WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The november edition of the cm17 connection Arghhhhhhh I can’t believe it’s November already! Of course I KNOW it’s November as it’s been decidedly chillier of late plus this month’s edition would be wrong! But it means there’s just two months to Christmas... and I’m not ready!! I thought I was being clever - making sneaky notes when something was admired, buying bits and bobs through out the year... and, to be kind to myself, it has helped but I cannot tell you how my stomach lurched when I typed in November! Ye gads! I feel the need to panic buy... OK, I’ve just given myself a mental slap round the face - I need to calm down. No need to panic buy just yet! Two months is a long time... and breath... it’s 8 weekends... and breath... it’ll be fine. OK. Normal service is resumed. Thank goodness everyone else seems to be prepared. We have a whopping 4 pages of community events this month, there are lots of things going on locally, with some wonderful concerts of Remembrance at the beginning of the month. Harlow Lions Victorian Fair will end the month but just before that, and to start off the Christmas festivities proper, Old Harlow Traders and Baptist Church will be having their grand Christmas lights switch on which will be on Thursday 24th November from 5pm, get down there if you can! Until next month, Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, I have seen first-hand that the staff and the management team at Princess Alexandra Hospital work incredibly hard and do an amazing job for Harlow residents. As MP, I get many emails and letters from residents who have had an excellent and caring service from the staff at our hospital. It is important to note, that despite its difficulties, the hospital has several areas of outstanding practice, such as their maternity unit, cancer diagnosis and treatment targets and the children’s ward. The report also states that staff in every area of the hospital are rated Good or Outstanding for their level of patient care. However, clearly there are significant difficulties that the management team, nurses, doctors and other staff are working hard to overcome. There are four major problems that the hospital faces: 1. It has more A&E admissions per head than almost anywhere in the country. The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust has seen 21,919 more patients in 2015/16 than in did in 2009/10, a 27.14% increase over the 5 years. 2. The age of the building means that parts of it are not fit-for-purpose and it needs constant financial assistance just to keep going. Although the Government have given Princess Alexandra Hospital £48.8million extra of capital investment for this since 2010, this is an ongoing problem. 3. The long term future of the hospital needs to be looked at. It needs to be decided whether a new hospital should be built. 4. Recruitment is a massive challenge because of Harlow’s position in close proximity to London and Cambridge. The hospital spends a lot of money on recruitment, but there is still a 50% nurse vacancy rate in some wards, which means that agency nurses have to be brought in. The Government is investing in our hospital. Their budget for care this year is £200 million, which is

an increase from the previous year. There is an additional £8 million budget this year for capital investment, £4 million of this is creating an extra 35 beds for patients. On top of this, since 2010, there has been an upgraded eye clinic, a new kidney dialysis unit, a children’s A&E centre and an upgraded maternity unit. This year, Princess Alexandra Hospital is also receiving an extra £800,000 to cover increased pressure on A&E over the winter. While the hospital has an ongoing budget deficit, the Government covers this. Nevertheless, there is always a need for more funding, which, of course, I will continue to work hard to secure from the Government. Nationally, the Government is spending an additional £10 billion a year in real terms on the NHS, the amount that NHS England requested. This money will allow the NHS to offer 800,000 more operations and treatments and spend £2 billion more on new drugs. The Government has already delivered an extra 10,000 doctors since 2010 and it is committed to increasing the staff available to the NHS by 80,000 by 2020. I have been working hard with the chief executive of our hospital to help solve the problems they face. We had a recent meeting with the Health Secretary and key health officials and I have also had discussions, including one last night, with the Hospitals Minister, Phillip Dunne MP, who has pledged to visit the hospital in the near future. I will always stand up for Princess Alexandra Hospital, it’s incredibly hard working staff and, of course, the many patients that are looked after there. I will continue to work with all relevant parties to make sure that we get the best possible outcome for Harlow and our hospital. Best wishes, Robert

local business people

Special feature

in person Name and Business Marta Sturt and my business is Prestige Language School. Where do you live? I’m originally from Poland but I’ve lived in the UK for 13 years. We’ve lived here in Newhall for 8 years now. What’s your favourite local shop? You might be surprised, but my favourite shop is our local – Newhall Food Store! I value the fact that the owners of the store take time to get to know me and my family. What’s your favourite local venue? My favourite venue is the Wings Café at North Weald, which is just outside of Harlow. We have two young children who love spending time outdoors. What do you like best about Harlow? I love the fact that Harlow is multicultural. You’re bound to hear a language other than English when you’re out and about. I feel at home here even though I wasn’t born in this country What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love spending time outdoors with my family; we go out

on our bikes a lot exploring the neighbourhood. I set up my business because... Having experienced it myself, I know how hard it is to live in a foreign country when you don’t know the lingo. I want to support people who have moved over to the UK and are seeking a better life here. Seeing my students breaking the barrier of not being able to speak in English is the best feeling. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? Undoubtedly the expansion of our school. Having run Prestige Language School in Harlow for three years, I finally plucked up the courage to open a new branch in Bishop’s Stortford. It takes years to establish a good name for your business, but the success of our Harlow branch has made expanding easier than I anticipated. It has not been plain sailing but I can see a bright future ahead for us.

harlow civic society launches

Trophies created by local artists Ewa Wawrzyniak and Jon Lewis

The harlow architectural Awards 2016 This new competition will celebrate the very best in local building design, and encourage a higher standard of architecture for future developments in Harlow. Organised by the Harlow Civic Society and sponsored by Places for People Group, the Harlow Architectural Design Awards are split into two categories – to recognise the best in Residential and Commercial building in the town. Members of the public have been invited to submit their nominations for both categories and a shortlist of nominated buildings was announced late October. Throughout November, the public will be able to vote for their favourite entries, with an expert panel making a final decision on the winner in January 2017. Harlow was designated a New Town shortly after World War II, to meet the huge demand for housing in the South East following the devastation caused in London by the Blitz. The original masterplan for the town, drawn up by Sir Frederick Gibberd in 1947, included an abundance of green spaces, an extensive cycle route network, and cutting-edge building design from some of the most recognised architects of the post-war era. As a result, Harlow became a truly novel town; home to the first pedestrian precinct, the first modern-style residential tower block, and the first purpose-built health centre in Great Britain. Harlow Civic Society was founded in 1999 to appreciate, encourage and conserve Harlow as a balanced community with a unique architectural

design and heritage. This year, the organisation has launched the Harlow Architectural Design Awards, sponsored by Places for People Group. The awards have been launched to recognise the very best in Harlow’s existing architecture, as well as encouraging excellence in the design of Harlow’s development over the coming years. Each year, one residential and one non-residential building, completed in the preceding 12 months, will be selected by an expert judging panel, following a public vote. As 2016 sees the launch of the awards, any building in the new town era (1947 to present) will be considered. A trophy for the winner in each category has been commissioned from local artists at Parndon Mill, Harlow’s creative hub. Winners will also receive a certificate and optional plaque for their building. Can you help? It is our intention to run these awards annually for at least the next ten years. This will depend on further funding and support from like-minded people and organisations within the town. To join our team and help shape the future of these awards, please contact Paul McLintic on paul@ mclintic.com

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

AUTUMN FENS This day trip to Cambridgeshire starts with a ride on the world’s longest guided busway to a watery nature reserve and ends with tea in the picturesque market town of St Ives. Catch bus A, B or C from stop 9 outside Cambridge railway station and get off at Fen Drayton Lakes. Walk back towards Cambridge a few meters and turn left along lane. Look out, around dusk, for huge flocks (murmurations) of starlings. Keep straight, with lakes behind hedges on either side, until you reach River Great Ouse. Turn left and walk for two miles with water on right, emerging eventually onto a concrete lane. Turn left, then right on road and right again into Jones Boatyard. Walk clockwise around marina until you reach bridge with steps. Turn left and left again through wooden gate. Follow path under main road and walk along embankment beyond to road. Turn right over picturesque bridge to find River Tearooms in an old, half-timbered house. The bus station, to return to Cambridge, is straight on along Bridge Street and then right along Crown Street. LOCATION: Fen Drayton Distance: About 3 miles refreshments:

fiddlers brook morris

looking for something different to do? why not try morris dancing? Fiddlers Brook Morris was formed in 1987, dancing out for the first time in 1988 at the Queens Head, Allens Green. Our dances come mainly from the mill towns of the north west of England, some of which we have invented ourselves, with a few from the borders of England and Wales. We perform our dances in clogs and bright costumes of turquoise, gold and black. Our main dancing seasons are spring and summer when we perform in public whenever we can, especially at local pubs on Tuesday evenings. We have also spent weekends away at festivals in Scarborough, Littleborough, Wimborne and Chippenham, and have danced at local spots as diverse as Hatfield House and Stansted Airport. You may have seen us dancing at the Sawbridgeworth May Fair and thought you might like to have a go.

harlow celebrating our 2nd birthday By Vicky Calver

Harlow parkrun is a free, 5km timed event, which takes place every Saturday morning (and Sunday for junior runners aged 4-14). All you need to do is register, print the barcode issued specially to you and bring it with you. Participants can run, jog or walk the course which is fully sign posted and marshalled and is run entirely by volunteers.

Harlow parkrun started on 8th November 2014 and will therefore be celebrating its 2nd birthday on Saturday 12th November. The course will be the usual route and due to it being close to Halloween (which is an optional fancy dress event!) we will not be doing a fancy dress theme for the birthday event. We do however have awards to give out and would therefore ask everyone to arrive promptly so we can start the awards at 8.40am. The run will start at 9am as usual and we are hoping Spurriers cafe will be open so we can all have coffee and bacon sandwiches after the run (the cafe is located opposite the bandstand). We would also invite anyone willing to bring some cakes or biscuits by way of celebrating the fact it is our birthday. As we cannot control the weather, if anyone has a spare gazebo they could bring along so we can ensure as many people, the awards and the cakes stay dry if it rains. We are asking regular runners to nominate their “volunteer of the year” and “parkrunner of the year”.

Volunteer of the year - who has stood out to you / been the most encouraging / deserves the recognition for their contribution to parkrun? If you do not know their name - email us and describe the person to us and we are bound to know who you mean... or sneakily found out their name in the next couple of weeks to ensure you nominate the right person. parkrunner of the year - which parkrunner has gone the extra mile (no pun intended)? Maybe they have paced you unofficially to get a new PB, maybe they always come back to run with you, maybe you just try your best to keep up with them without them even knowing... maybe you are inspired by them for what they have achieved... for some people just finishing the course is a challenge! Do you think it deserves to be someone who had run and volunteered in equal measure? Whatever your reason, just nominate. Please provide first and last name where possible and your reason for nominating them! Whilst we do appreciate that some people may wish to nominate the core team - we are not included in these awards so PLEASE use your vote for someone eligible. Your vote must be in by Saturday 5th November for it to count. The email for voting is harlowoffice@parkrun.com

Venture Into Volunteering Volunteers Needed! Come and support your local theatre. The Harlow Playhouse is always on the lookout for volunteers who wish to join their team of dedicated Ushers. Ushering is a pleasant and enjoyable way to become involved and can be a weekly or monthly occurrence depending on your availability. Volunteer befrienders are welcomed to support a person with mental health issues wishing to improve their lives. You could meet someone for a coffee, chat with someone on the phone, go swimming, shopping etc, your time and company will be much appreciated. Are you good in the kitchen? The Harlow branch of the Salvation Army would welcome a couple of volunteers to cook meals for their popular luncheon club. A few hours before and over lunchtime would be the commitment needed and there are already volunteers to help prepare veg, serve, tidy up etc. Do you have some free time on a Saturday? The Freshwaters Contact Centre would like to hear from volunteers keen to help with the smooth running of their scheme that enables children to maintain contact with their non resident parent, full training is provided and your commitment may only be for a few sessions per year. Healthy Minds - Happy Families is a flexible volunteering project providing 1-2-1 volunteer home support to mums-to-be and new mums (and their families) in Harlow who are going through difficult times and are at risk of developing mental health issues (in particular depression and anxiety). Volunteers will be visiting the family home on a weekly basis for a minimum of 2 hours and will provide one-to-one, emotional and practical support at home. Full training is provided for all volunteers. Interested in one of these opportunities or would you like to find out about more about volunteering? Please get in touch, thank you. Harlow Chorus November & December 2016 concerts Words by Mick Rumens

Our 41st season begins on Saturday 12th November at St Michael’s Church, Bishop’s Stortford at 7.30pm with our concert “WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM” to mark the Remembrance weekend. The Chorus will perform the works of four British composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edward Elgar, Hubert Parry and Charles Stamford. We will not be performing the commissioned piece Memorial Ground as previously suggested. Vaughan Williams ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’ will be the major item, whilst from Elgar’s ‘The Spirit of England’ we shall perform ‘The Fourth of August” and ‘For the Fallen’. There will be two Songs of Farewell by Hubert Parry ‘Never, Weather-beaten Sail’, and ‘My Soul, there is a Country’, and three Motets by Charles Stanford, ‘Justorum animae’, ‘Coelos ascendit’, and ‘Beati Quorum via’. A solemn but warm hearted commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of this momentous First World War, and the sacrifices made by men of so many countries. We will be joined by our soloists Joanna Songi, soprano, and Guy Hayward, baritone, with

Susan Graham Smith our piano accompanist, and Stephen Jackson will be our conductor. Kindly supported by Making Music’s Philip & Dorothy Green Award for Young Concert Artists scheme. Our following concert will be on Saturday 10th December 2016 at St John’s Church, Epping commencing at 4.00pm. “What child is this?” is ‘A Family Christmas Concert’ for all the family especially the children. You are warmly invited to come and enjoy an hour of lovely music with carols for choir and audience, and then join the party. Seasonal refreshments will be on offer to send you home in the Christmas spirit. Harlow Chorus will be joined by, Harlow Chorus Training Choir, and Henry Moore Primary School Choir. Accompanists will be Susan Graham Smith on piano and Simon Winters, on the organ. Our conductor will be Stephen Jackson who will put the choirs, and the audience through their paces. It is sure to be an event, full of fun and enjoyment, to get us all in the right mood for the Christmas holiday.

The Henry Moore Primary School Reading is Key At Henry Moore we believe that ‘Reading is Key’ and we encourage this from an early age. Our Reception classes have been exploring the season of autumn through stories. We have been focusing on the famous children’s story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen.

We went on a bear hunt. We caught a big one. It was beautiful. We weren’t scared!

Re-capping stories by acting them out is great way to develop language and communication skills as well as engaging children in reading. School Readiness Project The Henry Moore School promote the School Readiness Project in Harlow and will be starting its own session in the New Year. If you have a child starting school in 2017 and would be interested in attending the session please email Mrs Ferguson schoolreadiness@henrymoore.essex.sch.uk
