WELCOME
THE
CM17
HELLO AND WELCOME TO The June edition of the cm17 connection I’ve been busy. Mid May I commissioned 3 surveys for the magazine: one for advertisers, one for residents and one for local charities. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone (there’s always good to be found outside of it isn’t there!) however, it was made a lot easier with the help and support of Ankrah Associates (thank you Yvette!). Based on the feedback I will be making some enhancements to the mag in the coming months. They say a change is as good as a rest and I hope that I’ll be able to demonstrate that I’ve listened to the feedback that you’ve given me and make this the best community & local business magazine in Essex! This month it’s a great pleasure to welcome: Broadoak Kitchens Ltd, CSR Piano Tuning, Essex Bootcamp, Jon Vanner, Tracker Pest Control and returning customers: Ken Brown Motors, Harlow Arts Council, Material Life, Serenity and Shwe Tanning & Beauty, to this months magazine. Thank you! China Trek 2018 Update: Marie and I have started our walking regime - 7.5 miles is our longest walk to date - we need to get that up to 20 miles over a mixed terrain before October! We’ve created our just giving page - https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/mariandlorraineschinatrek2018 and are now busy planning fundraising events, which includes an afternoon tea party, a clothing swap party, a quiz night and quite possibly a class of 1984 school reunion (tee hee!).

Essex Inter-varsity club (IVC) A Social and activity Club for ADULTS
Essex
Essex IVC is a social and events group for single adults and married couples. It offers the chance to widen horizons, to have fun, to perhaps try something new, to socialise and to make new friends, It holds events throughout the year across most of the county. We frequently have meals out, walks in the country, (invariably involving tea and cakes!) social get togethers and theatre outings. Other regular events include pub nights, ten pin bowling and badminton, or you could go dancing, play Scrabble or Rummikub, see a film or a play or have a game of cards. Coming up in June there are Open Gardens, a Beer Festival, an Art School day course and a walking weekend in Yorkshire! As well as the regular events in the coming summer there is a Music Festival, a day rowing with of course afternoon tea and a day sailing. None of these appeal to you? What about a game of badminton? Or find something you would like to do but would like someone to go with then host an event of your own. There is always a committee member who will help with your first event. The club is open to single people or couples, all those with a lively mind and sociable attitude.

Harlow arts council & harlow museum present The Art of the garden party 2018 It’s summer and for Harlow Museum and Harlow Arts Council that means only one thing – it’s time for the annual Art of the Garden Party. Taking place on Sunday 1 July from 1pm – 4.30pm it’s now the sixth year running that Sharon Davies and her team have welcomed many of the town’s performing arts groups and the local community into the museum gardens for a free afternoon of entertainment. The idea for the afternoon began in 2011 when Harlow Arts Council decided to run a small Arts Festival to promote the vibrancy and diversity of arts across the town. As the Festival increased in size, HAC wanted the opportunity to bring its members to the community without any cost to the audience, making the afternoon truly accessible to everyone. The Museum presented a perfect venue with its beautiful walled gardens, and a unique environment for the groups to perform in. This year sees an amazing line up of performers across the generations sharing their passion for song, music and dance. New Edition Singers will collaborate with St. James’ School Choir to bring together a range of voices, ages and love of singing whilst Harlow Chorus and De Merc Choirs will present a range of both classical and more contemporary pieces. Efua Sey Cultural Academy bring their joyful
African Drumming and Dance steeped in tradition and community cohesion. Dance continues with the energy of the young performers in street dance group Hip Hop Pop whilst the ever popular Harlow Rock School return with their young musicians performing with full band and acoustically. There’s the opportunity to connect with your inner harmony with a Qigong & Tai-Chi performance by Ian Bowland and plenty of laughter and audience involvement with drama group Razed Roof. There is also plenty to do on the Community Green run by the Volunteer Centre Harlow and Rainbow Services including children’s creative activities and an opportunity to meet local voluntary groups. The Art of the Garden Party is a true community event made possible by the generous support of Harlow Recreation Trust and the Essex County Council Chairman’s Fund which is managed by Essex Community Foundation, as well as the Stansted Airport Community Trust. Art of the Garden Party, Sunday 1 July 1pm-4.30pm Entrance Free. Harlow Museum Gardens, Muskham Road, off First Avenue Refreshments available to buy or bring your own picnic. Chairs will be available but due to limited numbers please bring a picnic rug or folding chair if you have one.

gatehouse arts artess 21st may - 10th june
Artess.co.uk is the brainchild of two Hertfordshire based artists, Karen Huwen and Linda Ruffin. They create beautiful modern artwork from Acrylic inks, mica powders and glitter encapsulated in Resin for a smooth shiny finish. Each piece is intricately detailed, and totally unique. Karen is a self taught artist who started her career as a graphic designer owning her own award winning agency in London. In later life she founded a successful business providing exceptional face and body art and has been in high demand from many corporate clients for her skills. Alongside this business she
has started painting on canvas using acrylic paints, alcohol inks and resin. She has sold many pieces and commissions in the short time since starting with these mediums and has been asked to create an “Art Wall” for a charity garden at the Chelsea Flower Show this year. A very prestigious commission indeed! Linda has been painting in various forms for over 20 years. Like Karen, she is a professional face and body artist and has worked in the private sector for over 8 years including several years of theatre productions. She is also a working mural artist creating wall art for many homes in and around Hertfordshire. Linda is inspired by nature and macro images of flora and fauna, and enjoys working with Resin, pigments and mica powders to create unique artwork full of depth and detail.

Charity of the year Hospice calls on local schools and supporters to ‘Go Bright for st Clare! St Clare Hospice is calling on their local schools, workplaces and community groups across West Essex and East Hertfordshire to put their creative fundraising skills to the test by taking part in their second annual Go Bright Week. The hospice charity is running the weeklong campaign as part of their community fundraising activities and the event promises to be the ‘brightest week in the St Clare calendar.’ Taking place from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd July, St Clare supporters are invited to hold ‘bright’ events in aid of the charity – raising awareness and funds for the cause. St Clare Community Fundraising Lead, Dani De’ath, is co-ordinating Go Bright Week and explained: “Go Bright is all about supporting St Clare Hospice, your local hospice charity. Our lovely, bright St Clare logo is all the colours of the rainbow and we want to celebrate the brightness and happiness that St Clare brings to the lives of our community – by holding a whole week of bright, rainbow-coloured celebrations for St Clare!” Dani continued: “One of the first things patients and families often say to us when they arrive at St Clare is how lovely and bright the hospice is, and what a happy and peaceful atmosphere it has. It is often not what they expected, as they imagine a hospice to be a dull and dingy place. That is another reason why we have chosen to
call it Go Bright Week – helping to spread the word that St Clare is a bright and happy place.” Commenting on range of Go Bright events that participants could organise, Dani said: “Why not hold a Go Bright dress-down day at your school or workplace – by donning the brightest clothes in your wardrobe; bake a bright rainbow cake and hold a bake sale; wear a bright-coloured wig for the day or wear your brightest facepaint? Whether you dress up, eat cake, wear a wig or paint your face, you will be part of the brightest week in the St Clare calendar – and help to raise awareness of our work and raise much-needed funds for us.” Go Bright Week will start with St Clare’s first-ever Go Bright Walk held on Saturday 14th July in the Water Gardens in Harlow. The new summer 5k fundraiser promises to be the ‘brightest 5k in town’ and the event is suitable for the whole family. The walk will set off at 11am with a familyfriendly festival of stalls, games and treats from 10am to 3pm. Running from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd July Go Bright Week is open to all local schools, businesses and community groups across West Essex and East Hertfordshire – the catchment area of the hospice. For more information about how you can get involved in St Clare’s Go Bright Week contact Dani, detaiils below.

LOCALs that relaunch: back in 2010 Sarah Aherne started her first business, Shwe tan, it soon evolved into shwe tanning & beauty. Now In June 2018 sarah has opened her new salon along old harlow high street. Read on to find out about this dynamic and dedicated businesswoman... Tell us a bit about you? I’ve lived in Harlow my whole life, I went to Mark Hall School, then onto Harlow College, studied Accountancy in London, then Business Management and have gone on probably about 30 courses / training days in the past 3 years which have helped me to get to where I am today. What work did you do before setting up Shwe Tanning and Beauty? My background is completely different to what I currently do now, I was working for JP Morgan in London as a Fund Accountant. Working in my role gave me lots of skills which I used to help me start up my own business. What made you decide to set up your own business? I loved my job in the City, I worked really hard and the 3-hour round commute had never bothered me, as in my eyes, I got to work in the best City in the world. I absolutely love London and met so many amazing people! Sadly over the years things changed as they often do in such large corporate companies, and I was continually having to work harder and Phone: 01279 939890 Email: info@shwetan.co.uk Web: www.ShweTan.co.uk FB: www.facebook.com/shwetanuk/ IG: www.instagram.com/shwetanuk/

longer hours for less appreciation. Getting back into Harlow late at night from work, helped me notice that there was a gap in the market for people who wanted to treat themselves. I’d often get home between 8pm and 10pm and back in 2010 there was no where that I knew of that was offering tanning & beauty services this late. I knew it wasn’t just busy professionals that would want to use a salon in the evenings after a hard days work, busy mums would too! After running around after the kids all day, they could put their kids to bed when Dad was home and could pop out and pamper themselves! So I wanted to open a business that catered for people just like that! What has been the most valuable lesson learnt so far? I’ve learnt how to manage my time and how to be super organised. Every single person has the same number of minutes in a day and you can really squeeze the most from your time, if you plan ahead. I write down my goals and go get them. I don’t waste any time watching TV or doing anything I don’t want to do, I’m very focused.

special special feature feature
Do you work at any other job or occupation? Not now, but I did work at my job in London for 4 years whilst establishing my business. I used to get up at 5am and work at home before I left for work, then sit on the train to London and work, spend my lunch break working on my business then when I’d get back to Harlow, I’d either go to the salon to work or go home and work until late, AND I used to work in there at the weekends too! I look back and genuinely don’t know how I did it, I guess it was sheer determination to succeed both for myself and for my team – at the end of the day, I had a job, but this was their only job, and it meant everything to me to make sure I didn’t let them down, and let my business go down the shoot! What are you most proud of? I wanted to create a business where everyone was smiling, clients and the staff and me too, so I took everything I didn’t like about my old job about how they made people feel and turned it around and made it everything that I now love. Our 16 members of staff say they’ve never worked anywhere that cares so much about both the staff and the clients. Every team member is trained and developed to be the best they can be, and truly cared for, which makes the environment so special. Our clients always comment on what a nice environment it is and that’s what we do, make people smile. That is what I am so proud of. Tell us about the new salon... In December 2017 my partner and I were at a business seminar and it was then that we decided to expand the business. The Old Newsagents had been sitting empty on the High Street in Old Harlow, and I could really visualise us moving the beauty side of the business there and I’m so proud that we have achieved our goal and am grateful to all who helped us, there was so much hard work put in, as you can see from the photos!
The Sun Beds have remained in Select house (across the road from Zenz & Barclay’s) and at our new salon we have 3 treatment rooms, so we can offer even more treatments such as Massage, HD Brows, Russian Lashes and Dermalogica Facials. We have 2 nail bars so can carry out double the number of nails, 2 pedicure areas, 2 Spray Tan Booths and we’ll be adding a makeup area soon! We are known as the best Spray Tanners in Essex and we were turning away so many clients for Spray Tans. Now that we have 2 Spray Tan Booths our clients can come at the same time as their friend and in 15 minutes have a beautiful tan! We can now Spray Tan 8 clients in an hour, which we know is going to make a lot of ladies very happy! Anything else that you would like to tell us? Unlike most salons, we’re open 82 hours a week to fit in with client’s busy lives. Whether they’re a Mum who has put her kids to bed, or a City worker who gets home late, everyone deserves to have some time out for themselves.

We also intend to be participating in the Harlow
As well as the Faure Requiem and the Rutter Requiem, the programme will also include two other pieces by Faure, his stunningly beautiful ‘Cantique de Jean Racine’ and his exquisite ‘Pavane’ for orchestra. Our programme publicity rightly describes the works to be heard as, “offering a message of light and hope expressed through truly beautiful and uplifting music”.
of entertainment in the beautiful gardens last
The chorus has worked very hard to produce a near perfect performance of both Requiems, but there is much more ‘polishing’ to do for us to perform a truly professional and inspiring performance for our audience on the night. I’m very sure that Edward will hone all the many talented singers in the choir to ensure a most memorable evening for our many supporters.
Council Arts gathering at the Museum gardens on 1st July. You may recall that many of the Towns art groups, singers and dancers, young and somewhat older, provided an afternoon year and, no doubt, this will be another brilliant occasion for us all to enjoy. Please put it in you diaries and come along to support all the participants and charities taking part. For those who may have missed our invitation last month, we are still looking to welcome any singers who would like to join the Harlow Chorus, and enjoy the many benefits of singing with our friendly group. St. John’s Arts and Recreational Centre in the Old Town is the venue. Monday evenings at 7.30pm to 10pm (except Bank Holidays). Don’t miss out, there are so many brilliant concerts in store.

public notice graveyard at st mary magdalene church From Fr James Rodley on behalf of the Parochial Church Council (PCC)
Our graveyard is much appreciated by many in our local community, not only as a place to remember their loved ones but also as a place of peace in a rather busy world. Unlike at the large municipal cemetery at Parndon Wood, responsibility for the graveyard at St Mary Magdalene belongs to the Parochial Church Council (effectively the church congregation). We’ve recently built a new area for burying ashes, so if any residents of Potter Street want to know more about this, please contact me. At the same time the PCC have felt it necessary to draw up some new guidelines as to what can and can’t be left in the graveyard: we’ve got a responsibility in church law to make sure that anything that’s not authorised by the Diocesan regulations isn’t put up in the graveyard. (The regulations are there to make sure that the graveyard is kept at its best for everyone). This includes: • Monuments such as statues or other stonework that have not been specifically approved by faculty (legal permission) from the Diocese of Chelmsford. • Candles, wind chimes and other decorations • Artificial flowers (these are not allowed because they are not natural and can endanger wildlife).
• Extra plants and shrubs in pots on top of plots, which make it impossible to mow the grass and keep the churchyard looking its best So we request respectfully that all unauthorised structures, decorations, artificial flowers and extra pot plants be removed by 31st July 2018. Any items left over by 31st October 2018, will be removed, labelled and bagged/boxed for collection by families within 12 months. We also ask, on a continuing basis, that: • Plastic wrappings must be removed from flowers. • All rubbish and discarded plants must be removed. If anyone isn’t sure what’s allowed or not, they should please contact me. We’re inviting anyone who wants to join us at church on the morning of Saturday 21st July (10-12 noon) for refreshments and the chance to air any concerns and ask any questions. I’m happy to let anyone have a copy of the new policy for our graveyard if they’d like one.

The Henry Moore Primary School Science Week During the 5th-9th March 2018, the children of Henry Moore Primary school took part in Science Week. This year’s topic focused on ‘The Exploration and Discovery of Famous Female Scientists’, coinciding with the 100-year anniversary since the first group of women were granted the right to vote. The week started off with a bang with both Mr Huggett and Mrs Gomes introducing this year’s topic through a fun and lively assembly. After, all year groups congregated on the school’s playing field to release 200 balloons as part of the ‘Great Balloon Race.’ Reports have already come in that some of the balloons had managed to reach as far as Peterborough! Throughout the week, a variety of scientific activities were put on for the children which, not only required them to use scientific skills, but also other skills from across the curriculum. These activities have included building the tallest spaghetti and marshmallow tower, carrying out ‘The Periodic Table Treasure Hunt,’ competing in the Science fair, using investigative skills to carry out British Science Week activities, and sharing their findings of the week through assemblies. Many visitors came to the school during the week to perform science shows and share how they use science in their jobs. We were even surprised by the celebrity guest appearance of Mr Albert Einstein! “The week has been a tremendous success. It has raised the awareness of science in our school in a fun and engaging way and has inspired our children to carry on with their learning at home. We would like to thank all of the parents for their support and hope the week has sparked future careers in this field for some of our children.” A big thank you to Mr Huggett and Mrs Gomes for organising the week!

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice granddaughter records song to raise funds for hospice charity A student midwife from Harlow has honoured her grandmother by creating a charity song to raise funds for the hospice who cared for her. Kerry Garner (37 years from Harlow, now living in Welwyn) has created a charity CD of her original song ‘What a difference a year makes’ in honour of her grandmother Joan Poole, and to raise vital funds for St Clare Hospice where Joan received care in December 2017. Joan Poole (84 years from Harlow) was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May 2016 and received support from St Clare’s Day Therapy team, as well as spending time on their Inpatient Unit in Hastingwood in December 2017. Joan died on 17th December at the age of 84 years. Kerry was inspired to raise funds with a charity CD after speaking to Nan about how St Clare had helped her. Kerry Garner said: “I was visiting my Nan when she said that she wanted to find a way to thank the Hospice for their care. That was when I suggested that I make a charity CD for St Clare.
