HELLO AND WELCOME TO The May edition of the cm17 connection

CONNECTION

The Bluebells are a little late this year, which has provided me with a great opportunity to use them on the front cover - any excuse! They are also a little nod to my oldest friend Marie happy Bluebell Wood anniversary! Marie and I go back a long, long way - senior school no less (Latton Bush for anyone that’s interested). And it just so happens that our school year are all celebrating their 50th birthdays from Sept 2017 to Aug 2018 (2017/2018). Happy 50th birthday to everyone in the class of 1984! You may remember back in January I said that I intended to make it a year full of adventures to mark my 50th milestone, well myself and Marie will be trekking the Great Wall of China raising funds for the Alzheimer’s society! It’s not until October, which is a blessing as in my 50th year I find myself seriously unfit, overweight and menopausal! So there is another challenge for me, to sort myself out enough so that I don’t become a burden when we’re scaling the wall! (And I’m ignoring all thoughts about anything of height that we may encounter, as I don’t “do” heights... I have a tendency to start drifting towards the precipice or freezing completely in panic.) I think this will be a big challenge for me... I cannot wait! This time last year I was getting ready to the Streets2Homes Sleepout... This year it’s on Friday 11th May, just in case you fancied a challenge closer to home...

Until next month, Lorraine

ADVERTISING FEATURE

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear Residents, In February, it was announced that Osler House in Potter Street would close its doors to patients at the end of April. Since then, I have stayed in regular contact with many concerned residents about the closure but I thought it would be a good idea to update all CM17 readers on what has been going on since the announcement. On hearing the news, I instantly thought it was a poor decision to close Osler House. Harlow is a rapidly expanding town and it makes no sense to close a surgery which has been serving Potter Street for over 60 years. The issues are clear. Meaningful consultation with patients, user groups, and the community, which could have highlighted other available options, did not take place. The accessibility of, transfer of data to and registration at alternative surgeries for those living in the Potter Street area, many who are elderly or living in sheltered housing, are proving problematic. Finally, with a huge increase in funding (West Essex CCG will receive £24 million extra in 2018/19 than in 2016/17), the decision to close the surgery is questionable. Given the clear concern amongst residents, and my own objections, in February, I immediately wrote to the Chief Officer and the Chair of the CCG to challenge their decision and held discussions with the Chief Officer and the Director of Primary Care to

discuss local concerns further. The Residents’ Association has kept me up to date with the local situation which I have discussed with NHS Minister Steve Brine MP back in Parliament. The Government is aware of the actions of the CCG and I have called on the Health Minister to write to the CCG and ask them to restore this vital service to residents. You can find my Commons motion raising the issue at https://tinyurl.com/y7bsxvqs. Going forward, I will continue battling for funding to ensure GP surgeries are able to provide care to everyone, especially the most vulnerable, and that sufficient services are available to Potter Street residents following the Osler House closure. I will also continue my campaign for capital funding for a new hospital in Harlow, vital in bringing health care in Harlow into the 21st Century. If you’ve been affected by the closure in any way, please get in touch via halfon4harlow@ roberthalfon.com. I will do all I can to help. Best wishes, Robert.

IT’S YOUR COMMUNITY

Venture Into Volunteering local volunteering opportunities...

We have a variety of interesting volunteering roles available for people wishing to get involved in their local community. A couple of local radio stations are keen to recruit volunteers to train as presenters and to also learn about the technical side of running a radio station, producing shows etc. This could suit journalism or media students or people with a special interest in music or have ideas for interesting shows, or people who just enjoy the radio. If you are interested in health and wellbeing you may like to get involved with a new weight management group, supporting people who are keen to improve their health by helping to run group sessions, sharing resources etc. Training is provided for all volunteers. Also needed is a qualified beauty therapist to provide treatments to women who have had a cancer diagnosis. This project runs from St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping, once a month. The annual Summer Reading Challenge organised by Essex Libraries is seeking volunteers to help run the scheme in a local library during the school summer holidays.

The role includes signing up children to the scheme, (the children are usually 4 to 11 years of age), listening to the children talk about the books they have read and handing out the certificates and stickers. Volunteers aged 14 years and over are welcome to get involved and this is an ideal way to get experience to add to your CV. Are you someone that has a hour a week and would be willing to meet/visit someone in your community that is isolated or has a life limiting illness, have a cup of tea together, offer a listening ear and some of your time? The Compassionate Neighbour project, organised by St Clare Hospice aims to help reduce loneliness and promote community. Do you have professional skills you could share with a local voluntary or community group? Skills currently sought include web design and marketing, finance experience and human resources knowledge. If you would like to find out more about these opportunities or any others we have available, please get in touch.

tech: gadgets for you garden

the technology that can get your garden ready for summer It’s nearly that time of year again: the short period when we stop complaining about the cold and complain about the heat instead. But while the British summer might not be totally tropical, it does mean we can enjoy our gardens, allotments or anywhere else Mother Nature does her stuff. And increasingly, technology can give her a helping hand. One of the most important summer tasks is to keep everything hydrated, which isn’t always possible if you’re spending time away. Enter the Hozelock 20 Pot Watering Kit, a watering kit for up to 20 pots courtesy of an electronic timer. It’ll water patio pots or greenhouse plants, baskets or borders, and it’s 90% more efficient than a spray or sprinkler. That’s important when your water costs money. If that isn’t high-tech enough, the same firm offers a Cloud Connection Kit that enables you to control your watering system – whether it’s a single sprinkler or a 20-pot pourer – from your phone, and it works from anywhere you can get a data connection. It’s expensive (around £88) but if you’ve valuable plants it might be a wise investment. Technology can also help with more furry threats. An ultrasonic cat repeller has a motion detector so it only works when needed, and it uses ultrasonic sound that annoys cats but not people. It also works with other visitors: squirrels, foxes and even some insects. Expect to pay £25 for two. We’re still waiting for really affordable robot gardeners, but in the meantime we can make do with a robot lawnmower. They’re still pricey, but prices are plummeting: what cost £2,500 or more two years ago is now around £550.

12

For example the £549 (on special offer) Worx Landroid is smartphone-controlled, suitable for lawns of up to 450 square metres and can cope with gradients of up to 19 degrees. If someone could also invent a robot to pick up after the dog we’d be delighted. Cordless mowers have been getting cheaper and better too. Flymo’s Mighti Mo has a whopping 40V 2Ah Li-ion battery and at £189 it’s comparable with good quality corded or petrolpowered models. It should cope with up to 250 square metres before needing a recharge. The same kind of power is now available in chainsaws too, such as the Greenworks 40V cordless chainsaw. For £179 it offers a 12” cutting area and promises ‘ferocious’ performance – and despite the battery pack it weighs a very reasonable 3.4kg. There’s a larger sixteen-inch version on Amazon for £139, but you’ll need to buy the battery and charger separately. Advances in battery technology and power management means that pretty much anything that used to need a cable doesn’t any more, which is great news for those of us prone to accidentally cutting through live electrical cables. It’s particularly handy for tools such as hedge trimmers and branch loppers (or ‘jawsaws’ as they’re sometimes called), as those jobs tend to be at the very edges of your property – usually as far away from your power point as you can get. Just make sure you remember to charge them in advance: sadly it takes a lot longer to charge the battery for a chainsaw than it does to charge your phone, and the last thing you want is a power tool that runs out of power just when you need it most.

Charity of the year St Clare OPen Gardens

St Clare Open Gardens event set to return to Harlow for its 24th year! More than 30 venues, including 18 gardens in Harlow, will be opening their gates to the public in aid of St Clare Hospice during their 24th annual Open Gardens event. New for 2018, the perennially popular horticultural event will take place across the summer season – from May through to July – rather than over a single weekend. This means that green-fingered fans of the event will have even longer to explore the dozens of gardens that will be opening for the hospice charity. Open Gardens event organisers are hoping to raise more than £5,000 for the Hospice across the summer season. Starting in May and continuing throughout the summer season, lovers of flora and fauna will be able to explore some of the best kept green spaces in the hospice’s catchment area – from the villages of Thornwood and Epping Upland to the gardens and allotment spaces of Harlow. Eighteen of the venues are located in Harlow, Old Harlow and Bishopsfield and will be opening on the dates listed (opposite page).

the gate and entry costs from £3 per garden, or group of gardens. Tea, cakes and lunches are available in many of the gardens. A free guidebook which includes details of each of the participating gardens or groups of gardens, and the cost of entry, can be picked up in any of the 8 St Clare Hospice charity shops, or at the Hospice Reception. For more information call Dani on 01279 773738 or email dani@stclarehospice.org.uk For a full list of the participating gardens visit: stclarehospice.org.uk/events

Harlow Chorus A successful debut concert with our new Musical Director Words by Mick Rumens

Our March concert at St John’s Church, Epping, was greatly appreciated by all who were able to come to hear the Chorus, supported by four excellent soloists and the British Sinfonietta Orchestra. Many of the audience were very complementary during the interval, and the soloists, and the members of the orchestra, have expressed their pleasure at being given the opportunity to perform with Harlow Chorus and hope to do so again in the future. There is no doubt that in Edward-Rhys Harris we have acquired a young man of exceptional talent and enormous skill in his methods and abilities to coach the best out of the choir. We have all been enjoying his humorous, but highly effective coaching style, which has made our rehearsals very enjoyable and rewarding. If there are any singers who are looking to join a chorus, then come along to our rehearsal evenings for a few weeks to give us ‘an audition’. We would be pleased to make you very welcome and I’m sure that you too will enjoy participating in some fun rehearsals and top class concerts. If you are not a singer, but enjoy concerts offered by a top class choir, with soloists, then how about giving us your support by becoming “Friends of Harlow Chorus’. Please go to our website to obtain details.

For our next concert at All Saints Church, Hockerill, Bishop’s Stortford on July 14th we will be joined by Emily Wenman, soprano, and Edward Kaye, baritone. In addition we will have the pleasure of Edward Kemp-Luck on the Organ and the British Sinfonietta orchestra. The programme will begin with the Rutter Requiem then an interval, and the orchestra will perform Faure’s Pavane Op.50 before combining with the soloists and chorus in the Faure Requiem to complete the evening. This will undoubtedly be a pleasurable evening and our audience will recognise movements from the Faure Requiem which are so hauntingly beautiful that they are often played by request on the radio. In this regard, In Paradisum will be particularly familiar to many listeners. More on this concert in the next edition of CM17 Connection. Finally, I have recently heard that our first concert of next season, our Remembrance Day commemoration of 100 years since the end of the First World War, will be Karl Jenkins ‘The Armed Man’ which we will perform at All Saints, Hockeril. We last performed this some years ago at Passmores Academy with the Henry Moore choir. I’m sure that this will be an unmissable concert under the direction of our brilliant new Musical Director, Edward-Rhys Harris, and that tickets will be in great demand. Worth putting in your diaries!

community funding project Harlow soup Seeks Submissions for Next Event 24th May

The community-led funding group, Harlow SOUP is requesting new entries for its second event in May. Entrance to the event is on a “pay what you can” basis and the dinner served on the eveing includes homemade soup, breads, salads and cakes. There will also be live music and a chance to find out about new and exciting projects taking place in Harlow.

For more information or to submit your idea for consideration for the next Harlow SOUP please visit: www.harlowsoup.co.uk Event details: Thursday 24th May, Pemberley Academy, Harlow, 6.30pm – 9pm.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING RICOTTA STUFFED PORK

4 thin-cut pork loin steaks 175g ricotta cheese 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest Salt & freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp olive oil 15g butter

4 tbsp dry sherry or apple juice

This is a great way to jazz up pork steaks for a midweek meal. Serve

175g green beans, trimmed

with brown rice or creamy mashed

2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

potatoes on the side, if liked.

450ml meat or vegetable stock

1. Place the pork steaks between two sheets of cling film or greaseproof paper and bash with a rolling pin until very thin. 2. In a small bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the chopped basil and lemon zest and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture at the base of each piece of pork then carefully roll up to enclose the stuffing and secure each with a wooden cocktail stick. 4. Heat the oil and butter in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the pork rolls for 4-5 minutes, turning once until browned all over. Pour in the stock and sherry or apple juice and simmer for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Remove the pork rolls and keep warm. Add the green beans to the frying pan and cook for 5-6 minutes until just tender. 5. Slice each pork roll and serve on the green beans with the pan juices and toasted pine nuts.

TIP: If you don’t have fresh basil use 1 tsp dried mixed herbs and for extra flavour add a crushed garlic clove.
