WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The august edition of the cm17 connection For me August has always been the half way point of my year. OK, I appreciate that it’s not technically half way through the year but making it to August, a.k.a “The Summer Holidays” in one piece, with my sanity in tact, hair still attached to my head and on speaking terms with my family, is one of the seven wonders of my little world! The sense of elation knowing that you have successfully delivered your child to every audition, rehearsal, after school club and end of year show(s) on time, with pack lunch AND not forgotten a hair clip/brush, prop and spares “just in case” is a wonder to behold. I’ve calmed nerves before exams and productions and cheered at every fete, fair and festival and now it all stops. For the next 6 weeks, there are no more after school clubs to rush too. No more homework to preside over - no more early morning dashes to Tesco to pick up forgotten ingredients for a cookery lesson... It’s a milestone, a breather, a rest before it starts again in the Autumn and that’s a whole 6 weeks away... bliss! To all parents, grandparents and carers, teachers, school support staff, volunteers and group/club organisers - I salute you! (We made it!)

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, Apprenticeships are something I have been passionate about since my very first day as your MP. In fact, in my first speech in the House of Commons, I argued that we need change the way that we view apprenticeships so that they are held in the same regard as going to University. I strongly believe that we must transform the nature of vocational training and apprenticeships in our country to give young people the necessary skills and training to open up opportunities and jobs for their futures. I am incredibly proud of the Government’s record on this already - creating over 2 million new apprenticeships since 2010, abolishing employers’ National Insurance contributions for apprenticeships under 25, and introducing an Apprenticeship Levy so that the largest companies will support the training of our next generation. Locally, I’m very pleased to see more and more people in work and doing apprenticeships. The total number of benefit claimants is 108 lower than in June 2015 and 24 lower than in May 2016 and there have been over 4,100 apprenticeship starts in the constituency since 2010. In Harlow, I have seen the success of vocational education and apprenticeships first hand. I worked hard to get our state of the art University Technical College opened which now provides highskilled vocational training to young people ages 14-19, specialising in computing, science and engineering. Harlow College also have a fantastic apprenticeships school which has opened up thousands of opportunities for young people in our town. Just a couple of weeks ago, I met with some other apprentices on the Newhall development who were

training to be roofers with Contour Roofing (Essex) Ltd. They were so pleased to have the opportunity to learn and earn at the same time for such a supportive company. During my time in Parliament, I have worked hard to champion apprenticeships there too. I was the first ever MP to have a full time apprentice working with them in Parliament and I am delighted to be currently hiring my forth. After hiring my first apprentice, I set up the Parliamentary Academy Scheme which places apprenticeships in the offices of MPs from all Political Parties and has been a great success. I am honoured to have been appointed as Minister of State for Higher Education, Skills, Apprenticeships and Careers in the Department of Education by our new Prime Minister, Theresa May. I look forward to carrying my passion for apprenticeships and vocational training over to the Department and will continue to work hard for Harlow and champion apprenticeships in our town. I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather, while it lasts! Very best wishes, Robert

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Late summer strawberries The pick-your-own fruit farm at Cammas Hall is open until the end of September and has a lovely tea barn and nature trail. A mile outside Hatfield Broad Oak, surrounded by fields and woods, Cammas Hall is a favourite summer destination for many local families. The nature trail leads past the strawberries and raspberries, turns right at the end of the field and then left through a gap in the hedge, around the edge of a wood (with trees on your left). Keep on between fields of wheat and potatoes, following red arrows with info panels, until you reach a grassy track and turn right. At the end of a large field, turn right again along another grassy track, winding towards Row Wood. Approaching the wood, follow the arrows diagonally right across a meadow and the paths along the edge of fields, with fruit farm soon visible again, through trees on your right. Finally, the grassy tracks and arrows lead you right over a little bridge and back to the tea barn, where you can reward yourself with coffee, a slice of carrot cake or a punnet full of seasonal fruit. LOCATION: near hatfield broad oak Distance: less than 2 miles refreshments:

local business people in person Name and Business Daniel Stockley and I run Ed’s Garden Maintenance here in Harlow. Where do you live? I live in Harlow. What’s your favourite local venue? The Dusty Miller. Great food! What’s your favourite local shop? I like Whitehouse in the Harvey Centre. What do you like best about Harlow? There is plenty of green space and you don’t have to go far to be in the countryside. What do you like doing when you’re not working?
I really enjoy playing golf and regularly go to the local gym. I set up my business because... I was previously a chef and wanted a new challenge. Best thing that’s happened to you recently? Starting up Ed’s Garden Maintenance, I’m really enjoying it! Favourite one liner or silliest thing you’ve ever overheard: Two snowmen in a field and one says to the other... Can you smell carrots?

harlow cricket club building for the future
Harlow Cricket Club have always considered both the Club’s youth section and its involvement with the local community to be important to them. For many years it realised that the existing building did not offer enough in the way of facilities for all its users and so it began the process of finding a way to provide these. Finally after a considerable amount of fundraising, the dream has now been realised and work on the building of Harlow CC’s Community Clubhouse is well under way. The project has not been without its challenges, each year bringing with it both setbacks and successes. However, as well as a generous legacy from their late President, Vince Dunn, the Club have been successful in gaining financial support from Sport England who recognised the value of the work the Club puts into cricket and youth development. Although Sport England supports many projects, the level of support for the Club is unprecedented for an Essex cricket club.
or charities who would like to support the Club to contact them to find out how they can become involved in this exciting project. The new building will enable the Club to become an essential part of Sport England’s efforts to increase participation in a healthy lifestyle. Not only will the new building be a much improved home for the Club’s cricketers but it will be an invaluable asset for the local community not just today but for the future. If you think you would like to be involved with Harlow Cricket Club, they can always be contacted via the details below.
As well as all the normal facilities the building will have 4 changing rooms and is located between the Club’s two grounds so that each ground is served equally. A second phase is planned to further improve facilities for users of the building and fundraising is continuing for this. The Club is asking for any individuals, companies

Family Fun day Potters Arms are hosting a family fun day for jasmin
Potters Arms are helping to raise funds so Jasmine Moxom can walk like her twin, Summer. You may have read the article in the Daily Mirror that was published on Tuesday 14th June. The NHS have cut short the trail period for the operation that she had been accepted for, to enable her to walk. Her parents now have to fund the operation themselves if they ever want to see their little girl walk. The operation costs £30k, so you can appreciate this is not a small figure to be raised and they are going to need all the help they can get. Chloe Warner is doing a sponsored skydive on the 17th August to help raise money for

Harlow Chorus Appeal for new members & supporters
Words by Mick Rumens
The Chorus, and its Training Choir, have begun their summer break after the completion of an exciting 40th season. Our two new commissions and their world premieres, with two performances in Chelmsford Cathedral were memorable and we thank all those who attended in our support. Next season will surely be upon us sooner than we expect and for all existing and any new members, there will be many exciting ventures to keep us busy. Although I haven’t yet got all the details to hand the committee are already planning a concert Tour in the Cotswolds in July, two major concerts with the East London Chorus in London and at Snape Maltings are also scheduled. There is mention of a possible concert in Southwark Cathedral in London, where I first became a cathedral chorister back in 1952, and our Christmas 2016 concert will be in St John’s Epping early in December.
Harlow Chorus and its Training Choir would welcome new singers in all voices, but particularly any Tenors seeking a ‘new home’. If you look on our Internet site you will see that we meet on Monday evenings at St John’s Arts and Recreational Centre (the ARC) in Old Harlow and our first rehearsal will be Monday 5th September at 7.30pm. You really will be most welcome. Those who have not yet been able to attend any of our concerts will also be very welcome next season. Our musical director, Alex Chaplin, has a great programme of concerts for all to enjoy, whether singing or listening to, and we will be very pleased to entertain as many new supporters and audience members as possible. Look out for next months article to see more details of the concerts planned.

LOCALs that launch: This autumn local mum, Michelle Tohill will be launching a brand new day opportunity for adults with learning difficulties (aged 18+) called Aspire Support Learn (ASL). As a precursor, Michelle will be operating a Summer Club throughout August at the club’s base in Old Harlow...
When do you launch your business? Well, I am launching the summer club first from Tuesday 9th August which will run every Tuesday and Friday throughout August, with other days available upon request. Then, from the 19th September 2016, I will be opening a day opportunity for adults with learning disabilities, which will be open 5 days a week 9:30-3:30pm. How did you decide on your company name? I already had my own company called Angel Surprise Ltd so it made sense to abbreviate the existing company name to describe what the new business will do ASL - ASPIRE. SUPPORT. LEARN. What’s your experience in the care industry? I have been caring altogether for around 10 years. I nursed my mum at home for a long period of time until I sadly lost her in 2011. I’ve had the privilege of working as a PA for a lovely young lady with autism for several years too and I continue to volunteer as much as my time allows. Up until recently I worked as a community support worker in a local day centre for adults with learning disabilities which also covered reablement services in peoples homes. What work did you do before setting up the business? As well as working as a carer and community support worker I also owned an online gift/ hamper company but I’ve recently sold this business to enable me to completely concentrate on the summer club and day opportunity. I owe it to our customers to be 100% focussed on them.
24
What made you decide to set up your own business? I noticed that there was a really limited choice for day opportunities in and around Harlow for adults with learning disabilities to attend. We all like to have a choice, I think it’s really important that this choice extends to the facilities and opportunities offered to those with learning disabilities within our community. A choice and high quality service are values that, as a business, we hold very dear. What activities will you be offering in the club? Definitely outdoor games and sports (weather permitting) you name them, we’ll offer them. The indoor activities will include things such as floristry, arts & crafts and pottery. Our customers will be given a choice to make their own lunches, learn basic life skills including cookery. We will also be accessing the community for lunch, shopping and trips, if they choose too. What has been the most valuable lesson learned so far? To treat people how we expect to be treated regardless of their disability, we all deserve to be treated the same with respect, choice and care. What hurdles have you faced setting the business up? Finding suitable premises in Harlow with the right indoor and outdoor space was initially very
TO ADVERTISE CALL 01279 410345
Aspire Support Learn (ASL) difficult. However, I was lucky enough to come across Sheila at Old Harlow Cricket Club who has been amazing! She has been so supportive of what I am doing and so we have been given permission to use the facilities there. The grounds are just brilliant for outdoor activities and the location is great for shops, restaurants, library and for accessing the community in general. Also, there is a brand new building being built which we will be able to move into at the end of the year! What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? I have not found anything challenging as yet, however like any business I am sure there will be some ‘hiccups’ but as long as the customers are safe and happy that’s all that matters to me. What has been the most rewarding aspect? Hearing and seeing the excitement from potential customers when they find out about ASL and what we’re planning to offer. We’re doing this for them and their response is the best motivation ever.

Every day is a fun day with these wonderful people. Their zest for life is something we could all learn from. Anything else you’d like to add? If you know of anyone that would enjoy the Summer club or day opportunity, please tell them about us and ask them to get in touch. I also run a disco the last Saturday of every month at The David Livingstone club in Potter Street. Anyone is welcome to come along with their parents or carers. The entry price is £5 parents/carers go free and the entry price includes all food and drink. Our DJ Marc is fantastic!! Unfortunately no children, just 16 and above.
Are you the only employee? At the moment, it’s just myself and one other employee plus a group of trained volunteers. Do you hope to expand your business? For the moment no, I am happy to concentrate on getting it right and making sure the customers have a fun, productive day socialising and feeling good about themselves. What do you like most about being selfemployed? As the business owner I am able to ensure that my vision of a choice-based, flexible service is core to everything that we do. This means that our customers will always have a choice of how they want to spend their time with us. So, my

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING SALMON AND BROCCOLI QUICHE 250g shortcrust pastry 300g salmon fillets 200g small broccoli florets 4 large eggs 250ml double cream 100ml milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper
A
50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated
AND BROCCOLI.
RICH AND CREAMY QUICHE PACKED
FULL OF SUCCULENT SALMON FLAKES
SERVE
WARM OR COLD
WITH A CRISP GREEN LEAF SALAD.
1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/ Gas 5. 3. Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender. 4. Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold. TIP: Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture.

mark hall academy The Answer to a Mock Exam Creative Writing
The piece below was written by one of our year 10 students; it was a response from a mock exam question. This piece of work is exemplary and really shows the skills of his creative writing. Additionally, this was the first time Alex had come across this question too. As he gazed lovingly into her eyes, she paused for a second; she could not find it within her to look at him the same way. As he began to realise she no longer felt like she had in the past, while losing hope, the weather started to turn. It was as if the Gods had shot against them, thundering with rage… But there was still a morsel of hope, for the grass was still bathing in what was left of the afternoon sunlight. The leaves on the trees upon the humble hilltop still whistled with delight as the western winds came to play. And he still loved her as he always had done, despite her not loving him back. As the cold, damp air began its invasion, he stopped looking at her, for the pain was becoming too great. Instead he looked –
less lovingly than before – at the hilltops that formed the valley. He wondered if the hills ever argued, for the earthquakes that had once been here left as quickly as they came. He wondered if the hills ever loved, for they were sitting very close to one another. He envied the hills, for they were modest and quiet in their beauty, unlike the loud, boastful poison of love that was swimming through his heart. “Why does it have to be this way?” he whispered, interrupting the wind’s harsh soliloquy. Sunlight was a rare blessing now, for the rain was almost upon them. In his heart however, it had been raining for what felt like years now; he had started to hate his own feelings. He considered himself a fool for letting love’s army disturb his peaceful conscience. Like a finger pressed tightly against the trigger he hesitated, before letting out a loud, high pitched wail of despair. What had love done to him? Who had he become? By Alexander Fox Year 10

Athletics Review 2016
We have competed in several athletics events this summer with the Year 7 & 8 teams competing in the prestigious ESAA Track & Field Cup. We came up against some really strong teams from the Southend area (the strongest area for athletics in the country). There were some noticeable performances on the track with Jessica Adelaja running 100m in 14.00, Savannah Sirkett (800m- 2mins40) and Charlotte Pratt (1500m-5mins21). The teams represented the academy with great maturity and were a real credit to themselves as well as our Year 10 Sports Leaders who were magnificent in helping run the event on the day. We have taken part in the Harlow Schools League and again performed well. These performance transferred to the Harlow Schools Championships held here at Mark Hall and we came 2nd place overall. We have the following students who are now Harlow schools champions: Matthew Roke-Lewis Discus Kledaj Gjedaj Discus Delong Yang Discus Alfie Knight Triple Jump Mate Balog High Jump
Allan George 75m Hurdles Mackenzie Cranfield 800m & 1500m Todor Okufor 100m & 200m Nathan Hodgson Long Jump Savannah Sirkett 800m Charlotte Pratt 1500m Jamie Putt 800m & 1500m Declan Watson Javelin Laura Lewis Shot Putt Finally we have had some students who have represented Harlow & West Essex at the recent Essex Schools Championships. Once again they competed with pride and we are very proud of their achievements. Year 7 Jessica Adelaja Mackenzie Cranfield Ellen Savidge Katie Brennan Gregor Collie Bryce Shibchurn Zak Martin Jack Duckmanton Year 8 Charlotte Pratt Year 9 Jamie Putt We are proud of every student that has represented the Academy this academic year and will continue to keep you updated with our achievements in the future!
