A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, The day after the EU Referendum, following the decisive vote to leave the EU in both the Harlow Constituency and the country, I pledged that I would do everything possible to follow the strong wishes of local residents in Parliament. We have now had a vote in Parliament in which I voted to ensure that we initiate the procedure to leave the EU, by supporting the Prime Minister’s intention to trigger Article 50 (the process to leave the EU), by the end of March 2017. Back in the Constituency, I’ve been busy with lots of visits and events.

Robert with Philip Dunne MP and PAH staff

It was great to have the Health Minister, Philip Dunne MP visit Princess Alexandra Hospital who thanked the remarkably passionate and committed staff there who spoke about improving care. I got into the Christmas spirit nice and early this year after I attended the Old Harlow Christmas lights switch-on and carols! Massive congratulations to Old Harlow Baptist Church and all of the local businesses for organising such a special evening. It was wonderful to see the high street packed out for such a lovely community event.

Robert at the Old Harlow Christmas Lights Switch on

I was very pleased to have visited Harlow’s Royal Mail Delivery Office for my yearly visit. I wished our Postmen and Postwomen a very happy Christmas and thanked them for all the hard work they do all year round. This year, Royal Mail has been celebrating its 500th anniversary, with this festive period marking half a millennium of delivering Christmas cards and parcels! I was delighted to be invited to cut the ribbon to open the new and improved Hastingwood Village Hall as well. Congratulations to all the Hastingwood Village Hall committee, especially Jacky, for their hard work in raising over £100,000 - an incredible sum of money. The amazing new facilities this has paid for have transformed the village hall and made such a difference to local residents. I’d also like to thank Essex County Council, Councillor David Stallan, and North Weald Church as well for all of their support with the project. I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you all the very best for the New Year. Very best wishes, Robert

Realistic Resolutions By Alison Runham www.alisonrunham.co.uk

New Year resolutions sound like a great idea: a fresh year and a fresh start. So why do they often fail? Setting yourself up for Failure At New Year, festive goodwill and New Year enthusiasm can entice us into making a multitude of overly ambitious resolutions, setting ourselves up to fail and often, give up completely on our goals. So let’s turn three popular, doomed-to-failure aspirations into realistic resolutions. More Exercise Your Resolution: I’ll go to Pilates, do my dance DVD and walk two miles every week! You didn’t manage any of these things every week last year - ask yourself why. Identify activities you enjoy and can most easily fit in. A Better Resolution: I’ll do at least an hour’s exercise every week. Weather too bad for walking? Missed Pilates? Resolve to do your exercise DVD instead. Anything else is a bonus. Better to do some exercise consistently than none. Less Alcohol Your Resolution: “I won’t drink on weekdays/at home/EVER AGAIN!”

No Smoking Your Resolution: “I smoke 30 a day, but I’m quitting for good at New Year!” It’s probably quicker to list conditions not aggravated or caused by smoking than to list those that are, and accepting you’re addicted to nicotine can be hard. But that twitchiness you feel – the need for a cigarette to ‘calm your nerves’ - is nicotine withdrawal, which can occur very quickly. This can make smoking hard to kick, particularly for moderate or heavy smokers. While a few successfully go ‘cold turkey’, gradually reducing your nicotine intake is the most reliable and angstfree method. A Better Resolution: Try the options below and keep going until you find a strategy that works.

• Finding other ways to relax if you always have a drink on returning from work (or make it a Friday-only treat). Feeling you ‘need’ a drink is a warning sign; consider if you need to make changes in your work life.

• Visit your GP. They can prescribe some nicotine replacement products and refer you to counselling. You can also buy nicotine replacement products; experiment and see what works best for you. • If you don’t already, make yourself smoke outside; it takes more effort. Toxins from your cigarette linger in the air (second-hand smoke) and settle on surfaces, where they’re re-released (third-hand smoke), so you’ll be improving the health of housemates and visitors too. • Smoke to a timed schedule and gradually increase the time between cigarettes. Even if you smoke 25 a day and only drop one daily cigarette per fortnight, you’ll still be a non-smoker in under a year. • Keep nicotine but eliminate cigarette toxins like cyanide and arsenic by swapping to e-cigarettes or vaporisers.

• On alternate nights, swap that wine with dinner or beer with friends for low-alcohol or nonalcoholic versions.

‘Resolution’ has an array of scientific and historical meanings, including ‘reduction to a simpler form’. So keep your resolutions simple – and realistic!

Recent research shows that even alcohol intake under the recommended limits of 2-3 units daily and 14 units per week increases your risk of many serious conditions, including dementia and some cancers, so reducing your intake is great – but tough if you’re a regular drinker. A Better Resolution: Think about when and where you drink alcohol, and reduce your intake gradually. Try: • Matching every alcoholic drink with a soft drink, or buying a large soft drink later in the evening to last until home time.

in person Name and Business Dee Finnegan, partner at Spectrum Family Law. Where do you live? In a very, very old house that is in constant need of attention and tlc but I love it! What’s your favourite local venue? Well, before it closed down it was Bruno’s in Old Harlow; am now bereft and can’t wait for another place like it to open. What’s your favourite local shop? Anywhere I can buy food! What do you like best about Harlow? Since Harlow County Court closed I’m hard pressed to say! Probably Carphone Warehouse…I spend so much time in there! What do you like doing when you’re not

working? I do love good restaurants and going to the theatre. I set up my business because... To have more autonomy to manage what we do and how we do it. The firm was set up to fill a gap in the market for a specialist family law firm offering expertise. Best thing that’s happened to you recently? Setting up in business with my business partner Margaret Porter. Mike Danvers and EUGENIE HARVEY - getting things done FOR the residents of CM17

A new year brings new challenges for us all. Mike and Eugenie will be firmly focused on the County Council election in May and hoping to persuade CM17 readers to support them. One of the major challenges will be the development of the new Local Plan which will lay out how Harlow changes between now and 2031. This means how much housing and where; these are issues that will directly affect you. The government has made an estimate of how big the population will be by then and there’s no use pretending that this isn’t going to happen. So the question is, “what do we want for Harlow? If we don’t agree a new plan, then developers will be able to step into the vacuum and quite literally build what they want, where they want. If you want to know more about the process or share views, please contact us. Good news at last for Newhall residents; a 420 place primary school and a 56 place early learning nursery are expected to open in September 2018. Under strict new government rules, the school will either be an academy or a free school and although built by ECC, it cannot be run directly by the local authority.

Web: www.harlowlabour.org FB:

www.facebook.com/harlowlabourparty

Thanks to all our members who contributed to Harlow Labour Party’s effort to raise funds for a new fridge for Harlow Foodbank. The new 600 litre fridge enabled them to cope with the demand over the festive period. That we should need food banks, let alone that usage of them is increasing, is a national disgrace. It’s no coincidence that the increase in food banks has tracked alongside the Tory’s failed austerity programme and changes to our benefits system which have hit the poorest the hardest. Great news for Churchgate Street - the Residents’ Association was successful in applications to Harlow Recreation Trust and ECC’s Community Initiative Fund for grants totalling £25,000 to improve the Mill Lane playground. Here’s a great year ahead for all in 2017!

waterlane theatre company present dad’s army Who do you think you are kidding Mrs Hitler? We all know Dad’s Army, don’t we? Well think again - Water Lane Theatre Company are taking a rather unique look at the Croft and Perry classic – and this time the ladies are in charge! But don’t panic - all your favourite characters will still be there - Captain Mainwaring, Sgt. Wilson, Corporal Jones with the catch phrases we all know almost by heart (Pike is still a ‘stupid boy’). The only difference is that the entire platoon will be played by a female cast! In a complete reversal, Mrs Fox, Mrs Pike and others will be performed by the men of the company-not pretty but certainly unique! Director Granville Rush believes that this is the

first time that Dad’s Army has performed in this way and that the unusual casting will give this familiar favourite a unique twist that will not only surprise the audience but allow them to see the classic comedy in a completely different way. The play is at the Rhodes Arts Centre on February 2-4th and will support the Isabel Hospice with Bishop’s Stortford based financial advisors Enable IFA as sponsors. Evening performance tickets will be £14 and £12 concessions with a group discount of 10 tickets for the price of 9. There will be a matinee performance on the Saturday with all tickets at £10.

IT’s your community

Harlow sea welcome Aboard new recruits & helpers Did you know there has been a thriving sea cadet unit in Harlow for over 50 years? We meet every Tuesday and Thursday. Junior Cadets 10-12, Sea Cadets 12-18 and Marine Cadets 13-18. At the Remembrance Sunday Service in the Town Park last year, you would have seen our cadets proudly on parade. A central part of our calendar – taking part in the service is very important, the cadets get to show their community a face of local youth - many believe sadly to be missing these days. One of our many aims is to try and install a greater sense of community within the cadets. We passionately believe in our cadets, actively encouraging them to achieve their potential. It’s the combination of Royal Navy tradition within a structured regime bringing together their energy and drive that has kept the unit going for over five decades. Our cadets go on to become many things in life, not necessarily anything to do with the military. Being a cadet

20

teaches our young people self-confidence, team work, better coping mechanisms and life skills. In addition to learning Seamanship – our cadets get involved with five a side football, swimming, cooking, shooting, sailing, we also offer weekends away with other local and national units. In summer months they also participate in boating activities. There are also many weekend boating, swimming or camping activities too. We are also active out in the community; the cadets regularly help with events held by St Clare Hospice, Cancer Research and both Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford branches of the British Legion, helping to raise money for the local community. As a charity we do not get financial help from the MOD so are self-funding. Fund raising is an important part of the unit management team’s job; it’s also one of the most fun. As well as welcoming new cadets we would really like to welcome new volunteers to strengthen our team

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING SQUASH & SPINACH LASAGNE 1 butternut squash, peeled and flesh diced 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 tsp dried oregano 3 tbsp olive oil 200g baby spinach leaves 250g pack fresh egg lasagne sheets 250g ricotta cheese 300g cottage cheese

IF YOU FANCY A MEAT-FREE SUPPER THIS

150g ready-grated mozzarella cheese

WEEK THEN TRY THIS DELICIOUS FILLING VEGETARIAN LASAGNE. SERVE WITH A CRISP GREEN SALAD AND CRUSTY BREAD.

25g pine nuts Green salad, to serve

1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Place the diced butternut squash, onion, garlic and oregano in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and toss to mix. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the squash is very tender. Cool for 10 minutes. 2. Transfer everything from the roasting tin (including any pan juices) to a food processor and process until smooth, adding a little hot water if needed to give the mixture a spreadable consistency. 3. Steam the spinach for 1-2 minutes until just wilted. Place the lasagne sheets in a large shallow heatproof dish and cover with boiling water. Leave for 3-4 minutes to soften then lift out of the water and drain on kitchen paper. Mix together the ricotta and cottage cheeses in a bowl along with half the mozzarella cheese. 4. Spread a third of the squash mixture in the base of a square medium-sized ovenproof dish. Top with a layer of wilted spinach followed by a layer of the cheese mixture and a layer of lasagne sheets, cutting them to fit if necessary. Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with lasagne sheets and a thin layer of the remaining cheese mixture. Scatter over the rest of the mozzarella cheese and the pine nuts, and drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cheese topping is golden and bubbling. Serve with green salad.

TIP: Instead of the spinach you could use lightly fried slices of courgette or sliced beefsteak tomatoes.

Harlow Chorus Our First concert of 2017 Words by Mick Rumens

Two major works by Handel and Mozart feature in our third concert of our 2016/17 season being held at St John’s Epping. I mentioned Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day in last month’s CM17, but the work by Mozart, his ‘Great’ Mass in C Minor is considered by many the most important. Wolfgang A Mozart (1756=1791) was a prolific composer of 22 operas as well as his many choral and orchestral works. It is extraordinarily sad that his two most famous liturgical works remained unfinished. His Requiem remained incomplete because of his death, but the C Minor Mass became the victim of an upheaval in his life in 1781 when he resigned from the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg, moved to make Vienna his permanent home, and, against his fathers wishes married Constanze Weber in 1782. The newly-weds returned to Salzburg in 1783 after the birth of their firs child. Mozart had with him the incomplete score

of the Mass, which remained unfinished. He had hoped to be reconciled with his father, Leopold and his sister Maria Ann but they received frosty treatment during their entire stay. They had six children of whom four died in infancy. Although incomplete the work was first performed on August 25, 1783 in St Peter’s Church, Salzburg with Constanze herself taking one of the soprano solo parts. Paul Ayres will be our accompanist on the organ, and our President, Sarah TennantFlowers, who was our much admired musical director some years ago, will be our conductor. We are very pleased that our President, Sarah Tennant-Flowers has agreed to become our musical director for the remainder of this season, and will advise us in our search for a fulltime replacement in 2017. I look forward to your continued support and hope to meet as many CM17 readers as possible at our concerts this year.

Parndon Mill: crossing Boundaries A hub of creativity

Paintings by Jane Lewis - oil to water and back again Ceramics by Caroline Fish - lively gestural painted earthenware Jane Lewis, working from her studio at her home in Suffolk, is a painter whose abstract work often shows strong reference to the landscape. She believes in the underlying importance and discipline of regular observational drawing - in her case largely life drawing. She works in both oils and watercolour and has recently been elected an Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society (ARWS). Caroline Fish also works in Suffolk and is interested in the lines and shapes within landscape, and also the way the natural and manmade interact; for instance how a telegraph wire can slice across your view. She uses the warmth and softness of red earthenware clay and the potential it offers for painted decoration. Building up slips and glaze in layers adds depth and colour, allowing the subtlety of the clay to show through.

The Henry Moore Primary School Christmas at Henry Moore

Christmas at Henry Moore was the usual very busy, exciting time with many very different events! Year R performed a Nativity called ‘I-Spy Christmas.’ The children had to spot the signs of Christmas in a game of I-Spy. Years 1 and 2 performed ‘Come and Join the Celebration.’ Year 3 performed a nativity at St Andrew’s Church. Year 4 performed a Carol Concert at the Church with reflections on Christmas for other people, such as the soldiers during World War 1 and homeless people. Years 5 and 6 held a ‘Stable Event’ outside. This took place after CM17 went to print. We have included a photograph of a rehearsal. A Happy New Year to all CM17 readers!

Turn right without crossing and follow path with trees on left, until tarmac path leads right through playground to reach river again. Turn left and keep going, with river now on right, over Hockerill Street, under station road, crossing over (and a little right) along London Road and continue for a mile over lock and past Rushy Mead nature reserve to second lock. Turn right on Pig Lane and, after gate, right again into field. Keep straight on path to emerge, via lanes and railway crossing ahead onto Twyford Road. Cross and keep straight on Southmill Road, turn right by Rhodes Centre into South Street and past shops along Potter Street. Turn right down Bridge Street to return to Star.
