WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The december edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

I am a little be excited... I love this time of year, it’s not just because Christmas is almost here and I can say the C word without apologising for it - Christmas, Christmas, CHRISTMAS!! (oo - that felt good!) It’s also because I have just one more edition to go (January’s!) before I’ll be shutting up shop for two whole weeks! Yep, the answerphone will be switched on and I will be enjoying precious time with my family and friends! I cannot wait!

december 2016 ISSUE 135

Before I go, I’d like to do a few “thank-yous” if I may. To everyone that has contributed to the magazine this year - thank you for taking the time to get in touch and share your groups, charities and events. To my loyal band of advertisers, you guys rock and I am so grateful for your business. To the back office team - couldn’t do this without you, thank you. To the awesome bunch of people that are my distribution team, there is no one that could do a better job! Last but not least, thank YOU, yes you (and you too Mrs Taylor!) because by supporting this little publication you’re supporting our community and that’s pretty special isn’t it! A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, I was pleased to host Henry Moore’s School Council in Westminster recently for a tour of the Houses of Parliament. It was a pleasure to meet such bright and inquisitive students and I was very happy to answer all of their tough questions! Lots of them wanted to be MPs when they grow up so we can be assured that Harlow will be in safe hands for many years to come! Over the last year, my office have taken over 400 residents on a tour of Parliament and another 110 local students have visited me here with the Parliament Education Centre as well. If you are a constituent and would like to come in for a tour of the House of Commons, then please just email me at halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com and I’d be very pleased to arrange one for you. I was delighted to hold my 5th Annual Harlow Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair again this year. The day was a great success that saw hundreds of visitors coming to see over 60 businesses and organisations that were exhibiting. I am very grateful to Harlow College, Stansted Airport and DMG Mori for sponsoring the event and making it all possible. Harlow Jobscentre, Seetec, Ingeus and the Harlow Chamber of Commerce were also a great help in organising the day. It was a pleasure to have BBC Essex supporting the event too. They brought along the BBC Bus for visitors to find out more about a career in journalism and try out reading the weather. I had a lot of fun giving it a go myself! Other than the fantastic BBC Essex, the stand-out exhibitor had to be GU Puds who were giving out free deserts all day! They are opening a factory in Bishop’s

Robert with staff and pupils from Henry Moore School

Stortford next year and will be creating a wide range of jobs for Harlow residents. It is great news that unemployment in Harlow is continuing to fall. As of this September, the total number of unemployed claimants in Harlow was 991. This is 97 lower than in September 2015 and 16 lower than in August 2016. I’ve already had some great feedback from exhibitors who have found some brilliant new potential employees. There are lots of job and apprenticeship opportunities coming back to Harlow and I am so pleased to be able to help residents access them with my Jobs Fair each year. Best of luck to everyone who applied for a job or apprenticeship there. Another exciting event coming up for Harlow is the Stow’s Christmas Market on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th December. On the Friday it will run from 5pm - 8pm with a Christmas lights switchon at 6pm! There will be stalls, mulled wine, a live band and pampering at Tiara’s Salon. On the Saturday the Christmas Market will run from 10am - 4pm with a special visit from Mr and Mrs Santa Claus at 12noon. There will be more stalls, live music and pampering as well as hot chocolate, face painting, a photo booth and real life reindeer!! Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year! Best wishes, Robert

Mike Danvers and EUGENIE HARVEY - STANDING UP FOR the residents of CM17

We’re delighted and proud to have been selected to stand for Labour in next May’s County Council elections. Mike is hoping to be re-elected to represent Harlow North (Old Harlow and Newhall), a seat he has held for three years along with his responsibilities as Councillor for Netteswell. Eugenie is hoping to be elected to represent Harlow South East (Church Langley and Potter Street).Together we offer a combination of experience and energy as your elected representatives on Essex County Council (ECC). Over the coming months we’ll be sharing with you our vision for CM17 and what we’ll be fighting for if you trust us with your vote next May. Central to our campaign will be pothole repair and street maintenance – who doesn’t curse every time they dodge one of the deep crevasses that blight our roads and roundabouts? Essex County Councillor and Portfolio holder Eddie Johnson has so far refused any consideration to repair the Mark Hall roundabout which is in such a poor condition that it is becoming a “boneshaker” roundabout. Research shows that a third of all recorded vehicle damage is as a result of potholes.

www.facebook.com/harlowlabourparty

Cllr Mike Danvers and Eugenie Harvey Photo: Jon Clempner

Mike continues to push ECC to maintain funding for the fire service. Harlow Fire Station looks set to be hit by cuts which will reduce the number of fire fighters and see the aerial ladder platform removed, putting lives at risk. We cannot accept this in Harlow, particularly when other areas in the County are not suffering the same cuts. It’s dangerous and unfair. Mike is supporting the Authority in its drive to maintain services and recruit more retained firefighters who live locally. We’ll also be demanding more police and PCSOs back on the streets to maintain order and protect the safety we all value so highly for our family and communities. The festive season is well and truly upon us and it remains only for us to wish you a safe and happy time with your family and friends.

LOCALs that launch Nicola & Nick Crooks opened the doors to their trendy antiques shop, Antiques & Chic back in October. here We find out a little more...

When did you set up your business? We have been running the business online part-time for years. I was a French teacher and then had some time at home for a few years with our two young children (now 4 and 5) and Nick had been an estate agent for 20 years in Walthamstow. So we ran the business alongside these commitments until June of this year when we decided to open our shop and go full time in Antiques. How did you decide on your company name? We wanted our name to obviously show that we sell antiques but we also have all the other items such as the designer bags, collectables, mid-century design pieces, costume and antique jewellery and generally chic items for the home. What made you decide to set up your own business? Opening our own shop has always been our dream. Nick has been in antiques his whole life as his father was an antique dealer and he is absolutely passionate about all things antique - I call him the ‘Lovejoy’ of the operation, as he just really knows his stuff. I have always been into fashion and jewellery and whilst trawling the antique fairs with Nick I started buying jewellery and my passion grew from there. What has been your most valuable lesson learnt? That marketing is the key to a successful business! HGA (a local print & design company) are our neighbours here with a wealth of experience and they have helped us massively with rebranding and much more. Also the importance of a decent website – thank you to Abobey, also a Harlow based firm. Surround yourself with people who know what they are doing too and don’t underestimate the value of social media. We send out Tweets, Instagram and use Facebook on a daily basis. What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? The business has to fit in around our two children and between the two of us we juggle school runs and after

school clubs. It’s great that Nick’s around a lot more to see the children, as previously he wouldn’t get home until 8pm but it can still be tough juggling everything and we often find we work late into the evening and at weekends. What has been the most rewarding aspect? Doing a job that we love. Sourcing amazing items. Meeting interesting people in our shop. Giving pleasure to other people when they get something they have always wanted or just finding them that right/unique item. Do you hope to expand your business? We are already bursting at the seams in our current warehouse and we only moved in a month ago. We plan on building a mezzanine to create another floor. We are also continuously putting more items on our website/ Ebay and currently have nearly 1000 items listed to sell. What do you like most about being self-employed? There is nothing like being your own boss and doing a job that you love. Putting your all into your own creation. It’s all yours and no one elses. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us? We specialise in antiques, collectables, vintage & retro. From homewares, lighting, vintage jewellery, salvage and mid-century design pieces. Garden wares. You name it we have it! We do keep our prices really affordable and get new items in everyday. Our stock is forever changing and we have a great website that links to our eBay store. So you can buy online or if you prefer, come and visit us at the shop - we’re family friendly and you’ll be assured a warm welcome. On Saturday 10th December, we are hosting an Antiques and Chic Christmas party open to everyone. There will be wine and mince pies, chocolates for the kids and hopefully we’ll be able to help you with some amazing and unique Christmas gifts! With easy parking for around 100 cars you can beat the Christmas crowds.

Four Essex Women, Verran Demanbro, Kate Brewis, Jaclyn Dunn and Joanne Bale have come together to form an organization to help the little children of the Bulgarian orphanages. we asked some of our local ministers…

James Rodley

Tony Mayes

Dave Welch

St Mary Magdelene church

Harlow Baptist Church

St Mary’s Chur OLd harlow

For me, the joy of Christmas is what it’s about - God coming to be with us, as one of us – rather than where I happen to be at the time. If I like the idea of being at home, it’s probably as much that I need to rest on Christmas afternoon as it is the pleasure of being with my family! But going away at Christmas brings its own issues. Being in someone else’s home has never felt quite right for me, however much I’ve cared for the people I’ve been staying with. And whilst my late father and I once investigated the possibility of staying in a hotel over Christmas rather than in the house that we shared in Surrey, what put us off wasn’t the cost but the vast amount of food on offer: we’d have been quite unable to get through half of it! So at the end of the day, I’m not sure I really know where I’d like to spend Christmas if I wasn’t at home. But I guess part of me has always fancied being in somewhere like Australia, where it’s midsummer and, rather than “snow had fallen, snow on snow”, it would be more likely to be a heatwave. And roast turkey on the beach, perhaps? I’d only want to do it once, mind you – there’s something comforting about the familiar gloom of an English late December day!

Somewhere other than home? Christmas for me has always been a time to spend with family, which is a blessing for those with a family to share it with. But if I were to spend it somewhere else, where would that be? As I reflect on the Christmas story, with its angel appearances, miracles and wonders, I am led to the time after Christmas with the arrival of Kings with gifts and the need for Jesus’ family to escape the brutality of the ruler of the territory. They became for a while refugees in Egypt until it was safe to return. Coming back to today, I have been reflecting on the situation in Syria, with people fleeing the war and brutality of that situation, most in refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon. So where I would chose to spend Christmas would be in one of those camps, trying as best I could to show the people there that they are not forgotten and that Christmas is for them as well. I would want to show them the love of God that I know. God sent his one and only son, Jesus so that all humanity might have hope and know his love. Christmas is a time to share that love and hope. Happy Christmas!

Well, where do you start? Would I like to be on Santa’s sleigh? Just to see how he really does it, the whole world in one night! Help him with all those mince pies? Would it be too cold? The North Pole is not known for its warmth is it? Might not be all that comfortable either! Perhaps it would be nice to be part of the original nativity scene, to see the angels and the shepherds, to see the child and his parents, to be caught up in the confusion and the noise, the smell the chaos, the awe and wonder. Then worship with the wise men. As much as I might dream about putting my feet up and eating a cheese sandwich once all the build- up is over, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of my saviour. I need to do that with people who want to share that experience with me, so unless they’re all coming where I am going, in which case it’s somewhere warm and relaxing, then I choose to stay put and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with church, family and friends.

Last year was the first Christmas we were not at home – the family gathered at my eldest daughter’s – we just loaded the car after the morning service and set off. No shopping cooking or cleaning! Sometimes I dream of being whisked away to a tropical island in a 5 star Hotel but on reflection there is so much about the Christmas celebration that I would miss. I think if I had a choice I would like to spend Christmas in Bethlehem. It is really beautiful in the snow. That’s right they really do have snow!On a visit one January I was so totally surprised to see the streets covered in a snowy white blanket and excited to rush out for a snowball fight. ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ has become one of my favourite carols along with ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem.’ To be in the place where Jesus was born to celebrate that moment when God came to earth as a human baby would be very special. However, no matter where I am I will always love celebrating Jesus’ Birthday, the familiar story, children getting excited and the overwhelming comfort and joy of knowing Jesus – God with us. I think everyone is coming back to us again this year so, Christmas at home busy with services, community and family - but I so love it all.

Have a great Christmas wherever you are and I pray you may know the love and joy of Jesus for yourselves, it’s why we have Christmas. 21 PLEASE MENTION THE CM17 CONNECTION WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

Will you help make the festive season a special one for Harlow Christmas Haven (The Chocolate Run)? For around 20 years we have provided a shelter for the homeless at Christmas, for 10 days from 23rd December to 1st January. We provide simple accommodation, food, clothing and toiletries. We also aim to provide a warm and friendly welcome. The number of guests varies, but we will probably have 20 to 25 people staying overnight with us this Christmas. This year we are staying open until 3 January, to cover the weekend. If you are interested in helping please email: contact@chocolaterun.org.uk or call our chair Jo Busson, on 07951 612803. Our volunteers do as many, or as few, shifts as they want. We need volunteers to cover 24/7. We will run 5 shifts a day, an 8 hour night shift from midnight to 8am, then 4 hour shifts for the rest of the day!

Harlow Chorus Out with the Old Year In with the New Words by Mick Rumens

As I write this article, on 13th November, my mind is still ringing with the echoes of our Remembrance weekend concert, performed on Saturday 12th November at St Michael’s, Bishop’s Stortford. Our ‘stand-in’ musical director had rehearsed us to the peak of our abilities so that, the performance was really memorable and very well received by our audience. The applause was prolonged for our soloists, the chorus, our accompanist, Susan Graham-Smith, and very much so for our very experienced conductor, Steven. Our final concert of 2016, a celebration of Christmas with carols and choral music for choirs and audience followed by seasonal refreshments set us all up for the Festive holidays. St John’s church in Epping will once again be our venue for this popular event to be held on Saturday 10th December. Sadly, we have just been informed that Alex Chaplin has had to proffer his resignation for personal reasons. The Chorus will return to rehearsals in the New Year, 2017, in preparation for our March concert,

which will again be performed in St John’s, Epping. The programme will consist of Handel’s, Ode for St Cecilia’s Day and Mozart’s, Mass in C Minor. Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day, a cantata composed by George Frideric Handel in 1739, is a setting of the poem by the English poet, John Dryden. The title refers to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians. The main theme of the text is the Pythagorean theory of harmonia mundi that music was a central force in the Earth’s creation. The premiere was on 22nd November 1739 at the Theatre in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London. There will be more on this concert programme in the January magazine, when I shall also hope to update our supporters on the situation regarding our Musical Director for the remainder of this 2016/2017 season. For the moment, on behalf of the Harlow Chorus I would like to wish our magazine Editor, Lorraine, and her staff and all the readers of the CM17 Connection, a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year 2017.

Rosalie’s Harp On Monday 17th October, Rosalie brought her harp into our assemblies and played to the school. She played ‘Glittering Ballroom,’ ‘Charlotte in Spring’ and ‘Barn Dance.’ Then children asked her questions. Violet: How many times have you played the harp? Rosalie: So many! Daisy: How long have you been playing? Rosalie: Since I was five, now I’m six! Ewan: Is that your own harp? Rosalie: At the moment I’m playing it but I’m borrowing it. They’re very expensive. Millie: Do you struggle because it’s big? Rosalie: I manage to play it and when I get bigger I’ll get an even bigger one! Hafsa: How did you learn? Rosalie: I practise at home every day for half an hour and I have a lesson once a week. Kayleigh: How long have you been learning those pieces? Rosalie: I have been learning these Grade 1 pieces since I turned six. Lacey: Have you let anyone else have a go at playing your harp? Rosalie: I let my sister sometimes. Eddie: How do you do it? Rosalie: You pluck the strings and when you learn how to pluck them, they play different songs. Callum: What inspired you to learn to play the harp? Rosalie: I saw it being played on T.V when I was three and wanted to play, but I had to wait until I turned five. Rosalie’s Mum: Rosalie started asking about playing the harp around age three. She had a book with a harp in it and she also watched Annie, which had a harp, and began saying ‘that’s the one I want to play’. She wasn’t supposed to start playing until she turned six, but her teacher said she was so enthusiastic that she could start at five. Henry Moore School says - Keep it up Rosalie! We look forward to seeing you in orchestras in the future! We wish all CM17 readers a Peaceful, Happy Christmas and New Year.

christmas charity Quiz for sale What is it? A take away quiz is now on sale. It is on the theme of the Festive Season (as was the one we did in 2010) and so it is called the ‘Festive Season Quiz Part II’. Most of the questions are cryptic clues or anagrams although some are (relatively!) straightforward. The answer to each one is a word relating in some way to the Festive Season. To help you we even provide a list of all the possible answers so all you have to do is match the word to the clue. The closing date for the quiz is not until Monday 6th February 2017, so it is the ideal thing to do with your family and friends over Christmas and the New Year. You could also use copies as Christmas presents – they would make unusual, cheap and hopefully interesting stocking fillers.

What is it in aid of? All profits from the quiz will be sent to the Mildmay Mission Hospital and, in particular, its work supporting children in Uganda who have HIV/Aids. (Last year’s quiz raised £1609.90 for this project!) Where can I get a copy? Copies of the quiz are on sale at £2 and are available from: Nisa (formerly The Tuck Shop), Bell Street, Sawbridgeworth Or contact: Steve and Pam Robertson, 10 Bell Mead, Sawbridgeworth, Herts CM21 9ES.
