeting commuters at Roydon train station

I welcome some of the improvements that Abellio have made, particularly to Roydon Station and I was pleased to visit some weeks ago and meet with commuters whose journeys are now greatly improved. However, it is clear from the Which? survey that there is a lot of unhappiness felt by commuters generally, and I will continue to work hard to ensure that Abellio addresses this. I have also been getting a lot of messages from residents who are concerned about changes in the bus timetables and the punctuality of buses across the town. I have been in regular discussion with the bus companies and I am holding another meeting soon with Arriva. If any residents have any specific concerns about the bus services in their area, please get in touch with me by emailing halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com and I will raise it with them. Whenever I am speaking to residents, I understandably receive regular complaints about the state of our roads and potholes. I have compiled a huge database of the potholes around the town and I am in regular contact with the council about them to check their status and ask for them to be fixed. If you are suffering with potholes in your area, you should report them on the Essex Highways website, but if you are not satisfied that they are being fixed, then I would be happy to contact the council on your behalf about them. I will continue to do all I can to represent residents’ concerns to the council. Best wishes, Robert

gibberd gallery exhibition: An exhibition of work by Peter Randall Page RA

This extravagant and vibrant exhibition of carvings, bronzes, works on paper and maquettes sees the work of Essex born and internationally renowned artist Peter RandallPage RA come to the East of England for the very first time at the Gibberd Gallery, managed by the Harlow Art Trust. This exhibition will be a celebration of the artist, his working methods and the ideas that inspire him. The gallery will be transformed into a journey through Peter’s artistic transitions allowing visitors to examine techniques close up and investigate their beginnings in the natural world and the mathematics which are within each form. The journey begins with the stone carving Warp and Woof placed in The Water Gardens, creating a unique marker and a starting point for visitors to this ground-breaking show. This will be an exhibition that lives within the gallery in a series of ‘acts’ each section and artwork representing a different part of his working practice. Peter delves into the mathematics of natural forms exploring patterns, camouflage and symmetry as well as its sensuality and inherent rhythm leading to a distinct and robust body of work each tangibly connected but distinctly unique. Peter’s enquiring working process leads to passionate study

of forms and theory of patternation within nature. Pattern is usually a term used for the application of decoration to a surface of an object. Peter’s exploration of the term and its fundamentality for natures existence brings a whole new meaning to pattern, being used within not just the aesthetics of the work but is concept and meaning. Sketchbooks and ephemera show his working and application of study to practical objects. No study however is required when coming face to face with these intensely captivating works, instinctively we recognise and react to their geometry and beauty as we do to nature everyday. Peter describes this as “plants, in common with the rest of the world, enter our consciousness as subjective feelings as well as more quantifiable information; we recognise them as an aspect of the biological system of which we ourselves are a part; they nourish our spirits as well as our bodies and stimulate our imaginations as well as our intellects’’ Stand out works include the ceramic mosaic Wing (2009) which magnifies the intricate cellular structure of a grasshopper wing with each tile representing a single cell, this allows us to see the invisible in a solid and textured form. The series of three bronze works Theme and Variation juxtaposes order

‘caught in the act’ and randomness cleverly created with the use of a natural boulder with thousands of ping pong balls attached in a regular pattern following the depression and rises of the original stone. Cast in bronze and painted in black these deep and alluring sculptures intrigue with their uniformed nodules and dark matter quality. This exhibition is a fitting display of contemporary sculpture for a town with an established reputation for 20th Century sculpture on public display across Harlow.

Harlow steel band Are you aged between 12-21, enthusiastic and always wanted to learn a musical instrument? Every Monday evening, the cheerful sound of steel pans can be heard in Bush Fair. If you listen closely, you will hear not only reggae and traditional Caribbean songs, but the latest chart songs being played by Harlow Steelband. Established in 2003, Harlow Steelband is a local charity run by a group of volunteers. The Band is a community project offering free musical classes on a weekly basis for young people aged 12-21. The Band’s aim is to give local kids the chance to channel their time and energy productively, learn new skills and give them a sense of purpose, whilst bringing together all abilities, ages and cultural backgrounds. There is no joining fee or monthly subs - the band is completely free to those who are prepared to commit to weekly rehearsals. No musical experience is needed as the Band’s tutor, Samuel Dubois, will have even those with no musical ability playing by the end of the evening as the music is taught through sound and memory, rather than notation. Many of our members have received the prestigious Jack Petchy Award for their

contribution and commitment to the Band, and last year Harlow Steelband were thrilled to be awarded The Jack Petchy Crystal Award which was given to 150 youth groups specially selected for their outstanding work. In 2012 Harlow Steelband played during the Harlow leg of the Olympic Torch Relay, and more recently at the Blackmore carnival, Hatfield Broad Oak Village Fayre, Lea Valley 10k & Family Fun Run, The Water Gardens and the Harlow Playhouse. Later this year, the Band are planning a Winter Sunshine event in the Harlow Water Gardens to thank the local community and The Jack Petchy Foundation for their support. So, if you are aged 12-21, and would like to find out more about joining Harlow Steelband, please contact Tracy Scott, Band Manager on 07852 594133 or e-mail harlowsteelband123@hotmail.co.uk. heartfelt thanks An update from chrisie goodman It’s nearly been two months since my last day working as a Police Community Support Officer in Old Harlow. I would like to thank all those residents that sent me messages of thanks and good wishes for the future. It has been a pleasure working in Old Harlow over the past 11 years and I am going to miss you all very much. On Wednesday 25th July I popped over to see the Old Harlow NAP residents who surprised me with flowers, a framed photo of Old Harlow and a glass engraved plaque. Such a kind thing to do, I couldn’t have asked for a better farewell from the community I served. On Thursday 26th May I attended Harlow Civic Centre where I was presented with a civic award for outstanding service to the local community

by the Chairman of Harlow Council - some of you may have seen my photo in the Harlow Star (although I was looking rather different from my days in uniform!). It was a great honour to be recognised in this way and it really meant a very great deal to me. Thank you to all the members of the Old Harlow Neighbourhood Action Panel (NAP) for giving up your time attending regular meetings and more recently volunteering to take part in the community speed watch initiative. Since my redundancy I have taken a short holiday and am now taking some time out while I decide what path to take. With many kind regards to you all... Keep safe!

Parndon Mill: open studios

A hub of creativity

Magnificent glass, weaving, calligraphy, guitar making, ceramics, jewellery and metalwork along with fine arts will be on view here during the Open Studios event. There will also be an insight into architectural skills and the work of graphic and product designers. The artists, craftspeople and designers will talk about their work and demonstrate their techniques. Glass blowing is particularly dramatic and visitors are invited to “have a go”. One hour taster workshops in fused glass, ceramics and felt making will also be offered. It will be a privilege to listen to Richard Ove Stokkereit playing one of David Rouse’s classical guitars in his studio from time to time during the weekend. There will also be an opportunity to watch the construction and firing of a traditional Roman dug-in-the-ground kiln built by Chris Lydamore, former manager of Harlow Museum. The articles to be fired will be made by schoolchildren with the guidance of Parndon Mill’s potters. Examples of the work of most of the participating artists will be exhibited in The Project Space on the ground floor and will hopefully tempt viewers to make the climb to the top floor of the mill. The exhibition in The Gallery, “Chaos Theory” will present cast glass sculpture by Parndon Mill artist Heike Brachlow who exhibits her work internationally. Refreshments will be available throughout the weekend. where: the gallery at

Local Charity: sailing towards success By Emmalena L. Ellis

One of Britain’s best kept secrets, the River Stort peacefully meanders for 24 miles between the Hertfordshire and Essex borders. Past watermills and country homes, weirs and nature reserves; CanalAbility provides the resources for mobility restricted and other disabled individuals who otherwise might have been left stranded on the banks; the freedom to travel on the river. For the past 27 years, the charity has offered day trips, short breaks and week-long cruises on their three specially adapted and accessible broad beam canal boats. Each cruiser has been fitted with all the immediate amenities necessary, so that everyone can board safely via ramps, hoists and lifts., and participate in the full boating experience The boats are all designed to be comfortable and spacious year round, with central heating available on the colder months; and wide decking at the front to take advantage of the beautiful and ever-changing views and local river-life. There is a fully-functional pump-out disabled toilet on board and an accessible galley equipped with kitchen utensils, kettle and fridge freezer. We encourage people to participate in their journeys with us; with remote steering available on the two day boats, for those who want to play a role as captain for the day. In addition, our large body of volunteers actively train as skippers and crew to ensure the smooth running and maintenance of our boats. They are offered the chance to learn and progress towards nationally recognised boating

qualifications; through the National Community Boats Association (NCBA). Friendly and polite, they are always happy to answer any questions you may have and will do their best to help make your experience as memorable as possible. Like all charities, we rely on the support and good will of the public to help raise funds to continue with our mission. We are a small charity, who works independently of government funding; and rely on hire fees, donations and fundraising support to keep us a float. This summer we are hosting in partnership with Move Beyond (www.movebeyond.net), a series of informal networking events at our mooring; close to Harlow station, to help connect local businesses and raise our profile in the community.

We hope that by making a donation, joining as a volunteer, fundraising for us, or simply spreading the word to those you know how would benefit from our facilities, you can help us do more great work and brighten the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. Fact! Fostering is about more than long-term care! Are you interested in fostering but are unsure of how it will work for you? Well, we may be able to provide you with an answer. Not all fostering placements require full-time care for long periods; in fact there are different types of fostering placements, here are details of just a few: Parent and child placements These placements are designed to support parents who require guidance in learning to care for their babies. Foster carers will be expected to work alongside a team of professionals to assess the parent’s ability to look after the child as well as offering support. Planned Break (Respite) Fostering When full-time foster carers need a short break, planned break foster carers can step in during holidays; weekends or when day-care isn’t available. Planned break foster carers will need to provide the same level of support as full-time carers during their placement. Planned break fostering is a great way for people who are considering fostering to gain experience before committing to placement. Short-term Fostering Children or young people who require short-term care will be placed with foster carers who are willing to provide care on a time-limited basis. Emergency fostering: If an unexpected event occurs which means a child can no longer remain in the family home, the child may need a safe place to stay at short notice on a short-term basis. An emergency foster carer will need to be prepared to provide their care at short notice should an unexpected event occur. If you feel like you could make a difference in a child’s life please give us a call or simply get in touch via the website or our social media pages.

Harlow Chorus 40th Anniversary season Gilbert & Sullivan’s - Iolanthe Words by Mick Rumens

Rehearsals have been gathering pace for our presentation of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera “Iolanthe” at St Michael’s church, Bishop’s Stortford commencing at 7.30pm on Saturday 16th July. This concert will be quite the most unusual performance by the Chorus for many years. The material for Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operas was always loaded with humour. Gilbert’s lyrics for their opera’s often targeted the aristocracy and political figures for satirical treatment. In this opera the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of the ineffective, privileged and dim-witted, whose only qualification to govern is noble birth. This opera revolves around the fairy, Iolanthe, who has been banished from Fairyland for twentyfive years for marrying a mortal, a crime usually punishable by death. But the Queen of the fairies had commuted the death sentence to banishment on condition that she left her husband and never had contact with him again. After enduring this for twenty-five years, and still missing Iolanthe deeply, the fairies pleaded with their Queen to pardon Iolanthe and restore her place in fairyland. On receiving her pardon, and being reunited with

her sister fairies, Iolanthe tells them that she has a son, Strephon, who is, therefore half mortal and half fairy. It transpires that he is in love with Phyllis, whose guardian is the Lord Chancellor who shows little enthusiasm for the idea of his ward marrying a mere shepherd. Within the plot are misunderstandings galore, for not only is the Lord Chancellor, but also many of the Peers, keen to seek the hand of the fair Phyllis. Being a fairy, Iolanthe, has not aged in her twenty-five years, so when she is seen consoling her son he is accused of having feelings for her even though they protest that they are in fact mother and son. There are many twists and turns to the story from the Queen of the fairies declaring that Strephon will enter Parliament and work to overthrow all the privileges enjoyed by the nobility, to the fact that the Lord Chancellor is, unbeknown to him, the mortal husband of Iolanthe, but she is forbidden to enlighten him under pain of death. You should come and enjoy the whole story to find out how peace is restored for all, ultimately. Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING MARINATED PEPPER PLATTER 6 mixed red, yellow and orange peppers 1 x 280g jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil 2 x 125g tubs mozzarella pearls, drained 2 tbsp capers, drained and rinsed Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tbsp balsamic oil Handful fresh basil leaves, shredded

A REALLY SUMMERY PLATTER OF GRILLED PEPPERS WITH SUN-DRIED TOMATOES AND MOZZARELLA PEARLS. MAKE A DAY IN ADVANCE AND CHILL IN THE FRIDGE UNTIL REQUIRED. SERVE WITH CRUSTY BREAD FOR A SIMPLE STARTER OR AS PART OF A SUMMER BUFFET.

1. Halve all the peppers, leaving the stalks on. Remove and discard the pith and seeds. Place all the peppers, skin-side up, on a grill pan and grill under a moderate heat for 7-8 minutes, until the skins are blistered and charred in places. Leave until cool enough to handle, then peel off as much of the skin from each pepper as you can. 2. Place all the grilled peppers, cut-side up, on a large platter. Drain and roughly chop the sun-dried tomatoes (reserving the oil). Fill each pepper half with some of the tomatoes, along with the mozzarella pearls and capers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Mix the reserved sun dried tomato oil with the balsamic vinegar and pour over and around the peppers. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Serve garnished with the shredded basil leaves.

TIP: Instead of mozzarella try another cheese, such as crumbled Feta or slices of Brie or Camembert.

mark hall academy Introducing Mr Dan Hawkins and his Vision for Success, Head of P.E. at Mark Hall Academy

Upon my arrival at Mark Hall Academy in January 2016, my aim was, and continues to be, to improve the provisions and standards of Physical Education within our students’ lives. I want PE to be at the very core of students’ education and not just to be seen as an ‘add-on’ to their very busy academic schedules. I want every student, regardless of ability, to have the opportunity to achieve, develop and excel in a range of different activities. We have had students in Year 7 take part in a town-wide Boccia tournament and we have a flourishing Netball Academy up and running in association with Tegate Netball Club. Our football teams have been very successful in the football and netball school leagues and our participation rates continue to rise in a range of different sports and activities. The girls football team even represented the academy in the Premier League schools tournament held at Chelsea FC! The summer term has seen the start of the Harlow Schools Athletics league which has been run here at Mark Hall Academy. The league has seen many successful performances and we have had top 3 finishes with our Year 7 & 8 boys’ and girls’ teams, our Year 9 boys’ team and our Year 10 girls’ team. We are organising and hope to have many top 3 medallists at the Harlow Schools Track & Field Championships on Friday 1st July.

Our Year 7 & 8 teams represented the academy at the English Schools Athletic Association (ESAA) Track & Field Cup in May, a national competition with some very stiff opposition! Most recently, at the Essex Schools Athletics Championships, Jamie Putt (Year 9) and Charlotte Pratt (Year 8) represented West Essex, both securing top 6 finishes. The academy and I are very proud of the students and the way they are changing their attitudes towards sport and physical activity. We will continue to improve our provisions, so if anyone has expertise in certain areas we would love to hear from you. Our participation and leadership opportunities will continue to grow and we will keep you updated with our progress and successes.

Mark Hall Academy earns ‘Good’ Ofsted rating Mark Hall Academy in Harlow, Essex has been praised for its commitment to raising standards and the significant improvement the secondary school has made since becoming an academy, which led to a rating of ‘Good’ from Ofsted inspectors in all categories – the second highest mark possible. This is an incredible achievement.

Book Week The children and the teachers all had a fantastic time during book week. We learned a lot about famous authors and the teachers and children also spent time sharing their favourite books. The children got so much enjoyment and learning opportunities through Book week. Reception children were using the ‘Fireman Sam’ story books to make fire engines in Design and Technology and Year 1 children were acting out the story of Handa’s surprise. On World Book Day the children were all invited to dress up as book characters (and so did the teachers!) and we had a great time ‘strutting ourselves down the cat walk’ to win some great book voucher prizes. The year 6 charity reps also carried out a fabulous job of selling second hand books to the children and we raised lots of money which will go towards buying new books for the school.
