A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear CM17 Readers, Since I became your MP, I have been passionate about education and apprenticeships in Harlow. That is why I was the first MP to ever employ a parliamentary apprentice and I have had five young people from Harlow doing apprenticeships in my office over the years. I am passionate about Harlow College and our University Technical College too, as they are so important for skills and jobs in Harlow. That is why, in my role as Chair of the Commons Education Committee, I’m championing apprenticeships and education for Harlow residents. I believe in an educational ladder of opportunity to give everyone the opportunity to access the education and training they need to get jobs, prosperity and security for their future. A massive part of this is degree apprenticeships, which I’m very glad that Anglia Ruskin in Harlow now offer. Students earn while they learn, they do not take out any student loans, and they get good quality jobs at the end. They also help us meet our skills deficit, so they benefit society at the same time. We face a rise of the robots. Five Guys in America now use artificial intelligence and robots to serve their burgers. We need to

make sure that everyone gets the education and skills they need to get the high skilled jobs of the future. I worked very hard to get the Government to invest almost half a billion pounds in to Harlow with the move of Public Health England. I was delighted that this happened, but the next step is making sure that Harlow and village residents get the right training to get the thousands of jobs that Public Health England will create, particularly in science and technology subjects. Harlow College have made a very good start on this with their new, state-of-the-art Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Centre and I’m pleased that the Government supported this too with an additional £2.8million investment in our town. What’s your favourite shop? As I live outside the area I don’t have a favourite shop but my favourite place to visit is the Gibberd Garden. It’s always such fun to search for the sculptures and pots scattered across the garden. What’s your favourite Venue? It would have to be the Miller & Carter where we hold our WIBN meetings. The staff are always so friendly and very helpful with the members who have dietary requirements. The food is always delicious and we have a lovely private room. Charity of the year St Clare launches new project to tackle loneliness St Clare Hospice has announced the launch of a new community-led project aimed at tackling loneliness and isolation across West Essex and East Herts. The volunteer community project is called Compassionate Neighbours. Compassionate Neighbours is an award winning, community-led project for people living with a life-limiting illness, or who are experiencing loneliness or social isolation. The project was founded by St Joseph’s Hospice in East London in 2011 and received national recognition when it won the Charity Times Community Award in 2017. Compassionate Neighbours projects have now been established in a total of seven hospices. Outlining the Compassionate Neighbours Project, St Clare Hospice Chief Executive, Sarah Thompson, said: “At St Clare we know that a lot of people living with a life-limiting illness become socially isolated, and that there are people facing death and dying on their own in our communities. We also know that there is a desire in our communities to be there for one another, and Compassionate Neighbours is about unlocking and enabling this to happen. Compassionate Neighbours is a network of trained volunteers who offer their time and support to people living in their local area. They offer friendship and a listening ear, and help them to continue to do the things they enjoy. We carefully match the Compassionate Neighbours with members of the community, so that they are suited to each other based on their interests and hobbies.”

St Clare Hospice is launching the project alongside fellow local hospice charities, Isabel Hospice and Garden House Hospice Care. The three hospices serve a population of over 800,000 people across West Essex and East and North Herts. community funding project Harlow soup hits Crowdfunder target and more for first event

Harlow SOUP, a micro-granting community event, successfully went above and beyond its Crowdfunder target of £500 to fund its first event held on 22nd February at Phoenix Live in Harlow town centre. The brand-new community event finished its Crowdfunder with an impressive £610, over £100 over the target, to kick-start the very first Harlow SOUP. The event was open to attendees on a “pay what you like” basis and entrance included a selection of homemade soups and breads, cakes and live music from local musicians. Attendees heard four candidates each pitch a community project idea for Harlow and were able to vote for their favourite project. Pitches were made for a Public Piano, a toilet refurbishment for Streets2Homes, mindfulness sessions at Livewire and wildlife habitats at Parndon Wood. The votes were counted and the winning project was the toilet refurbishment at Streets2Homes. CEO Kerrie Eastman was delighted to receive the £327.21 made on the door that night.

The debut Harlow SOUP evening was the first in a series of Harlow SOUP events – and submissions for community projects will remain open on the group’s website to be considered for the next SOUP event on Thursday 24th May. Winning projects will also be invited to attend the next event to speak about the success of their project and the benefits for Harlow. About Harlow SOUP Harlow SOUP aims to promote communitybased development through crowdfunding, creativity, collaboration, democracy, trust and fun. The purpose of Harlow SOUP is to help make community projects happen, share a meal and have a conversation. Harlow SOUP is made up of a group of volunteers who have a desire to make positive change for their local community. When did you first set up your business? I first started Dog Grooming over 12 years ago although I had been in full time training at Writtle College for three years before that in order to achieve my City & Guilds qualifications.

The initial funding for my business came from working part time doing a wide variety of jobs. I saved every penny towards my dream of opening my own Grooming Parlour. Looking back, all of these jobs were linked in some way with the animal world. I worked at a Stables in Epping Forest as a Stable Girl for several years and at a Boarding Kennels as a Kennel Maid, I also helped out at the grooming parlour there, which whetted my appetite to succeed even more. I worked as a veterinary nurse for several years before finally

What has been the most valuable? As a business owner I have learnt that I need to know exactly what it is that I don’t actually know... and then be prepared to go and find the answers.

What hurdles have you faced? In the early days just to simply survive was a massive hurdle. The failure rate in this trade is rather daunting and we have seen many similar businesses come and go.

For us professionalism, full insurances and training are the way forward. The costs of these can of course be very unnerving but this investment is very important to us. We want our customers to have complete confidence in the service that we provide and our being fully trained, insured and accredited is one way of achieving that. Our rehearsals, with our new Musical Director, Edward-Rhys Harry, have been going extremely well and he has us very well primed to give a top class performance of the Haydn Mass in Time of War, and Mozart’s Solemn Vespers. Whilst these both sound like they will be very doleful pieces, in fact they are both as exciting, lyrical, and entertaining that you are likely to hear. We shall be joined by four soloists, Jessica Robinson (soprano), Juliet Schiemann (Alto), Aaron Meters (Tenor), and Nicholas Morton (Bass). We will also have the great pleasure of being accompanied by the British Sinfonietta orchestra. The British Sinfonietta is a top class professional orchestra involved in a variety of engagements including classical concerts, choral concerts, televised events, studio recording sessions and film screening with live soundtracks. One of our Musical Director’s roles is as their Resident Conductor and, while they

have extensively performed in the UK, they have enjoyed many visits to Western Europe. I’m very pleased to advise that we have had some new members join us this year, but we have plenty of room for more so, if any CM17 readers are interested then come and hear us in this at St John’s Church, Epping. This will be well worth your visit and you will appreciate the opportunities that membership of Harlow Chorus will provide. Interesting the history of alice By Catherine Rose

The Mad March Hare is a character from folklore that was forever immortalised by the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, also known as author Lewis Carroll, in his classic children’s novel Alice in Wonderland. It was written for Alice Liddell, a friend’s daughter who looked nothing like Sir John Tenniel’s famous illustrations. So, who was the real Alice? Alice Pleasance Liddell, who later became Hargreaves when she married the Hampshire cricketer Reginald Hargreaves, was born on 4th May 1852 in Westminster, London. She was the fourth child of ten (two died in infancy) and close to her older and younger sisters Lorina (known as Ina) and Edith, who both went on to feature in Dodgson’s photographs and writing. Soon after she was born, Alice’s father Henry Liddell became Dean of Christ Church College and the family moved to Oxford in 1856 - the same year that Alice met Dodgson, a keen photographer and college librarian. Dodgson took many photos of Alice during their acquaintance, some of them hauntingly beautiful. They show a pretty elfin girl with a dark bob and soulful eyes pictured in various poses, costumes and guises from Oriental girl to beggar maid. By the time she was 20, Alice had become so well-known that the famous Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron also took her portrait. Remarkable for capturing the personality of her subjects, Cameron’s photograph shows Alice, by then an attractive young woman, staring defiantly into the lens. The original Alice’s Adventures Underground was conceived on a boat trip that the ten-yearold Alice and her sisters made with Dodgson and his friend Canon Duckworth. Entertaining them with one of his imaginative stories, the author invented a fabulous tale about Alice falling down a rabbit hole and meeting all sorts of curious characters on the way. After being

begged by Alice to write it down, he presented it to her as a bound handwritten manuscript in November 1864. Encouraged by his friends Henry Kingsley and author George MacDonald, Dodgson decided to commercially publish the story a year later. It was illustrated by the artist Sir John Tenniel and proved so popular that it was followed up in 1872 by Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, later to become simply Alice Through the Looking Glass. However, around the same time that Lewis Carroll’s famous novel was being born, there was a huge falling out between Dodgson and the Liddells. It is still not known what caused the rift as Dodgson’s diary entries for this time were removed. As a result, there has been much speculation over the years as to what happened. One theory is that Dodgson (aged 31) wanted to marry Alice (then 11) but the family were against it. Although times have changed and we would find this both shocking and unacceptable today, Victorian morality was very different and it wasn’t uncommon for an older man to choose a child bride. Up until 1885, when it was raised to 16, the age of consent for a girl was 12. Other theories have suggested Henry Liddell was put out by Charles Dodgson’s criticisms of his deanery or that there was a scandal when, following visits to see the children while their parents were away, Dodgson was accused of having an affair with their governess. It has also been suggested that Alice’s mother believed Dodgson’s visits and photo sessions had become too intrusive. Whatever the reason, it was clearly a bad enough rift for her to take the step of burning all his previous letters to Alice.

history Imaginative and creative, Dodgson loved the company of children and as a result, his sexuality has later been scrutinised. Alice herself never accused him of any wrongdoing and it was even suggested that her only surviving son Caryl (her other two sons died in the First World War) was named in honour of the author.

Because the illustrated Alice bears no resemblance to Alice Liddell and the original story was markedly changed for publication, some critics believe the fictional Alice isn’t based on the real Alice at all. However, it can’t be denied that Dodgson made strong references to her throughout the text.

Following the fall out with Dodgson, as a young woman it is said that Alice had an affair with Queen Victoria’s youngest son Prince Leopold after he came to study at Christ Church, but that the pair were forbidden to marry by the queen because Alice was a commoner.

Perhaps the strongest is an acrostic poem epilogue to Alice Through the Looking Glass. A poignant and nostalgic verse about that original boat trip, it spells out her name and begins: A boat beneath a sunny sky, Lingering onward dreamily, In an evening of July….

Fast forward just over a century and the same scenario between a Prince and another ‘commoner’ who also met at university had a very different outcome!

There is a perhaps even sadder ending to this story as after Alice’s husband died, she sold her original manuscript of Alice’s Adventures Underground in 1928. It fetched the considerable sum of £15,400 at Sotheby’s and today is kept in the British Museum. Alice died in 1934 and her ashes are interred at Lyndhurst.

Perhaps a clue to their feelings is that Prince Leopold named his daughter Alice, and in turn, Alice named one of her sons Leopold.

The thought of leaving friends and going to a new school, coupled with the anxiety of the unknown, can make moving house very unsettling for children. Kate Duggan recently moved house with ten days’ notice. (She wouldn’t recommend it.) Here are some of her top tips for helping children to cope with a big move. INVOLVING YOUR CHILD If possible, take your child to see the new house before the move, and explore the area together. Involve them in small decisions: “Where do you think this should go?” “What colour shall we paint your room?” You could also let your child choose some wall decals for their bedroom and a new duvet cover or rug. That being said, they will want familiar items around them. The day before you move, help them to pack a suitcase with everything they’ll need for the next couple of days, including a favourite teddy, a book, a game and so on. DON’T STRESS ABOUT DECLUTTERING While you may be desperate to declutter ahead of the move, your child may not cope with the extra pressure of giving up toys and clothes, even those that have been languishing in a cupboard for months. Don’t force them into getting rid of things if they don’t want to. You could suggest packing items that they’re not sure about into a box for the loft, with the agreement that you’ll both open it and sort through everything a few months after the move.

MAKING FAMILY TIME When your to-do list is three feet long, it’s really difficult to carve out any quality time to spend with your family, but do try. Leaving the boxes for 20 minutes so you can play a board game can help to avoid a potential meltdown later on. All of you will benefit from getting away from the house for a couple of hours now and then, ideally for some fresh air and time to focus on each other. TALK TO YOUR CHILD Explain why you’re moving house, whether it’s due to needing to pay less rent or because you’ve found a better area to live in. Talk about how your child is feeling about the move. What are they worried about, and what can you do to alleviate those worries? So, for example, if they’re worried about a new school, could you ask their teacher to help you arrange a playdate before your child starts at the school? If they’re upset about leaving friends, can you arrange meet-ups or Skype calls? MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF Moving is stressful. And when you’re stressed, it’s very easy to lose your temper with the kids when they’re being particularly whingy or difficult. So try to take some time out to recharge your own batteries. You might find relaxation techniques useful, or just kicking back with a glass of wine and a film now and then may help.

1. To make the meatballs, place the pork, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, Cajun seasoning and coriander in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for a few seconds until thoroughly mixed. Alternatively, mix well with clean hands. 2. Shape the mixture into 24 meatballs. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs for 10-15 minutes until browned and cooked through. Shake the pan frequently to turn the meatballs. 3. Meanwhile, place the couscous in a large bowl and pour over enough boiling water to just cover the grains. Leave to soak for about 10 minutes until all the liquid has been absorbed. Separate the grains by stirring with a fork. Add the onion, tomatoes, coriander and olive oil and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Divide the hot couscous between four serving bowls. Thread the cooked meatballs onto metal skewers and serve on top of the couscous.

TIP: Cajun seasoning is a spicy blend of spices, chilli powder and herbs such as thyme and oregano. You’ll find it on the spice racks in the supermarket.

Special the great british spring clean The Great British Spring Clean campaign, which is taking place on 2 - 4th March, has a simple aim: to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches. Tidy, an independent charity working towards eliminating litter, ending waste by creating sustainable practices, and improving our beaches, parks and streets. PLACES TO BE PROUD OF The goal of the Great British Spring Clean is to inspire 500,000 people to get outdoors, get active and help clear up the rubbish around them, so that they can ‘live and work in places that they can be proud of and prosper in.’ The campaign works with individuals, businesses, organisations and public bodies, and has some big-name supporters including Coca-Cola Great Britain, Lidl, McDonalds, Wrigley, Costa, Iceland, KFC, Greggs, Stagecoach, the RSPCA, the RSPB and the Marine Conservation Society. GET INVOLVED ‘Join our growing army of #LitterHeroes who have had enough of other people’s litter and are willing to do something about it,’ urges the campaign’s statement. ‘Together we can make a difference and clean up the environment on our doorstep.’ You can do some litter-picking by yourself or with friends and family, although make sure you stay safe, particularly if you’re litter-picking near roads. If you prefer to join an organised event or group, the campaign page has a handy map of what’s on – and you can also enter your postcode to discover events taking place near you. You may not have a few years to spare to follow in Wayne’s footsteps, but a shorter coastal excursion could be fun. At the end of a very busy half-term learning all about life under the sea, Year 4 went on an exciting school trip to the Sea Life Adventure Centre in Southend. We knew a lot about sea life already, but came away from the trip feeling like underwater experts. We could not believe our eyes when we encountered some of the more peculiar creatures! We were able to identify many of the species and learnt lots of new information about them. Before arriving, we came up with some questions for the experts at the centre and we were grateful to have them answered during a handling session, where we got to touch a real starfish and crab! We felt as though we were swimming with the sharks when we entered the underwater tunnel and thoroughly enjoyed watching the penguins have their lunch. What a fin-tastic day.
