A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow
Dear Residents, It’s always busy in Parliament in the run up to summer. You may have heard about the votes on leaving the European Union, which I supported every single time, but I’ve also been working hard to protect our NHS and champion education and skills in our town. I recently found out that almost three times as many people started apprenticeships in Harlow last year than ten years earlier. I have been passionate about apprenticeships since the day I entered politics and have championed them ever since. This increase is great news and means that more and more Harlow residents are climbing the ladder of opportunity, to get the education and skills they deserve, to achieve the jobs, security and prosperity, they and our country need. In September, Stansted Airport College will be opening its doors to its first students, in association with the great Harlow College. If you’re looking to retrain or you want to develop your skills after leaving school, then there are a huge number of courses available - from engineering to communications, PR and marketing. To find out more, just google “Stansted Airport College”. The development of a new hospital in Harlow could also bring specialist training to the East Region, sending the message that Harlow is a place to start and develop an amazing and longterm career in the NHS. I have been working hard to get the capital funding the Princess Alexandra Trust needs to develop a new hospital health campus, including bringing a debate on the hospital to the House of Commons in June. The hospital health campus would bring together A&E services, GP provision, social
care, physiotherapy and a centre for Degree Apprenticeships in nursing and healthcare in state of the art, purpose-built facilities. The Government is due to make a decision on new hospital capital funding this autumn - I will keep you all updated. I’ve also been doing all I can to push the Government to scrap hospital car parking charges at NHS hospitals in England. I’ve been campaigning for this change since 2014. The Government brought in guidance to introduce concessionary rates and limit the effects of the charges on the most vulnerable. The trouble is, none of the hospitals have to listen. I’ve launched a petition to bring an end to this stealth tax on the vulnerable, once and for all. Go to https://tinyurl.com/y8e6nern to sign the petition and bring the issue back to Parliament. Best wishes, Robert

harlow soup community funding project
Harlow SOUP’s second event saw Aspire Support Learn (ASL) win £551.21 towards their tea room project. The second ever Harlow SOUP took place on Thursday 24th May and saw over 100 people in attendance raising over £550 for winners Aspire Support Learn (ASL). Hosted at Pemberley Academy, the event featured four community projects pitching to win the money collected on the door, which was on a “pay what you feel” basis. Over 100 community diners attended the evening to find out about new community projects, vote for their favourite and sample the delicious homemade soup. The winning project was ASL, a community interest company that offers employment opportunities and day care, as well as life skills, for adults with additional needs. ASL’s moving pitch explained that they would use the funds to buy their own equipment for their own dedicated tearoom. The new space would enable ASL to open up the tearooms to more customers to help sustain the success of the organisation. The three other pitches were also very well received and included: football equipment for Northbrooks FC to support children and local people, materials to build a garden for the dementia ward and other wards at Princess
Alexandra Hospital and funding to buy a defibrillator for Little Acorns pre-school. Previous winners Streets 2 Homes also attended to both take part and feedback on how the money was spent. Streets 2 Homes had successfully been able modernise and update their toilets using the money raised from the previous event and were happy to support the second Harlow SOUP. The next Harlow SOUP event will take place on Thursday 30th August, and submissions are now open for new and exciting Harlow-based projects. The only criteria for submission is that the project benefits the town. For more information or to submit your idea for consideration for the next Harlow SOUP please visit www.harlowsoup.co.uk

THE MAJOR EVENT OF THE YEAR FOR THE MILL In this idyllic setting, thirty studios offer an insight into the creative process and the opportunity “have a go”. An amazing diversity of talent and skills are nurtured at Parndon Mill and will be on view during the Open Studios event. In addition to the fine arts of painting and sculpture, skilled craftwork in glass, weaving, calligraphy, guitar making, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, printing and metalwork can be seen here this weekend. There will also be an insight into architectural skills and the work of graphic and product designers. The artists, craftspeople and designers will talk about their work and demonstrate their techniques. There will also be opportunities to “have a go” at many of the crafts. Glass blowing is especially exciting and can result in taking away a bauble or a vessel. Following last year’s success, in the Art Play Tent for children, Deana Kim Page will invite every
It will be a privilege to listen to Richard Ove Stokkereit playing one of David Rouse’s classical guitars in his studio from time to time during the weekend. Examples of the work of most of the participating artists will be exhibited in The Project Space on the ground floor and will hopefully tempt viewers to make the climb to the top floor of the mill. The exhibition in The Gallery, happenstance, will display work by a diverse group of contemporary artists who have come together to explore printmaking in the inspiring setting of Parndon Mill. Refreshments including a barbecue and home made cakes will be available throughout the weekend.

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
BOATS AND BEACH HUTS This stroll around seaside Harwich is just over an hour’s drive away, but feels like another world. Even better, take the train via Manningtree – it runs beside the scenic Stour estuary through a wonderful watery landscape. Harwich is full or maritime history and long atmospheric beaches. Start near Harwich Town station and walk towards the High Lighthouse ahead, the official start of the long distance Essex Way. There’s free roadside parking nearby. Turn left, right and left again into Church Street, passing the Guildhall. Turn right into Market Street and left into Kings Head Street with former home of Christopher Jones, captain of the Mayflower, at number 21. At the end of the road, turn right along the Quay past Ha’penny Pier and the waterside café. Follow the road right into King’s Quay Street and Wellington Road. Walk along the waterfront, past the Treadwheel Crane and Low Lighthouse. Keep going, with the sea on your left for 1½ miles, passing two more lighthouses. Reaching some ponds by a long row of beach huts, turn back along Lower Marine Parade. At the statue of Queen Victoria, turn left into Kingsway and right into High Street, bearing left into Main Road. Don’t miss the Redoubt, a large circular fort built in 1808 to protect the harbour from a Napoleonic invasion. Continue up main road back to the High Lighthouse and station. LOCATION:

Harlow Chorus The end of our 43rd season
Words by Mick Rumens
Our final concert for this season, at All Saints Church, Hockerill, Bishop’s Stortford on 14th July, will lead us into our summer break until we commence our new season in September. I sincerely hope to see many of our old, and newer, supporters for our France National Day concert, when we will entertain you with the beautiful Faure Requiem as its centre piece. Our preparations have been tirelessly coached by our new, and highly respected Musical Director, Edward-Rhys Harry, and those who are in our audience can be assured of our very best performance. During June, we have been involved in auditions for our new piano accompanist to replace Susan Graham-Smith who had to leave us in January after twenty-five years. A hard act to follow, and, indeed, we have had a very hard task to find some one of her enormous quality to replace her. Our committee and Musical Director had a short list of eight top applicants who attended our rehearsals in turn to accompany the chorus for half a session each. They were all enormously talented and the task of making
the final selection will not be an easy one. Sadly at the time of writing, the process has yet to be completed so I will have to reveal the final choice later. I mentioned this so that those interested will see that Harlow Chorus is very highly regarded in the quality of choral directors and accompanists seeking to join us. We are still looking to welcome any singers who would like to join us, especially any Tenors, and any interested should refer to our website for more details. When we return in September we shall begin our preparations for our first concert in November, which will be Sir Karl Jenkins brilliant Requiem “The Armed Man”. A work which was subtitled “ A Mass for Peace” and was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium celebrations to mark the museum’s move from London to Leeds. It was dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo crisis and is a work of great power and sensitivity. On behalf of the Chorus, we wish you all a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in the new season.

Charity of the year sign up to be a compassionate neighbour
The Compassionate Neighbours project is looking for more volunteers to join their brand new volunteer-led project which is helping to tackle loneliness and isolation across West Essex and East Herts. Outlining the role of a Compassionate Neighbour, St Clare Hospice’s Compassionate Neighbours Project Manager Stacey Towler said: “People living with a life-limiting illness often struggle with loneliness and social isolation. Compassionate Neighbours can really make a difference and offer some extra support. They are a network of trained volunteers who offer their time, companionship and a listening ear to people living in their community who are coping with illness or old age. Compassionate Neighbours help others by visiting regularly; offering companionship and emotional support; helping them to do the things they like doing; and helping them stay connected to the community as well as family and friends.” St Clare Hospice is looking for people who live in Uttlesford District, Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth, Harlow and Epping Forest, to become a Compassionate Neighbour.
St Clare Compassionate Neighbours Project Manager Stacey Towler with the first cohort of Compassionate Neighbours
Compassionate Neighbours will be provided with a full training programme, free of charge. The training courses are informal, fun and inspirational, giving volunteers the opportunity to explore how they can use their compassion to help others and give them the confidence to support people in their community. Please note that you must be over 18 to volunteer for this service. St Clare Hospice will carry out a relevant DBS check and you must be willing to give up your time on a regular basis. St Clare Hospice aims to recruit a total of 50 Compassionate Neighbours in the first year of the project. They will be running more training throughout 2018. To find out more about the St Clare Compassionate Neighbours project, including how to become a volunteer and how to refer a person who could benefit from the project, contact the Compassionate Neighbours Project Manager, Stacey Towler, on 01279 773279 or visit stclarehospice.org.uk/care/ compassionate-neighbours/

sign the whole family up for st clare’s go bright walk This summer West Essex and East Herts charity, St Clare Hospice, is holding their firstever family-friendly 5k fundraising event – the Go Bright Walk. The inaugural Go Bright Walk will be taking place in the Water Gardens, Harlow, on Saturday 14th July 2018 and features a family 5k fun run or walk around the town, plus a festival of stalls, games and treats at The Watergardens. Event organisers aim to raise more than £15,000 to fund the charity’s vital care and hope to recruit more than 500 walkers to join the ‘brightest 5k in town’. The event organiser, St Clare’s Challenges and Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, said: “Our first-ever Go Bright Walk promises to be the brightest 5k in town! It is the perfect event to kick-start your summer with the whole family. Setting off at 11am, and with a free family festival of stalls, games and treats taking place all day, there is something for everyone to enjoy.” “The lovely, bright St Clare logo is all the colours of the rainbow, and we want to celebrate the brightness and happiness that St Clare brings to the lives of our community. That’s why we are asking all our Go Bright
Walkers to dress in their favourite, brightest and most exciting clothing to represent the brightness of St Clare!” The Go Bright Walk will set off at 11am with a free, family-friendly festival of stalls taking place in the Water Gardens from 10am to 3pm. The 5k route around Harlow town is both wheelchair and pushchair friendly, and all children under 16 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Advanced entry costs £12 for adults (over 16 years) and £5 for children (4-15 years) with kids under 3 going free! A family ticket (2 adults, 2 children) costs £30 in advance. On the day entry costs £15 for adults, £7 for children and £40 a family. Entry includes a pair of rainbow sweatbands and a Go Bright medal. You can register online at: www. stclarehospice.org.uk/event/go-bright-walk or by calling the St Clare Events Team, on 01279 773754. Registration forms are also available from the Hospice reception or any of the St Clare shops.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING LEMON AND ALMOND SANDWICH COOKIES 115g unsalted butter, softened 115g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 1 tsp almond extract 1 large egg yolk 200g plain flour, plus extra for dusting Milk, for sealing and glazing 2-3 tbsp good quality lemon curd 2 tbsp flaked almonds
These
Makes 10 Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
delightful crisp and buttery lemon and almond cookies have a tangy layer of lemon curd in the middle.
1.
Place the butter, sugar and almond extract in a mixing bowl and beat with a hand-held electric whisk until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolk then gradually beat in the flour to form a crumbly dough.
2.
Gather the dough with your hands and knead lightly until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes, or until firm.
3.
Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to 2mm thick. Using a 7cm round fluted cookie cutter, stamp out 20 rounds, re-rolling the dough as necessary. Place on the baking sheets and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas mark 5.
4.
Lightly brush around the edge of half the cookie dough rounds with a little milk. Drop ½ tsp of lemon curd in the centre of these rounds. Carefully top with the rest of the cookie dough rounds, gently pressing to seal the edges.
5.
Glaze the tops lightly with milk and sprinkle with the extra caster sugar and flaked almonds. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until pale golden. Leave to cool completely on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. TIP: Replace the lemon curd with jam, marmalade or chocolate hazelnut spread for a change of flavour. Remember the filling will be very hot straight out of the oven, so be sure to leave to cool completely before tucking in!

Fun & leisure
short story
dolphin watching By Jackie Breswter
“It’s a tricky walk down.” Sheila grabbed a clump of seagrass to steady herself. “I feel like a mountain goat.” She had picked up a leaflet for a dolphinwatching boat trip that set off from the harbour, but Royce had turned his nose up. “If we sit on a beach that boat will sail past,” he’d said, parking on the coastal road’s narrow verge. “Whatever they see on the boat, we can see from the shore.” “You’re such a cheap-skate, Royce,” Sheila had snapped crossly. “We’re on holiday for goodness sake!” “I’m not being cheap,” Royce had replied sulkily. “I just thought you’d enjoy it more on a beach.” “I’m sorry.” Sheila backed down when she saw she’d offended him. “It’s a lovely idea.” “Quite right,” Royce had shrugged, “I’m just trying to give you a nice holiday.” With the air not completely cleared between them, Sheila had avoided the slightest complaint while stumbling behind Royce down the two miles of nettle-lined track to the beach. She never said a word when she got a splinter in her bottom from a six-bar gate, and cheerfully skidded on lose shale down the sheer cliff face. After an hour of scraped knees and nettle stings they finally stood on the shoreline. The waves shimmered in the hot sun, and the sand of the little cove was the colour of clotted cream. It was also covered in beach towels. “I’m amazed it’s so popular,” Sheila observed. “It’s so dicey to get to.” “Everyone’s had the same idea,” said Royce. “No point wasting money on pointless boat trips.” They found a rock to perch upon, where they could see the sea over rows of colourful windbreaks. “I can’t believe all these families have made it down here,” Sheila marvelled, “and there are no facilities for miles.”
28
“Yes, it’s very secluded,” Royce said. “Look, they’ve got a double buggy down here.” Sheila was staggered. “And those teenagers have brought body boards.” “Incredible,” Royce agreed, peering through his binoculars. Sheila looked around. There were families building sandcastles, some eating ice lollies, some leaning over rock pools with crab lines. “Where’s everyone getting their lollies from?” “Must have brought them with them,” Royce said, feigning interest in a seagull. A girl walked by licking a cornet. “Excuse me!” Sheila called, “Where did you get that from?” “The ice cream van in the car park” the girl said. “What car park?” The girl looked at Sheila as though she’d landed from Mars. “Up there,” she pointed, “it’s a two minute walk.” “Why did we park miles away, Royce?” Sheila turned to her husband. “There’s a car park.” “Look, here comes the dolphin-spotting boat.” Royce said, pretending not to hear. “How much does the car park cost?” Sheila asked. “It’s quite dear,” Royce said. “How much?” Sheila insisted. “Three pounds,” Royce mumbled. “Well, you know what you can do?” Sheila said. “You can go back up the cliff and bring the car round.” She took the binoculars out of his hand. “And then get me an ice-cream. I’ll let you know if I see any dolphins.”

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING ROAST SALMON WITH TOMATO & ASPARAGUS TAGLIATELLE 4 x 175g pieces salmon fillet Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp olive oil 250g cherry tomatoes 2 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced
This

150g asparagus tips
in the kitchen. If you prefer, replace
1 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley
the salmon with pieces of cod loin or
Lemon wedges to serve
smoked haddock fillets.
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Place the salmon on a lightly oiled shallow roasting tin. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and drizzle over the lemon juice. 2. Place the cherry tomatoes in a bowl and add half of the oil and the garlic. Toss gently to coat. Place in the roasting tin around the salmon. Roast for 12-15 minutes until the salmon is just cooked through and the tomatoes have softened. 3. Meanwhile cook the tagliatelle in a pan of lightly salted boiling water for 8-10 minutes or according to the packet instructions. Add the asparagus tips to the pan for the final 3 minutes. Drain well. Return to the pan. 4. Add the roast cherry tomatoes and the remaining olive oil to the tagliatelle and asparagus and toss together. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Divide the pasta between four warmed plates. Top with the roasted salmon, sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve with the lemon wedges. TIP: You can use any long thin pasta for this dish; spaghetti or linguine would work just as well. If you use fresh pasta the cooking time will be reduced – just follow the instructions on the pack.
