HELLO AND WELCOME TO The august edition of the cm17 connection
CONNECTION
It’s the summer holidays! Well, it is if you have children or are helping with childcare! I’m hoping the weather continues to be “summery” and we can all enjoy some outdoor activity. All of the events and indeed local businesses featured in this magazine are what makes our Town unique; they won’t be found anywhere else. That’s why it’s so important to keep supporting local where possible. Just think you probably know the business owner or see them out and about or at a local event - they could even be the one organising it! Local establishments, in turn, want to support other local businesses and community groups; it’s the “circle of community” life if you will! So, let’s keep on keeping it local and keep the Town thriving!

I’m hoping that many of you are now aware that the planning application to put a “bus gate” on (Old) London Road between the Chase and Mark Hall Sports Centre was successful. If you think it’s an ill-conceived plan and would prefer to see the road remain open, until at the very least J7A is completed to assess any impact then, please write to Cllr Ian Grundy, Glenwood, 5 Thornton Place, Stock, Essex CM4 9NQ, or email: cllr.ian. grundy@essex.gov.uk with the title - Newhall Phase 2 Highway Works. If you have received your hand delivered letters from Cllrs Tony Hall and Joel Charles they some suggested paragraphs to help you formulate your response.
5 Robert Halfon - working hard for Harlow
On a personal note, the #DontCloseOLR campaign has been an affirming experience, our community has come together like I’ve never experienced. On behalf of Colin, Wendy and I (#DontCloseOLR Facebook group), thank you for delivering the letters, for your opinions (for and against), suggestions and video’s. Thank you too to the local councillors that are in this with us and a special thanks to Lee McCartney for designing the campaign logo and poster! In a nutshell, you’ve all been amazing! Let’s keep the momentum going!

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear residents, The closure of (Old) London Road will cause huge amounts of unnecessary inconvenience to local residents and seems a madcap idea. There is absolutely no need to close this road and I thank all the residents who have raised objections. I have been stepping up the campaign in Parliament by tabling a Commons motion and subsequently raising the issue with the Leader of the House. You can read the motion that I submitted to Parliament below: EDM 155 tabled by Robert Halfon That this House expresses concern over the decision taken by Harlow District Council to close London Road to motorists, restrict traffic with a bus gate and split the community in two; notes the record number of 409 objections to the planning application and 2,000-plus residents who have joined a protest group; understands that this road has been used as a primary route for residents to access health, educational and leisure services for over 20 years; and calls on the Government to investigate the decision that the local authority has taken to close this vital connection and encourage Essex County Council to reject this Traffic Regulation Order from the planning decision. Following this motion and raising my objection with the Leader of the House of Commons, I have also written to Essex County Council, Harlow Council and the Transport Minister to voice my concern and see whether this decision can be over turned. I will continue to stand up for residents and motorist who will be unfairly affected by this. As well as campaigning against the closure of (Old) London Road, I have also been elected Vice Chair of the parliamentary group for Fair Fuel for Motorists and Hauliers. Under Conservative Governments, fuel duty has been frozen since 2011 when it was cut instead, something I campaigned hard for. This freeze has saved an average of ÂŁ130 a year for car drivers and ÂŁ350 a year for van users. I look forward to working hard with FairFuel UK to get a fair deal for hard pressed motorists. Very best wishes, Robert

Where do you live? I live in Old Harlow. What’s your favourite local shop? TK Max as it’s like a mini department store which unfortunately Harlow is missing.
What’s your favourite local venue? Coho. The food is delicious and the staff are always so attentive and it’s only a short walk from where I live! What do you like best about Harlow? I like the community spirit in Old Harlow. Everyone looks out for each other. Strangers say hello, it still has a village feel about it. The area is still green which adds to its charm. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I currently volunteer 1 day a week for ASL which is a non-profit organisation for young adults with learning difficulties. They make cards, bracelets and keyrings
my partner and family enjoying social events together. Two out of our four sons currently live abroad so time with them is limited and we have to make the most of our times together when they come home. I set up my business because… Having gone through a trauma in 2002 and suffered anxiety and low confidence. I sought the help of a counsellor/hypnotherapist which helped me greatly. I realised that hypnotherapy/counselling is a good and natural way to combat anxiety without the use of prescription drugs which can mask issues. In 2009 I qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist and now help clients with issues of anxiety, fears/phobias, weight management, confidence, stop smoking and a whole range of other conditions.

Our chosen charity Keiran’s Story Words by Keiran Mitchell, Housing & Welfare Project Coordinator at Streets2Homes
Hi, let me introduce myself, I’m Keiran Mitchell and I want to share with you how in 2012 I made the career change into support work. I began working with Harlow Youth Vision supporting vulnerable young people and then mentoring offenders with the Essex branch of SOVA, who support people in developing the skills to take control of their lives and reach their full potential. Soon after, I joined Streets2Homes as a volunteer and within a couple of weeks felt as though I had been there for years. Everything about the place felt right; I have often described coming to Streets2Homes as discovering a ‘Keiren-shaped-hole in the universe’ I was exactly where I was meant to be, I was home. I eventually began working as paid staff in the role of Outreach Worker. The team were so encouraging and supportive in my first role; we were a small team with limited space and very limited funds - I didn’t even have a desk and perched wherever I could put my laptop for a while, but we made it work and it was brilliant! I was given a surgery at Occasio House, supporting young people whose tenancies were at risk or who were facing eviction/ homelessness. It was a profound moment for me, walking into that building with briefcase as years prior, as a young homeless person, I

had walked in there with a black bin bag over my shoulder. I’ll never forget one of my first appointments when a cocky young lad sitting slouched in the chair told me “you don’t know nothing, mate.” It was an amazing privilege to reply, “let me tell you my story.” Later, I was given a full-time post (and a desk!) which evolved into my current role - Housing & Project Coordinator. In my job, I am primarily responsible for overseeing the Deposit Scheme and have the joy of supporting people from the first moment of contact, right the way through to handing them a set of keys for their new home. This never gets old. I continue to meet and get to know the most extraordinary people, with unbelievable and sometimes unthinkable stories. Where we work there is something more valuable than money and twice as scarce – hope. I have the opportunity every day to see the effects of hope returning, shining into the cracks in people’s lives. It really is a very special place. I have been blessed in being given creative freedom with projects and fundraising initiatives over the years; putting together a health & wellbeing project, providing support in all areas of physical, mental & emotional, including sexual health, was a personal favorite of mine. We discovered poets, artists and dancers in our midst and confidence sored!

We also ran a ‘romance academy’ where we looked at what healthy relationships look like; it was loads of fun and very amusing. Things like ‘The Big Chill’ live music fundraiser and ‘My Story’ which explores our service users’ personal journeys to, and through, Streets2Homes, giving them the opportunity to share on video. I am blessed to be able to pitch these ideas and be given the support to run with it. More recently I have set up a ‘Property Search & Tenancy Support Workshop’ to meet the ever-increasing need for affordable housing in the private rented sector. This has proved invaluable for people who are unsure on where to start when it comes to privately renting and in providing clients with information and advice

around tenancies, rights and responsibility and housing legislation. I’ve also accessed lots of training and most notably gaining a Level 3 NVQ in Housing and a Diploma in Psychology. There is always opportunity to grow, develop and learn new skills here. The charity itself has expanded and evolved over the years and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it. We have grown into acquiring our own property, increasing staff members, accessing local authority nominations and increasing the number of private landlords working with us exponentially. The future looks bright, and there is always hope here.

The Gallery at Parndon Mill
Insight and Observation Sculpture by Gerda Rubinstein
At this time it is appropriate for The Gallery to present an exhibition of sculpture by Gerda Rubinstein to contribute to the celebration of Harlow’s 70th birthday. In 1958 Gerda moved from Amsterdam to London where in 1967 Pat Gibberd saw her work on exhibition and recommended it to the Harlow Arts Trust. She was commissioned to make City for Bishopsfield which was sited in April 1971. Other works in Harlow, bought by the Trust, include Screen outside Purford Green Infant School, Baby at William Martin Primary School and Julia at Sewell Harris Close at The Stow. She has also undertaken several commissions for the Gibberd Garden in Harlow including a portrait of Sir Frederick. The sculptures have developed from early carving in stone and then refractory brick, in which she carved negative shapes into which bronze was poured. She now concentrates on modelling in wax for small work or in clay for larger pieces, which are then cast in bronze or resin. Gerda explains: “My sculptures are almost always of people, getting my inspiration from where I live. I have also made portraits and modelled birds and animals. I hope that the work, which is generally figurative, will be self explanatory without the need for titles. Gerda’s sculptures are very popular in the town. They are familiar, well appreciated and many inspire real affection.

On your marks
get set, DON’T go!
Where did your tiny baby go? Through the love and care you give him, day by day, he’s now sitting up all by himself, strong and smiley. This is the perfect time to capture this cute 6-8month stage of life, before he’s really on the move. Milestones in months - From very first the day your baby arrived, he’s changed so much already. Together we can capture the character of your baby; the ear-to-ear smiles, the dimples and the chubby cheeks, so you always have a way to look back and celebrate those pre-mobile days. And they’re off! Almost - This is a crucial time in baby photography. In no time at all your baby will be crawling, cruising, walking and running everywhere and you will be right behind him every tiny step of the way. Grab this window of opportunity with both hands and photograph him before he becomes a speedy blur! It’s the next best thing - After newborn photography, creating characterful and timeless photographic memories of your baby at 6-8-months is the next natural milestone. This is where he’ll be engaged, happy to pose, smile, giggle and wiggle rather than run away from the camera. Capture every precious moment - Photographing a sitting baby is a very precious moment indeed - for in a matter of weeks, he will be independently mobile for many years to come. There is a last day for everything, even in a child so young and that last day of ‘just sitting’ will soon arrive. Capture the magic, create the memory and admire the artistic result forever.

become a volunteer befriender Did you know that there are people in your community who are lonely? They are often people who are isolated and can find it hard to meet others. This doesn’t just affect the elderly, it might also be parents who are at home alone; people struggling to access public transport: individuals suffering with social anxiety or those in a crowd that have that sinking feeling. We offer a face to face Befriending service and need people like you to become volunteer befrienders. We will give you training, ongoing support, pay out of pocket expenses and pay for your DBS check.
As well as working alongside someone to improve their emotional wellbeing, it is a great opportunity to learn new skills. Current befrienders tell us that they find the experience very rewarding and enjoyable. If you think this is something you could do, please get in touch, we will be very pleased to hear from you. Do something worthwhile today, become a volunteer befriender for Mind in West Essex.
Befrienders might go for a cup of tea or coffee, visit the cinema or engage in a variety of leisure activities. It is all about what you can offer and what you and the person you are befriending decide to do together to help them on their journey. We are now recruiting in Harlow and you could be just the person who could make a big difference to the quality of life of someone local. The minimum we would ask is that you could offer 1 hour a week. Having regular contact will start to help reduce that feeling of loneliness and isolation. This is a flexible service and meetings can take place at times that suit you and the person you are befriending.

Parenting
Summer of Fun By Kate Duggan
From family-friendly festivals to wet weather fun, we’ve plenty of ideas to keep the kids entertained this summer. Back to nature Fly a kite, go geocaching, build a den, explore a new trail – you don’t have to travel far or spend a lot of money to have fun outdoors. If you need some inspiration, try The National Trust’s 50 things to do before you’re 11¾ list, which is available as a free app, a printed leaflet, or a PDF. The app is particularly appealing for techsavvy kids, as it lets them record their activities and earn printable certificates. Activities range from bug hunting and playing pooh sticks to canoeing, rock climbing and orienteering. Festivals Festival season isn’t just for the grown-ups – there are plenty of family-friendly festivals to choose from, including: • Suffolk’s Latitude Festival has its own family campsite and kids’ area. Children can enjoy a whole host of activities, from pizza making to weird science. There are live shows for children of all ages, a kids’ disco, and plenty of music to dance along to. • At Camp Bestival children can learn circus tricks, be entertained by Mister Maker, Mr Tumble and Dick & Dom, jump on the world’s biggest bouncy castle, and lots more. • Cheshire’s Just So festival is specifically aimed at children and offers a ‘magical experience where art, music and literature are embedded and entwined in a beautiful and wondrous landscape.’ There’s everything from baby yoga and storytelling to dance workshops, live shows and a jelly fight! • Chagstock is rather smaller than Latitude or Bestival, but offers great value for money. An adult weekend ticket is £90, including camping, and under-12s go free. There’s a family camping area, play area, bouncy castle and various activities. Learning through play The summer holidays are not the time to worry

about spelling tests and practice papers. However, that doesn’t mean that your child can’t have fun learning a new skill, whether it’s sewing, baking or climbing trees. Many children struggle with learning how to tell the time. If yours is one of them, a Twistiti watch might help them master that particular skill this summer. Hours and minutes are brightly coloured and easy to read. There are also lots of interchangeable straps to choose from, including camouflage, animal print and stripes. Our eight year old tester said the watch made it much easier for her to work out the time, see www.twistiti.com. Wet days at home The British weather being what it is, there are likely to be some rainy days this summer. It can help to have some plans up your sleeve, so here are a few ideas: • Build a den inside. A couple of chairs or a table, a few old sheets or blankets, and a washing line with pegs are all you need. Use the den for family board games, picnics and teddy bear tea parties. • Have a treasure hunt, with a series of clues, or a scavenger hunt to find mini prizes or chocolate coins. • Make some puppets out of old socks, cardboard boxes or wooden spoons; write a play and put on a performance for other members of the family. • If you just can’t tear them away from their screens, have a pyjama party. Add pizza, popcorn and playmates and you should be able to hide out in another room for at least an hour’s peace and quiet.

Cat of the month - for adoption Smudge Harlow, Epping Forest & District Branch Smudge is about 5 years old and was rescued along with her sister Poppy, who has since been rehomed. She is a very gentle, calm lady and loves nothing more than curling up on your lap for a cuddle and a snooze. She also really enjoys playing - particularly with her dangly toy fish. Smudge will be looking for a family home, possibly with older children, and would prefer to be the only pet and be the centre of attention. She does have a treatable heart condition for which she has daily medication but it doesn’t cramp her style! Like all our cats, Smudge is neutered, vet-checked, deflead and wormed, and comes with 4 weeks' free insurance. To adopt Smudge or one of our other cats, or to find out more about our work, do get in touch.

Harlow Chorus A spirited ending to our 41st Season Words by Mick Rumens
Our final concert at St Michael’s Church, Bishops Stortford brought our latest season to an exciting close. The mixed programme, of lighter material, was very well received by our appreciative audience who joined in for the Finale of Prom’s songs, Jerusalem, Rule Britannia, and Land of Hope and Glory. Many left, as did the Chorus members, looking forward to enjoying the summer break before the start of our next season in September. We are all looking forward to beginning rehearsals for our major collaboration with Saffron Waldon Choral Society and the Choristers of Jesus College, in a joint performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, supported by the Chameleon Arts Orchestra. As mentioned last month this will be staged at the Saffron Hall on Saturday 11th November. Following this will be our Christmas family concert at St John’s, Epping before we will be welcoming our new permanent Musical

Director, Edward- Rhys Harry as we continue the season in January 2018. We would like to thank all those who have supported us in the past, and especially during this season, and hope that you will continue to come along next season and bring as many new supporters as you can. If there are any singers among you who would like to join us, we are always keen to welcome new members and will give you all the support and encouragement that we can. I have certainly never regretted joining this very friendly and talented group of singers, so come and give us a chance to make you welcome. We meet on Monday evenings at the Arts and Recreational Centre in Old Harlow, beginning at 7.30pm to 10pm. Should you require any other information about the Chorus then, please go to our website.
Wishing you all a super summer holiday.

tender loving care It’s surprisingly simple to protect and enhance hardwood’s natural beauty. All that’s needed is some tender loving care. Here are a few tips from the experts: Dust with a soft cloth by following the grain pattern of the wood. Use an old T-shirt or cheesecloth that’s been laundered to remove the sizing. Dust often to remove everyday abrasive particles from wood surfaces. Before dusting, moisten cloth lightly with water.
Wood finishes benefit from an occasional waxing or polishing. A paste wax can be applied every six before during after to twelve months. Remove old wax first with a mild non-alkaline soap and water solution. Avoid waxing gurethane-finished furniture. Fundraising canalability
an intrepid group of fundraisers chased the sun Chasing the sun is something we usually do at holiday time when the weather in this country is cold and wet. However, Jon Robbins, a volunteer with CanalAbility, and a group of his family and friends chose to Chase the Sun over a June weekend – in Herts and Essex! Leaving the head of the River Stort at Bishop’s Stortford at 10.14pm on Saturday evening they aimed to walk along the river’s towpath and arrive at Dobbs Weir before the sun came up at 3.50am on Sunday morning - a distance of some 24 kilometres. If they made it they hoped to raise £1,000 – and they did make it so a great achievement by everyone who took part. Asked why he decided to take organise the walk he told us: “My life changed when I joined CanalAbility as a volunteer. Working with a cross section of our community I suddenly realised what is important in life. Apart from being a first mate I decided I wanted to help the charity by raising some money by way of sponsorship to support their continual good work.” In line with the ethos of CanalAbility the group was made up of people of all abilities. CanalAbility Patron, Paralympian Anne Strike was excited when she heard of this challenge and agreed to take part. Anne, who supports CanalAbility in a variety of ways, saw this encounter as something very different. With so much unknown about the accessibility of the tow path for people who are, in Anne’s words,
“differently able”, she was willing to “give it a go and see how far she could travel without experiencing too many difficulties with the terrain”. Jon also needed a vehicle to transport the people from the finish point back to the start so they could pick up their cars. Bristol Street Motors of Harlow were very helpful and provided him with a MPV. And, of course, everybody needed refreshments along the way. Thanks go to Associated Beverages who kindly provided drinks and food to keep the energy levels of the walkers on a high. Jon would like to thank everybody who was involved with Chasing the Sun. It was the first time he had attempted to organise such an event and found people so helpful that he wants to do it again. The same time next year? CanalAbility is a registered charity dedicated to providing facilities for disabled people and people with special needs to enjoy boating on the river on their specially adapted canal boats.
