WELCOME

THE

CM17

HELLO AND WELCOME TO The september edition of the cm17 connection Well the summer was a bit of a damp squib wasn’t it! Did you see the advert placed in a local newspaper by Affinity Water reminding us all to be prudent with our water consumption? Oh the irony! Still, it did raise a warm smile to brighten the grey, damp and sometimes autumnal weather we experienced! As always, I’m delighted to bring local businesses and community events straight to your door. There’s lots and lots going on this September and into the autumn and it’s all local - hoorah! Have a look at the community pages and editorials in this month’s edition. There is a plethora of activities and events to keep us all happy AND busy! Many local events are run by unpaid volunteers, you may even be one of them! Sometimes they’re sponsored by local companies which is great, more often than not they’re organised and funded by people that are passionate about the cause, organisation or concept. Raising funds and/or awareness is what it’s all about and Harlow is full of these amazing people. If we can attend just one event, a fun dog show, a quiz night, a concert we will ensure that these groups, clubs, charities and facilities will be here for the next generation. That’s good right?

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear residents, I recently spoke about Harlow on a debate on New Towns in Parliament where I urged the Government to give extra support to regenerate our housing, infrastructure and town centre. I praised our town for being a place of aspiration, opportunity and achievement and also made sure that Harlow received Happy 70th Birthday wishes from the Local Government Minister responding to the debate! I thoroughly enjoyed travelling in the parade for Harlow’s Birthday Carnival on a beautiful traditional green bus organised by Arriva. I congratulate Harlow Council and everyone involved in organising the Carnival, which was a fantastic event. Well done to all those who had floats, including the Harlow Rock School, Harlow Steel Band and many more. As well as working hard for Harlow, I have also been continuing to stand up for motorists, this time against proposed taxes on diesel cars. These taxes would hit those on low incomes including thousands who use their vehicles a means to earn an honest living. What is even worse, is that it would hit those very people who bought diesel motors because Gordon Brown and the last Labour Government wrongly said they were greener vehicles. We all want cleaner cars and to cut pollution. Instead of punishing motorists, the Government should have a proper scrappage

scheme with real financial incentives. Only then should any kind of charge be considered – and any monies raised should be earmarked for extra roads, or put towards cutting fuel duty. I will keep campaigning hard for this. Motorists deserve the carrot, not the stick. I hope that everybody has had a lovely summer and have managed to enjoy some sunshine with their family and friends. Very best wishes, Robert

Cllr Joel CHARLES

Old Harlow, Churchgate Street and Newhall

keeping In Touch with you September 2017

Welcome to my community page. Every month I want to keep you informed about the key issues affecting our local community. Join the #DontCloseOLR campaign The campaign to keep Old London Road open goes on. It's great news that over 2,000 residents have joined the Facebook campaign group. Please also sign the #DontCloseOLR petition on change.org. Thanks to the efforts of hundreds of residents it seems that Essex County Council are planning to defer the decision on the bus gate until 2019. I will continue to maintain pressure on Essex County Council and ensure they understand the negative impact closing Old London Road will have on the local community. Stop Harlow North East housing development The Conservative group on Harlow Council continues to oppose more housing development between Churchgate Street and the M11. Labour recently voted to build 3,000 new homes on this site as part of their Local Plan. When this came to full Council I voted against it. I will continue to fight these plans and protect our village community from over-development. Council tenant heating repairs No new heating systems will be fitted to council homes this year because the contract for the work has been delayed. I have sought reassurances from Harlow Council that no work will be done over the winter so that tenants are not left without heating. If you are a council tenant and have concerns about your heating, please contact me. Learn more about the work I do as your local councillor by following me on Twitter – my handle is @JoelRCharles. The Gallery at Parndon Mill

artworks in glass at the gallery

Opening hours: Tuesday - Friday 10 am - 5 pm, Sunday 2 - 4 pm.

Every year The Gallery at Parndon Mill presents an exhibition of works of art in glass. This most beautiful medium can be used to make sculptured forms and vases in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, as well as useful vessels and dishes. This year’s Glasshaus XII will feature our home team, artists who have studios here at Parndon Mill, Heike Brachlow, Yuki Kokai, Jon Lewis, Margery Lovatt and Ewa Wawrzyniak along with associates Karen Murphy and James Lethbridge. They will be joined by other glass artists whom they have chosen to invite, students or helpers perhaps, or those whose work they admire. Most of the techniques of glass making will be represented in the exhibition, stained glass, kiln casting and sand casting, fusing, jewellery making and of course glassblowing. There is a “hot shop” adjacent to The Gallery and it may be possible to see action in there during the exhibition.

st james’ church scarecrow and flower Festival 2017 This event will take place in the village of High Wych, Sawbridgeworth, Herts CM21 0JB on the above weekend. This will be the second year we have run this event. Scarecrows will line the main road from The Hand and Crown PH to High Wych School and also the short stretch of road past the park up to The Manor of Groves Hotel. They will be judged by Ian, our lovely village postman. There will also be a display of 250 pairs of wellington boots filled with flowers along the route. These will be displayed the week before. The centre of the festival will be at St James’ Church – the only church in the village. There will be parking facilities in The Memorial Hall next to the church and in the school playground on the other side of the church. The churchyard will be filled with further scarecrows and craft and other stalls with a barbecue and a children’s trail. There will be further stalls inside the church where coffee, tea and refreshments can be bought. Our wonderful team of flower arrangers headed by Rosemarie will depict the theme of “Musicals” in the church. The event will be on Saturday from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday from 12 noon till 4pm. Late Sunday afternoon we will literally have a “Boot Sale” where wellington boots filled with flowers can be purchased. Anyone is welcome to make a scarecrow or it can be a character made out of different materials to straw. There are some wonderful ideas if you Google “Pinterest”. If you are going to make a scarecrow please ring Janet Bellingham on 07882 743627 or 01279 724247 (leave a message) or indeed please ring if you would like to help or have any questions regarding the event.

Our chosen charity Raising the roof for homeless awareness Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes

Streets2Homes was 10 years old on 1st August 2017! We have recently launched our new outreach service in response to the growing number of people rough sleeping in and around the Harlow. We are very lucky to have Wayne join our team and take on the role of Project Worker. One element of Wayne’s role is to visit rough sleepers who have been reported to us by the council, members of the community, local businesses and other agencies. We respond as quickly as possible but always on the same day we receive the report. Wayne will go out and speak to them and reassure them there is help at the centre with basic essential services such as shower facilities, access health care, food and clean clothes in addition to advice and guidance with benefits, finding employment and housing. The Project Worker is also responsible for supporting those who are housed to sustain their tenancy, this is a service we have

provided for some years however, as we are seeing more and more people often with complex needs we have needed to increase this service. We now have 4 paid staff members and a team of 20 volunteers and 7 Trustees who all work together to improve services for those without homes or at risk of homelessness. Our services are essential in helping those who have no other support to access the services and support they need to relieve their situation and escape a life of being on the streets. We could not do the work we do without the support of the local community of which we are always extremely grateful. If you see someone you suspect to be sleeping rough please get in touch with us by calling, report on our website or through StreetLink (a link can be found on our website). AJ’s Story “My name is AJ. I have been homeless off and on for 7 years. I got into trouble and was sent to prison. When I got out I decided to break previous ties and went to live with my aunt. I joined LCC College in Liverpool doing acting and dance during the day and took extra dance classes in the evenings. I gave this up to be with my ex-partner and children but sadly it did not work out. I ended up at Streets2Homes and living in a tent. They really helped and supported me and after 2 months they told me that I would be housed. Since then I’ve been cooking a lot and I want to get back into my dancing and carry on from where I left off. I’ve realised dancing is the only thing that makes me feel real, and I’m going to start using that. With Streets2Homes help I was connected with churches and food banks, without them I would still be on the street. If anyone is homeless they should come to Streets2Homes, they can help you like they helped me.”

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING LAMB KOFTAS WITH MINTED COUSCOUS FOR THE KOFTAS 350g lean minced lamb ½ red onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 2tsp ground coriander 2tsp ground cumin 1tsp smoked paprika 2tbsp fresh chopped coriander Squeeze of lemon juice FOR THE COUSCOUS 225g couscous 3tbsp olive oil 1tbsp lemon juice ¼ cucumber, finely diced 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 3tbsp fresh chopped mint 4 tomatoes, cut into chunks Lemon wedges and mint sprigs to garnish

This

flavour-packed dish is great for a late summer lunch or dinner. Serve with warmed flatbreads and tzatziki, if liked.

1. To make the koftas, place the mince, onion, garlic, spices, fresh coriander and lemon juice in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then process until very finely minced. 2. Divide the mixture into 12 and using clean damp hands, shape each into an oval. Push each oval onto the end of a long wooden skewer (see tip) and place on a foil-lined grill pan. Cook under a preheated medium grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently, until browned and cooked through. 3. Meanwhile, make the couscous. Place the couscous in a heatproof bowl and pour over 250ml boiling water. Cover and leave to soak for about 10 minutes, until all the water has been absorbed. Fluff the couscous with a fork and stir in the olive oil, lemon juice, cucumber, spring onions and mint. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Serve the koftas with the couscous and tomatoes, garnished with lemon wedges and mint sprigs.

TIP: Soak the wooden skewers in cold water for about 20 minutes to prevent the ends burning under the grill.

The Henry Moore Primary School Harlow Week As Harlow celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2017, the children at the Henry Moore School have been learning about the town they are growing up in. With activities ranging from interviewing residents to drawing detailed maps, each year group has learnt about Harlow from a different perspective. Trips out included a sculpture trail for Year 5, exploring the archives at Harlow Museum for Year 4 and a trip to the Gibberd Gardens for Year 1. Year 6 had the opportunity to meet and question David Devine who shared his extensive knowledge of Harlow and its origins. Celebrating Harlow has given all of the children a deeper understanding of how their town began, how it has changed and how it will continue to do so in the future.
