WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The september edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

A very compact and bijou editor’s note this month. To coin a phrase from one of my fav children’s authors, it was a bit of a “Squash and a Squeeze” trying to fit everything into this edition! It’s all good though, I’m sure you won’t mind my reduced wittering’s for one edition... Just had so much local content which was date critical that I didn’t want you to miss out on. I think I’ve managed to accommodate everyone and I sincerely thank you all for getting in touch to share your events. Please do keep them coming! At the same time please don’t forget to support your local businesses by using their services as and when you can. Without them advertising, I would not be able to share everything that I do - and to use another quote, this time from a local organisation, “We had so much more interest in our event after you publicised it for us, that’s why we want to do it again...” Comments like that add a little sparkle to my world, thank you! Until next month,

Lorraine

ADVERTISING FEATURE

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, I’m delighted to announce that I recently hired my 4th apprentice, Owen, who will be starting in my Parliamentary office at the beginning of September. Everywhere I go, I meet and speak with small businesses, of which more and more are hiring apprentices. It’s amazing that there have been over 4,100 apprenticeship starts in Harlow since 2010. We need to continue to get more young people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds into apprenticeships. That is why as your MP I’ve always campaigned hard for apprenticeships. I started an apprenticeship academy in Parliament, worked with the NUS to ensure apprentices get a student card too and I was pleased to be the first ever MP to employ an apprentice. I was delighted to have brought former Prime Mister, David Cameron, to visit the College and UTC in our town to see what great work Harlow

Robert with David Cameron at Harlow College

As the new Apprenticeships and Skills Minister, I have been working on a special new Apprenticeship Levy. This is money that large employers will pay to help finance millions of apprentices in Harlow and across the country. The government has proposed that employers that are too small to pay the levy - around 98% of employers in Harlow and the rest of the country - will have 90% of the costs of training paid for by the government, reassuring millions of small businesses. Extra support - worth £2,000 per trainee - will also be available for employers and training providers that take on 16 to 18-year-old apprentices or young care leavers. Employers with fewer than 50 employees will also have 100% of training costs paid for by government if they take on these apprentices. This will help to ensure every young person, regardless of background or ability, has the chance to make their first step into work. The full details of these proposals will be confirmed later in the year, but the aim is to give an even bigger push for apprenticeships in our country.

Robert with his new apprentice, Owen

is doing to support vocational training for young people. There are also some amazing companies in Harlow like Luna Logistics and Robert Stuart Ltd that are doing a great job with apprenticeships too.

I’m passionate about apprenticeships because they give our young people a ladder of opportunity and help disadvantaged young people get into work. Working with big and small businesses across our town, I know that we can bang the drum for apprenticeships and really transform the lives of our next generation. Best wishes, Robert

community choir CL Voices invite you to join them in their 3rd season Following on from its tremendously popular first year, Church Langley Voices starts its 3rd season of singing for fun on Tuesday 20th September. We had huge interest at our startup a year ago. Most of those singers are still with us, enjoying special arrangements of songs, both well known and not so well known, created by our two Musical Directors, Mary Norkett and Lis Scott. We meet to practice in Potter Street Baptist Church on Tuesdays at 7.30pm, and the season ends with an early pre-Christmas concert in November for invited guests only. The choir is intended primarily for Church Langley residents, or those with local connections. There’s no audition, no need to read music, and the music is arranged to suit the abilities of the singers: if you’d like to

A large proportion of the children we are seeking families for are teenagers. The teenage years can be extremely difficult. I am sure you remember what it was like to be a teenager. You feel like you are the only one, like no one else understands and are often hounded by feelings of insecurity. Imagine how much worse this would be if you could not live with your family. How would you feel? At this critical time in their lives these young adults need guidance, support and understanding, to help them not to get involved in bad behaviours and lifestyles.

LOCALs in business Local ‘Harlow Girl’ Amanda Egan found herself at a crossroads in her life after she became a Mum, not willing to return to a full time job and sacrifice seeing her son grow up she sought a different way of working...

Why did you decide to start your own business? As soon as I had Alfie I just knew that I wanted to be a ‘Stay at Home Mum’, the only problem was that I knew I couldn’t afford to do that! Quite by accident I met someone who introduced me to a naturally based range of Health & Wellness products and I fell in love with them and I still use them everyday. I was then offered an opportunity build my own business working alongside the company that made these products - I looked into it and just couldn’t fault it; you work under the umbrella of a Global Health & Wellness company, they provide full training and support as I’d never had my own business before, they are a family run, privately owned 40 year old company that operates in over 150 countries around the world, there was no risk at all unlike starting your own business from scratch. Better still its an uncapped income so if you want to work a few hours you can, if you want to work full time hours you can, you decide your level of income. How has your life changed since you’ve started your business? I have a lifestyle today that I used to believe was impossible! I work the hours I choose and with the people that I want to work with. I am a full time mum and never miss anything that is going on in my son’s life - I’m at every event! I’m a Marathon runner, I take at least 4 international holidays a year - two of which are completely free! Most of all I feel valued by the company that I work alongside in a way that

I never felt when I had a job. They reward you in fantastic ways for building your business, so much so that I have literally travelled the world in the last 5 years, all paid for 5* Holidays that I have been able to take my family on too. I get to drive the car of my dreams - all paid for as an incentive! I get an annual bonus and this year it was higher than some people earn a year for a part time job, I’m totally my own boss but with support and training as I need it and I’ve built a business that turns over more than £2,000,000 per year! What would you say to anyone who is in the same position as your were? For me it’s really simple - if you keep doing what you’ve always done you will get what you’ve always got! I would say if you are happy with your lifestyle that’s great but if you’re tired of juggling childcare whilst working a full time job, struggling with the school holidays, want to earn what you feel you’re worth instead of what someone is prepared to pay you then give me a call or drop me an email and I will talk you through how it all works to see if its for you!

harlow running club harlow 10 You’ve no doubt seen the familiar blue and red vests around Harlow come rain, shine, and other various weather systems - they’re the Harlow Running Club who get together to train and socialise in and around the town, and are based at Mark Hall Sportcentre. The club has hosted an annual 10-mile race for more than 20 years which attracts fans from far and wide who enjoy the atmosphere and challenge of the event. This year, the club is hoping more Harlow residents than ever will support their local club and raise funds for two charities at the same time. Club chairman Dave Page explains: “It’s an undulating, at times picturesque route, taking in Church Langley, Foster Street, Hastingwood, Potter Street, and Mark Hall.” “As well as some very committed members, we are very lucky to have the support of the community who help us put on a safe race - including the Sea Cadets and qualified local first aiders, to a Puffers Green family who help with the set up of the all-important sponge water station, and volunteers from the charities we support.”

Held on September 4th, the race will be manned by club members and their family and friends, and participants are known to come from as far afield as west London. gibberd gallery exhibition watercolour collection celbration

We will be re-hanging and curating the Sir Frederick Gibberd 20th Century Permanent Watercolour collection which has had new conservation glass applied to the original frames. This will help to maintain the artworks for many years to come ensuring the legacy of the collection can live on in Harlow. Also, with money raised by the Friends of Harlow Sculpture Collection and the Gibberd Gallery, new labels have been purchased with research put into updating the information on the labels to include dates and extended medium information. We are opening on Saturday 17th September to celebrate the collections conservation and rehang from 11am - 2pm. Study No 321 for ‘The Origins of the Land’, Graham Sutherland, 1950

lunch time recital at the arc violin with dance

St John’s ARC are proud to present an unusual lunchtime recital. On Friday 30th September at 1.30pm, they will host a poignant and moving performance by two celebrated artists. There will be a prologue and performance, followed by questions and answers. Takane Funatsu Born in Japan, Takane started playing the violin at the age of four. She won the Murcia International Violin Competition in Spain, later leading the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. On moving to London, Takane studied at the Guildhall School of Music with David Takeno. Her talent was quickly realised enabling her to play as a soloist with many orchestras. Takane’s playing features in the Harry Potter films, BBC’s Bleak House and even the mobile game Angry Birds! She enjoys giving concerts to raise money for local charities, visiting schools and nurseries. - Having been in a principal position with Scottish Chamber Orchestra for three years, she went on to become a guest principal player in many leading London orchestras, touring worldwide. Gillian Winn As a young dancer, Gill was a gold medallist winner for two consecutive years at the ‘Adelina Patti Competition’ in Wales. So, the judges encouraged Gill’s parents to send her to ballet school. Gaining a scholarship to the world renowned Elmhurst Ballet School, Gill won the Sylphide

Cup in the graduate solo competition. She was then offered a contract in Germany at the young age of sixteen, where she was known as ‘baby of the ballet’. Progressing to Roland Petit’s ground breaking company Ballet de Marseille, Gill then became a soloist with Vienna Festival Ballet, London Ballet Theatre and Ballet Classique de Paris. Some notable roles she danced are: Princess Florine in Bluebird, Polyhymnia in Apollo, Carabosse and Lilac Fairy in Sleeping Beauty, the Prelude in Les Sylphides and Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker. Gill has also worked extensively in opera, film and television, dancing in films such as ‘Shakespeare in Love’, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, ‘European Vacation’, the BBC film Verdi and the series ‘Bluebell’.

IT’s your community

Hatfield Heath bridge Club our bridge players have a busy social life We are very lucky there is a thriving bridge community in our area. There are U3A groups in Harlow, Sawbridgeworth, Thorley and Bishops Stortford and clubs that cater for all standards on each weekday and on some Sundays. You need never be lonely or stuck for something to do if you can play bridge.

Anyone can learn to play bridge. No prior knowledge is necessary. You don’t need a partner, a degree in mathematics or a photographic memory though it is helpful if you can count! The most important part is to want to learn something new and being open to the idea of meeting new people and making friends.

Hatfield Heath Bridge Club has been running classes since 2007 and in that time our membership has increased considerably and so has that of all the other local clubs. We now have our main club running every Wednesday evening with a separate section for newer players. Of course not everyone finds Wednesday evenings convenient but there are clubs that meet on Monday evenings, Tuesday afternoons & Thursday and Friday evenings.

The new session of classes starts on 19th September and further information can be obtained from Penny and Brian at hassells2@gmail.com or 01279 721428.

Not all bridge is played in organised sessions. Friends made in bridge classes often get together for a social game at home with a cup of tea and some cake or even supper and wine.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING COD, PRAWN AND PARSLEY PIE 1.6kg floury potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 750g cod fillet 1L milk 1 bay leaf Few black peppercorns 75g butter 50g plain flour 3 tbsp freshly chopped parsley

COD

175g frozen peas, thawed 225g large peeled prawns, thawed if frozen 15ml olive oil Sprig of fresh parsley, to garnish

AND PRAWNS IN A SMOOTH HERBY WHITE SAUCE TOPPED WITH FLUFFY MASH – IT’S THE ULTIMATE FISH PIE!

1. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. 2. Meanwhile, place the cod in a large frying pan and pour over the milk. Add the bay leaf and peppercorns and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes then remove from the heat. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cod from the pan and set aside. Strain the milk into a large heatproof jug. 3. Melt 50g of the butter in a medium saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 850ml of the milk. Bring to the boil, stirring all the time, then simmer for 3-4 minutes until you have a smooth, thick sauce. 4. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6. Flake the fish, discarding any skin and bones, and stir into the sauce with the parsley, peas and prawns. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Transfer the mixture to a deep ovenproof dish. 5. Mash the potatoes with the rest of the butter and milk and season to taste. Spoon the mash over the fish mixture to cover. Drizzle over the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with a sprig of parsley. TIP: You can use any white fish fillet for this pie - haddock or coley will work just as well. Alternatively, replace half the cod with salmon fillet or smoked haddock, if liked.
