HELLO AND WELCOME TO The February edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

Did you set yourself a monthly challenge or two? I have restarted yoga, started Wing Chun AND thought I’d give Nordic walking a try! So far so good 2018! You may recall that last year we invited nominations for your favourite local charity to become our charity of the year 2018. We received lots and the top 6 charities shortlisted were: • CanalAbility • Herts & Essex Community Farm • PACT for Autism • St Clare Hospice • St Elizabeth’s Centre • The Hailey Centre The voting window was just 4 days on social media and for the rst 2 it was very close but after day 3 it became apparent that one nominee touched the hearts of more voters. I am delighted to announce that St Clare Hospice is the CM Connection Charity of the Year 2018! Thank you for your nominations, for voting and to the charities that were shortlisted - you are ALL amazing! If resources allowed, we would support you all every month. Instead know that we will continue to do all that we can by sharing your events in all 3 of our magazines, on social media or both! Until next month, Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear Readers, It’s been a busy couple of weeks in Parliament since the House returned from Christmas recess. Since then, I have been working particularly hard on one of my five priorities; Protecting Our NHS. NHS doctors, nurses and staff work so hard every single day, in Harlow and across the country. They provide the care we all need and it is only right that they have access to the very best facilities to make their working days easier. I have also seen how deteriorating facilities and extortionate car parking charges at hospitals have made the lives of patients and visitors so much harder at an already difficult time. For those reasons, it is vital that we continue to protect our NHS and abolish hospital car parking charges. As I promised during the General Election, I have been working hard to secure capital funding for a new hospital in Harlow and protect our NHS for another 50 years. I’m very pleased that the Government gave Princess Alexandra Hospital an additional £2.7 million from the Winter Funding Boost to help nurses, doctors and staff cope with winter pressures over Christmas. However, capital funding for a new hospital is vital. I have continued to push Department of Health Ministers for extra funding. The Hospitals Minister has visited Harlow a number of times and is aware of the issues faced by the hospital. He acknowledged the application for capital funding for a new hospital and promised it would

be considered in the Health Department’s next round of funding. I look forward to hearing more about the timing of this and will keep Harlow residents up to date with any progress. I have also raised the issue of hospital car parking charges in the House of Commons. I have been campaigning to scrap hospital car parking charges for several years and, despite Government guidelines, 47 per cent of hospitals have raised their car parking charges since 2014 and almost half still charge blue badge holders to park – some are charged £4 for an hour of parking. No one chooses to go to hospital and it is a difficult time for all involved. Car parking charges at NHS hospitals in England mean that patients, visitors and staff are charged to receive treatment or go to work in our vital public services. I introduced a Bill to Parliament on the issue, which will see its Second Reading in March, to put an end to this stealth tax on drivers using the NHS and will continue to campaign on this issue to end hospital car parking charges. I will write again soon – if there is ever anything I can do to help, you can contact me via halfon4harlowMP@roberthalfon.com. Robert Robert Halfon MP – Working Hard for Harlow

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Snowdrops in Enfield This springtime walk discovers flowers and farmland in London’s northernmost borough. Just half an hour away by train (change at Cheshunt) or car, Enfield is full of hidden treasures. From Turkey Street Station, turn right under railway and continue along Turkey Street, under main road, and keep straight. Cross the New River and a road to enter Myddelton House, with a rockery garden at the far end full February snowdrops, or carpets of March daffs in the Alpine meadow. Go back to entrance of Myddelton House and turn right along road. Just before brick bridge, turn right through gate, left over footbridge, right and right again. Follow Forty Hall Loop (purple waymarks) for two miles, past wooded lakes farmland with sheep and pigs, and a vineyard. Look out carefully for the purple arrows, eventually turning left at a junction of paths. Through door in corner of walled garden, you reach Forty Hall. This Jacobean mansion, in a huge landscaped park, has a great café, serving farm veg soup and interesting cakes, like spinach and lime. Leaving Forty Hall, turn left onto road past church. Just after school, turn right on tarmac path; keep straight over main road and past cemetery. Finally, turn left at London Loop sign back to Turkey Street.

Where quality comes as standard

Snowdrops Snowy white droplets with spots of green, Snowdrops, held in high esteem, For their gentle scent so fresh and pure, A major part of their allure, As they paint the earth beneath the trees, Pushing sturdy stems through fallen leaves, Clothing banks and ditches, borders, beds, In clumps of white with nodding heads. Snowdrops. Together with butter faced aconites, First to brave winter, while frost still bites, Boosting our spirits, soothing our ills, Paving the way for daffodils, While they bow their heads as if in shame, Waiting for spring to come again, Snowdrops. Every one is special, Varieties, each with a special name, Distinctive features, unique markings They don’t all look the same. And then – Once spring is here to stay, They disappear and fade away; Safe beneath trees, in loamy soil, Away from prying eyes, and earth’s turmoil; You’d hardly know they’d been there at all, Until snowy white droplets with spots of green, On sturdy stems, pure, serene, Grow beneath trees and on banks appear, First flower to brave winter another year. Charity of the year

Seeking volunteers to lend a hand at the harlow charity shop St Clare Hospice, is encouraging local people to join the team and get involved with volunteering in their flagship store located at the St James Centre, Harlow.

More than 230 local people, aged from 16 to 92 years, give their time to help out in St Clare’s eight charity shops, located across West Essex and East Herts, offering their invaluable help in sorting donations, providing excellent customer service and maintaining the shop floor. Shop volunteer, Danielle Spicer, has been helping in the Debden St Clare shop for over two years. Danielle said: “Volunteering in a St Clare charity shop is an easy way to help people, and a nice little job to have. I’ve made so many good friends just from working here – both colleagues and customers. There’s such a happy atmosphere here because we are all close, and we get on all the time. It’s hard to put into words; it’s like one big family here.” “It’s easy to think that these kinds of places are just charity shops, and to forget where the money is going. Yet, because the Hospice is local, the people around here usually have some association to St Clare, and do know exactly where their money is going and who it is helping. I love volunteering here because

Danielle Spicer, a St Clare shop volunteer

you can see that what you’re doing is helping, and making a difference in your local community – you can see it happening. “I love it here – I really do. At first, I was very nervous to meet so many people, yet, everyone made me feel so welcome, and at home. It was like I had always been here. Volunteering for St Clare has given back to me, and helped me with building confidence. Now, I feel like I can do things that I wouldn’t have been able to do before.” St Clare Hospice’s Harlow shop is currently recruiting for more volunteers to help in the store located at Unit2A, St James Centre, East road, Harlow, CM20 2BJ. St Clare Hospice Hospice launches workshop for young people to remember lost loved ones St Clare Hospice, has launched a new group therapy workshop for children, young people and their families entitled ‘Sharing Stories’. The new group is being offered as part of their Children and Young People’s Support Service, which launched in May 2017 after a major grant was received from BBC Children in Need. The ‘Sharing Stories’ workshop offers a safe place for children, young people and their family members, to come together with other local families to share favourite moments and memories of their loved ones who have been cared for by St Clare. St Clare Children, Young People and Family Therapist, Catherine Kiff, outlined the Sharing Stories group: “When someone close to us dies, there can be a worry that special memories may be forgotten – those happy, funny and unique stories may never be shared between members of a family. Sharing Stories offers a safe place to be able to talk about those hidden and precious memories of a loved one, which are a part of a family’s history. Our workshops aim to be positive and uplifting for participants, supporting children and young people to come to terms with what has happened within the grieving process. Part of the workshop also includes a group facilitator writing up shared stories, for participants to take home their own stories as a keepsake after the course concludes. ”Commenting on the launch of the new group therapy workshop, Catherine said: “It is fantastic for us to be able to launch this group for children and young people who have lost someone close to them at St Clare. Remembering a loved one, and learning more about that special person,

Catherine Kiff, St Clare Hospice Child, Young Person and Family Therapist

can provide such a comfort to those who are experiencing bereavement, which is exactly what Sharing Stories aims to offer. We’re really looking forward to our first few sessions which we hope will be hugely beneficial to those who attend.” Sharing Stories will be led by Child, Young Person and Family Therapist, Catherine Kiff, at the Hospice Centre in Hastingwood. The service is open to any child or young person who has experienced bereavement at St Clare Hospice. Sessions will occur on a weekly basis with attendees encouraged to participate in the full programme lasting a total of four weeks. The first Sharing Stories sessions will begin in February 2018, and is open to children and young people aged 8+ years who have had a loved one cared for by St Clare Hospice in the last 3 years. The Hospice is encouraging people to get in touch with their team if they would like to attend with their children. The dates of the first Sharing Stories group are as follows: 10am – 12pm, Saturday 3 February 2018 10am – 12pm, Saturday 10 February 2018 10am – 12pm, Saturday 17 February 2018 10am – 12pm, Saturday 24 February 2018 Places are limited and participants will be selected on a first-come-first-served basis. harlow tye rotary club Charity Abseil 2018 - keep the challenge alive Would you like to raise money for a charity or voluntary organisation that is dear to your heart, or are you involved in such an organisation that needs to raise money for a particular project? It can be local, national or international and it might be, for instance, a School, a Club, a Hospice or a national charity such as Cancer Research UK. Are you game for a challenge or do you know someone who is? Then read on: Yes, it is nearly time for Harlow Tye Rotary Club’s Annual Charity Abseil event. In the 20 years so far an extraordinary £910,000 has been raised for hundreds of worthy causes. We see no reason to stop whilst there are charities and voluntary organisations needing help to raise funds. When and where is it? It will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 5th and 6th May 2018 (the May bank holiday weekend) at the Church Langley Water Tower in Harlow. How does it work? Our Club employs fully qualified experts to train and supervise you throughout the abseil procedure. You have to pay an entry fee of £35 to take part but 100%

of the sponsorship that you raise from family, friends and colleagues goes to the beneficiary of your choice. By the way, you have to be 16 or over to enter. How do I (or they) get involved? Go to our Club website www. harlowtyerotary.org.uk and follow the instructions there to download a registration form and conditions of entry. Failing that, you can e-mail us on abseil@ harlowtyerotary.org.uk or telephone/text Bill on 07711982671 to have them sent or delivered to you. Charities or voluntary organisations can enter teams but please contact us for details. Entries are now being accepted. Why should I? Every year, a good number of people who admit to being scared of heights have a go and the sense of achievement that they experience is there for all to see – not only for doing it but also for the money that they raise for their chosen cause. If you have any questions, do please give me a call, Bill Colton - Harlow Tye Rotary Club Abseil Co-ordinator. My contact details are below.

Harlow Chorus New beginnings for Harlow Chorus Words by Mick Rumens

Monday 8th January was our first rehearsal of the new year, and the first to be conducted by our new, permanent, musical director, Edward-Rhys Harry. He has many years of experience working in the UK and internationally as a voice coach, adjudicator, composer, arranger and choral director. With a near maximum vote of the chorus, he was our unanimous choice for the position, and made an extremely favourable impression on his debut ‘appearance’. His skills, good humour and clear direction shone through in what seemed, to your correspondent, an all too short evening. Hopefully, we will not disappoint him in his proposed intentions to help us increase our skills to be amongst the top choirs in the country. If there are any choral singers who would like to join us on this exciting journey, you will be made most welcome (especially any tenors). We meet on Monday evenings at St John’s Arts and Community Centre in Harlow Old Town from 7.30pm. We are now preparing for our first concert of the year at St Johns Church, Epping on Saturday 24th March at 7.30pm. The programme will be Haydn’s ‘Paukenmasse’, a ‘Mass in Time of War’, and Mozart’s ‘Solemn Vespers’.

Haydn had just returned to Vienna in the autumn of 1795, from a successful second visit to London, at a time when the AustroHungarian empire was at war with France and had been suffering heavy defeats from the advanced troops under the leadership of he brilliant young General Bonaparte. It was during these dark days that the composer began work on a new mass. It is believed to have been first performed in Vienna on St Stephen’s Day (26 December) 1796. Mozart’s work was composed pre 1783 since he wrote to his father, in a letter dated 12 March 1783 to send this, and another of his works, to him in Vienna so that he could show them to Baron Gottfried van Swieten. This work contains settings of Psalms 109 (Dixit), 110 (Confiebor), 111 (Bieatus air) 112 (Laudate pueri), 116 (Laudate Dominum) and of the Magnificat canticle. I look forward to seeing many of our regular supporters and, perhaps, some new ones, at this inaugural concert under Edward’s baton.

and another Tom Receives a proposal ii By Tom Hughes @groomsdaybook

If you recall, Dear Reader, previously on And Another Thing, my old chum and workmate Nigel had been fatally struck by Cupid’s bow and had resolved, for reasons best known only to himself, to make an honest woman of Val, his long term squeeze. Yours truly was appointed best man and was duly tasked with organising the stag do. So, after rejecting Newcastle (too chilly), Amsterdam (too hazy) and New York (too far), Nigel, being a big fan of the Beatles, plumped for Liverpool. And so it came to pass that twelve middle-aged workmates alighted the train at Lime Street and, rucksacks in hand, trudged towards the Adelphi. We were standing in the lobby when Terry (marketing) unzipped his suitcase, pulled out an enormous flesh-coloured rubber suit and presented it to the groom. “Here Nige, the lads want you to wear this.”

I have to wear one? What if I get chatted up? I won’t be able to look Margaret in the eye.” Brian blinked as he pushed his mist-covered glasses back up his little nose. “Don’t worry Bri, if I see any strange women approaching you, I’ll be sure to let them know you’re completely off limits. Right, everyone follow me - Liverpool here we come!” And so The Dirty Dozen hit Liverpool’s bars. As I was best man, it was only reasonable that I was in the chair for the first round. “OK, what are we having?”

Nigel stared at the object for less than a second. “Terry, put that away and don’t be silly.”

Colin was the first to pipe up. “Err, Tom, can I have a lime and soda?”

Now it was my turn. “Here everyone, put these on.” Twelve black t-shirts appeared - “WATCH OUT LADIES - IT’S NIGEL’S STAG!”

“No. You can have a Guinness. Ken?”

A few of the guys pulled them on over their shirts, the material straining to cover their considerable girths. Colin, Nigel’s brother (clearly miffed because he wasn’t the best man), objected. “I can’t wear that - it won’t go with these chinos.” “Listen Colin, if you prefer, I can ring Val and see if you can go on the hen do?” Then it was Brian’s (finance) turn to pipe up. Brian was bald, 5’ 3” and wider than he was tall. He squinted through round spectacles. “Tom, do

“I’ll have Guinness. And I’ll have Colin’s too if he doesn’t want it.” After a few ales, in order to line the stomach, we repaired to a pre-booked Chinese restaurant. After a gut-busting banquet, it was time to settle up. On the back of a napkin, Brian totted up one twelfth of the bill. “Right, that’s £31.50 each please.” Colin cleared his throat. “I don’t want to be picky, but I never had the soup, so technically…” Colin’s protestations came to an abrupt end when Big Larry (transport) shoved a banana fritter down the back of Colin’s shirt.

thing... As old friends were reacquainted and new friendships made, the laughter grew louder and the hugs became more frequent. By six o’clock, spirits were high. By eight, the atmosphere was convivial. By ten, the conversations were distinctly lachrymose. Colin, a confirmed teetotaller, was crying into his umpteenth Guinness as he put his arm around my neck. ‘Yer know summat, Tim?” “Tom.” “You know summat Tom? Our Nige, well he, he, loves the very, the very, the very…”

Colin fell backwards into a potted plant and collapsed into a drunken stupor. Then it hit us - no one had seen the groom. After a frantic search Nigel was located sitting under a street lamp, toying forlornly with the hem of his t-shirt. Slowly, I eased myself down next to him. “What’s up, old chum?” “Tom, am I doing the right thing?” “Well, I don’t think this pavement is doing much for your piles.”

“Bones?”

“No, marrying Val. I mean, you love your Sarah, don’t you?”

Colin stopped mid-stutter and shook his head. Unfortunately, whether it was my skeleton or something else that Nigel adored would forever be unknown, because it was at this point that

Oh goodness, now it was my turn to start the waterworks. But as for Nigel, well I began to wonder if his toes hadn’t begun to turn ever so slightly chilly...

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING SPICED BEAN & CARROT PATTIES

1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped 2 carrots, peeled and grated 1 tsp harissa paste 400g can cannellini beans, drained 400g can red kidney beans, drained 3 tbsp freshly chopped mint 100g fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs Vegetable oil for shallow frying Salad and herb yoghurt dressing, to serve (see TIP)

This is a great recipe for meat-free Monday - or any other day of the week! Harissa paste is a fiery hot blend of spices from North Africa sold near the dried herbs in most large supermarkets. If unavailable, replace with 2 tsp curry paste or sun-dried tomato puree.

1. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan, add the onion and fry for 5 minutes until softened. Cool for 5 minutes then place in a food processor with the carrots, harissa paste, beans, mint and breadcrumbs. 2. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for about 30 seconds until well blended. Shape the mixture into 15 small round patties. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. 3. Shallow fry the patties in hot vegetable oil for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper then serve with salad and dressing.

TIP: Serve these patties with dark green salad leaves such as baby spinach and watercress with chunks of cooked beetroot. For a quick herb dressing, stir lemon juice and freshly chopped mint into natural yogurt and season to taste.

The Henry Moore Primary School A Day at Science Alive On Tuesday 28th November 2017, children from The Henry Moore Primary School took part in an exciting day out at Science Alive, Harlow Leisurezone. The day aimed to develop children’s scientific skills through a range of fun and engaging activities such as building bridges from sheets of paper to hold a kilogram weight. Later on during the day, the children had the opportunity to research a topic of scientific interest and then report back their findings to a group of adults. The children even had the chance to listen to real life scientists who discussed how they use scientific skills in their jobs. The day was extremely useful for the children and helped to promote pupil autonomy. Many children expressed an interest in fulfilling careers in science as an outcome of the day. The Science Alive centre is a fantastic resource for all schools to use and is open during school holidays as well as weekends. Well done to all of the children who took part during this day.

EVERY CHILD DESERVES THE OPPORTUNITIES AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO DEVELOP INTO RESPONSIBLE, SELF-SUFFICIENT ADULTS WHO ARE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE POSITIVELY TO SOCIETY AND BREAK THE CYCLE OF POVERTY So what can be done? It became a Cathedral in 1914. Much of the building dates back to the early fifteenth century and its Gothic perpendicular architecture replaced an earlier church built in the eleventh century. The two-storied South Porch is faced with traditional stone and flint inlay known as “Flushwork”. This was greatly enriched in 1953 as a memorial to “tasks and friendships shared” when, during the Second World War, U.S. forces were stationed in the county of Essex. The American window illustrated depicts the Stars and Stripes, the arms of the U.S. Airforce and those of George Washington.
