ADVERTISING FEATURE
A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear CM17 Residents, I hope you’ve been enjoying the sunshine in Harlow! I thought I’d update you on some campaigns I’ve been working hard on this summer... In July, the Government announced £20 billion in extra funding for the NHS. I seriously welcome that investment, especially if some of it goes towards Harlow’s new hospital (more on that later). What I was horrified to read, just after the announcement, was that the Prime Minister was considering raising fuel duty to pay for the NHS increase. I have successfully campaigned to keep fuel duty down since 2010, saving Harlow drivers hundreds of pounds a year. A tax on motorists doesn’t just affect petrol-heads, but struggling families, and businesses with bigger transportation costs and bus prices. What’s more is that the Treasury itself has said in 2014 that the benefits of the fuel duty freeze have offset the loss in tax income. As I indicated above, I support the new funds for the NHS, but I am not sure that increasing tax on workers is the right way to go about it. If we really want to raise extra cash for the NHS, why not look at some sacred cows, like the Overseas Aid Budget, for example? I’ll continue to campaign to keep fuel duty down in the run up to the Budget this Autumn. In Harlow in 2016, a beautiful little girl, Summer Grant, tragically lost her life when a bouncy castle she was playing on blew away. At the beginning of July, there was another horrific fatality from an inflatable in Great Yarmouth.
I have also been contacted by other parents around the country whose children have been injured in similar circumstances. Given that bouncy castles can be bought for just a few hundred pounds on eBay and many inflatables are not properly regulated, would a review of the regulations on bouncy castles and inflatables and a temporary ban in the interim - be a good idea? I’m not a killjoy, I promise, and I don’t want to ruin children’s fun over summer, but we need to make sure this equipment is safe. Finally, earlier this summer, I celebrated the 70th birthday of the NHS in Harlow. Our NHS staff work so hard every day to deliver exceptional healthcare to individuals requiring vital care I’d like to thank every doctor, nurse, porter and cleaner who makes this service what it is and for their extraordinary work. With this in mind, I’ve been working hard to get the capital funding that Harlow needs to develop a new hospital health campus. The Government is due to make a decision on new hospital funding this Autumn and I’ll continue to campaign hard, so that healthcare in Harlow is fit for the next 70 years. Best wishes, Robert

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Meander around Maldon Another coastal walk for long summer days. Turn right out of Mrs Salisbury’s, right again down Market Hill, and follow the road over the Chelmer Estuary. Keep on along The Causeway and eventually turn right into Bates Road and follow it to the end (there is an overgrown path running parallel). At the fence, turn left and then right onto the path and keep going in the same direction. At Heybridge Creek, turn left along bank and right along path beside water. Continue on the main path and follow it all the way around the Heybridge Basin with great views right across Maldon. Finally, reaching the Heybridge Sea Lock, cross the lock gates and turn left beside channel, with water on left. Follow path ahead for a couple of miles under three roads. Look out for Tesco’s across the water and turn left over the bridge nearby. Keep straight on tarmac path and turn left along Chelmer estuary. Turn right after the Sunny Sailor and return up Market Hill to Maldon’s High Street.

pah: dolphin ward BENEFITS FROM YOUR GENEROSITY Back in June local parents, Stuart and Tracey Halliday, posted on local Facebook Group “Join if you live in Church Langley” asking for donations of preloved or new toys for the children’ areas at PAH - play rooms, toy boxes, reading corners, garden etc. They were overwhelmed by the response and Tracey wrote, “I would just like to say a big thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who donated toys, books, dressing up clothes, teddy’s, garden items, arts and crafts, the list goes on and on. Helping us to raise donations for the Dolphin children’s ward at The Princess Alexander Hospital.” “My garden was full to the brim with so many gorgeous items! The PAH team were delighted and very, very grateful. Here are a few pictures of the generosity given from you guys to the children on the Dolphin ward! Thank you xxx “ Stuart and Tracey’s children, Sebastian and Sienna, were also involved sorting the toys and delivering them to the hospital. Tracey spends a lot of her spare time visiting the ward and is now hoping to collect prams, pushchairs and any baby toys, as they are desperately needed. If you can help, please get in touch with Lorraine at CM17 who will pass details on to Tracey.

royal british legion COMMEMORATIVE MURALS
In October 2017 Valerie Fitz-John made a proposal to the Harlow branch of the Royal British Legion, suggesting that their large external storage containers could form the perfect ‘canvasses’ for painted murals. Her inspired idea was to pay homage and to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the end of WWI. Valerie’s creative friend Angela Spencer volunteered to help with the designs and painting of the three containers and to carry out the research of relevant imagery (such as historically correct uniforms and equipment) at the Imperial War Museum, London. In April of this year, painting commenced and between the two artists, who had never attempted anything on this scale before, they split the tasks of depicting barbed wire, soldiers, small planes, ships, smoke,
explosions and mud. Much painting and re-painting took place until the two were satisfied that they had represented an appropriate depiction of ‘the war to end all wars’. The landscape was tweaked to include small images of men on the skyline and the impression of bomb damage. Angela included in the imagery 100 painted poppies, one for each year, to remember all those who had died in the conflict and in all conflicts since. She also painted the large aircraft, ships and tanks. Valerie painted the small aircraft, the features such as mud, barbed wire, and much of the all important background settings. Valerie and Angela received many complements when they were carrying out this artwork, from RBL members who would often come and talk to them about their fathers’ and grandfathers’ experiences during both world wars. These astonishingly powerful murals are there for all to view, in the grounds of the Royal British Legion. Everyone is welcome.

Parndon Mill exhibition
A YEAR TO REFLECT
Carved French limestone, polycromed wood, oils on canvas and mixed media by ANTHONY LYSYCIA. The works in this exhibition were completed by Anthony Lysycia during a creative gap year in rural France. Anthony & his partner Amanda, who is a painter/designer, decided they wanted a drastic change from the hustle and bustle of life in London which they have called home for many years. They found a suitable house and studio in France and relocated for a year. Expecting to paint a series of landscapes, Anthony was surprised to find himself working on a selection of old floorboards. He also discovered a nearby quarry with beautiful French limestone to carve. What followed was a journey of new creativity. The change of the seasons from November to the following October, the abundance of wildlife and the incredibly slow pace of life was very conducive to a new body of work. He returned to his London studio suitably refreshed and ready for London life. This exhibition is reflection on his year away. Travelling with his watercolour paper and sketchbooks in new environments gives Anthony the fresh approach to his work that he thrives on. All his watercolours are done on location never repainting them back in the studio. The large oil canvases in this exhibition are the next development from his watercolours and polychromed wooden panels.

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP outdoor cushions: are yours completely weatherproof? By Stephen Baldwin, Owner, Material Life Limited
Increasingly our gardens and outdoor spaces are being given the same design-focused attention as our home interiors, essentially becoming an integral part of our overall day-to-day living experience. We are inspired by design magazines and television shows as to how to create an outdoor space, that from an aesthetic perspective, beautifully complements our cosy, contemporary interior dining, living and family areas, as well as offering a peaceful haven, somewhere in which to unwind and relax at the end of a demanding day. To help us furnish these outdoor spaces, there are now a great variety of furniture options; from traditional, high quality wooden tables and chairs to more exotic, fully upholstered, rattan modular seating systems, to more contemporary steel and acrylic loungers and steamer chairs. The cushions provided with this furniture are generally rated as ‘showerproof’ or ‘seasonproof’, but not actually weatherproof! You are still required to bring the cushions indoors when the weather is wet and, of course, store them over the winter months, which can often create problems, especially when space is limited in a flat or small apartment for example, where you may want to furnish a balcony or roof-terrace, but have nowhere to store the cushions. How to deal with this?
year without degrading or decomposing and not fade after extended exposure to direct sunlight. This luxury range of cushions, in various styles and sizes, are available for dining chairs, deck and steamer chairs, benches and sun loungers. They come in a selection of four standard colours: Sherwood Green, Marine Blue, Stone Grey and Sand Beige and are hand crafted to order, by a highly qualified, in-house production team based in Hampshire, giving you a quality, British made, item. Because they are produced exclusively for Material Life Ltd., we are able to offer you the best possible price, together with free delivery. Harlow Chorus “Mission accomplished”
Words by Mick Rumens
Our concert on 14th July at All Saints church Bishops Stortford was extremely well received by our audience who were leaving with many complementary comments for our performance. Our musical director, Edward, was very pleased with the response to all the hard work that he had put in with us and all the chorus were appreciative of the support of our excellent soloists and the orchestra. Now we can all have a welcome summer break to prepare for next season commencing on Monday 3rd September. Our next season of concerts will begin with Sir Karl Jenkins “The Armed Man’ on Remembrance Day 11th November for which more information will be available in September’s edition. This will be followed by Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in December. We will have a new rehearsal accompanist joining us in September,. Twenty-three year old Gary Beecher, who was born and raised in Ireland where he began his music career winning many prestigious awards. He us now based in London where he has complemented his studies with masterclasses from many distinguished pianists. He has
performed many solo recitals in Ireland the UK and on the continent. He impressed us all with his very professional, competent and friendly conduct in his audition at our rehearsal. He will surely be another great asset to the chorus. Our musical director gave us a rough outline of his plans for the next couple of seasons and he is planning that our concert in July next year will be a ‘lighter’ programme to appeal to our younger audiences. It will be composed of choral works from well know and popular film scores. He has promised us many new challenges to whet our appetites, and to help us to achieve the highest standards in choral expertise. However, none of this is for free, and as a charitable organisation we are very dependent on all the support which we can receive. Whether that is our supporters coming along to our concerts and buying tickets, to new singers who with to join us in these exciting endeavours or, if we should be so lucky, a person or company is prepared to offer some sponsorship, even if only for one concert.
I look forward to seeing many of you next season. Next Session Begins 11th November 2018

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: savoury
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING CRAB PARCELS
1 x 230g can crab meat, drained and flaked 1 tsp grated fresh root ginger 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander 2 spring onions, finely chopped 1 tbsp lime juice Freshly-ground black pepper 8-10 sheets of filo pastry (see Tip) Vegetable oil for deep frying 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce Shredded spring onion, to garnish
These
crisp filo pastry parcels with a
crab and ginger filling make a tasty seafood starter for a special dinner or can be served as nibbles with refreshing drinks on a hot summer’s evening.
1. Mix the crab meat, ginger, coriander, chopped spring onions and lime juice in a bowl. Season lightly with freshly-ground black pepper. 2. Cut the sheets of filo pastry into twenty 15cm squares. Take one square and brush lightly with water then top with a second pastry square. Place a spoonful of the crab mixture in the centre of the square. Brush the edges lightly with water and gather them together to enclose the filling and form a moneybag-shaped parcel. 3. Repeat with the rest of the pastry squares and filling to make 10 parcels in total. Half fill a large deep pan with vegetable oil and heat until a small piece of filo pastry dropped in the hot fat sizzles and browns in 20 seconds. Deep fry the parcels, in 2-3 batches, for 2-3 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 4. Serve warm with sweet chilli sauce for dipping and garnished with shredded spring onion. TIP: Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so you may need a few more if they are small. Keep the squares covered with a clean damp cloth or kitchen paper when filling, to prevent the pastry drying and tearing.

The Henry Moore Primary School Goodbye Year 6! At The Henry Moore School, Year 6 have had an action packed summer. After all their hard work for their SATs, the children have taken part in many adventurous trips and activities. They have been visited by Lego Workshop, toured the Harry Potter Studios, stayed overnight at Thriftwood and had a day out at the beach at Walton-on-the-Naze. We are so proud of everything they have achieved this year and wish them the best of luck at their new secondary schools. They have also done extremely well in their SATs - congratulations!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING BERRY & CHOCOLATE PAVLOVAS 4 large egg whites 225g caster sugar 1 tsp cornflour 1tsp white wine vinegar 1 tsp vanilla extract 500g fresh strawberries 200g fresh raspberries 25g icing sugar, sifted, plus extra to serve 2 tsp lemon juice 300ml double cream, softly whipped 200g Greek yoghurt Chocolate curls, to decorate Makes 4, Ready in 2 Hours
These
divine individual pavlovas are ideal for a summer dessert. You can make the meringues in advance then layer with fruit and cream a couple of hours before serving.
1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130C, Gas Mark 1. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Draw six 9 cm circles on each sheet of baking paper. Turn the paper over. 2. Using an electric food mixer whisk the egg whites in a clean grease-free bowl until stiff. Gradually whisk in the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, whisking well after each addition to make a firm and glossy meringue. 3. Blend the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla extract together in a small bowl and fold into the meringue. Divide the meringue between the marked circles. 4. Bake for 45 minutes - 1 hour until the meringues are crisp and dry on the outside. Turn the oven off and leave them to cool completely in the oven with the door slightly open. 5. Hull and chop most of the strawberries (reserving about 8 for decoration). Place in a food processor or blender with half the raspberries and pulse to make a thick puree. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the icing sugar and lemon juice. Fold the yogurt into the cream. 6. Carefully remove the meringues from the baking paper. Sandwich the meringues together in stacks of three with cream and the fruit puree. Top with the reserved strawberries and remaining raspberries and decorate with chocolate curls. Dust with icing sugar just before serving. TIP: The unfilled meringues will keep in a an airtight container for 3-4 days.

st james’ church scarecrow Festival On the weekend of 8 and 9 September High Wych will hold its third scarecrow festival. Last year the organisers were overwhelmed by the kindness, enthusiasm and inventiveness of the residents. It was an enormous village effort not only benefiting the upkeep of our village church but also showing a strong local community spirit. Visitors were overheard commenting “so much talent” and “what a lovely place to live.” Apart from the scarecrows the village was decorated with wellington boots filled with flowers positioned along High Wych Road and down High Wych Lane up to the Manor of Groves. These were placed on the Monday prior to the scarecrows being put in place. This year instead of wellingtons sixty large flowers will be placed along the same stretches of road. The flowers will be some four feet in diameter with a hub cap at its centre. Volunteers are already hard at work constructing these. Anyone is welcome to make a scarecrow for September. It can be a character made out of straw or different materials if you prefer. There is no entry form but if you are in doubt at what should do you could ring Janet Bellingham on 01279 724247 or 07882743627. If there is no answer the organisers want you to leave a message explaining where your scarecrow will be. Ideally they need to be in place on Thursday Sept 6th and removed by Tuesday 11th September. If you are stuck for ideas, look on
Ian the Postman from last years festival
“Pinterest” or google “Scarecrow Festivals” as there are some amazing ideas. Hopefully the weather will once again be kind. Once again St. James’s Church Yard will be the centre of activities with stalls from a number of local organisations, snacks, drinks and of course plenty more scarecrows. As before there will be a competition for the best scarecrow with local postman Ian being the main judge. This time however Ian will be aided by a public vote. High Wych looks forwards to another great weekend.
When: Sat 8th & sun 9th September Info: Janet Bellingham on 01279 724 247 or 07882 743 627
