HELLO AND WELCOME TO The December edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

I love the festive season, don’t you? There’s a sense of community and togetherness that is more apparent now than at any other time of year... Thank you to our fabulous local ministers who took time out of their busy schedules to answer our “traditional” Christmas question. This year they were asked, if you could invite 4 people to Christmas lunch who would they be and why? As always, they gave some thoughtful answers and some surprising - David Welch you will be truly missed! Turn to the centre pages to find out more. I would like to invite you to nominate your favourite local charity to become our charity of the year 2018. I’ll be drawing up a shortlist for voting during December. Whichever charity or community interest company receives the most Facebook “likes” will receive £100 in lieu of sending out business Christmas cards and of course, they will receive a years worth of promotion within the magazine and all the associated benefits that brings. Please do get in touch; I really want to support the groups that are closest to YOUR heart.

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear Residents, I recently introduced a bill to Parliament to abolish hospital car parking charges. This is something I have long campaigned for and my work in 2014 led to the Government releasing guidance on the issue. Hospital car parking affects everyone who uses the NHS. We cannot say, in good faith, that the NHS is free at the point of access if people face extortionate and unfair car parking fees to get to their hospital appointments, go to work in our vital public services or visit sick relatives. I started campaigning for this change in 2014 after finding out that hospitals in England were charging staff and visitors up to £500 a week to park. Despite the new guidance suggesting that concessions should be available for staff working unsociable shifts, blue badge holders and visitors of ill relatives, there has been little improvement. Charges have fallen overall but drivers still pay on average £1.48 for a one hour stay. No one goes to hospital by choice, no one chooses to be ill and we rely on our doctors and nurses to look after us. Being admitted to hospital or visiting a suffering family member is an already stressful situation and no one should be expected to worry about high parking charges at the same time.

Some hospitals do provide free parking and hospitals in Wales and Scotland are completely free. This proves it is possible to deliver free parking for patients, visitors and staff, discouraging abuse of the system with tokens or barriers. The Government has previously stated that providing free car parking at NHS hospitals would cost £200 million a year. I believe this money can be found. Combining better procurement with a continued emphasis on the use of generic drugs could easily raise enough money to cover hospital car parking charges. It was never envisaged that people with cars would end up paying for the NHS but drivers are still charged extortionately to park at NHS hospitals in England. I will continue to work hard to abolish hospital car parking charges to ensure the NHS really is free at the point of access for all. Very best wishes, Robert

A local community interest company (CIC): the story so far...

Back in 2016 Michelle Tohill launched ASL, a day opportunity for adults with learning difficulties (18+). Since that time the day centre has gone from strength to strength and was recently granted CIC status. Michelle, shares the story so far... I felt that young adults with additional needs, deserved more choice in Harlow with regards to supported day care and accessing work opportunities. So in 2016 I began putting my vision together, I then met Andy who had a work based training background who also just happened to have the same vision and passion for these young adults as I did and ASL was born. In May 2017 we moved premises from Old Harlow cricket club to Maddox Road, having our own space allowed us to open 5 days a week. We continued with our card making enterprise and have since added keyrings and bracelets to our collection. Everyone benefits from these enterprises; so far, with help from the proceeds, we have enjoyed days out such as Clacton, Southend, Stansted Mountfitchet Castle, Top Golf, Foot Golf, Strawberry picking, lunches and lots more. We then opened our Tea Room which was always part of my vision. It has been a huge success and has given everyone here a great

sense of purpose as well as experience of running every aspect of the Tea Room as a team. The scones, which are baked fresh every morning, are delicious. In the future we would like a full working cafe/ tea room, somewhere to sell our handmade products and also accommodate our day service clients all under one roof. As we are a not-for-profit organisation, we were recently granted CIC status – A community interest company so this means we can start fundraising and applying for grants to help support the future of ASL. We have seen significant outcomes along the way for our day clients. We have seen each one blossom and gain a sense of self worth and purpose in a community where they are valued. Our formula of just being ourselves, having fun and genuinely caring seems to be working just fine and is pivotal to all that we do. If you would like to find out more about ASL, would like to get involved or perhaps come and have an afternoon tea with us, please do get in touch.

St mary Magdalene church “the longest night” A quiet time for Christmas at St Mary Magdalene, Harlow Common Fr James writes: Christmas is great, isn’t it? Time off work, nice food and presents, chance to see the family, and the time when Christians celebrate a very special moment in history – God coming to be with us in Jesus, born in Bethlehem 2000 years ago. Yes, but….not everyone feels like celebrating at Christmas. Many of us feel under extra pressure at this time of year: stress levels are high and the rest of the world seems to expect us all to have a good time. And we may be lonely, or depressed, or recovering from the loss of a loved one. For all these reasons, the usual Christmas jollity can be very difficult. So this year at St Mary Magdalene we’re having a special event on the Wednesday before Christmas. It’s a service, but an informal one

- you can stay as long as you like between 6.30pm and 8pm. We’ll hear the Christmas story with other readings, sing some carols and hear other reflective Christmas music: we’ll light candles, say some prayers and be quiet. But above all it’s a chance for a bit of space for all of us in the run up to Christmas – and a chance perhaps for us to be reminded of God’s love for all of us. We’re calling it “The Longest Night” – because in that week, our daylight hours are at their shortest. But, if you’re in a dark place of your own this Christmas, this might be a moment when some light can shine into your life and your situation. Any queries? Please do get in touch with me.

Church Langley church

“grief is itself a medicine” - William Cowper Grief is both necessary and often difficult following the loss of a loved one. The recent Memorial Service offered by Church Langley Church was an acknowledgement of this important, but so often overlooked – or even denied – fact. Church Langley residents were invited to a reflective evening service, with the opportunity to light candles in memory of loved ones, and to hear their names read out. Around a hundred took advantage of the opportunity, and the service was very well received. Among the prayers offered and the familiar hymns, two members of the Church gave brief personal insights into grief. We were also pleased to welcome Mr Phil Clegg, Funeral Manager at Daniel Robinson and Sons (for whose generous support for the event we are grateful), who spoke on the importance of grieving and the difficulties some experience. Members of the Church Langley Voices community choir gave a heart-felt rendering of ‘The Rose’, a song of love and loss. Many stayed to the after-service refreshments, and proceeds of the retiring collection were donated to the St Clare Hospice.

A difficult choice since I would say all of our family, our children, their partners and grandchildren at Christmas lunch, a total of 12. But if I set that aside who else would I want to celebrate Christmas with? I would like to say my parents-in-law would figure highly since I learned so much from them both and they played quite a part in helping me shape my adult life into what it is, but they both died 20 years ago. Christmas for me is a special time of the year, I love the decorations, food, Carols and celebrations as we remember the greatest event in all of Human history, God’s son Jesus sent to us to restore our relationship with God. As part of that I like making people happy so it would more likely be people with no family of their own to celebrate with or whose family are too far away for them to meet. That would include those with no homes and family as well as those who are on their own. So no there are no particular people I could name, but we find that there are often folks at the table at Christmas with us who are invited at the last minute because they are on their own and so they become, at least for a day, a part of our family and celebrate with us.

24

Now this is an interesting one! Hopefully I’m allowed to invite 4 people as well as my family (7 in total) – we’ll just about get round the Vicarage dining room table though this is the coldest room in the house and we’ll need to get the fire on! Of course I’d like to invite the Holy Family – Mary, Joseph and Jesus - to come (if they’re free-they’ll probably get invited by all the other ministers!) But not the family as we see them in nativity plays and Christmas cards – with Jesus as a baby (my son doesn’t “do” babies and dinner might be a bit difficult as a result…) But what about meeting an older Mary and Joseph and, say, the teenage Jesus? (He was a teenager once, though not perhaps in the modern sense!)– to ask them what they remembered about Bethlehem and the events we still think we know so well? The Bible says hardly anything about Jesus between his birth and the age of 30 – and they were, in a very real sense, an ordinary family, like most readers of CM17.

But that leaves us one more space round the table. And I’d like to invite my grandfather, whom I never knew, but heard much about. He served in the RAF in 1917 and spent time in Palestine - he might have visited places that Jesus and his family would have known too. And I’d love to ask him if some of the stories my own father told about him were true! TO ADVERTISE CALL 01279 410345

Christmas can be a very stressful time especially for those without work or a permanent home; many people are sad as they grieve to loss of loved ones and how many of us are anxious that we have spent too much on the credit card! Certainly, the Christmas period puts great strain on relationships with many marriages breaking down.

o give some thought to w Jesus will.

It concerns me that when we celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas many experience the exact opposite of his purposes in coming. He came to bring us: unconditional love (charity), an enduring hope of a fulfilled future, faith that enables us to live and inexplicable joy in knowing his presence.

Alison Taylor Potter Street Baptist church Who would I invite to Christmas lunch? Well I’ll tell you in a minute who I will be having lunch with, but in an attempt to make the world a better place, maybe Donald Trump, President Putin and Kim Jong-un. This could be a very explosive and bad idea, but I would want them to listen to each other, hear each other and my hearts desire would be for them to realise that they are not in control of the world but at this time of year there is something very special worth celebrating that is ‘peace on the earth and good will to all on the earth’. That is all, not just the little bit of the earth they have influence on. That would be my prayer, but let’s get back to the real world and Christmas lunch, we have Christmas lunch with a few people known to us who would otherwise perhaps be on their own, because as I said it is ‘Peace on the earth and good will to all on the earth.’ Perhaps we can make a difference in our little ways rather than trying to change the world!

I do hope that whatever you do this Christmas that you will have time to reflect on the real meaning of Jesus’ birth and as you tuck in to your Christmas Day lunch that you will have Faith Hope Charity and Joy sitting down with you.

Harlow Chorus Saffron Hall Concert a sell-out success Words by Mick Rumens

The Remembrance Day concert on 11th November proved to be a great success for both Harlow Chorus and the Saffron Walden Choral Society conducted by Janet Wheeler and Sarah Tennant-Flowers. With the Choristers of Jesus College, conducted by Richard Pines, and the three brilliant soloists, Erica Elf, soprano, Robin Tritschler, tenor and Peter Harvey, Baritone all supported by the Chameleon Arts and Chamber orchestras the performances received rapturous applause from the completely sold out Saffron Hall audience. The concert programme contains a message from Gill Williamson who wrote; “This concert was conceived, inspired and supported by my late husband, Roger Williamson (1947-2015). He had loved this Requiem from the time he was a pupil in Highgate School, London, and Benjamin Britten asked the school’s choir to sing in his recording of it. Unfortunately, Roger’s voice had recently broken, so he was unable to take part. He thought it would be wonderful to unite Harlow Chorus and Saffron Walden Choral Society, (the two choirs he sang in) to sing the Requiem in this amazingly uplifting and acoustically pure venue. Roger died before this dream could be realised, but I was able to complete his request. My heartfelt thanks go to all those who have worked so hard to bring it to fruition. I am sure that singing in choirs prolonged

Roger’s life: he lived an active six and a half years after being diagnosed with terminal duodenal cancer, singing bass 2 and working part-time as a physicist.” A brave and generous gentleman with an equally brave and supportive wife. We look forward to meeting up with our supporters at our Family Christmas Concert at St John’s Epping on Saturday 9th December at 4pm, but I would also like to draw your attention to another Christmas programme at St John’s ARC in the Old Town on Friday evening 15th December at 7.30pm. Our President, Sarah Tennant-Flowers, was a great support to the Chorus at Saffron Walden and she is the founding member of a unique female a cappella group, Papagena, who will provide an evening of Medieval, Celtic & Contemporary Carols under the title of The Darkest Midnight. The singers are : Suzzie Vango, Sarah TennantFlowers, Abbi Temple, Elizabeth Drury, and Suzzie Purkis. “…the amazing variety of their repertoire and their superb vocal dexterity mark this female quintet out as la creme de la crewe in the crowded a cappella space” (Edinburgh Festival 2016). On behalf of Harlow Chorus I wish CM17 Connection staff and all its readers a very happy, healthy and enjoyable Christmas season and a successful New Year 2018.

On your marks

get set, DON’T go!

Where did your tiny baby go? Through the love and care you give him, day by day, he’s now sitting up all by himself, strong and smiley. This is the perfect time to capture this cute 6-8month stage of life, before he’s really on the move. Milestones in months - From very first the day your baby arrived, he’s changed so much already. Together we can capture the character of your baby; the ear-to-ear smiles, the dimples and the chubby cheeks, so you always have a way to look back and celebrate those pre-mobile days. And they’re off! Almost - This is a crucial time in baby photography. In no time at all your baby will be crawling, cruising, walking and running everywhere and you will be right behind him every tiny step of the way. Grab this window of opportunity with both hands and photograph him before he becomes a speedy blur! It’s the next best thing - After newborn photography, creating characterful and timeless photographic memories of your baby at 6-8-months is the next natural milestone. This is where he’ll be engaged, happy to pose, smile, giggle and wiggle rather than run away from the camera. Capture every precious moment - Photographing a sitting baby is a very precious moment indeed - for in a matter of weeks, he will be independently mobile for many years to come. There is a last day for everything, even in a child so young and that last day of ‘just sitting’ will soon arrive. Capture the magic, create the memory and admire the artistic result forever.

Our chosen charity Awards for achievement Words by Kerrie Eastman, Chief Operations Officer S2H

In October, Streets2Homes held our annual evening of celebration, Awards for Achievement, where we acknowledged the successes of our clients, volunteers and significant others who help us as an organisation to achieve our aims. We had the wonderful Vice Chair of Harlow Council, Maggie Hulcoop, in attendance at the centre to present the awards; unfortunately, her stunning chain of office had been sent off for repair, so our quick-thinking, solution-focused project worker, Wayne, designed and crafted a makeshift one which Maggie accepted with good humour, grace and wore all evening (Maggie actually stated she preferred Wayne’s design as it wasn’t so heavy!). Certificates were presented to our clients who had successfully completed accredited courses such as Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, IOSHH, Food Allergy Awareness and many more; our volunteers who had successfully completed courses were also presented with their certificates. It is wonderful to see our clients grow in confidence, self-esteem and improve their employment opportunities and we are immensely proud of our clients who have successfully completed these courses.

our Welfare and Support Worker, is passionate about encouraging our clients to develop their confidence, well-being and reach their full potential. We are currently seeking further funding through the Aviva Community Fund to continue and further develop our Achieve2Believe project and YOU CAN HELP US by voting. Quite simply, if we receive the most votes, Aviva will award us vital funding. To vote you can go to https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/ view/17-6250 During our awards ceremony, we also recognised Rachel Bartlett of Astro Lighting as our Champion of the Year; the Astro Lighting Company support us in so many ways throughout the year with funding, events, specialist support and delicious pizza lunches to name a few! But Rachel goes above and beyond this and has become a face that everyone at the centre recognises and welcomes as she takes part in all the events that Astro arrange and is a frequent visitor to the centre. We are truly grateful for all her enthusiasm and the support we receive from Astro Lighting.

As always, we are extremely grateful to our funders who enable us to provide these opportunities to our clients in an environment that they feel safe and supported in. Helen,

There will be light refreshments, great art and superb company at the Gibberd Gallery from 6.30pm-8pm you are most welcome to come along! Keeley Nickolds, a local letting agent, received an award for her outstanding support to Streets2Homes in helping us to house our clients without homes. The Rent Guarantee Company who are one of our corporate supporters very kindly sponsored the event and we had a wonderful buffet to celebrate all the achievements of our clients and supporters.
