A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear CM17 Readers, I hope you’ve been enjoying sunny Harlow this summer - it was certainly a scorcher. I’m now back in Westminster to continue working hard for Harlow. Like the beginning of a new academic year at school or college, September also kick-starts another term in Parliament. After a refreshing break in Harlow, I’m more ready than ever to campaign for the funding we need for a new hospital and keep the pressure on the Government to keep fuel duty down. You may well have heard about the recent changes to Blue Badge rules. In July, the government announced that people with hidden disabilities, including autism, will soon have access to Blue Badges. I campaigned hard on this issue with Pact for Autism, the amazing Harlow-based charity - we even held meetings with the previous Disabilities Minister to raise the issue. I’m really pleased that, after all the hard work, the barriers so many face when travelling will be removed. If you’re a regular CM17 reader, you may have read my previous updates on new hospital funding announcements. The government decision on capital funding is expected in Autumn 2018. At the time of writing, I’m yet to receive the news. However, the hospital leadership team have been working hard to put together a case for a new hospital health campus in Harlow and I’ve been campaigning in Parliament for the same. We’ve spoken to Ministers and got the support of seven local MPs. If Harlow gets the funding it needs for a new hospital health campus, then great - the

infrastructure will be revolutionised and Harlow will become a hub for healthcare education in the East of England! If not, I shall continue to work with the hospital and lobby the Government to bring healthcare in Harlow into the 21st Century. The next Autumn Budget will take place in a couple of months time. This is where the Government sets out its spending plan for the year and big funding announcements are made. Since 2010, I have campaigned hard to keep fuel duty down, saving drivers in Harlow, and across the country, hundreds of pounds a year. Fuel duty affects every corner of the economy, and families and businesses alike. Every year, we put the pressure back on the Government to keep fuel duty frozen. I’ll keep campaigning hard on this to keep travel costs down for hardworking families and businesses. As ever, keep up to date with Harlow news and my campaigns on social media: Facebook @ RobertHalfon and Twitter @Halfon4HarlowMP. If there’s anything I can do to help, you can contact me via halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com. I’ll be in touch again next month. Best wishes, Robert

IT’s your community

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice help make a difference in your community St Clare Hospice is looking for caring people who are keen to help others and make a real difference to local people. There are lots of ways to get involved, but in particular we are seeking: Drivers - many of our patients have no means of getting to the hospice in Hastingwood (near Harlow) to access our beneficial services, so you could help by giving a lift to people from your local area. You just need your own car and a bit of time in the week. Compassionate Neighbours provide companionship to people living locally who are coping with illness or old age. With just an hour a week you can help someone who is lonely just by popping in for a cup of tea and a chat, or by helping them to access activities in their local community. Shop assistants - our charity shops are treasure troves of fantastic new and pre-loved items. They are a hub of activity and we couldn’t run them with our volunteers. They are a great place to meet new people and discover new skills and experiences.

Street collections - it costs over £4 million each year to provide our vital services, and with limited NHS funding we need to fundraise for most of this. Just an hour of your time once or twice a year, to encourage donations from passers-by, really can make such a huge difference to our cause. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and your time will help us to continue to be there for local families when they need us most. If you are interested please contact Rob Wallace, Voluntary Services Manager on 01279 773722 or email: volunteer@stclarehospice.org. uk Or you can find more information about all our roles on our website: www.stclarehospice. org.uk/volunteer

gibberd gallery exhibition

SHOW WOMEN A new exhibition opened at The Gibberd Gallery on Thursday 9th August, running until Saturday 27th October. Show Women brings together painting, sculpture, film and installation by contemporary women and non-binary artists to celebrate 100 years since 40% of women in the UK got the vote. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Gibberd Gallery and two of the UK’s most significant collections of British art: the Jerwood Collection and the Ingram Collection. Exhibiting artists range from the emerging to the established and include painter Rose Wylie, BP Portrait Award winner Aleah Chapin, Victoria Sin, and Nicola Bealing. Loaned work from both collections will be on display alongside a special interpretation of the Sir Frederick Gibberd 20th Century Watercolour collection which highlights the work of pioneering women artists within it. The gallery has programmed a series of events on feminism and gender politics in art to run throughout the duration of the exhibition.

About the Gibberd Gallery: The Gibberd Gallery is a space run by Harlow Art Trust which hosts an annual programme of exhibitions, talks and events that includes group and solo shows by established and emerging artists. Follow us on twitter, facebook and instagram.

GROUP COORDINATOR REQUIRED - COULD THAT BE YOU? We are looking to recruit a Group Coordinator to the East Herts & West Essex Group. We currently have a team of friendly and active volunteers who are working to provide exercise, support and social opportunities to people affected by MS in the local area.

We tend to meet as a team on a monthly basis and keep in touch via phone and email as and when is needed. The current group volunteers are active throughout the year, our volunteering roles are flexible and open to sharing and we aim to fit in with each other wherever possible.

We’re at a really exciting time in the group where we are looking at our longer term plans for activities and fundraising, as well as the opportunity to reach out to new groups of people. The group is in a strong financial position due to legacies received in recent years hence we need to develop spending plans for the coming years. We are looking for a Group Coordinator to join the team and to get involved with developing the group in different ways and would love to hear from someone with fresh ideas and a willingness to work with the existing team to maximise the group’s potential.

This is a great opportunity to get involved with a national charity at a local level. We are looking for someone friendly and organised with good communication skills and a willingness to represent the MS Society in the local area on behalf of the group. An excellent team player, we’re looking forward to working with someone who can get involved in the group and support other volunteers, as well as working closely with MS Society local staff.

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice scorching firewalk fundraiser Calling all courageous soles...are you brave enough to conquer the coals for St Clare Hospice? Following the success of their 2017 Firewalk, in which more than forty fierce fire-walkers raised over £10,000 for the Hospice, the Hastingwoodbased charity will be hosting another scorching event on Sunday 28th October at the hospice itself. St Clare supporters will be lining up to walk barefoot over red-hot wood embers, smouldering at over 800 degrees Fahrenheit, to raise vital funds for the charity. Amongst last year’s brave participants were two members of the St Clare Hospice Inpatient Unit team: Vanna Poulter the IPU Manager, and Essie Ducat, a nursing assistant. Essie Ducat said: “I’ve never done anything like this before and was nervous about it, but I absolutely loved it. I just kept thinking of all the patients I have cared for, and knew that I was making a difference to so many families by raising vital funds. It was such a thrill to cross the coals and gave me a real buzz – I encourage everyone to try it!” St Clare Challenge and Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, said: “Are you worried about being troubled by chilly toes this autumn? Want to warm your feet by the fire? What better way to get toasty than by entering the St Clare Firewalk! Not only will you keep the chill off as the weather turns cooler, you will also help to raise a scorching amount for your local hospice. Help us hit

Parndon Mill exhibition

GLASSHAUS XIII

The highly successful annual glass exhibition is now in its thirteenth year and this time will be focused on the interaction between glass and science. It will show how scientific principles, either physical or chemical, can be exploited in the making process – or how science can directly influence the production, or be the subject of the artwork. Inspired by medical science a series of pieces show the reimagining of what an organic cell is, and how the act of making something that seems familiar show just how alien it may actually appear. There are a number of hereditary diseases that affect the shape of our red blood cells. Four linked pieces by another artist represent these morphologies, responding also to some of the impacts of these diseases. New techniques for integrating the graphic impact of medical scans with the material and optical qualities of glass were developed when an artist became fascinated by how making, particularly in glass, can crystallise and communicate powerful ideas.

apply fanciful glass decoration to syringes. Another artist exhibits his version of retorts.

Several artists have been involved in the science of glass making to create their art. For instance the reactions that occur when metals such as copper and steel are exposed to increased temperatures and molten soda glass. The exposure to such high temperatures changes both metals from the familiar to the unrecognisable. A technique called Boiling Glass incorporates air pockets in the glass construction and when the fusing temperature is increased, a physical reaction takes place within the glass where the air rises to the surface, dragging the colours of the piece with it. The research for a PhD by one artist was the application of digital design and 3D printing for glass casting, for another the study of colour in glass.

The work of two other artists relates the extreme forces of black holes in the universe. Another has made a wall piece based on the radar system used to ensure the safe running of the aeroplanes around the world.

Science is a vast subject, but glass making can encompass a large array of techniques and results too, also showing imagination and innovation. Many can be seen in this exhibition which is interesting as well as enjoyable

The science laboratory has inspired one of the regular exhibitors at Glasshaus to

heritage open days A CHANCE TO EXPLORE In 1991, the Council of Europe and the European Commission set up European Heritage Days to encourage the appreciation and protection of Europe’s diverse cultural assets. They wanted to throw open the doors to historic monuments and buildings, particularly those normally closed to the public. Today, Heritage Open Days are held in September in 50 countries. England’s Heritage Open Days have grown into England’s largest heritage festival, with over 5,000 events held annually, including exclusive openings and family-friendly activities. This year, for the first time, the festival will take place on two consecutive weekends. It will also mark the centenary of the Universal Suffrage Act with ‘Extraordinary Women’ events, celebrating wellknown and lesser-known remarkable women. To find a suitable event or open day near you, visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk.

Do you fancy visiting somewhere exclusive – somewhere normally closed to the public, even on Heritage Days? Then you’re in luck. Places open exclusively this year are: THE BANQUETING HOUSE, GATESHEAD: an 18th century Gothic folly

when:

offering a stunning view of the Derwent Valley, open 10am - 4pm on 8th and 9th September. THE NUCLEAR BUNKER, WHITSTABLE: climb down the 15ft vertical ladder to learn more about this bunker, built in 1966 to

monitor possible Cold War attacks, open 12pm - 3pm on 15th September. THE WAVERTREE LOCK-UP, LIVERPOOL: a jail built in 1796, since used to isolate cholera victims and house destitute Irish families, open 12pm - 4pm on 9th September.

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Place the peppers and garlic in a shallow roasting tin and drizzle over half the olive oil. Roast in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until just tender. 2. Unroll the pastry sheet onto a large baking sheet lined with baking paper. Arrange the tomatoes over the pastry, leaving a 2cm border, and scatter over the thyme leaves. Top with the crumbled feta and ruffles of Parma ham. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. 3. Gently fold in the pastry edges a little to give a raised border. Brush the pastry border with beaten egg. 4. Bake the flan for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden and the peppers are lightly charred in places. Serve warm or cold garnished with the extra thyme leaves. TIPs: You can use any other variety of continental ham for this flan, or try thin slices of salami or pastrami instead. Remove the packet of pastry from the fridge about 20 minutes before unrolling to allow it to soften a little.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING DOUGHNUTS 175ml milk 25g butter 350g strong plain flour, plus extra for dusting and kneading ½ tsp salt 1½ tsp easy-blend dried yeast 75g caster sugar 1 medium egg, beaten

Home-made

Vegetable oil for deep frying Chocolate sauce, warmed, for dipping (optional) Makes 16, Ready in 1 Hours (plus Proving)

doughnuts are easier to make than you may think! Serve warm rolled in sugar with chocolate sauce to dip for an extra-special sweet treat. They are best eaten on the day of making.

1. Place the milk and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Cool for 5 minutes. 2. Sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, yeast and 25g of the caster sugar. Pour in the milk mixture and beaten egg and mix to a soft dough. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-6 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding a little more flour if needed. 3. Place the dough in a bowl, cover and leave in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. 4. Knock back the dough and divide and shape into 16 balls. Place, well spaced, on the baking sheets and cover with lightly oiled cling film. Leave in a warm place for 15-20 minutes until puffy. 5. Half fill a large deep pan with vegetable oil and heat to 180°C/350°F, or until a cube of bread dropped in the hot fat browns in 30 seconds. Fry the doughnuts, 4-5 at a time, for 1-2 minutes on each side or until puffed and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 6. Spread the rest of the sugar on a flat plate and roll each hot doughnut in the sugar to coat. Serve warm with chocolate sauce to dip. TIP: For jam-filled doughnuts, place 3tbsp raspberry jam in a piping bag fitted with

a plain nozzle. Insert the tip of a knife into each doughnut and twist to make a hole. Push the tip of the nozzle in the hole and pipe about 1tsp of jam into each doughnut. 32

The Henry Moore Primary School ‘Sing Up’ Day 2018 This year’s ‘Sing Up’ Day was packed with musical fun! The children (and teachers) fully embraced dressing up in the style of many different genres – the costumes were incredible! We enjoyed a group performance at the beginning of the day, where we saw Reception rock the stage, Year 1 bring the West End to Henry Moore and Year 2 fully embrace their inner rap stars. Year 3 performed a groovy number, while Year 4 took on the iconic Bob Marley, representing reggae, learning Makaton to accompany their performance. Year 5 were ‘Working 9 to 5’ in their ‘Country’ genre and Year 6 were ‘Still Standing’ after SATs, with a little help from Elton John. The rest of the day continued to delve into all things music, taking part in ‘name that tune’ quizzes and making posters about each genre… as well as more singing, of course! We had a fantastic day and cannot wait for next year already!
