HELLO AND WELCOME TO The october edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

We’re on to the last quarter of the year! I love the changes that each season brings but I am particularly partial to autumn! I just love the colours: rusts, reds, yellows and oranges - I’ve been told that they’re my “colours” so perhaps that’s why I feel an affinity for them... who knows.

october 2017 ISSUE 145

We are really fortunate to be surrounded by countryside and woodland and also have the horticultural delights of our Town Park, Parndon Wood Nature Reserve and The Gibberd Gardens. The latter have events which provide us with the opportunity to really immerse ourselves in the autumnal colours, turn to the community pages to find out more!

CONTENTS

Herts & Essex Community Farm are holding a “Spooky Sunday” event which gives us another opportunity to get out and about before winter starts taking a hold and makes outdoor activities a little more challenging. Or, if you prefer an indoor activity, I’m told that “Pirates are coming!” to St John’s Arc on Sunday 29th!

11 Cllr Joel Charles

Finally, don’t forget that British summer times ends on Sunday 29th October. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour at 2am!

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear readers, I recently spoke in a debate on the waiting times for autism diagnosis, where I called for lower waiting times and more support for individuals and their families during and after the diagnosis process. It was a very important debate. The diagnosis process for those with autism is incredibly complicated and can go on for years. I want there to be guidelines that are properly enforced to make sure that every person with autism can access the diagnosis and support that they need, quickly and efficiently. During the debate, I praised the work of Milwards Primary and Passmores Secondary schools, which both have specialist autism units in Harlow, as well as the work of Harlow charity PACT for Autism and Essex County Council’s specialist teaching team. I am delighted that as a result of this debate, Health Minister, Jackie DoylePrice MP confirmed that autism diagnosis waiting times will start to be recorded and published so that Harlow families can get a better service. There is more good news for Harlow families as well, as the Government announced new investment in schools, something I have been campaigning on

for a long time. For too long, the funding formula meant schools across the country received disparate levels of funding, unrelated to the needs of the school and pupils. I am pleased to see that the extra ÂŁ1.3 billion will not only maintain the overall budget in real terms but will provide extra funding for a per-pupil cash increase for every school in Harlow and across the country. Lastly, I will be holding my 6th Annual Harlow Jobs Fair on Friday 3 November at the Harlow Leisurezone. The Jobs Fair will run from 10-4 and will be attended by a wide variety of exhibitors and job seekers. It is completely free to exhibit and attend so please do get in touch with my office on halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com or 020 7219 7223 if you would like any more information. I hope to see you all there! Very best wishes, Robert

St Clare want your furniture give your furniture a new home with st clare Have you got a leather sofa looking for a new loving home? Or how about a dining room table and chairs that are just not getting the use they deserve? St Clare has the answer! The Hastingwood-based hospice runs a free furniture collection service across West Essex and the borders of East Herts, the catchment area of the charity, and the sale of donated furniture in their eight shops raises approximately £100,000 every year. The charity is looking to grow this, by offering a new easy way to sign-up for a collection online, and by launching a furniture donation-drive across their patch. St Clare Hospice’s Head of Retail, Fiona Eaton, said: “Donations of furniture are an absolutely vital source of income for St Clare – and help to contribute to the half a million pounds which our shops are targeted to raise each and every year. Our customers love to find a sofa in good condition, a chest of drawers which they can up-cycle, or even a divan bed and mattress in our stores. If you are looking to redecorate or have a change of style at home, please think of St Clare Hospice as your first port of call for your pre-loved, good quality furniture!” Outlining the furniture collection service, Fiona said: “We have made it easier than ever before to donate your furniture to St Clare. You can simply log on to the Furniture page on our website, check if the item you want to donate can be accepted, and pick a date to suit you. Alternatively you can call our Furniture donation number and book a slot over the phone. Our

6

van drivers cover more than 18,000 miles every year, driving around Epping Forest, Uttlesford, Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford, collecting furniture donations from the homes of generous supporters.” St Clare is particularly looking to receive donations of: sofas and armchairs; dining tables and chairs; occasional tables and quality bookcases; wardrobes, dressing tables and chests of drawers; and divans with mattresses. Please note St Clare can only accept soft furnishings that have fire labels attached. See their website for details of the items which can be accepted. To book your furniture collection, call 01279 639760 or book online.

gibberd gallery exhibition innovators in abstraction This exhibition celebrates an empathetic connection between two painters who became life long friends. It is a story that started at the stimulating institution of Edinburgh College of Art which became re-known for its exciting artists including tutor Charles Pulsford RSA and pupil Harry Anderson, working class boys from Fife who struggled for artistic expression throughout the 20th Century. Both men could have had a much larger influence in the history of 20th Century painting if not for a lack of opportunity. Now Harlow is thrilled to be showing paintings and drawings of theirs for the first time in England for nearly fifty years. Pulsford’s paintings of the 60s are re contextualised in the light of Anderson’s energetic, organic abstracts of the same period. Both artists were superb draughtsmen and considered drawing to be of paramount importance in all works of art. Contemporaries of Harry Anderson considered him a significant British artist of that generation, an early exponent of abstract expressionism. “The most important exhibition of modern art in Edinburgh for the last 20 years”, Sir Richard Demarco in opening the retrospective exhibition of Harry Anderson at the Randolph Gallery in Dundas St, Edinburgh, January 2007. Harry Anderson lived and worked in Harlow for the last 40 years of his life with a studio at Parndon Mill. He died in the summer of 2002 with an unfinished painting still wet on his easel. There are works in the Gibberd Permanent collection by Scottish artists’ who emerged during this period, including Elizabeth Blackadder and Anne Redpath.

A Talk by Mark Pulsford RSA ‘Hidden Treasures’ The Influence of Edinburgh College of Art Saturday 4th November 12-1pm Mark Pulsford will give an insight into the exciting ‘crucible of experiment and innovation’ that was the Edinburgh College of Art where his father taught in the fifties. This a free event but please book through the gallery.

Our chosen charity Streets2homes 10 years and needed more than ever Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes

Streets2Homes, Harlow’s local homeless charity, is now in its 10th year, but unfortunately there is more need for our invaluable services than ever before. During our last financial year (01/08/16 – 31/07/17) we saw 340 new clients at the centre; 70% male and 30% female - this is the highest proportion of female clients we have ever seen over the last decade with ages ranging from 18 to 79 years old but where the average age is just 35. We have also dealt with 126 telephone calls where we offered critical advice and guidance. In total, Streets2Homes has helped 466 people and many others who attended our drop-in sessions at multi-agency centres. Having served 2,024 breakfasts and 4,545 lunches throughout the year and we firmly believe that a good diet is essential to the health and wellbeing of our clients, especially when they are sleeping rough or cannot afford to buy food. Unfortunately, we were unable to help as many people into accommodation in the private rented sector as we have done in the past due to a shift in attitude where landlords in the private rented sector no longer want to rent to those on benefits. There is a sheer lack of affordable accommodation and the welfare reforms do not help our cause. Did you know that a person 35 years old or under is only entitled to shared accommodation rate of housing benefit which is on average 30% below the cost of a room in shared accommodation? This is why we want to

develop a new project to provide accommodation to lift these barriers. More positively, we did secure accommodation in the private rented sector for 55 people with a further 17 being successfully referred to supported housing schemes. 17 were reconnected with their families or friends who agreed to accommodate them and 5 were housed by the local authority. We also assisted 22 individuals to reconnect to support services in the area where they had existing and established links, enabling them to access accommodation locally and be supported by family and friends. Our prevention figures rose in number, where other pre-homeless interventions included mediation, advocacy, advice and guidance and we are pleased to have prevented a further 107 individuals from becoming homeless. The main reason for homelessness was eviction from the private rented sector; this is often due to non-payment of rent due to job loss, unrealistic rent increases and breakdown of relationships. We are urgently looking to develop projects that will help overcome the barriers to accessing accommodation, especially for those most vulnerable in our community. If you would like to support our work you can donate through our local giving page or donate supplies directly at the centre; we are always in need of clothes, toiletries, food, flasks, tents and sleeping bags and your continued support of Streets2Homes is appreciated by everyone involved.

Keep your furniture looking great Furniture is made to be used and enjoyed and accidents happen, especially when there are small children at home. Take these steps to keep damage from everyday life to a minimum: Unless your furniture has a new “super finish” to protect it, use coasters to prevent spills, stains and damage from hot dishes. Blot all spills immediately. Keep solvents, alcohol, nail polish and polish removers away from your furniture surfaces. When dusting, always lift lamps and other objects - don’t slide then across the furniture’s surface. Always lift furniture to move it - don’t drag it. Open and close doors, drawers and lids gently. With just a little TLC, genuine hardwood furniture will last a lifetime - several lifetimes, in fact. Consider grandfather’s roll-top desk: a valued treasure passed on from generation to generation. Taking good care of your solid hardwood furniture ensures its longevity. It’s easy and largely a matter of common sense. Please find enclosed some details on furniture advice and tips in terms of caring for your furniture as well as cleaning product available for your general interest/review.

20

Due to growing interest in wood care, we have adapted products to be used by people with little experience in wood finishing. Cleaning and reviving your furniture can be masteredbefore in a few minutes.during Removing old and after tired finishes and re-applying a new finish to wood is a little more complicated, but can easily be achieved with a little patience. A tin of clear wax is the best way to protect and revive your furniture or any wooden products and would last a lifetime as little is more. Free quotations and no carriage charges with this advert.

Our Clear Wax contains pure beeswax and finest carnuba wax and is silicone free. It ABAN609_90x128.5_network_ad.indd 1 will feed and revitalise all wooden surfaces including antiques, modern furniture, doors, staircases and wood panelling.

It also gives a wonderful patina to new and stripped pine. It was originally formulated over 100 years ago for furniture and antique restorers and has been used by them and customers ever since. We now stock this product range at a cost of £10.00 including VAT. Postage and package would be an additional £2.50 if required. is a fabulously quick and easy supper that is packed full of flavour. Serve with a watercress or rocket salad, if liked.

1. Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the tagliatelle and cook for 8-10 minutes or according to the packet instructions. 2. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and stir-fry the steak strips over a very high heat until browned. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes until golden then add the pepper slices and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Return the steak strips and any meat juices to the pan and stir in the crème fraiche and ground black pepper. Heat through gently. 4. Stir in the parsley and adjust the seasoning to taste. Drain the tagliatelle and divide between four warmed shallow pasta bowls. Spoon the steak mixture on top and garnish with a little more freshly ground black pepper.

TIP: Add a spoonful of wholegrain mustard with the crème fraiche for an extra piquant flavour or try a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

pact for autism

the sen charity event of the region PACT for Autism has worked tirelessly over 12 years to widen access to autism services in the East Herts and West Essex region. We take pride in our connections. Together we have built a network of support and services for autism in West Essex, and the progress we have made in supporting families, together, is commendable.

to connect with the other organisations that make it happen. The kids are growing – and so are we.

Now we face the future. Autism support for the specific needs of women with autism remains under-provisioned, and there is a steep drop in support, as well as a lack of confidence in current structures, in providing for autistic youth transitioning into adulthood, aged 18-25. In the past year alone we have been in contact with 34 organisations and influencers in the field, and the PACT for Autism Charity Ball will bring these stakeholders together. This is your chance

On your marks

get set, DON’T go!

Where did your tiny baby go? Through the love and care you give him, day by day, he’s now sitting up all by himself, strong and smiley. This is the perfect time to capture this cute 6-8month stage of life, before he’s really on the move. Milestones in months - From very first the day your baby arrived, he’s changed so much already. Together we can capture the character of your baby; the ear-to-ear smiles, the dimples and the chubby cheeks, so you always have a way to look back and celebrate those pre-mobile days. And they’re off! Almost - This is a crucial time in baby photography. In no time at all your baby will be crawling, cruising, walking and running everywhere and you will be right behind him every tiny step of the way. Grab this window of opportunity with both hands and photograph him before he becomes a speedy blur! It’s the next best thing - After newborn photography, creating characterful and timeless photographic memories of your baby at 6-8-months is the next natural milestone. This is where he’ll be engaged, happy to pose, smile, giggle and wiggle rather than run away from the camera. Capture every precious moment - Photographing a sitting baby is a very precious moment indeed - for in a matter of weeks, he will be independently mobile for many years to come. There is a last day for everything, even in a child so young and that last day of ‘just sitting’ will soon arrive. Capture the magic, create the memory and admire the artistic result forever.

The Henry Moore Primary School The Gibberd Garden As part of our Harlow 70th Birthday celebrations, Year 1 went to the Gibberd House and Garden. Sir Frederick Gibberd lived there. He designed Harlow. Here is what some of the children wrote: 1A went to the Gibberd Garden to look at the statues. We left Henry Moore Primary School at 9.30am. We went on a coach. This is what the statues are made of: bronze and metal. I saw a house. It was made out of stone. The statues are magical. The Gibberd Garden had a castle. 1A went up it. It was a long walk for our little legs. Then we had lunch and sketched some of the statues. Then we came back to Henry Moore. We left Henry Moore and we went by coach to the Gibberd Garden. When we were there we had to walk on a long road. At the end of the road we went to the café and we left our lunch there. Then the lady gave us some maps. We left the café and went to see some statues. We went up some stairs and we were on a tower. On the middle of the top of the tower there was a statue and as well there was a path. We went along it. We saw a pond with lily pads on top of the pond. We had to be quiet because we were near the house. Then in a little while we went back to the café to get our sketch book. Once we got our sketch books we went to a place to sketch some statues. When we were done sketching we went back to the café, then we started to eat our lunch. We had a little time to play before we went back to the school.

Venture Into Volunteering A lovely local charity shop would like to recruit more volunteers to help serve customers, sort and price stock, keep the shop tidy etc. If you have a half day once or twice a week to spare, this opportunity may suit you. Do you enjoy being in the kitchen? A couple of organisations would welcome an extra pair of hands to help plan, prepare and serve simple, healthy meals, mostly lunches. Volunteers don’t need to be fancy cooks, and will have the opportunity to gain a Food Hygiene Certificate. Also needed are drivers to take people who are unable to use public transport to and from appointments, either using their own car or a minibus. Full training is provided for all volunteers and out of pocket expenses are paid, and Playworkers are sought to plan, set up, run play groups in a child and wellbeing service, along with staff members. Sessions include Baby Time and Come and Play. These are just a few of the many opportunities available, if you would like to find out more, please contact Volunteer Centre Harlow.
