A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Readers, What a start to the new term here in Westminster! I kicked off September by paying a visit to the Prime Minister’s front door. Alongside FairFuelUK, a campaign group for motorists, and two charities, CLIC Sargent, which supports children with cancer, and Headway, which looks after those with head injuries, I presented a petition at 10 Downing Street, to scrap hospital car parking charges in England. Why scrap hospital car parking fees? I believe that they are a stealth tax on the sick, the vulnerable, on families and on our hard-working NHS employees. CLIC Sargent’s Cancer Costs research shows families visiting their children undergoing cancer treatments spend between £44 and £37 on average on hospital parking. Headway has supported families spending more than £1,500 in parking fees in just 15 weeks! If you agree that this must change, please sign my online petition today at: www.petition.parliament. uk/petitions/219650 and let’s help change millions of lives! As Chair of the Education Select Committee, I have also been discussing our most recent report on alternative provision and the everincreasing number of exclusions in schools. My passion is helping young people climb the ladder of opportunity, but I am concerned that too many children are being excluded and then left abandoned to a forgotten part of our education system. Many of these children already face a host of personal challenges, with children in care or poverty and those with special educational needs, being far more likely to end up in alternative provision. They deserve the best possible
support but, at present, they just aren’t getting it. The report sheds light on the need for reform and urges the Government to take on board the Committee’s practical recommendations for more effective alternative provision. Finally, this month, I hosted my 7th annual Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair in Harlow. The day was a roaring success, with job seekers and students from all across Essex turning up to learn about what Harlow has to offer. Nearly 60 local, national and international companies and charities were showcasing their opportunities. Among them, were Pearsons, Greene King, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Barclays, Asda and the British Army quite a variety! I want to say a huge thank you to all the exhibitors for giving up their time and to everyone that attended on the day - it was so great to chat to you all and I hope that many of you will go on to secure new jobs in Harlow! As ever, you can continue to follow my news and campaigns on social media: Facebook @ RobertHalfon and Twitter @Halfon4HarlowMP or send me an email at: halfon4harlow@roberthalfon. com. I’ll be in touch again next month. Best wishes, Robert

I was born in Harlow Hospital, grew up in Sawbridgeworth and lived most of my adult life in London. I moved back four and a half years ago. What’s your favourite shop? Dorringtons. It reminds me of my childhood, I also like the fact it has been a family business for nearly one hundred years. What’s your favourite Venue? Spurriers House Cafe in the town park. I love to walk there at the weekend, have breakfast and walk home again. What do you like best about Harlow? The layout of the town, with its green spaces, woods and hidden spaces. I also love all the sculpture and public art. What do you like doing when you’re not working?

I like to run, the cycle paths which were the old lanes before the new town was built still feel like country lanes and are very peaceful to run along. I set up my business because... I have worked in psychological therapies in the NHS for 21 years. A couple of years ago I decided to go part time and felt that the time was right to set up my own practice. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? I get a lot of rewarding moments in my job, where I see people who arrived depressed or anxious gradually change over the weeks and start to get more out of their lives. What’s your favourite one liner? “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.” Eleanor Roosevelt.
Are you stressed, depressed or anxious? Is your old way of doing things no longer working for you? Is it me to make posive changes in your life? st mark’s school
St Mark’s celebrates the best results in Harlow 2018 Another excellent set of results that give St Mark’s the best performances against all of the key achievement measures within Harlow. Headteacher, Elaine Heaphy, commenting on the results, stated, ‘Achievements such as these are born out of a culture of hard work and success. I would like to congratulate all our pupils and staff who worked so hard to achieve their great results.
We insist on the highest standards of behaviour, uniform, attitude to learning and respect for one another and the environment. By providing a traditional, yet broad and balanced curriculum for all our pupils, we are able to recognise and develop individual talents, interests and successes.’ All are welcome to apply – tours of the school are still available, for Year 7 pupils starting September 2019, by appointment only.
Our most recent Ofsted inspection (November 2017) noted our school as “a highly inclusive school, where there are high expectations of what all pupils can achieve regardless of their background, race or religion.” Our pupils take tremendous pride in their school community and their learning. St Mark’s is a school where success is achieved within a nurturing community, which provides structure, support, celebrates success and recognises the unique talents of young people as individuals. Pupils receive the very highest quality education, personalised to meet their individual needs, strengths and interests, so that they leave with the foundations for a successful life.

Local charity catnip cat rescue Catnip Cat Rescue was formed in April 2018 by a group of five volunteers who are passionate and committed cat lovers, with many years of knowledge and experience between them in all aspects of cat rescue and welfare. Harlow and its surrounding area have a very large cat population and we have always been very concerned that there are not enough cat charities in the area to benefit the public and assist the number of cats and kittens in need. Catnip Cat Rescue are here to assist in all areas of cat welfare. Being a new organisation we do have limited space and availability to take cats into foster care, but we will do our very best to help at all times. We aim to promote and assist the welfare and care of cats in the local community, seek permanent homes for abandoned and unwanted cats and encourage neutering, microchipping and vaccination to prevent escalation of the local cat population. We are registered with HMRC after submitting our Small Charity Constitution and have been granted approval as a wholly non-profit organisation and are fully operational in managing our own, albeit small cat rescue and rehoming operation, with the help of our wonderful volunteers and home fosterers. Our Mission Statement: “All cats to be given a life filled with love, kindness and to help them find forever homes” We rely totally on donations and fundraising events to raise money for the cats in our care and our first two events, a quiz night held in April and our ‘Paws
For Tea’ summer garden party in June, proved hugely successful and thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended. We do have more events coming up in 2018 so please like us on Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/CatnipCatRescueHarlow/ and check our website www.catnipcatrescue.co.uk for updates on these and more. You can also view photos and read about our beautiful cats that are now ready and waiting for their forever homes. Please contact us if you would like information on becoming a member or other ways that you can get involved. We would be grateful for any support to help the many cats and kittens in our area and to help them find their forever homes.

help the Hedgehog
Let’s do what we can... Hedgehogs are in serious decline and could be extinct in urban areas by 2025. They need our help to protect the species so please do what you can to save them. 1. Avoid using pesticides and slug pellets in your garden. Use organic alternatives. 2. Encourage hedgehogs into your garden but don’t take one from the wild as it could be a nursing mother.
injuries. Also be careful with garden netting, make sure it starts 22-30cm off the ground so hedgehogs can get underneath, the same with football type goal nets. Cover open grates or drains so that hedgehogs can’t fall in.
3. If you own a dog please be careful as they have been known to mistake a hedgehog for a ball and can cause serious damage. Cats however tend to ignore hedgehogs. Hedgehog fleas are breed specific and cannot transfer to you or your pets.
8. Check bonfires before light
5. Provide a shallow dish of fresh water and make sure it is not too deep. If you have a pond make sure it is has a gently sloping side or some kind of step so that any hedgehog that falls in can get out again. They are good swimmers but can easily drown if they have no means of escape. A piece of netting secured to the side of the pond could be a lifesaver! 6. Make or buy a hedgehog house. This can either be used for hibernation, or for a mother hog to give birth or you could use it as a feeding station as many of them are designed with tunnels to help make them fox and cat proof. 7. Be extra careful to check your garden before using a strimmer as they can cause horrific

ng.
9. Dispose of litter responsibly. Crush the end of cans before you put them in the bin/recycling box and cut plastic beer can multipack yokes to break the circles as hedgehogs can get their heads trapped and will starve to death.
4. NEVER feed bread and milk instead feed only cat/dog food in jelly, not gravy as this is too salty and choose the poultry or meat based flavours, not fish. Unsweetened muesli moistened with water or specialist dry hedgehog food mix can be left out all winter.
10. If you see a sick or injured hedgehog/ abandoned babies/one that appears to be ‘drunk’/is excessively scratching/or out in the daylight please call the BHPS or Wildlife Aid as soon as possible as time is of the essence. If you see any small hedgehogs in October to February please contact your local rescue and send them a photograph so they can decide if it is large enough to hibernate or if it needs to be taken into foster care. 11. Trust your instincts, if something doesn’t ‘feel’ right then it probably isn’t. 12. If you are in any doubt please call the The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, Wildlife Aid or local charity Herts Hogline, as you might just save a life! RECIPE OF THE MONTH: savoury
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING ONE PAN LEMON AND HERB CHICKEN ROAST
50g butter, softened 2 garlic cloves, crushed 3 tbsp fresh chopped mixed herbs (see Tip) 2 lemons Salt and freshly ground black pepper 8 chicken thigh portions 500g baby potatoes, halved 2 tbsp virgin olive oil 4 sprigs fresh rosemary, broken into small sprigs
A quick and easy roast for midweek or Sunday lunch with hardly any washing up!
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6. Place the butter in a bowl and beat in the garlic, mixed herbs and the zest and 1 tbsp juice from one of the lemons. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. Ease the skin away from the chicken thigh portions and gently push about 1 tsp of the herb and garlic butter under the skin of each portion then smooth the skin back down. Place all the chicken portions in a large roasting tin. 3. Toss the potatoes in half the olive oil and season. Scatter around the chicken along with the rosemary sprigs. Cut the second lemon into thin wedges and nestle them in between then chicken and potatoes. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. 4. Roast in the pre-heated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes until the chicken is golden and cooked though and the potatoes are crisp and tender, turning the potatoes and basting the chicken with the pan juices once or twice. Serve from the roasting tin with steamed green vegetables, if liked.
TIPs: You can use any combination of mixed herbs for the garlic and herb butter – thyme, parsley and oregano all go particularly well with chicken. Or just choose one strongly flavoured herb such as tarragon.

Harlow Chorus The start of a busy new season
Words by Mick Rumens
After a very warm summer break, the Chorus returned to rehearsals on Monday 3rd September full of enthusiasm for the new season. Because of the short break between our November concert and our Christmas performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio we are rehearsing both programmes each Monday evening. Our Remembrance Day concert will be performed on Saturday 10th November at 7.30 pm, the venue being All Saints Church, Hockerill, Bishops Stortford. The programme’s main work will be Sir Karl Jenkins ‘The Armed Man’ which we last performed about five years ago at the Passmores Academy in Harlow. It is a powerful and evocative work, illustration the descent into, and terrible consequences of war. Commissioned by the British Royal Armories and dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo crisis, this work is a contemporary example of a mass based on the 15th-century French song “L’homme arme (The Armed Man)”. Set within the framework of the Christian mass, ‘The Armed Man’ is a major choral work which uses both sacred and secular texts, and is subtitled ‘A Mass for Peace’. This is a wonderful work to perform and I’m sure that Edward will get the very best performance from us.
Karl Jenkins was born on the Gower Peninsular within a mile of our present musical director, Edward-Rhys Harry, with whom he went to school. He draws on a wide range of musical training and experience, and, after classical training at Cardiff University, Wales, and the Royal Academy of Music, London, he worked as a jazz musician with Nucleus and Ronnie Scott among others. He has received commissions from the Royal Ballet, Eisteddfod 2000, BBC Proms in the Park and HRH The Prince of Wales. At his request, our musical director was the conductor of the first ever performance of ‘The Armed Man’ in Russia. Our programme will also include the world premiere performance of a new work composed by our musical director, Edward-Rhys Harry, entitled “Spring Offensive”. This is based upon the poem by Wilfred Owen, a serving soldier in the First World War, believed to have been written after a charge in April 1917. This poem is regarded by many as Wilfred Owen’s finest work. We will be holding an Open Rehearsal on Monday 15th October for those who would like to join us for the experience. All will be welcome from 7.15pm at St john’s ARC in the Old Town. All Saints

The Henry Moore Primary School Sculpture Trail On Wednesday 13th June 2018, Year 5 went to Harlow Town Centre, to embark on a sculpture trail. In 2010, Harlow officially became the world’s first Sculpture Town, partly thanks to the large collection of Henry Moore’s sculptures in the area. The town itself has nearly 100 sculptures on permanent display and 28 of them are in the town centre. We followed the trail, looking at artists, materials and forming opinions of the many different styles we saw. After a sunny picnic lunch in the Water Gardens, we focused on the sculptures in that area and sketched as many as we could. On our return to school we planned our own sculptures to be made from plaster of Paris and created our own sculpture trail maps, annotated with information and sketches. It was a fantastic local trip and really opened our eyes to our local community
