HELLO AND WELCOME TO The April edition of the cm17 connection
CONNECTION
Hoorah! The clocks have sprung forwards. Mornings and afternoons are lighter, the snowdrops and crocuses have given way to Bluebells - spring has well and truly sprung! As I type it is lovely out there - blue, cloudless skies. My daughter has come home from school, red-cheeked and puffed out from the heat and walking - feeling proud that she’s managed to beat her 19-minute record. I, on the other hand have been limited to admiring the spring weather from afar - well from my window, to be exact. To make matters worse, my “step” count is dire (yep, I am a slave to my Fitbit!). On the weeks that I go to print, I’m lucky if I make 2 or 3 thousand steps - way off the recommended 10k steps a day. I’ll have to make up for it tomorrow... Don’t forget if you have an event coming up or belong to a group that could do with a little boost please do get in touch. In this edition I have loved being able to support Rubber Cheese, The Gibberd and Parndon Mill Gallleries, St Elizabeth’s, Harlow Carnival and the Rhys Daniels Trust plus everyone that appears on the community and listings pages, which are FREE. It’s also a great pleasure to have the support of local businesses, without whom this magazine would not exist. Welcome McPherson & Co Gardening Services and returning customers, Jacqui Robinson Yoga, Leventhorpe Community Classes and Wax & Relax Beauty Specialists. Thank you all! Until next month, Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow
Dear CM17 Readers, Recently, I spoke during a debate in the House of Commons to support a cap on energy bills. I have long campaigned to cut the cost of living for people in Harlow, working hard to freeze fuel duty and scrap hospital car parking charges. The cost of living is one of the most important issues facing the country and energy costs are a huge part of this. Our energy market is not competitive and the six largest energy providers earn £1.4 billion more than they should by leaving loyal customers on poor value tariffs. I was shocked to find out that a hardworking Harlow resident and his or her family may, therefore, be paying £300 extra for their energy, simply because they do not switch to a cheaper tariff with a different provider. The government is working to make switching supplier easier and quicker but lots of people do not have the time to even consider making a change. This leaves them on a standard tariff, paying hundreds of pounds extra for their energy. On top of this, some people are forced to pay fees for not signing up to payment by direct debit. I started my campaign against these extra charges in 2014 when I found
out that some companies charge up to £390 extra. These charges don’t seem to have gone away and people were charged over £70 more on average last year for not paying by direct debit. A cap on standard tariffs would bring an end to this. It would limit what people on Standard Variables Tariffs have to pay, leaving more money in their pockets. Alongside a cap, I think a Consumer Bill of Rights should also be introduced. It would be standardised across the energy industry and would guarantee a clear set of rights to every energy customer in the UK. I will continue to campaign to cut the cost of living for hardworking Harlow people. As always, if there’s anything I can do to help, please get in touch via halfon4harlow@ roberthalfon.com. Best wishes, Robert

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Pretty Ugley When it comes to bluebell woods, we’re spoilt for choice. This pretty ramble through fields and villages takes in several carpets of bluebells and there are more nearby around Quendon. Turn right out of the Chequers and right again on a lane leading towards cottages. Turn right at junction, follow lane to church and turn right once more on lane beyond it. Keep straight on path across fields to arrive, via another lane, in Ugley Green. Follow the road right and turn left by bus stop, past phone box. Turn right at footpath sign, through gate of Lavender Cottage. Keep straight on path to reach Alsa Wood and turn right through trees. At end of wood, turn right on path to lane and keep straight. At junction, take lane signed Stansted. Immediately after last house on right, turn right into another wood. Walk through wood to emerge from far right corner onto a path between fences. Follow it left around house to reach road. Cross over and walk straight up lane marked Bonnington Hall. Turn right at cottages and follow track past Wade’s Hall and alongside woods. Fork left on way-marked track leading into trees and, very soon, fork R at large oak onto narrower path past small pond. Cross little footbridge and keep straight over fields, under first line of pylons. Turn right along the hedge and keep following marked path through the woods ahead to return to the pub. LOCATION:

rubber cheese herts agency plans 15th birthday bonanza Sawbridgeworth-based digital agency, Rubber Cheese, celebrates 15 years in business with an ambitious year-long charity fundraiser. Founded in 2003, what started out as a foray into the world of graphic design has blossomed into a multi-award-winning team of digital experts, working with some of the world’s most exciting organisations. To celebrate 15 successful years, the team aim to raise £15,000 for the Tamba Bereavement Support Group, which exists to support parents and carers of multiple births who have experienced loss, whether during pregnancy, at birth or at any point afterwards. It’s a cause close to the heart of Founder and Managing Director, Kelly Molson. “Tamba BSG have been a huge support to myself and partner Lee after losing our twin girls Lily May and Ava in 2017. I’m really not sure how I’d have made it through the past 6 months without the peer to peer support I’ve received from the befriending service. This is a chance to do something really positive in return.” To achieve this ambitious target by 31 January, 2019, the team are going all out. Each member of the team will be taking on a 15-themed fundraising activity, all culminating in a huge birthday bash, currently slated for 15 September (National Cheese on Toast Day). The first two challenges take place in March & April. March 28th – 7.30pm - Fastest time To Eat A Can Of Cheddar Cheese Pringles
Kelly and Wag are going head to head in the first #15yearsofRubberCheese challenge. We’re attempting to smash the word record for Fastest Time To Eat A Can Of Cheddar Cheese Pringles which currently stands at 06:56.84 min/sec! April 19th - The RC 24 hour Danceathon Team Cheese are hitting the dance-floor for 24 hours of non-stop moves! 70’s, 80’s, 90’s – anything goes – from the Spice Girls to General Levy and The Killers. How can you help us? We’ll be live streaming to Facebook for your enjoyment, so dig deep and sponsor us. If you think you can take on the challenges, sponsor £15 and you can join us on the night at Rubber Cheese Towers to take part! Paul ‘Wag’ Wright, Creative Director, had this to say, “15 years in business is something to be incredibly proud of. We know this is a mammoth challenge, but as a team we are always pushing ourselves to the limits creatively, so why not this!” You can donate to this demanding goal at Rubber Cheese’s JustGiving page. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/15year sofrubbercheese

St elizabeth’s Community & corporate volunteering Programme St Elizabeth’s are delighted to be launching their Community and Corporate Volunteering Programme for 2018. Do you have a CSR (Corporate & Social Responsibility) programme? Why not get involved with St Elizabeth’s! St Elizabeth’s can offer a range of volunteering opportunities for both corporate and community volunteers of large or small groups from April – October. Whether it is assisting with gardening or lending a hand with painting, there is a role to suit everyone! St Elizabeth’s provide positive living and learning for people of all ages with severe epilepsy, learning disabilities and other complex needs. Based in Much Hadham on a 68-acre site, St Elizabeth’s consists of a school, college and adult home and includes residential housing and gardens to support over 200 children and adults. Volunteering can make a real difference to St. Elizabeth’s. By giving your time, the living
environment of all vulnerable beneficiaries is kept in a beautiful condition, enabling everyone to enjoy it all year round. Volunteering also ensures St Elizabeth’s can save on valuable resources and money that keep the site up to date. Above all, it’s a great team-building exercise! The volunteering dates will run from Monday 23rd April 2018 until Wednesday 24th October 2018, on Mondays and Wednesdays. There are two different types of volunteering roles available this year - general site maintenance (painting, gardening and tidying) & Ashvale (gardening, weeding, pruning etc., within “Ashvale”, the Horticultural Project). When your volunteering role comes to an end, St Elizabeth’s want to encourage all volunteers to remain engaged – from signing up to a challenge event, to running a company-wide bake sale or attending one of our fundraising events. The Centre would love for you to share your experience with your colleagues, friends and family!

the rhys Daniels trust providing a “home from home” for families when they need it most The Rhys Daniels Trust, based in Essex, is currently in its 24th year. The aim of the charity is to provide help for families who have a child in hospital having treatment. Barry & Carmen Daniels, who lived in Epping, had the traumatic experience of their child, Rhys, needing potentially lifesaving treatment but discovered their only option for this was at Bristol Children’s hospital. Many miles from home and with no accommodation provided other than that for one parent, the family faced living apart during this most stressful time. Much fundraising was done locally to help them have somewhere to stay together in Bristol, and that’s when the need was found. To have a ‘Home from Home’ that the whole family can stay in, free of charge, near to children’s hospitals. The family started the trust in Rhys’ name, who sadly did not survive his illness. But his legacy lives on in the most amazing way – with help provided to thousands of families over the last 20 years, all across the country. Fundraising over the years has resulted in flats purchased right near to children’s hospitals in which a family can stay in, without cost, for as long as their child is having treatment. A “Home from Home”.
Please come along and support our next event The Supercar Sunday on 29 April at North Weald Airfield from 10-4. If you would like to hold an event yourself in aid of the Rhys Daniels Trust please call us on 01992-570550 where we can offer you advice on ways to support this small but very worthwhile local children’s charity. Who we are The Rhys Daniels Trust is a UK registered charity that provides free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation at specialist children’s hospitals across the UK, which enable families to stay close to their child receiving treatment for a serious or life-threatening illness. All our facilities are self-contained and supplied free of charge for as long as the hospital and the Trust agrees the family needs them during the child’s hospital treatment. Some children are hospitalised for many months and some families return to our ‘Homes from Home’ as treatment progresses.
Throughout the year we hold fundraising events. Fundraising like this gives us the means to keep our homes up and running, whether it’s to replace furniture, get the bedrooms decorated, buy a new cooker – you name it, we have to get it done!

Charity of the year St Clare launches new day therapy services St Clare Hospice has launched a series of new services for 2018 to complement their current Day Therapy service. The Hastingwood-based hospice charity has been delivering free, expert advice and support to people across West Essex and East Herts, via their Day Therapy team, since the charity opened in 1990. Their Day Therapy service offers a wide-range of support for people with life-limiting conditions – supporting people and their families from the moment a life-limiting or terminal illness is diagnosed. Day Therapy care includes support from a multidisciplinary team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Registered Nurses and Complementary Therapists. The team run group therapy sessions; rehabilitate patients through physiotherapy and occupational therapy; support families to make adaptions to their homes so that they can remain independent; and offer specialist palliative support for conditions such as heart failure, respiratory diseases and neurological conditions, through their outpatient clinics. The support is holistic – supporting a person’s physical, psychological, practical and emotional needs. St Clare Day Therapy Manager, Emily Stowe, explains: “We often hear people say that they thought hospice care was ‘just for the last few days or weeks of someone’s life’ – and that is just not true. Day Therapy supports you from the moment you are diagnosed as having a lifelimiting condition – supporting you to process
what that diagnosis means, and empowering you to live your life to the full. When you have an illness or condition that cannot be cured, it is very easy to let the illness overcome you – and we often see people who feel like they are ‘just a patient’ and not a ‘person’ any more. Day Therapy supports people to take back control, to become ‘me’ again. We support people to live with their condition, to remain independent, and continue to fulfil their goals and dreams in life.” St Clare Hospice has consulted with patients, families and local clinical professionals and is launching a number of new services to complement their existing programme of activities.

Harlow Chorus The French National Day 14th July
Words by Mick Rumens
Our final concert of this season will be at All Saints Church, Hockerill, Bishops Stortford on Saturday 14th July at 7.30pm. On this day, in France, is the annual celebration of the storming of the Bastille in 1789, the event which began the French Revolution and eventually brought the reign of the hated Louis XVI to an end. As a contribution to these cerebrations we will be performing the Faure Requiem and the Rutter Requiem. Gabriel Faure (12/5/1845 - 4/11/1924) was a French composer, one of the foremost of his generation. He was born into a cultured, but not specially musical family, whose talent became clear when he was a small boy. At the age of nine years he was sent to a music college in Paris where he was trained to be a church organist and choirmaster. Among his teachers was Camille Sainte Saeus who became a lifelong friend. After graduating from college in 1865 he earned a modest living as an organist and teacher,
leaving him little time for composition. When he became successful in middle age, he held important the posts of organist at the Eglise de la Madeleine, and director of the Paris Conservatoire but still lacked time for composition. However, in his summer holidays, he would retreat to the countryside to concentrate on his composition work. Outside France, his music took decades to become widely accepted, except in Britain, where he had many admirers in his lifetime. During the last twenty years of his life, he suffered from increasing deafness. In contrast to the charm of his earlier music, his works for this period are sometimes elusive and withdrawn in character, and at other times turbulent and impassioned. Faure composed his Requiem in D Minor Op 48, between 1887 and 1890. This setting of the shortened Catholic Mass for the Dead is the best known of his large works.

harlow council The proposed route and date for this year’s Harlow Carnival has been unveiled
The carnival will take place on Sunday 26 August 2018, setting off from Bush Fair Shopping Centre at midday and ending in the Town Park showground at around 2pm. This will all be in time for the popular Linkfest music event, which this year will take place on the Showground and Bandstand. The street carnival, which was a regular popular event in the town in the past, returned last year as part of the Harlow is 70 celebrations. Bringing back the carnival proved to be a huge success, with over 600 taking part and around 5,000 people lining the streets. The Council hopes to build on last year’s event and make it bigger and better. This year the route will be extended and it is hoped that more groups and organisations will take part. It is proposed that the carnival procession will start from Bush Fair which is the same starting point as past Harlow carnivals. The procession will make it way down Tillwicks Road to Howard Way, past the Stow where it will go down First Avenue and turning into Fifth Avenue before making its way into the Town Park.
watching, there will be a number of road closures in place during the carnival. Councillor Emma Toal, Leader of Harlow Council, said: “I was lucky to be part of the parade last year and I remember seeing so many families lining the streets and cheering on the parade. The carnival created so many positive memories for all those who took part and it showed how much Harlow’s community spirit is still alive. It was an easy decision to make to bring it back every year as part of the legacy of Harlow’s 70th birthday celebrations. We want to give something back to local families and establish it once again as an annual event which all members of the family grow up remembering.” Residents, voluntary groups, social groups and commercial businesses are all being invited to take part. More information will be released in the coming weeks but interest can be registered www.harlow.gov. uk/carnival-form Keep an eye on the Council’s website www. harlow.gov.uk/carnival and Facebook and Twitter sites for more details in the coming months.

The Gallery at Parndon Mill
ebb & flow - Herts Textile Group The ribbons of water running through the towns and country of Hertfordshire motivated the new exhibition at Parndon Mill by the Herts Textile Group. The drop of water in the infant river as it travels through the county towards the sea, the hidden aspects, the natural chalk streams and rich spring waters to the man made canal system have been explored. These ribbons act as a reminder of the history of the people who populated the waterways in days gone by. A lock keeper’s daughter with dementia able to recall vivid memories of her childhood on a barge, the elaborate but practical bonnet of the canal women, the hard life of the working families plying the canals with their multifarious cargoes and the extraordinary history of canals. The watercress farms returning to wilderness or transforming into nature reserves in the chalk streams and the supply of drinking water to parts of the capital are themes examined. Walks along the towpaths, riverbanks and family boating excursions offer a personal

The Henry Moore Primary School National Outdoor Learning Day
On Thursday 12th October 2017, Year R took part in National Outdoor Classroom Day. Outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them with their learning and leads to greater connection with nature. All of our learning took part outside. We set the children 9 different tasks to complete outside in the morning. These included making soup, building dens and scarecrows and making bird feeders. In the afternoon we cooked our soup on a camping gas hob, went on and autumn hunt and listened to songs and stories about scarecrows. It was a lovely day. We look forward to taking part again.
