WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The october edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

I know it’s still early and we have several months until Christmas but... As we’re starting to get our first festive advertisements, I’m hoping you will forgive me for planting a little seed with you now... I wanted to remind you to please, when you can, “support local” on the run up to Christmas - think about the kitchen table businesses that could supply those unique gifts, cards or Christmas puddings... Think about the local trades that could help put your external lights up, tidy the garden and clean your windows/carpets/ovens in readiness for the festive season. Go to see the local panto, play or Christmas fair - better still buy tickets as gifts! Get dressed up, buy a new outfit, pamper yourself... it goes on. I’m in no doubt that most of us do this already without realising just how important it is. It starts and ends with us and together we can make a huge difference to our local economy and community, let’s do this CM17’ers! Until next time, Lorraine PS Don’t forget the clocks “fall” back on Sunday 30th October at 2AM!

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, I hope you have all had a lovely summer! I have been working hard with my new job as Skills and Apprenticeships Minister and doing lots of important community work in Harlow.

comfy new seat! Thanks to the many people who have given every possible support and sponsorship to help the beautiful Theatre with its restoration work.

Last week, I went on a blindfolded bus ride with the Guide Dogs charity around the town to raise awareness of the difficulties that those with visual impairments face in their everyday lives. It was a pleasure to meet with Harlow residents who have been helped by this fantastic charity or who were volunteering their time to help train Guide Dog puppies! I am campaigning to make public transport more accessible for those with disabilities, particularly to try and get audio announcements on buses like they have them on trains.

Robert with some of the seat sponsors at Victoria Hall Theatre

Robert with The Guide Dog charity

After sponsoring one of their chairs earlier in the year, I was honoured to be invited to Victoria Hall Theatre to be amongst the first to see their brand new seating. I went to see their Christmas show this year which was brilliant and I hope to visit again soon, now with a

I am also working hard on organising my 5th Annual Harlow Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair. This year, it will be held Friday 21st October at the Harlow Leisurezone from 10am-4pm. We have lots of great exhibitors signed up already, including: Stansted Airport, Public Health England, Harlow College, Anglia Ruskin University, Princess Alexandra Hospital and BBC Essex. There are still a few places left if your business organisation would like to exhibit, just drop me an email at halfon4harlow@roberthalfon. com and we can sign you up. If you have any questions about coming along and looking for a job or apprenticeship opportunity, please feel free to get in touch with me too. I hope to see lots of you there! IT’s your community

the centre of wellbeing do you have mental health? by Claire evans Hopefully, you have answered yes to this because we all do have mental health!

own way of expressing yourself which, in turn, will connect you with your own wellbeing.

The challenge we have, however, is talking about mental health because of the many negative meanings and connotations around the word ‘mental’.

The Centre of Wellbeing in Sawbridgeworth is creating a community hub to embrace and acknowledge mental health challenges and diagnoses and encourage open conversations around these subjects. However, the founder and all its members feel it’s time to celebrate mental health and to shift focus towards emotional intelligence and the self-management of wellbeing.

We’re all guilty of having used this term, in some form, as an insult or a self deprecation and that’s, unfortunately, due to the way in which society and our culture have influenced us. However, my philosophy in life is to acknowledge that negative attitudes exist towards mental health and then to continue to focus on more beneficial things such as wellbeing. Wellbeing is simply an all-encompassing term for that feeling when we feel contentment on every level. Contentment being a state of acceptance of things as they are, even when they are not always as we’d like! So the question is more around what would bring your focus towards wellbeing? What answers come to you when you reflect on the statement: ‘I feel better when I am…’ ?

Claire Evans, founder of The Centre of Wellbeing, is bringing together a number of speakers, alternative & complementary therapists and charities to a collaborative event on World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2016, 12-2pm – see poster for details. Please attend this FREE event and afford yourself the opportunity to experience how you may be able to better manage your mental health and wellbeing.

rethinkyourmind is a project that is centred around this theme, it encourages everyone to enter art, poetry or photography submissions that express the reflections. The beauty of this expression is that it comes from our creativity, not our mind, and it brings with it a feeling of contentment and wellbeing. It might be that you do not feel you can express yourself in these formats but you’ll likely enjoy encouraging others, discussing your ideas and enjoying the diversity of creations submitted. And potentially, you will be led down a path to your

local business people in person Name and Business Robyn Tennison and I run Tennison Fitness. Where do you live? I was born in Harlow and have lived here all my life. I briefly left to go to Southampton University but came back here. What’s your favourite local shop? You will always find me in Holland & Barrett. I’m constantly buying new health foods - I think I have a food addiction! What’s your favourite local venue? Before university I would spend most weekends at The Square. It’s a great place for young people to socialise. I also love Paringdon Sports & Social Club (where I personal train from!). What do you like best about Harlow? The town park is my absolute favourite place. What do you like doing when you’re not working? If I’m not working I tend to train myself, head down to the gym or out for a run. I’m so busy that any time off

is a blessing so spending quality time with the people I love in number 1! I set up my business because... I have a passion for helping people become fit and healthy regardless of their age or ability. I love learning about the human body, injuries and rehabilitation. Having a client come to you with a mobility issue and being able to resolve it is the most gratifying feeling. I always say it’s not about being the fittest person around it’s about becoming the best version of yourself! What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? I recently secured a job with the NHS working as a fitness instructor on the mental health unit. It’s one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had using exercise to aid the patients’ recovery or being involved in the care plans for those with long term degenerative mental illnesses.

LOCALs that relaunch After the devastating fire that destroyed The CRystal Palace restaurant in January 2016, Sam MAn is back in the Old town with his new restaurant and takeaway the Golden Dragon...

When did Golden Dragon open? We reopened on 10th August 2016. Why did you change the name? The Golden Dragon name has always been part of the Crystal Palace Chinese restaurant and the first restaurant I opened nearly forty years ago with my father was called the Golden Dragon. Where did you qualify/study? I went to Latton Bush comprehensive school here in Harlow and after finishing there in 1979, I went to work in my father’s restaurant in Holland. I returned to England in 1985 to help at my mothers take away - Golden Dragon, in Hoddesdon. Experience in the business? I spent 5 years in Holland learning the restaurant trade and then a further 4 years working in Hoddesdon. In 1989 I opened my first restaurant in Stansted and the following year the Crystal Palace in Old Harlow. What made you decide to set up your own business? My mum and dad were both in the restaurant business so it made sense that I would follow. By chance I met the landlord of my mother’s takeaway and asked him if he wanted to sell the freehold, within a month I had secured a loan and bought the freehold. Ever since that day I have been hooked in Business! What has been the most valuable lesson? Family always comes first.

What hurdles have you faced? I have had my ups and downs in business but have always learned from the challenges that I’ve faced. What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? The hardest thing is not being complacent and that initially you must always be there, oh, and never take anything for granted. What has been the most rewarding aspect? I have recently opened a Karaoke Bar in Chelmsford and to see my customers’ happy faces and be thanked by them at the end of the night is the best reward. What do you like most about being self-employed? Being self employed is good as you are your own Boss and no one tells you what to do but saying that my wife Kitty is the real Boss! Any funny stories from your working life that you’d like to share with us? Not necessarily a funny story but I manage to get a laugh from my customers every week! In my Karaoke bar in Chelmsford I introduce my staff to them, “This is Jennifer, my daughter and this is Kitty, my wife and this is Mr Richard Chan Ho also known as Mr R C Ho...”. This never fails to make people smile. Is there anything that you would like to add? I’d just like to thank everyone that sent their best wishes after the fire, it really helped the whole family and kept us going through the dark times. Your support throughout and with the opening of our new restaurant has been overwhelming and amazing, thank you.

IT’s your community

Harlow branch essex society for Family history Are you curious about your antecedents and would like to find out more about your great grandparents, what they did and where they came from? Are you fascinated by the history of the wider area around Harlow and the county of Essex generally? If this is the case, you might be interested in the meetings of the Harlow branch of the Essex Society for Family History. We are a long established and friendly group, who in meet at St. John’s ARC in Old Harlow, at 2.30pm on the first Saturday of every month. At each meeting we have a talk on some aspect of family or community history, followed by a break for tea and biscuits and then a question and answer session with the speaker. It costs £1.50 for non members but, of course, it is cheaper to join the Essex

Society for Family History for a year when entrance will be free. There is also a group that meets at the same venue on every other Wednesday from 8pm to 10.00pm. This is a self help group for those who wish to research their personal family history which is led by experienced family historians. For the dates of these meetings you can e-mail Elizabeth Cox on emt.cox2@btinternet. com, or look at the West Essex Society for family history information on Facebook.

pole train fitness Charity showcase Every year we look to run at least one show where our students have the opportunity to demonstrate (and show off!) what they have learnt to friends and family. This years show takes place on Sunday 16th October, 1pm at Potter Street Community Centre. We will have approximately 10 of our students performing routines on Pole, Pole Silks and Aerial Hoop - highlighting their skill and grace, showing people what its all about. We like to use our show as an opportunity to do something for charity too. In previous events we have raised money for Young Essex Stroke Association and Tourettes Action. This year we are keen to give something back to our local community and will be running our charity raffle to support Harlow based PACT for Autism. Local mum and volunteer at PACT, Debbie Alexander, will be there on the day to talk to us about the charity and how they use the donations they receive. Everyone is welcome to the Showcase where you can purchase your raffle tickets in support of PACT for Autism or, to purchase raffle tickets before the day, contact us (details below).

We need your help! We are calling on local businesses to help us support this local charity by donating raffle prizes. If you would like to help please contact Faye (details at bottom of page). Thank you!

Harlow Chorus Unexpected changes leading up to Christmas Words by Mick Rumens

On our return to concert rehearsals for the new season we had the unexpected news that, for personal reasons, our Musical Director, Alex Chaplin, needed to take a complete and extended break from all of his choral and teaching responsibilities until the new year. To cover the period while Alex is away, we are very happy to welcome Stephen Jackson as our acting Musical Director. Stephen is well known to many through his work for many years with the BBC Symphony Chorus. Born in Croydon, Stephen was a chorister at Westminster Abbey and later read music at Clare College, Cambridge. After a few years as a professional bassoonist in the 1970’s, he turned to singing and, eventually, conducting and choir training. For 26 years he directed the BBC Symphony Chorus, preparing a huge repertoire for many of the worlds principal conductors, among them Boulez, Haitink, Salonen, Rattle, Colin Davis and Andrew Davis. Stephen frequently conducted the Symphony Chorus himself, in the concert

hall, on tour, on air and on disc. In addition to countless choral/orchestral premieres for which he was responsible, he himself directed first performances of works by Mark-Anthony Tumage, Robert Rodney Bennett, Judith Bingham, Henry Gorecki, Stephen Montague and other composers, any especially written for him. Now freelance, Stephen continues to tour worldwide as conductor, teacher and adjudicator. He directs the Chamber Choir of Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London and is a member of the education panel of the Association of British Choral Directors. As a composer and arranger, he is published by Novello and Boosey & Hawkes. From his first introduction to Harlow Chorus he has established a comfortable, friendly, but workmanlike rapport with all our members, as I’m sure he will with our audience. The absence of Alex will necessitate a slight change to our first concert programme, which I shall advise in next months article.

Add all the spices to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the sweet potatoes, the passata and 150ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potato is tender and the sauce has thickened. 3. Stir in the chick peas and garam masala and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer for a further few minutes. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped coriander.
