WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The june edition of the cm17 connection
CONNECTION
We are official half way through the year. I know (shakes head), the year is flying by - I actually mentioned the C word last week and have already booked my first Christmas do! But before that, we have our summer to look forward too, assuming we haven’t had it already - do you remember a few months back we had a couple of unseasonally lovely days? You do? Good! Because that may very well have been our summer! Joking aside, summer wouldn’t be summer without local village and school fetes. We have open gardens, festivals, picnics and concerts to tempt us out of our homes too, all of which are detailed in this month’s edition. There really is no excuse to stay indoors and no, you are not allowed to blame the weather. We are British, as long as you have a bag packed for every conceivable weather eventuality, it’ll be fine! Plus, those that have spent months organising said events would be eternally grateful to you! I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 recently (tip if you haven’t seen it, watch to the very, very end - I thought I had but I still missed something!). I mention it because the film is about relationships and primarily that of a father/son/dad. With Father’s day on Sunday 18th June I wanted to acknowledge all those that have “stepped up” to be someone’s dad: “Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad.” Until next month,

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon Working Hard For Harlow Dear Residents, I have been working hard for Harlow & the villages every day since you first backed me back in 2010 to represent you as your Member of Parliament. Whenever I’m speaking to residents, the priorities for Harlow are clear: 1. Building an Even Better Harlow: I’ve worked hard to secure £millions of Government investment to bring more jobs, apprenticeships, housing & infrastructure back to our town and villages. £400m in relocating Public Health England to Harlow, bringing 1000s of jobs. £19m in upgrading our roads to reduce traffic. £500K in supporting the delivery of 8,500 new affordable homes. I will continue to work hard to bring investment into Harlow and the villages. 2. Championing Apprenticeships and Education: I am passionate about giving our young people the chance to get the skills, apprenticeships and jobs they need. I‘ve secured £6.3m for Harlow College’s remarkable Advanced Manufacturing Centre and a new Technical and Professional Skills Centre. I will continue to champion the Apprenticeships and education our town and villages need. 3. Cutting the Cost of Living: For many years, I’ve campaigned hard to keep fuel duty frozen. The Government will also introduce a price cap to stop rip-off energy bills. I campaigned successfully for the National Living Wage to help Harlow workers & a significant tax cut for lower earners. I will continue to work hard to cut the cost of living for Harlow families. 4. Cherishing our Villages: Harlow Constituency includes the beautiful villages of Hastingwood, Matching, Nazeing, Roydon & Sheering. I work
hard to protect the character and heritage of our villages on important issues like bus routes, unauthorised encampments and unwanted developments like waste incinerators. I will continue to stand up for and protect our villages. 5. Ensuring Brexit Means Brexit: As pledged the day after the EU referendum, I’ve consistently voted to give our Prime Minister the power to trigger Article 50 and leave the European Union. I will fully support our Prime Minister to get the best deal for Britain in her negotiations with the EU. 6. Protecting our NHS: As a child, I was born with Spastic diplegia, and without the help of Great Ormond Street, I would never have been able to walk. I’ll always be passionate about our NHS. The NHS in West Essex received £371.6 million in 2016/17, a 6.32% increase. By 2020, Essex will also receive £49.9 million of additional funding for social care. We also now have 27 more doctors and 35 more nurses looking after local residents than in 2010. I’m working hard to get a new hospital in Harlow and I’ll keep working hard to get the investment we need. I love Harlow & our villages. I will fight for Harlow, I will champion Harlow, and I will always work hard for residents. Best wishes, Robert

phil waite - labour’s candidate for harlow in the 2017 general election
I’m pleased to have the opportunity to introduce myself to you in advance of the general election. These are challenging times and none of us should underestimate the power we hold to determine the future of this country, our town and the lives of those we love when we vote on June 8. I’d like to tell you some of the reasons why I believe that voting for me as your Labour
Phil and his wife Anita
Party representative is in the best interests of each of these. Firstly, I’ve lived and worked in Harlow with my family for over 30 years. My children are currently or have all been through Harlow’s schools. My wife, Anita is a secondary school teacher in the town and my Dad has used PAH recently and the local social care system. My eldest two children would like to leave home but that raises all kinds of challenges for them and for us as their parents. So I understand the challenges of the “sandwich generation” – those of us who are bringing up children and looking after our elderly parents. I know how important it is that we have education, health and social care systems that support us and I’m absolutely committed to ensuring that Harlow gets the investment in each that it so desperately needs.
Secondly, I’ve spent the last 30 years working in Harlow. I started out at the Playhouse as a stage manager and from there moved to Tesco where I worked in both retail & distribution for nearly 20 years. During that time, I supported colleagues to stand up for their employment rights which led to my current job as a union official for Usdaw (Union of Shop Distributors and Allied Workers). This brought me to politics which I have been involved in locally for the last 10 years, five of them as a councillor for the Toddbrook ward. As you’d expect, I’m passionate about Labour pledges to ban zero hours contracts guaranteeing every worker a minimum number of paid hours, to raise the minimum wage to the level of the Living Wage (expected to be at least £10 per hour by 2020), to increase paid paternity leave to four weeks and to scrap

the public sector pay cap. Why should the government’s books be balanced on the backs of our hard working teachers, police men and women and nurses? And finally, I hope you’ll vote for me because Labour’s election manifesto contains policies which will transform the lives of you and your family. For example, under Labour’s free childcare plan, free universal childcare will be extended to 30 hours a week for all 2-4 year olds. High quality early years education will bridge the gap between maternity leave and full time school and we know that it’s those years that are most important for children. We’ll invest £2.7 billion to ensure that childcare places exist to meet families’ need for them. This will benefit families but it will also benefit everyone because it will boost the economy. The other area I wanted to touch on is education. Passmores Academy was built by the previous
Labour government. Over the next two years, it’s set to lose £1.5 million in planned budget cuts – this will inevitably impact teaching numbers, facilities and care provision. If a Labour government is elected, these cuts will be reversed and we will not lose the 130 teachers we are currently on track to lose across the town. And how will these and other pledges be funded? We’ll fund them by an increase in corporation tax (why should shareholders grow wealthy while our health and education systems crumble?) and a small tax increase on the top 5% of earners. Realistically this will affect only a very small percentage of Harlow residents but will benefit every single one of us. I encourage you to take the time to read our manifesto and I hope that when the time comes, you’ll vote Labour and vote for a country which is run for the many not the few.
Phil’s pledges to Harlow if elected 1. Harlow will be a safe town with more police and PCSOs back on our street 2. We’ll have better housing, tougher rent controls and tenants’ rights will be protected 3. We’ll invest in our education system to ensure it offers our young people the best start in life 4. Princess Alexandra Hospital will be replaced by a new hospital offering the highest levels of care and many job opportunities 5. Harlow will be a fair town in which people are properly paid for the work they do

Charity headshave & hair dye The Rotary Club of Harlow was pleased to organise a “fun” fundraising event in which five “volunteers” agreed to have their hair shaved off or colour dyed. The event took place back in April when nine participants took over The Cutting Edge hair salon in the High Street, Old Harlow courtesy of Emma Stillwell. Around £1500 was raised in total which was split between various local charities, including: No Child Without - which supports children who have financial difficulty getting sports equipment for school

harlow museum & Harlow arts council present The Art of the garden party 2017 It’s summer and for Harlow Museum and Harlow Arts Council that means only one thing – it’s time for the annual Art of the Garden Party. Taking place on Sunday 2 July from 1pm – 4.30pm it’s now the fifth year running that CEO of Science Alive Jon O’Connor and his team have welcomed many of the town’s performing arts groups and the local community into the museum gardens for a free afternoon of song, music and dance. The idea for the afternoon began in 2011 when Harlow Arts Council decided to run a small Arts Festival to promote the vibrancy and diversity of arts across the town. As the Festival increased in size, HAC wanted the opportunity to bring its members to the community without any cost to the audience, making the afternoon truly accessible to everyone. The Museum presented a perfect venue with its beautiful walled gardens, and a unique environment for the groups to perform in. This year, as part of the town’s 70th anniversary celebrations the afternoon has a bumper crop of Choirs performing a range of classic and contemporary pieces. Harlow Chorus which is itself celebrating its 40th anniversary of choral singing makes its only outdoor appearance of the year. Also performing will be de Merc Choir whose a cappella repertoire ranges from the 16th century through to contemporary works. New Edition will be performing a selection of
songs from their recent series of concerts ‘Celebrating Seventy’ whilst Harlow Community Choir bring their range of rock, pop and film soundtracks to the gardens. The breadth of dance will be highlighted with performances by Harlow Ballet and street dance group Hip Hop Pop. There will also be Rock with the youngsters from Harlow Rock School, Roll with a display by local gymnastics group Gymkats and plenty of laughter and audience involvement with drama group Razed Roof. Local Poet and HAC Chair John Steer, who will be writing a 70th celebration poem especially for the day, summed up the Garden Party: “It’s an afternoon of sitting back and relaxing in the midst of the Museum Gardens, Harlow’s own oasis of tranquillity. Harlow has embraced the arts throughout its 70 years and the garden party is the ideal time not only to show the amazing talents of our home grown performers but also for the local community to enjoy such a wide range of the arts in one afternoon.” Art of the Garden Party, Sunday 2 July 1-4,30pm Entrance Free. Harlow Museum Gardens, Muskham Road, off First Avenue Refreshments available to buy or bring your own picnic. Chairs will be available but due to limited numbers please bring a picnic rug or folding chair if you have one.

threats to wood Woodworm This is the common name for several woodboring beetles that lay eggs in crevices of woodwork. The eggs hatch out as larvae that tunnel their way through the wood. The adults emerge as beetles through ‘wormholes’ on the surface, and lay eggs so that the life cycle is repeated unless checked. Treatment: Proprietary products are effective if used repeatedly until no fresh holes or tell-tale powder is seen. Some timbers, for example pine, walnut, elm and beech, and most sapwoods, are more vulnerable than others. Mahogany and teak are virtually immune. In general, it is best to avoid pieces that are badly riddled, but it is difficult to furnish a home with antiques – or even with modern furniture – without incurring the risk to some extent. Keeping furniture clean and well-polished helps to remove the eggs. The main problems encountered when treating woodworm are identifying the species involved, deciding whether the infestation is still active, and deciding which timbers have been structurally weakened and need replacing. All of these factors will influence the type of treatment carried out (if any). For this reason, we would recommend that a survey is carried out by an experienced member of staff from The Abbey Group/Abbey Antiques whenever an active woodworm infestation is suspected. Pub & café Walks
Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Summer in Pishiobury Pishiobury Park is especially beautiful in summer and the nearby riverside paths take you along the cool banks of the Stort. Cross the road outside the Harlow Mill pub and follow the path along the right bank of the River Stort for a mile, past Feakes Lock. Cross over the next footbridge and go on along the far bank until you reach a post with yellow arrows. Turn left here, on long wooden walkway through marshland and tree tunnel. Go through a gate and keep straight across a field. Go through two more gates and continue among the trees ahead. Eventually, a final gate leads out into open parkland. Walk left along an avenue of large trees. This is the “Oak Walk”, whose original trees dated back to the 15th century. As you reach the end of the avenue, carry on in the same direction through a gate onto a fenced path. Cross a small road and keep straight. Turn right immediately after a stream, soon bearing left to rejoin the river and turn right along it. Keep on past riverside flats to return to Harlow Mill. Tilly is a lovely, lively young cat. She was born with an eye defect which means she is partially sighted but his does not stop her from chasing her toys and playing like any other young cat. We are looking for a very special owner and home for Tilly. She is playful and loves attention but also likes to do her own thing. To enable her to live life to the full we are looking for a home with an enclosed secure garden to explore so that she's restricted to that area. Like all our cats, Tilly is neutered, vet-checked, deflead and wormed, and comes with 4 weeks' free insurance. To adopt Tilly or one of our other cats, or to find out more about our work, do get in touch.

Our chosen charity streets2homes Why our annual sleepout event is so important Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes
We are still collecting donations from our Sleep Out held on Friday 26th May 2017 which was a huge success. There is still time to show your support for the event and those brave participants who slept out by making a donation online through our local giving page (details below). By doing so, you are helping us to help people like Mr H regain their confidence, dignity and build a future. Mr H’s story is below.
“
When I became homeless and first arrived at the centre I was scared and unsure of what to do or expect but as soon as I entered I was relieved at what was on offer – I had never been homeless before and hadn’t showered for 2 days and was feeling really low. I got a warm welcome as I walked through the door and immediately felt at ease. After completing some paperwork I was shown where to go to get a drink and shower and asked if I would like something to eat and some clean clothes for which I was very grateful for – they made it feel a little less humiliating, like it was normal. They gave me a tent, sleeping bag and other essentials to get through the night. The more I used the centre the more confident I became. Also after a short time they helped me to find a room and helped me with the deposit and all the forms and even helped me get some bits together. Even though I was housed I still went to the centre to join in the job club and help out at the centre to help others who were in the same boat as I was not too long ago. I managed to get a paid job and had to leave volunteering at the centre and all the ongoing support and help from all at Streets2Homes has given me hope and meaning to carry on without them I am really not sure where I would be.

Harlow Chorus This Sceptred Isle – A Summer Prom of English choral favourites Words by Mick Rumens
We have been rehearing our programme for the final concert of our 41st season, which will be performed at St Michael’s Church, Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday 15th July at 7.30pm. The works are by familiar English composers, Elgar, Rutter, Stanford, Sullivan and Percy Grainger, plus Handel’s famous Coronation anthem Zadok he Priest. The concert will close with a traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’ Finale. Peter Broadbent has provided enormous support in our rehearsals of Edward Elgar’s From the Bavarian Highlands and the various Part-songs, folk-songs and Madrigals which make up this very entertaining and harmonious collection. He has been a very special inspiration to us all and I’m sure this will be evident throughout the evening. Elgar was inspired to compose his work after he and his wife had enjoyed a holiday in the Bavarian Highlands, and the songs in the work evoke the scenes he remembered from their visit.
Among the part-songs is a very beautiful, gentle work by the English composer, Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame), called The Long Day Closes. He wrote this in 1868 and it is by far his most famous song. This, in complete contrast to the ‘explosive’ Zadok the Priest by Handel, which he composed in 1727 for the coronation of George II and has been sung during the anointing of every British monarch since. We shall also be performing a very familiar song for many, Percy Grainger’s Country Gardens, whilst John Rutter’s Birthday Madrigals have a slightly American flavour to them. No Proms Finale would be complete without Land of Hope and Glory, so, if you are coming then bring your flags with you. During May and into early June, the Chorus will be ‘auditioning’ the short list of 6 candidates for the position of our permanent Musical Director from next season. We will, hopefully, have an announcement in the July or August edition.

st clare hospice open gardens bbc one show gardener set to open st clare hospice garden St Clare Hospice’s 23rd annual Open Gardens weekend has been given a boost by BBC One Show gardener Christine Walkden, who has lent her green-fingered hands to the cause. Christine, who is a Patron of the Hastingwood-based charity, will be officially opening the hospice’s own garden to the public for the two-day horticultural event. The ever-popular gardening event was founded in 1994 by a group of hospice supporters in Harlow, led by Anne Gould. Held every year in June, the event offers the perfect opportunity for lovers of all things flora and fauna to explore some of the best-kept green spaces in the St Clare catchment area. The 2017 Open Gardens weekend is being held on 24 and 25 June and more than 20 gardens across Uttlesford and Harlow will be opening to the public in aid of St Clare. New for 2017, the hospice will be opening the gates of their own garden and welcoming members of the public. Christine Walkden will be officially launching the Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 24 June at the hospice in Hastingwood.
Christine continued: “I am delighted to be officially launching St Clare’s Open Gardens weekend and it is a pleasure to be able to welcome members of the public into the hospice’s own garden this year. It is wonderful to share this hidden-gem with the community around St Clare – rather than keeping it concealed behind the hedges. We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful corners of Essex and as a passionate horticulturalist I can’t think of a better way to help raise vital funds for our local hospice than by visiting the magnificent gardens of the St Clare catchment area.” Entry to all the participating gardens is by brochure only. They cost £5 each and contain all the details and locations of the gardens that will be open over the weekend. Brochures are for sale from St Clare Community Fundraiser Dani De’ath, details below left.
Christine Walkden, who is best known as the resident gardening expert on the BBC’s The One Show said: “One of the things our patients and visitors tell us again and again when they come to St Clare is how much they appreciate having access to the Hospice’s beautifully maintained grounds. The St Clare gardens are an oasis of calm and offer a secluded haven for our patients and their families to spend quality time together and make memories they will always treasure.”

fundraising for st clare Sliding down the corkscrew tunnel slide winding around the orbit at the Olympic Park.
LT LANDSCAPES
On Saturday 22nd July at 11.15 am It is the world’s highest, longest and fastest tunnel slide. I volunteer for St Clare Hospice. The Hospice gives free specialise care to terminally ill and end-of-life patients. They need funds to carry out the free loving work they do for patients. Patients and their families are given loving support and care. The NHS gives a little help, but the rest of the money has to be raised through intense fund-raising. I am therefore sliding down the Orbit to raise money for our Hospice. You could donate by going on my donation page or by sending me a cheque made out to St. Clare Hospice, but posted to me at my home address. Thank you. Goolmohr Cantel.
