HELLO AND WELCOME TO The November edition of the cm17 connection
CONNECTION
CM17 is well into its 13th year now and during that time I’ve been honoured to be in a position to support new businesses and organisations with their marketing. There is nothing more satisfying than watching their growth and to have been involved in that. Every now and then I am reminded of how useful and valued my little mag is when past customers get in touch. This month there were four such customers, two of them from 10 years ago! From wanting to introduce a new service or class, to starting a completely new business, they got back in touch because it worked for them the first time. That’s kinda cool isn’t it!
november 2017 ISSUE 146
CONTENTS ■ FEATURES & ARTICLES
One such customer is the lovely Caroline Collins of Healthy Body Healthy Mind, turn to page 9 to find out why she got in touch and what she’s been up to. Another is Carole Titterton, who asked me over ten years ago if CM17 could help with setting up a “little support group” for bereaved widows and widowers. Step forward to November 2017 and GEMS has over 70 members and is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Congratulations GEMS and to Carole, without your vision and tenacity this fabulously supportive group simply would not exist. Thank you! (More on page 16.)
5 Robert Halfon - working hard for Harlow
As always, there are some really good local events to look forward to this month, including: firework displays - Harlow Town Park and Churchgate Street School to name but two, Old Harlow Traders will be having their Christmas Lights “switch on” and all associated frivolities during the evening! If you like a quiz, November seems to be THE month for charity quizzes. Definitely something for everyone.

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow
Dear Reader, Recently, I held a Westminster Hall debate on capital funding for a new hospital in Harlow. The Health Minister confirmed that Princess Alexandra’s proposal for a new hospital has been submitted and further decisions will be made after the Autumn Budget. In the debate, Health Minister Philip Dunne said, “The strategic case for change concluded that a new hospital on a greenfield site would be not only the most affordable solution but the one that would deliver the most benefit for the local population.” It was explained that because of the Harlow and Gilston Garden Town and J7a developments releasing potential development sites, Harlow is in a “somewhat unusual light in relation to other competing claims for capital on the NHS”. The Minister also noted that, “Harlow has achieved more than any other trust in securing capital to help improve the situation in its emergency department.” Philip Dunne concluded by acknowledging that the new hospital is “a high priority for the region, for the county, clearly for the residents of Harlow”. He wished Robert Halfon “every success in advancing his cause - as he has done so admirably here today - when we see the allocation of that capital following the Budget later this year.” The doctors, the nurses, the management team and support staff at the Princess Alexandra Hospital work so hard every single day but their working lives are made so much harder by the Hospital’s deteriorating facilities. As I promised in the General Election, I have been working hard to secure capital funding for a new hospital in Harlow. I am delighted to have been granted this debate to
continue working towards delivering a new Harlow health campus which would bring health care in Harlow into the 21st Century and protect our NHS for another 50 years. As outlined in the debate, there are three main issues that Princess Alexandra Hospital faces: poor infrastructure, exceptionally high A&E use, and difficulty retaining staff. A new Health Campus is the answer to each of these problems. It would mean doctors and nurses would no longer have to treat patients in deteriorating temporary structures, well past their 10-15 year life span. It could be tailored to the needs of the growing population of Harlow and the surrounding area that the Hospital serves, increasing capacity and reducing waiting times. To help with staff recruitment and retention, the Health Campus could act as a centre for degree apprenticeships in nursing and healthcare, bringing specialist training to the East Region. This would build on the strong links between the Princess Alexandra and Harlow College and capitalise on the new Anglia Ruskin MedTech Innovation Centre at the Harlow Enterprise Zone. I will keep up the hard work to ensure that residents get the healthcare they deserve. Very best wishes, Robert

Can you give this cat a home? Maxie Harlow, Epping Forest & District Branch This stunning girl is 7 years old. She loves a bit of fuss, especially around the head. B ut she is a bit shy at first, so will need her new humans to be patient and give her time to settle in. She'd be fine with older children but would be better as the only pet in the household. Unbelievably, her former owner wanted to get rid of her as she had hairballs! B eing semi-longhaired, she will need regular grooming, which she is OK with. Like all our cats, Maxie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, deflead and wormed and comes with 4 weeks's free insurance (terms & conditions apply).

LOCALs that relaunch Caroline Collins started her Personal training business, Healthy Body Healthy Mind, back in 2013. Having recently qualified in Sports Massage she is in the process of relaunching her business... What have you been up to over the last 4 years? Loads! I have met some truly amazing clients that have been with me for years. I have challenged most of them to do things they never thought possible - running 5k & 10k races, mud runs such as Nuclear Races, an “electric run” and together we raised money for Mind by competing in a mini triathlon! So why are you in locals that relaunch? After studying for the past year at Sports Therapy UK in Hertford I am now a level 3 qualified Sports Massage Therapist, so as well as offering my personal training service I am now able to offer sports massage. What was the best part of the course? Definitely getting massages pretty much all day long! My favourite day by far was massaging for McMillan Cancer at this year’s London Marathon. It was amazing; the people we met and hearing their stories, it was so humbling. It’s a day I will never forget. What are the benefits of sports massage? The prime purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension, which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. Above all, it can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether one is an athlete, enthusiastic gym person or a once a week jogger.
Tel:
Is Sports Massage just for people that exercise? Not at all. Anyone can benefit from sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs and those not quite so obvious (occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce many similar characteristics to sports injuries). So, if you are stuck at a computer all day or have a manual job and get aches and pains then you too will benefit from a sports massage. Who have you helped so far? I have a client who is running a marathon and an ultra-marathon soon and I’m helping to keep her legs in check. Recently I helped a lady who had considerable back pain after running a marathon she was so relieved afterwards to be able to move and function better! Anything else you would like to add? A lot of my clients tell me that I’m a “normal” person and that’s why they stay or return to train with me. I understand how hard it is to fit in exercise and “eat healthily” whilst being blasted by fitness models/ posts on Instagram etc but it’s not real! Real is the everyday person working 9-5 to pay the bills and looking forward to the weekends with their kids and families. Yes, obviously we need to watch what we eat and get regular exercise but as long as my clients leave me after their PT session feeling better about themselves or are in less pain after a sports massage, I’m a happy PT and therapist! Please get in touch for more information and to find out how I can help you to feel better and make lifestyle changes.

The Gallery at Parndon Mill
present arts The Gallery at Parndon Mill presents a series of exhibitions of fine art and crafts by skilled and distinguished artists. During the Christmas period, the exhibition Present Arts maintains the same high standard, but the emphasis is on works of art which are affordable. The skills of many of the artists who have studios at the Mill are represented, showing artworks in glass by Jon Lewis and Ewa Wawrzyniak, ceramics by Aila Simpson and Geli Hinton, textiles by Ayse Simsek and Connie Flynn, paintings by Chris Seaber, original prints by Liz Boast, Tanya Scott-Durrant and Kirsten Wilson and silver jewellery by Yuki Kokai. Regular exhibitors who work nearby include Margaret Gardiner whose meticulously crafted salt glazed ceramics are well known and Marilyn Andreetti whose colourfully decorated red earthenware is popular. Ruta Bartkeviute who comes from Lithuania makes pots which are very colourful, decorated with a hint of traditional European folk art. There will also be work by several artists new to The Gallery. Delightful miniature paintings by Debbie Ayles, Chrissie Richards and Jenny Cufflin depict landscape, plants, animals and buildings. Carefully made porcelain pieces by Laura De Benedettiare are useful as well as beautiful. Nick Clarke exhibits intriguing forged metal sculpture and colourful new jewellery is by Amanda Charles, also a glass artist. This exhibition is a feast for the eye and is a great opportunity to acquire a unique and special present, something new for the home, individual cards or even decorations for the Christmas tree.

Gems Widow & Widowers group GEMS is celebrating 10 years By Carole Titterton, Founder
Well I never expected GEMS to be such a success; I started the group in November 2007 after losing my Husband, Mum and dad in the first 3 months of 2007. Not sure how I did this now looking back! Hopefully, GEMS has been a lifeline to members after their loss. Bereavement comes with many feelings such as loss and anger but loneliness is also a very important part. This is where GEMS can help. The members of GEMS have empathy not just sympathy, everyone deals with their bereavement differently. GEMS is a mixed social group ageing from 50-80+ that helps people make new friendships and gives structure to help rebuild their lives. Our members arrange different events and we have around 70 members. The regular meetings are an opportunity to get out and meet new people or catch up with newfound friends. Thank you to Lorraine of CM17 who back in 2007 encouraged me to start GEMs, was the first point of contact for the initial membership enquiries and took care of our publicity and of course to the
welcoming Potters Arms where our meetings are held. Finally, thank you to everyone I have met over the last 10 years - treasure your family and friends and smile and laugh at every chance you get! Here is what some of our members say: “I feel free to talk about my feelings with the group.” “I’ve made such good friends.” “I’ve Never been out and about so much!” “I found support from other members so useful.” “The group has given me friends and a direction to cope with life. I wouldn’t have left the house without the help members have given me.” These comments are reassuring that GEMS has made a difference. Out of my sadness some good as come.

godsafe alms houses
trustee required for local charity The charity that runs the Godsafe Almshouses in Harlow is looking for someone to replace one of our long-serving Trustees who is retiring shortly. Do you have the time and skills to join us? Almshouses have an ancient history dating back to the 10th.century and have usually been established to enable people with particular needs to live in their local community. The Godsafe Almshouses are owned by Harlow Poors Charities that was formed as an unincorporated charity registered with the Charity Commission in 1959. This charity amalgamated a number of much more ancient local trusts and charities. The oldest of these dates back to 1504 and the most recent was established in 1944. The present almshouses are named after John Godsafe, who established his charity in 1840. This area of Essex was originally largely rural and employment was mainly on local farms. The original purpose of the almshouses was to provide accommodation for the widows of farm workers living in tied housing.
expertise useful to the management of the charity and the almshouses. The Trustees meet four times a year to oversee the financial affairs and general governance of the charity. We also have occasional fund raising activities, for example a Quiz Night in November this year, and some social events for the residents, for example a Christmas Coffee Morning. The Trustees are supported by a part-time paid Clerk, who is responsible for the day to day management of the almshouses. If you are interested in becoming one of our Trustees, please contact our Clerk on contactgodsafe@virginmedia.com or 01279 726833. She will than arrange for the Chairman of Trustees to meet you to explain the role in more detail.
The Godsafe Almshouses are located in Churchgate Street near to the church and comprise fourteen properties: a two bedroom house, one bedroom flats and a number of bungalows. Some of the flats are in the building that was the infant department of the original Churchgate Street School. The almshouses are now available to single retired people in financial, housing or social need. They must have some past or present connection with Harlow. The current residents include ten women and four men. The Almshouses are managed by a board of nine Trustees drawn from the local Harlow community. The Trustees come from a wide range of backgrounds and have a variety of skills and

Our chosen charity Art Project Words by Keiren Mitchell, Housing & Welfare Project Coordinator
The Streets2Homes art project has been running since 2014 to support the confidence, wellbeing and motivation of the people with work with. This invaluable project provides our homeless centre users with a space for reflection and expression as well allowing them to enjoy the health benefits of relieving stress, increasing brain function, improving their mood and cultivating healthy social lives in a fun and safe environment. The project was first developed in conjunction with the Harlow Recreation Fund through Essex Community Foundation. In 2016, we were fortunate enough to secure funding from the Sebright Trust to run the project up to 1st November 2017. This year we were bequeathed funds from a generous supporter which will allow us to continue with this project until April 2018, when we will seek further funding to continue. Over the last year, the Streets2Homes art project has seen many service users through its doors exploring their creativity; we expected 20 clients to attend our workshops initially, but that figure has more than doubled – this is great news as we now have enough artwork to arrange an exhibition for the local community and the artists themselves to enjoy! There really is something for everybody; whether it’s painting, sketching or crafts, clay modelling or soap carving, there is an artist in all of us we just have to find it. One service user said; “It has really helped me mentally and changed my outlook on life.”

Follow the waymarks for nearly seven miles to complete the “Oak Trail” through woods, fields and villages. Look out for deer in the sanctuary and squirrels in the trees. In Theydon Bois, keep going past shops. At Bull pub, fork L on Station Approach, L again into Forest Drive and keep straight on path at end. Continue to follow the arrows and waymarks as they lead you over the M25 and back to the pub. You can download a pdf map of the route here: goo.gl/U6F9ye. Ordnance Survey Explorer map 174 will be helpful too, but don’t worry too much if you get lost – Epping Forest is a lovely place to wander and you can make up your own routes on the fern-fringed tracks through the trees. Harlow Chorus Final concerts for 2017
Words by Mick Rumens
Harlow Chorus and Saffron Walden Choral Society combined concert 11th November. Both choirs have been working extremely hard to prepare their performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in Saffron Hall. This is our Remembrance Day concert, which, this year, particularly commemorates the Battle of Passchendaele which ended 100 years ago. This collaboration with the Saffron Walden Choral Society, under their reknown musical director Janet Wheeler, who is also an accomplished composer in her own right, will be a notable event for both choirs. This memorable work by Benjamin Britten will be accompanied by the Chameleon Arts Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and will include three international soloists together with The Choristers of Jesus College.

Harlow Chorus Family Christmas Concert, Saturday 9th December, 4.00pm St John’s Church, Epping Our Christmas concert will take the format of last year being filled with traditional carols, with seasonal refreshments to enjoy during the interval. Peter Broadbent will be our Conductor, and we will be joined by the choir of Henry Moore Primary School, Harlow. We will be accompanied by Sue Graham Smith on piano and Malcolm Hicks on the Organ. Last year’s event proved very popular, with audience participation and a sparkling atmosphere to lead into the Christmas holiday season. We look forward to welcoming as many families as possible to this happy occasion.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING FRENCH OMELETTE WITH GARLIC TOMATOES 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large eggs 1tbsp milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper Large knob of butter Spinach and rocket leaves, to serve
Eggs are the perfect fridge standby for a quick and filling supper. Here’s how to make a classic creamy French omelette for one in a few simple steps – the recipe can easily be doubled to serve two people.
1. Toss the tomatoes and garlic with the olive oil. Place on a foil-lined grill pan and cook under a medium heat for 4-5 minutes until just tender. 2. Meanwhile, lightly beat the eggs and milk in a jug and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Heat the butter in a small omelette or non-stick frying pan until it is just foaming. Pour in the beaten eggs and stir gently with a fork, drawing the mixture in from the sides to the centre as it sets and letting the liquid egg run out to the sides. 4. When the omelette is just set, stop stirring and cook for a further 30 seconds to brown the underside (see tip). Place the grilled tomatoes on top of the omelette. 5. Slide the omelette onto a serving plate, tipping the pan to gently fold it over the tomatoes. Serve immediately with salad.
TIP: Take care not to overcook the omelette – keep the heat at medium and remove the pan from the heat when the top is still soft and creamy.

The Henry Moore Primary School The National Maritime Museum On Friday, 29th September Year 2 went to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. We visited the museum as part of our learning about pirates. Whilst we were there we visited a real pirate. We acted like a pirate, learned all about their rules, famous pirates and why pirates had a Jolly Roger flag. We even did a pirate cat walk! Also whilst at the museum we visited the children’s gallery. We were able to dress up in pirate clothes and act like real pirates. It was a fab day and thoroughly enjoyed by all!!
