WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The May edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

Still basking in the glow of the Easter break and heading into a month with another two bank holidays - get in! Two glorious extra days to fill with what ever we choose, lovely! The What’s On and Community pages are bursting with events and things to do this month but a couple of things warranted an extra mention. First up, is Rock the Park 2017! This FREE community event, on the second May bank holiday, is run by Harlow Rock School and is a show case for the school as well as other local, young musicians. What makes it special is that all local schools, charities and organisations are welcome to have information or fundraising stalls there. It’s a family event and I’d recommend bringing a picnic (definitely a brolly!) and enjoying Harlow’s musical talent, the Town Park and Pets Corner for the day. The second event is Streets2Homes annual Sleep out! It’s their biggest awareness and fundraising event of the year and finally, this year I am able to take part! Part of me is wishing that my schedule allowed me to do this when I was a lot younger but as we all know, homelessness effects all ages, from all walks of life and at any time. So at the tender age of 49 I will be sleeping out, to get the tiniest taster of what it’s like and hopefully raise some money too. (I am humbly aware that I have the luxury of being able to prepare well in advance for this and will have plenty of warm clothing, cardboard and a sleeping bag.) If you would like to get involved or maybe keep me company, information about the event can be found on page 41. Have a great month, Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, I hope you all had a lovely Easter and enjoyed the beautiful weather while it lasted! I am continuing to work hard on my priorities for Harlow. I have spent every day since becoming MP working hard for Harlow and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved so far, including: Building an Even Better Harlow • £500M Government investment to relocate the labs of Public Health England to Harlow which will soon be bringing 10,000 jobs and making our town the science health capital of the world. • £500K Government investment to support the delivery of 8,500 new homes just north of Harlow Town Station to provide much needed affordable housing for our young people. • £19M Government investment to upgrade our roads and infrastructure which we desperately need to reduce traffic in our town. • Championing Apprenticeships and Education • £2.8M Government investment to support the building of Harlow College’s fantastic new Advanced Manufacturing Centre, providing students with high quality skills and apprenticeships. • £3.5M Government investment for Harlow College to build and run a Technical and Professional Skills Centre at Stansted Airport, bridging the skills gap in aircraft engineering and technical skills. Cutting the Cost of Living • Fuel Duty being frozen again, a campaign which I kicked off when I first became MP and have worked hard on since to make a massive difference to the pockets of hard-pressed motorists.

• The National Living Wage rising to £7.50 an hour to make sure that workers receive a fair days pay for a fair days work • Increasing the Personal Tax Free Allowance, so that workers pay less tax and keep more of their own money for themselves and their families. • Up to £2K a year being available to help hard working families with childcare for each child they have under 12 and working parents with 3 and 4 year olds getting their free childcare doubled to 30 hrs/week. Protecting our NHS • Nationally spending an additional £10B a year in real terms on the NHS and committing to increase the staff available by 80,000 by 2020, to support our hardworking NHS staff. • Working hard to campaign for the new hospital that Harlow needs in the long term, which will be fit purpose for our town’s future growth and development. • Completing a 2000m sponsored swim for the Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity Trust (to put my money where my mouth is!) which has raised over £1000. Thank you to everyone who donated! Best wishes, Robert

Parndon Mill: exhibition

bringing in may 18th May to 25th June Paintings and prints by Susan Erskine-Jones, Sarah Russell and Victoria Johns. Since moving to the UK from South Africa Susan Erskine-Jones started painting alongside printing enjoying the cross referencing that each discipline affords. She explores the themes of time, memory and identity. She evokes the significance of the familiar in her work using scenes and objects that are recognised by the viewer. Sarah Russell is a printmaker and painter. Drawing (with pencil, charcoal or paint) out of doors is the first crucial stage of Sarah’s working practice. Spending quiet time listening to the land and getting the right feeling is important. Recreating it later in the studio fusing it with memories and emotions allows the work to become more abstract. Printmaking has become the main focus although painting is also an important part of her practice, with an obvious overlap of textures, layering and mark-making which remain constant in her work. Victoria Johns focuses on mixed media painting and printmaking. Currently her inspiration is taken from maps, aerial views, town and cityscapes and architecture. By using a sketchbook and a camera she endeavours to isolate shape, space, composition, quality of line or enticing textures. This process of observation will often translate into a multilayered or textural artwork. Victoria has been exploring permanent versus temporary within these environments. “Everything around us is transient, just a ‘moment in time’”

LOCALs that launch: the popcorn experience ltd Catherine Searle launched her business just two month’s ago in March 2017. The Popcorn Experience offers something truly unique to parents and carers, we were very keen to find out more....

What is The Popcorn Experience? We are a ‘Pop Up’ life skills training company, providing workshops that teach people life skills. We are a light hearted and fun company, and look to provide a fun experience whilst people learn new things. We provide accessible learning, without any long-term commitment, and for absolute beginners. A safe environment to grow and develop. What does ‘Pop Up’ mean? ‘Pop Up’ means to us, temporary, flexible and fun. The workshop themes may change, the venue may change, the instructors and the equipment may vary. We hold the workshops in otherwise underutilised village halls or public spaces, and our equipment is designed to be portable and temporary. This means we can operate almost anywhere and move about depending on demand. What type of workshops do you offer? We have launched with our ‘My Hair Hero’ workshop, which is a 2 hour workshop to teach mums, dads and carer’s how to braid and style their children’s hair. We plan on launching several “My Hero” workshops very soon, mainly centred on beauty, technology and crafts. What made you decide to form this business? I’m passionate about self-development and knowledge sharing. I’m forever coming across people that say, I always wanted to know that, or I wish I knew how to? I believe life is short, and it’s important to feel confident and ready to try new things. I hope that The Popcorn Experience gives people the chance to do just that.

What is your background? I’m a Project Manager, specialising in Supply Chain and Ecommerce, and am passionate about event management and training. I’m also a mum to 3 children and step mum to 2 more! How should potential customers contact you? All our workshop dates, tickets and gift vouchers can be purchased online on our website, full contact details are at the bottom of the page. I know a life skill I would like to share – can I get involved? Yes! We would love to hear from you if you feel you have something to offer. Please contact us so we can discuss further!

Mike Danvers and EUGENIE HARVEY - asking for your vote at the county council elections may 4

After months of preparation, the big day is nearly upon us. On Thursday May 4 we’re off to the ballot box to vote for our County Councillors. The County Council is important because it’s responsible for services which really affect our daily lives. These include the quality of the education our children receive, the delivery of social care to our elderly, the reliability of our fire and rescue services, the safety and protection of our communities and the maintenance of our roads so that they are safe and do not damage our vehicles. These are services which we rely on and which every person should be able to access with confidence. But it is not always the case. Mike Danvers is seeking to be re-elected to represent residents in Old Harlow and Newhall and Eugenie Harvey is seeking to be elected to represent residents of Church Langley and Potter Street. Mike is

also a highly respected local Councillor and has served Harlow in this capacity since 1972. Eugenie has been a member of her local Residents’ Association for many years and has recently raised over £25k to improve a local playground. Both Mike and Eugenie are experienced, committed local campaigners who have a track record of getting things done in the interests of local residents. Both pledge to work hard and fight for your voice and your concerns to be heard at County Hall. If you have any questions or issues that you would like to raise please do so using the details below. You can also watch a short interview with Eugenie on Your Harlow by following the link. Mike and Eugenie thank you for your consideration.

Our chosen charity Some facts & stats about homelessness

Did you know that these 10 celebrities were once homeless? Hard to imagine, isn’t it? Jennifer Lopez, Steve Jobs, Sylvester Stallone, Halle Berry, Heather Mills, Chris Pratt, Jim Carey, Daniel Craig, Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Chaplin. Unexpected happenings in life can take any one of us from stability to fragility in a matter of moments and as the high-profile list of celebs above goes to show, no one is immune. The potential to the vulnerability to poverty, hunger and homelessness impacts our community each and every day and that’s why The CM Connection supports our charity of the year, Streets2Homes. Becoming homeless can happen to anyone for a whole range of reasons; drugs and alcohol addiction, mental and physical ill health, relationship breakdown, unemployment and falling on hard times can all be a cause or effect of homelessness. Pride is what often causes estrangement with family and friends and if there is no one to help, a swift decline in a person’s personal situation is inevitable. Harlow’s Streets2Homes charity manages a day centre which reaches out to our local homeless community and raises awareness further afield too. They support their clients through providing the essential needs in day to day life such as offering a place to access

important information including housing advice, employment advice, health services, skills and training sessions. They also meet basic needs by providing washing facilities, food, clothing, general guidance and support as well as providing much-needed social contact in a safe and friendly environment. The main aim is, of course, to help them find accommodation, which can be a lengthy process due to high demand and lack of available homes, so with the support of other agencies and supporters of the charity, they work tirelessly to find suitable accommodation. There are many reasons for the continued homelessness crisis, but the welfare reforms, rental costs and the shortage of affordable housing and landlords willing to let to those on benefits have all had a major impact on the figures. With increased focus on homelessness over the past 3 years especially, this has resulted in the Harlow community working together to help those who are vulnerable and without a home. Our local group of Harlow churches including St Paul’s, St Mary-at-Latton, St Stephens, St Mary’s Churchgate Street, St Mary Magdeleine have been working with The Chocolate Run and Streets2Homes and combined, have created Hope4Harlow; working together to provide a much-needed winter shelter so those without homes did not

Main causes of homelessness are eviction from the private rented sector, loss of job, relationship breakdown Of the 1,047 to access services, they assisted 684 to either secure accommodation or prevent them from becoming homeless Over the past 5 years, homelessness in Harlow has increased in line with national figures; the number of rough sleepers has increased by 133% in Harlow alone (number of sofa surfers not counted)

Harlow Chorus The close of a very busy season And A Look Forward to the Next Words by Mick Rumens

Our March concert at St John’s Church, Epping proved to be our best supported of the season so far. A big “Thank you” to all who came along and gave us their most welcome support. We now look forward to our final concert of the season at St Michael’s Church, Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday 15th July at 7.30pm. Entitled This Sceptred Isle – A Summer Prom of English choral favourites, it will include many very familiar works with a traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’ finale. For this concert we have the inspiring support of Peter Broadbent who is the founder conductor of Joyful Company of Singers and is one of Britain’s leading choral conductors. He is enjoying a versatile career with an extensive repertoire ranging from baroque music on period instruments to contemporary music, including many first performances. Peter has conducted the London Mozart Players, Divertimenti Chamber Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, the Southern Sinfonia, the English Chamber Orchestra, the City of London Sinforia, the Southern Sinfonia, the Guildford Philharmonic

Orchestra, Apollo Voices and the BBC Singers, broadcasting frequently on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. Outside the UK he has conducted concerts with the Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra & Kodaly Chorus in Hungary and a broadcast with the National Chamber Choir in Dublin. In 2006 he conducted the World Youth Choir in their summer season giving concerts in Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Germany. In 2007, Peter Broadbent was awarded the honour of the Pro Cultura Hungarica Award by the Hungarian government in recognition of his services to Hungarian music. Our accompanist for this concert will be Susan Graham Smith, on piano, who provides the Chorus with magnificent support during all our rehearsals. The Chorus received 24 applications for the post of Musical Director and the committee have the task of reducing this list of applicants to 6, who will be invited to individual ‘auditions’ by rehearsing the Chorus for an hour each so that our members will have the opportunity to participate in the selection process.

The Henry Moore Primary School World Book Day 2017 The children and the teachers all had a fantastic time during Book Day. On World Book Day the children were all invited to dress up as book characters and we had a great time ‘strutting’ ourselves down the cat walk to win some great book voucher prizes. The children also spent time learning about famous authors and enjoying book day activities in their classrooms. The year 6 charity reps also undertook a fabulous job of selling second hand books to the children. They raised lots of money which will go towards buying new books for the school.
