WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The july edition of the cm17 connection I’m chuckling to myself as I type this - do I dare mention that we are now into the second half of the year? I’ve spoken to so many people that are just as mystified as me - why does it seem that time flies so much faster as you get older?! Oh, to be young again and experience the endless days of summer! Back to the present, it is indeed summer (if for only a blink of an eye!) and the outdoor events are in full swing - it’s lovely that we have so many to choose from right on our doorstep! Not least the carnival that the Council have organised to celebrate Harlow’s 70th birthday this year! (Turn to page 18 for full details.) This event promises to be a fun celebration of all that is Harlow and, who knows, the Council may decide to make it an annual event just like it used to be way back when... Who needs to travel to Glastonbury or the IOW Festival when you have Epping Forest Rotary club’s annual “The Gig in the Garden” just up the road at Acreage on Harlow Common? Turn to page 21 to order your tickets... be quick! Finally, you may remember that at the end of May I took part in Streets2Homes Sleepout 2017 and am very proud to say that through your support I raised £596! Thank you so very much! For a full account of the event turn to page 10. Until next month, Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear residents, I want to thank the many Harlow and village residents who kindly voted to reelect me as your Member of Parliament. Serving as your MP is an honour I will not take for granted. I promise to keep up the hard work. The issues I campaigned on during the election will remain my priority in Parliament: building an even better Harlow, championing Apprenticeships and education, cutting the cost of living, to cherishing our villages, protecting our NHS and ensuring that we get the best deal for an independent Britain as we leave the European Union. This year’s Queen’s speech was important to help unify our country, ensure we get the best deal for an independent Britain as we withdraw from the EU and to help some of the most vulnerable in our society. I welcome the Queen’s Speech as it set in motion Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union. There will be new legislation to set in train control over our own boarders and laws. The Queen has confirmed the Government’s intention to protect investment in the NHS, schools and other vital public services.

The speech also set out important measures to help those in rented accommodation. The Government will stand up for those renting their homes by prohibiting landlords from charging “letting fees”. The Government will also help the most vulnerable as it looks to strengthen laws against domestic violence. New measures will include stopping the cross-examination of victims by their perpetrators in court and establishing a Domestic Violence and Abuse Commissioner to support victims. As always, please get in touch is there is anything I can support or help you with. I hope you’ve all been enjoying the sunshine! Very best wishes, Robert

Special feature

local business people in person Name and Business: Bradley Goodman co-director of Harlow Garden Services Ltd.

Where do you live? We moved from Church Langley to Manuden about a year and a half ago, to a lovely 17th Century cottage. What’s your favourite local shop? When I am in Old Harlow I like going to Fine. They sell all different beers and wine, a nice treat for the weekend. What’s your favourite local venue? This would have to be Mayfield Bakery as their cakes and bread are amazing.

I set up my business because… I have always wanted to go down the path of horticulture/landscaping and running my own business from the age of about 12. I first started growing plants and selling them locally and I then completed a degree in Horticulture and Landscape Management. I set up the business with my business partner 11 years ago and we have steadily grown the business.

What do you like best about Harlow? I love how green it is for a town and the people are friendly. I am a little biased as I am from Harlow and my business is based there. This year will be an exciting year with the Harlow 70th anniversary.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? We recently won an award from one of our suppliers, The Natural Paving Company, for the Best Garden Patio - this is a National award and it will be in next year’s brochure - we were really chuffed!

What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love spending time with my family, either walking our dogs or doing the allotment with my daughter.

Favourite one liner? It’s always hard to think of something like this but how about - Velcro? What a rip off!

Our chosen charity streets2homes

Raising the roof for homeless awareness Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes

Streets2Homes would like to say a big thank you to all 25 participants who were brave enough to take part in the sleep out in the church grounds of St Mary-at-Latton in Harlow on 26th May. We were all kept safe overnight under the watchful eye of our five-security staff; a luxury those who are actually homeless do not have. Thankfully, we also had use of the church hall toilets which again is not a luxury afforded to those who are sleeping rough every night. The weather was kind to us as it was a relatively warm and dry night, imagine how unpleasant sleeping outdoors would be in bad conditions! We had it pretty easy by comparison, but still everyone was looking forward to going back to the comfort of their own home. Volunteers from St Mary-at-Latton were up bright and early and in the church hall from 6am to put on a wonderful English breakfast for us, filling our tummies before we were all homeward bound. Another luxury our homeless don’t get and one for which we were all very grateful indeed. Thank you so very much St Mary-at-Latton church for hosting us again. Thank you to everyone who supported and sponsored the efforts of those who took part – we have raised an amazing £3,740.25 and we still have money coming in too!

It was such a pleasure to see our work so fully supported and to meet those who were taking part; some for the first time and some familiar faces who have joined us every year. This year, we welcomed a group from the Herts and Essex Community Farm, two reverends (one who slept all night in his collar!) a couple of dad and daughter duos and many other wonderful members of the community including CM Connection’s very own Lorraine Perry. Most of us are lucky enough not to know what it feels like to sleep rough night after night. Our annual sleep out replicates just a tiny part of the overall experience, but crucially it raises money so we can help our homeless community. The sleep out just reinforces how important our services are, how lonely and dangerous the still of the night can be and how lucky I am to have a home; how lucky we all are.

The Gallery at Parndon Mill

open studios In this idyllic setting, over twenty studios offer an insight into the creative process and the opportunity to participate in craftwork. An amazing diversity of talent and skills are nurtured at Parndon Mill and will be on view during the Open Studios event. As well as the fine arts, craftwork in glass, weaving, calligraphy, guitar making, ceramics, jewellery, printing and metalwork can be seen here this weekend. There will also be an insight into architectural skills and the work of graphic and product designers. The artists, craftspeople and designers will talk about their work and demonstrate their techniques. There will also be opportunities to “have a go” at many of the crafts. Glass blowing is especially exciting and can result in taking away a bauble or a vessel. New this year will be an Art Play Tent for children. Deana Kim Page invites every child at any age to join her ART ANGELS to create a masterpiece! Also for children, and adults, Chris Lydamore will present a Pottery Throw Down. It will be a privilege to listen to Richard Ove Stokkereit playing one of David Rouse’s classical guitars in his studio from time to time during the weekend. Examples of the work of most of the participating artists will be exhibited in The Project Space on the ground floor and will hopefully tempt viewers to make the climb to the top floor of the mill. Celebrating Harlow being 70 years old this year the exhibition in The Gallery is PICTURE HARLOW showing paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints depicting various aspects of Harlow. Refreshments will be available throughout the weekend.

PETS

pets; Beware Of Ticks When Walking Your Dog Ticks pose a serious health risk to your dog during the summer and early autumn months, particularly if you take them for walks through bracken and heather. If your dog has a long coat, a tick will barely be noticeable on the skin, so it’s important that you physically check their body when you finish your walk. What does a tick look like? Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures that attach themselves to a ‘host,’ and feed on their blood. Once they start to feed, the tick increases in size and becomes more noticeable to the human eye. Although it’s tempting to pull a tick from your dog, part of it is likely to remain under their skin which can have serious health consequences in the months that follow. You can buy a dedicated tick remover from your local pet shop or veterinary practice.

Although other methods of removing ticks exist, tick removers allow you to twist and pull the tick from your dog, bringing the entire body away. Why are ticks dangerous to your pet? Ticks cause Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, in dogs, but signs of illness don’t commonly appear until several months after they have been bitten. Symptoms include: • High fever. • Loss of appetite. • Swelling of the joints. • Swollen lymph nodes. • Lethargy. Once diagnosed, a prolonged course of antibiotics can be used to fight the infection, but some dogs may continue to experience recurring symptoms throughout their life.

great & little hallingbury flower show celebrating its 79th year It’s amazing to think that the Great and Little Hallingbury Flower Show is now in its 79th year. It is a unique event which celebrates village life and offers a whole host of family entertainment, shopping and delicious food and drink. We usually welcome about 1,000 people each year. As many of you will know our visitors love looking around the Exhibitors’ Pavillion which contains the finest blooms, vegetables and fruit our local growers have to offer. For enthusiastic photographers there is a photography section as well as classes for flower arrangements, cookery, needlework, handicraft. We also have a whole section of 10 classes for children ranging from a creature made from vegetables to collage and decorated biscuits to handwriting. There is a section for W.I.s or other similar groups or why not try your hand at making a Scarecrow. The more entries the better and there is something for everyone so please do enter something. There are cups for the winners in each class. One of our hard working committee has been busy buying up all the local supplies of pretty, old fashioned tea cups and saucers so the Vintage Tea Tent will have a new look. It is always a very popular meeting spot for families to regroup and enjoy some tea and a slice of delicious homemade cakes. For the lunch crowd we have a Hog Roast serving local pork in buns and a veggie option. There are main arena events including dancing, music from the Bishop’s Stortford Ukulele Society and the famous and hard fought tug of war between the two villages of Great Hallingbury and Little Hallingbury.

There are trade stands around the showground selling plants and other wares and lots of fun activities for all the family such as face painting, hook a duck, and a bouncy castle, plus more. It is a great day out for all the family and everyone is welcome.

We are currently really interested in making the shopping experience even better so if you or a friend have lovely things to sell then we would like to hear from them. Also, if anyone would like to volunteer to help on the day and run a stall, that would be much appreciated. Schedules are available at the Little Hallingbury Post Office and on the website or if you contact us at oriel@hallingburyflowershow.com we can email you a pdf. Harlow Chorus New musical Director appointed to commence in the New Year 2018 Words by Mick Rumens

The Chorus committee and members auditioned the final six applicants, in June. Each selected applicant had the opportunity to conduct an hour long ‘rehearsal’ so that the members could assess their performance, and their suitability from a personality point of view. It was a very interesting procedure, a long established method used by most choirs to choose a new director best suited to their established performances. Certainly this was something of a trial for some of the candidates, but they all approached the challenge to the best of their abilities. The successful candidate, by a clear margin was, Edward – Rhys Harry, who works across the UK and internationally as a voice coach, adjudicator, composer, arranger and choral director. Coming from Penclawdd, on the North Coast of the Gower Peninsular, he was employed at the age of 14 as an organist and also began conducting rehearsals for choirs in local chapels and churches. He studied Choral Conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, where he graduated with an MA degree. He has had many compositions published by Boosey and Hawkes, Banks Music Publications, Curiad Cyl (in Wales) and

Chichester Music Press. He is consultant vocal coach for Volgograd Opera House Chorus in Russia and is the Artistic Director of ‘Voces Volgograd’ – an Anglo-Russian Choral Festival. Edward is no stranger to media work having directed performances for many TV channels and appeared in numerous programmes, which included the Bob Brydon Christmas Show where he conducted Bryn Terfel with the London Welsh Male Voice Choir. He is Musical Director of London Welsh Chorale, Reading Festival Chorus, the Atheneum Singers of Warminster, and the London Welsh Male Voice Choir. He directed the Festival of Male Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall, in 2012, 2014, and 2016. Due to his many commitments he will be joining us in January 2018 when a new chapter in Harlow Chorus will begin. Our major concert on 11th November with the Saffron Walden Choral Society, Benjamin Brittain’s War Requiem, will be performed in Saffron Hall, a recently built modern concert hall.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING STICKY BARBECUE CHICKEN WINGS 1 kg chicken wings 8tbsp tomato ketchup 2tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3tbsp smooth mango chutney 2tsp Dijon mustard 1tbsp sunflower oil

FOR THE DIP 150ml soured cream 2 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 1tbsp fresh snipped chives

Chicken wings are a great budget buy and perfect for a TV dinner or speedy supper. Serve with a home-made coleslaw or rice salad for a more substantial meal.

1. Preheat the oven to 200C, 180 fan, gas 6. Place the wings on a metal rack set over a roasting tin and roast in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, make the sticky glaze by mixing together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mango chutney, mustard and oil in a small bowl. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Remove the roasting tin from the oven and liberally brush the glaze all over the chicken wings. 4. Return the roasting tin to the oven and roast the wings for a further 15-20 minutes until the wings are golden brown and slightly charred in places. 5. Mix together the dip ingredients in a small bowl. Serve with the chicken wings.

TIP: You can cook the wings on a hot barbecue for an al fresco supper. It’s best to cook them in the oven for the first 15 minutes then glaze and just place them on the barbecue for the last 15-20 minutes of cooking time.

The Henry Moore Primary School Sing Up Day 2017

The Henry Moore Primary School has been celebrating all things musical! On Thursday 15th June, the children and staff celebrated National Sing Up Day, which coincided with BBC Music Day. Each year group took on a different genre of music, finding out about its history, dressing up in the style of each genre and performing a song in front of the rest of the school. Reception took on rock music, Year 1 delved into the wonderful world of the west end and Year 2 showed us rap and hip hop at its finest! In Key Stage 2, the Year 3 children boogied on down to disco, while Year 4 used their talents for playing instruments to learn more about big band and swing music. Year 5 went a little bit country and Year 6 stole the show with their rendition of ‘Thriller’ for the pop genre. Some of the children made posters, while others created beautiful works of art. Some even created their very own versions of famous songs, changes the lyrics through composition. The children also took part in quizzes, including a Disney name-that-tune activity that had us all singing along! It wasn’t just the children taking part either! Teachers and staff came as many famous faces and took part in singing and dancing with the children. It was a fantastic day, filled with excitement, laughter and learning.
