THE
CM17
WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The February edition of the cm17 connection How’s your year going so far? I’ve been making plans both personally and for my business (it’s ongoing, I was NEVER going to get it finished in January!). One recurring theme that keeps coming up is that if you don’t plan, write and REVIEW your goals (wishes or dreams!) they are less likely to happen. Here’s some interesting statistics* that you may or may not have come across before: • 80% of Americans claim that they don’t have goals • 16% of them have goals, but they don’t write them down • Only 3% actually have written goals, but they don’t review them regularly • Only 1% has written goals and they review them regularly, and these are among the highest achievers in the US So, I’m planning for change and good things this year. I’m making a list of my goals, breaking each one down into smaller, achievable steps and I’ll be revisiting them until they become reality! I’m determined to be one of the 1%; I’m on a mission! And now that I’ve “put it out there” I’m even more accountable to make sure it happens! I should just add, that I totally intend to be kind to myself too. Please join me in either setting your own goals or being kind to yourself, both are equally fab things to do! And remember, goal setting can be done at any time of year not just January (smiles)! Here’s to a productive, goal-achieving year!

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, Brexit means Brexit After the referendum result, I pledged that I would do all I can in Parliament to make sure the wishes of the people of Harlow and of the United Kingdom are respected. On 24th June, I said: “I pay tribute to the many Harlow residents who voted for leave and also the smaller number who voted to remain. Given that the vote in Harlow was so decisive, as MP I will make it my duty to ensure that residents’ clear and definitive wishes are followed through in Parliament.” The Prime Minister has confirmed that Brexit really does mean Brexit, that Britain will leave the EU, the single market, the customs union, and will not be subject to European law. The deal our Prime Minister makes to leave the European Union will be subject to a vote in
Parliament, where MPs and Lords will be able to decide either to accept the deal she has made and leave the EU, or to leave the EU anyway without the deal. In the words of our Prime Minister, “We are a great, global nation with so much to offer Europe and so much to offer the world. One of the world’s largest and strongest economies. With the finest intelligence services, the bravest armed forces, the most effective hard and soft power, and Robert at the Old Harlow Christmas Lights Switch on friendships, partnerships and alliances in every continent. When future generations look back at this time, they will judge us not only by the decision that we made but by what we made of that decision. They will see that we shaped them a brighter future. They will know that we built them a better Britain.” Best wishes, Robert

in person Name and Business Andy Peasey and I own and run Ruggerbugs. Where do you live? Hatfield Heath. What’s your favourite local venue? The new cinema in the Harvey Centre is excellent; we went there over the Christmas holidays and were very impressed. What’s your favourite local shop? We seem to spend a lot of time in Home Sense in Edinburgh Way. What do you like best about Harlow? The Old Town is lovely, our offices are based there and we have lots of family and friends there. What do you like doing when you’re not working?
Spending time with my family and also playing golf badly! I set up my business because... I wanted to encourage children in the area to engage with sport from an early age and have the opportunity to take part in the best sport in the world. Rugby offers so much to parents, players and supporters alike. Best thing that’s happened to you recently? My company was awarded a Gold Accreditation to the Children’s Activities Association in a matter of 3 weeks when it can take up to 3 years. This gives parents the peace of mind that our activity is age appropriate, safe and all our procedures have been independently assessed and approved.

Mike Danvers and EUGENIE HARVEY - working for the residents of CM17
Now that we’re well and truly into 2017 and with the weather improving, we’re focusing all our efforts on the County Council elections in May. Mike is hoping to be re-elected to represent Harlow North (Old Harlow, and Newhall), a seat he has held for three years and Eugenie is hoping to be elected to represent Harlow South East (Church Langley and Potter Street). We’ll be out on the doorsteps over the coming weeks and months hoping to meet as many CM17 residents as possible. We want to hear what YOU want from your County Council and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you have about Labour’s plans. You can also contact us directly – please see details at the bottom of this page. In advance of the election, Labour has launched its manifesto for Essex. Commitments include; • More police and PCSOs on the streets to curb anti-social behaviour and keep our streets safe • Opposing further cuts to the Fire and Rescue services • Investing in street maintenance and POT HOLE REPAIR • Devolving grass kerb maintenance and street

lighting to local communities. Only Labour-run councils have all night lighting across Essex • Working with Essex residents to deal with local parking issues • Offering free bus passes and transport services for the elderly as well as for young people, helping them travel to training and jobs The full manifesto can be found here: http://www.essexlabour.org.uk/labour_group_ launch_2017_manifesto In other news, despite strong local opposition the Tory controlled Essex County Council led by portfolio holder Eddie Johnson, appeared determined to push through the Gilden Way Development. Mike Danvers tried his best to jettison the scheme which will have many detrimental effects on Old Harlow. Mike and Eugenie will both be visiting the Gibberd Garden for the wonderful snowdrop weekends in February (12, 19 and 26) – maybe we will see you there!

Mike Garnett to stand up for Old Harlow at Essex County Council This year’s Essex County Council elections are crucial for our town. Only Conservatives at County Hall have pledged to keep Council Tax low. I am standing to be your County Councillor because I want investment for local regeneration, better care for the vulnerable and more action on potholes. As an experienced Councillor I have listened to your concerns and made these my three priorities: 1. No additional homes in Churchgate Street Harlow Labour Party recently voted for plans to build 3,000 additional homes in Churchgate Street. Conservatives voted against these proposals. 2. Gilden Way Junction will not solve congestion I continue to fight against linking Harlow to a new junction on the M11 along Gilden Way. The Government supports a new ‘garden town’ north of Harlow at Gilston. Only a northern bypass will deal with future congestion. 3. Stop Labour building over the Town Park Labour are developing plans to build a road through our Town Park. It is unacceptable that Labour would even consider building on one of our most important and much-loved green spaces. Join the Conservative campaign to oppose this plan. Our CHARITy of the year 2017
streets2homes In December CM Connection Magazines ran a Facebook competition asking people to vote for their favourite local charity. The winner would become our first ever “Charity of the Year” receiving additional exposure from us in terms of support and publicity within our publications and also receive a donation of £100, in lieu of Christmas cards. The charities were put forward by our advertisers and the top 5 nominated were: • Grove Cottage • Herts & Essex Community Farm • PACT for Autism • Streets2Homes • St Elizabeth’s Centre It was a very exciting and a close run thing with the lead changing several times. On the last day of voting it was neck and neck but with a last minute surge of votes (or FB likes!) Streets2Homes pipped St Elizabeth’s to the post to become our charity of the year 2017! The whole campaign reached over 11k people in less than a week, that’s 11k people that now know a little more about each of the charities shortlisted, which is good thing in our book! Rest assured that we will continue to support all other local charities, and non-salaried organisations as we have always done, and you never know it could be your favourite group that becomes our next “Charity of the Year”!

Who are Streets2Homes? Streets2Homes is a charity based in Harlow, Essex and we manage a day centre which seeks to reach out to and help homeless people. We provide a safe and friendly environment in which we can assist them in a number of ways, including finding accommodation. The demand for housing in this area always outstrips availability so it can take time to find suitable accommodation; we are always looking for good landlords to work with us. The day centre provides a place to access housing advice, social contact, training sessions, employment advice, health services, help with claiming benefits, washing facilities, food, clothing, general guidance and support. In 2016 we have seen 362 new clients and dealt with 146 cases over the telephone, providing advice, guidance and practical solutions. Of the 508 people we assisted the following: • 72 into the private rented sector • 57 into other form of rented accommodation (this group includes lodging with friends/family etc.) • 20 successful referrals to supported accommodation • 3 were housed by the local authority • 25 were reconnected to the area they had an established link with • And the best part…85 were prevented from becoming homeless through mediation or intervention.

Pub & café Walks
Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Cakes and Crocuses The popular Rosey Lea café makes a great base for a ramble through Stortford’s flowering rural fringes. From the café, accessible via a long drive off the Hadham Road, start walking back along tarmac lane towards the entrance. Turn sharp right by silver silos and right again on bridleway. Follow track behind Wickham Hall and turn left at little lodge house. Take next path right and follow it, winding alongside fields until an arrow points right; double back across fields, over stiles and head for brick arch under bypass. Walk past woods and follow path, eventually emerging onto Dane O’Coys. Turn right along road, cross Cricketfield Lane and continue, cross again to left, and go on along Maple Avenue. Turn right along Maze Green Road and follow Hertfordshire Way signs along paths through houses, across bypass, along field edges and, finally, right again past budding woods. Follow path under Hadham Road and leave Hertfordshire Way to continue straight along daffodil-lined drive of Hadham Lodge. Keep on, with pond on left and house on right, through pretty paddock and past more woods. When trees on left end, follow surfaced track right towards Wickham Hall. Just before you reach buildings, turn right on footpath to return to start. LOCATION: Wickham Hall

Time to celebrate
Harlow is 70 Harlow is getting ready to celebrate its 70th birthday this year! Harlow was first designated a new town on 25 March 1947 and in its 70-year history has seen some important firsts: it was the site for the country’s first residential tower block (The Lawn, built in 1951), the first pedestrianised shopping precinct (in the town centre), is the birthplace of fibre optic communications and is the only town in the UK and possibly the world to be known as a Sculpture Town. Not only is 2017 Harlow’s 70th birthday, it is also Harlow Town Park’s 60th anniversary. Harlow College graphic design students and local companies Blue Pig Creative and Hot Mash Creative have just designed the official logo, which will be the symbol of this year’s celebrations. To date over 70 individuals, schools and organisations have expressed an interest in participating in Harlow is 70 themed events and activities. Confirmed events will be added to the website: www.harlow.gov.uk/harlow-70 If your organisation would like to get involved, please contact Becci Court on the details below.

hobbies A resoundingly successful hobby By Kate McLelland
Sunday mornings just wouldn’t be the same without them. Weddings would feel less joyous, funerals less solemn. If the church bells across the country were to fall silent, it would be the end of a tradition that has lasted for at least two thousand years. Bell-ringing is deeply embedded in our culture, so it hardly seems possible that one day local community groups might stop coming together to ring out those powerful messages of joy, sadness and celebration. Unfortunately that day could be closer than you might imagine. A survey recently carried out by BBC local radio shows that bell-ringers across the country are finding it harder and harder to recruit new volunteers. Almost 75% of the bell-ringers questioned said that over the past ten years they have found it harder to find new recruits, particularly young people under the age of 21. There have even been calls to reclassify bell-ringing as a sport in order to gain access to funding, raise its profile and make it appear ‘cooler’ to a younger generation. Ironically this comes at a time when bell-ringing is more in demand than ever. Over sixty per cent of the BBC survey respondents said that requests for their services had increased over the past decade. The History of Church Bells Early Christian missionaries used handbells to call people to prayer, and an Italian bishop was the first to introduce larger, hanging bells into his churches in Campania around the year 400 AD. This practice gradually spread throughout Europe until it reached Great Britain around 200 years later. By the year 750 AD, church bells were sufficiently common for the Archbishop of York to order his priests to toll bells at certain times of the day.
26
For hundreds of years the practice of bell-ringing remained relatively simple, but in late medieval times ringers began to experiment with new techniques, attaching bells to quarter and halfwheel timber shapes that offered ringers greater control over the bell’s swing. Many bells and bell towers were lost during the Reformation, when Henry VIII’s officers destroyed the nation’s rich abbey churches. After that time, churches began to rehang bells mounted on a whole wheel, refining the technology to a point where the bell could perform a 360º rotation and be stopped and started at will, making more complex ‘peals’ possible. How do I start? You don’t need to be super-fit, or have a lot of upper body strength, to be a bell-ringer. Ringing is the perfect way to enjoy gentle physical exercise and is suitable for people of all ages. The action of pulling on the rope not only gives your muscles a mild workout, it also improves agility, reaction time and co-ordination. There are 40,000 bell-ringers in the UK, many of them qualified to teach. You can find a group near you by going to www.bellringing.org and searching their database, or alternatively ask your local church if they run taster sessions. How does Bell-ringing work? At the beginning of the session the bells are rung ‘up’: the angle of swing is gradually increased until the bell is swinging full circle. When it reaches a 360º rotation it can then be stopped, mouth upwards, using a ‘stay’ and a ‘slider’ to control it.

Campanology When the bell is in the upward position, it is said to be ‘set’. Each time the bell-ringer pulls the rope, the bell swings through another full circle rotation and sounds. In ‘change ringing’ the bell-ringers adjust the intervals at which they pull their ropes to control the speed of striking. This produces a musical pattern. How do I learn? Novice bell-ringers are usually taught in several stages: during the first session they will learn to handle the bell (this is usually done on a one-toone basis); in the second they will learn to ring with others. After this students learn about ‘change ringing’, where ringers are required to sound their bells in a particular order, building up from simple to more complex patterns of ringing. The tutorial period usually ends with a 45-minute session during which students demonstrate that they have mastered the required techniques.
The Benefits of Bell-ringing Dickon Love, who is Tower Captain at the quaintly named church of St James Garlickhythe in London, describes bell-ringing as “the best of form of heavy metal … a big loud noise. It keeps you fit, there’s a competitive element as well, and it’s a very social thing to do - after each practice without fail you can find us down the local pub.” Many teams also organise monthly gatherings or plan outings to ring bells in different parts of the country, while some are even invited overseas to ring in churches as far away as Australia. If you enjoy competition, you may relish taking part in contests such as the National Twelve-bell Striking Contest. So, if you’re up for some gentle exercise and brain-training, you enjoy socialising with other like-minded people and you want to protect an important part of Britain’s heritage, bell-ringing could be the hobby you’ve been looking for. Join up, and keep those bells sounding well into the future.

short story everyone Lies By Jackie Breswter
“Put this on, mate.” Craig threw the crumpled teeshirt at Gary. “We’ve got to get you looking the part for your big date.” “It smells like wet dog,” Gary winced. “Why can’t I just wear my normal clothes?” “Because this, my friend, is the shirt you’re wearing in your dating profile picture.” Craig watched as Gary squeezed into the threadbare shirt. “Aren’t you amazed I’ve kept it all these years?” “I can’t move my arms,” Gary said. “Remind me why I have to wear this?” “So the young lady can’t accuse you of using a photo that’s ten years out of date.” “But it is ten years out of date,” Gary complained. “Surely when she sees me she’ll notice that I have less hair and more girth?” “Yeah, but by then you’ll be on the date,” Craig said, “and it’ll be too late to back out. And besides, everyone lies on these internet dating sites. When are you meeting her?” “In an hour.” Gary tugged at the tee-shirt. “And what’s she like?” “She’s single and pretty,” he grinned. “She’s got lovely eyes and long brown hair.” “Punching well above your weight,” Craig nodded approvingly. “What does she do for a living?” “She did work in a school, but now she’s started a career in entertainment.” “Entertainment?” Craig frowned. “What’s that all about?” “I don’t know, perhaps she’s a singer,” Gary shrugged. “I suppose I’ll soon find out.” “Does this lucky lady have a name?” Craig asked. “Brenda.” “You’re kidding!” Craig snorted. “How old did she say she was?” “Same age as me, mid-thirties.” “No lasses our age are called Brenda,” Craig sniggered. “I knew it was too good to be true.” “Why would she lie?” Gary asked. “Everyone lies, that’s what I keep saying. Let’s have a look at her profile pic.” He opened Gary’s laptop. “I bet it’s in black and white.” “Give that to me.” Gary wrestled the keyboard back. “Here she is, Brenda Buttons. Gorgeous isn’t she?” Craig stared at the screen and nearly choked.
30
“She’s pulled a right fast one on you,” he chuckled. “That’s Kate Middleton.” “Who?” “Married to Prince William.” Craig clutched his sides. “Gary, you’re such a berk.” “Perhaps she just looks like her?” Gary said. “Mate, not even in your wildest dreams,” Craig laughed. “Wait, Brenda Buttons! You said she used to work in a school. Wasn’t one of our dinner ladies called that?” “I can’t remember.” “Yeah you can. She was a right battle axe.” “Which one?” “She hauled us in front of the Head after you sprayed yourself with ketchup pretending you had a nosebleed.” “Oh yeah,” Gary grinned, “I remember that.” “That was Brenda Buttons.” Craig folded his arms and smirked. “She’s your hot date.” “She can’t be,” Gary said. “She’d be about a hundred now.” “Like I said,” Craig smiled, “everyone lies.” “What if it’s really her?” Gary was horrified. “You can have a cosy cuppa and reminisce about dead flies’ graveyard,” Craig laughed. “It’ll be fine.” “It won’t be.” Gary put his head in his hands. “Aren’t there laws about dating dinner ladies?” The computer made a gentle ping. Gary read the screen. “She’s just cancelled on me,” he sighed with relief. “Says she’s got to work.” “Looks like you’ve dodged a bullet,” Craig said. “Delete your profile before she tries to reschedule.” Meanwhile, across town, Brenda Buttons, niece and namesake of the formidable former dinner lady, was cutting the ribbon to open a new supermarket, and wondering whether her budding career as a Kate Middleton lookalike was beginning to get in the way of her love life.

Harlow Chorus St John’s, Epping Saturday 23rd March Words by Mick Rumens
Our first rehearsal of the New Year on Monday 9th January was a memorable evening when we were pleased to applaud the return of Sarah Tenant-Flowers, our President, who is preparing us for our first concert of 2017. In addition we were glad to welcome new members, and returning members, particularly among our tenors, to enhance the chorus. We still have plenty of room to accommodate any other new members who would like to join us. Monday evenings at St. Johns ARC in Old Harlow commencing 7.30pm until 10pm. We look forward to seeing you. One of the most versatile of choral conductors, Sarah Tenant-Flowers works with an impressive array of professional and amateur choirs, both overseas and throughout the UK. Combining natural flair for communication and imaginative programming with intellectual rigour and depth of experience as a vocal trainer, she inspires passionate, distinctive performances. …one of those amazingly inspirational conductors…who always seems to bring something new to the repertoire
As well as choral and orchestral conducting Sarah is in huge demand as a conducting teacher, choral animateur and adjudicator. She is a co-founder of the Association of British Choral Directors, former general manager of The Sixteen, and featured as conducting mentor in BBC2’s popular TV series Maestro (2008). Her Musical Director posts include that of professional ensembles Singscape and Papagena, symphony choirs Harlow Chorus and Nottingham University Choir, and chamber choirs Encoro and Reading Bach Choir. Sarah is a guest chorusmaster of the BBC Symphony Chorus and performs as guest conductor with many renowned ensembles including the Hilliard Ensemble, National Chamber Choir of Ireland, Caoe Town Philharmonia Chorus, to name but a few. Sarah is also Associate Director of the Brandenburgh Sinfonia (2003 – present) with whom she performs regularly in the UK. There is no doubt that this will be a concert to remember, so I urge you to obtain your tickets early so that you are not disappointed.
