A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Readers, This month, I’ve been working hard to tackle antisocial behaviour right across Harlow. We all want Harlow and the Villages to remain a happy, safe and friendly environment to live, work and grow up in, but petty crimes are really threatening our community spirit. Together with the help of the Old Harlow Councillors, we’ve been looking at how best to combat anti-social behaviour in the area and come up with a targeted solution. I’ve also been calling on the Chief Fire and Crime Commissioner at Essex Police for more police presence in the town centre. We’ve been assured that we will have 150 more officers to increase visibility on our streets. It’s so important to me to hear your views about anti-social behaviour. That’s why, in the coming months, I’ll be meeting with local shopkeepers around the Market Square, where business owners have expressed concerns about anti-social behaviour. I am very hopeful that, together with more police and the brilliant work carried out by Harlow’s anti-social behaviour team, we can make Harlow town centre a safer place. Cutting the cost of living is always a priority. I’ve been campaigning hard to keep fuel duty down at the petrol pumps for motorists and I’m delighted that Theresa May has announced a freeze for the ninth year in a row. As well as saving motorists money at the pumps, I’m also working hard to save households money on their energy costs and I’ve campaigned to cap energy bills for the most vulnerable. The Big Six energy providers make over £1.4 billion every year from unnecessarily high tariffs. Meanwhile, hardworking residents in Harlow are under ever increasing financial pressure and it’s the vulnerable
and low-income earners that are paying the most! This is not right. And it’s not fair. I am pleased to see that the Prime Minister, Theresa May, has now placed a price cap on energy bills. On education and skills, Harlow has had some great news, this month: Harlow College has been selected as one of twenty-one institutions in England to be a Centre for Excellence for Maths! I work hard to get Government investment into Harlow and this will mean an extra £700,000 for education and skills in our town. This comes on top of the many millions of pounds already spent on Harlow’s Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Centre, the new Harlow Stansted Airport College, our incredible Enterprise Zone and the relocation of Public Health England (with £400 million of Government money). It is clear that Harlow is going to become the educational and skills capital of Essex and the East of England! The next few weeks are looking to be extremely busy, ahead of the Autumn Budget announcement at the end of October. As ever, keep up to date with all my news on my Facebook page (Robert H Halfon), Twitter (@halfon4harlowMP) and Instagram (@halfon4harlowmp). All the best, Robert

policing our local community Essex Community Messaging: Darker nights, turn on some lights! As the autumn nights draw in the tell-tale signs of the empty house become more apparent. FACT: Most burglars will prefer to target the empty house unseen and avoid any confrontation. As the days get shorter if you work away from home, or even pop out to get the children from school by the time you return home it may already be dark. A house in darkness says no one is in especially if your neighbour’s houses either side have lights on and show other signs of being occupied. If you back onto open farmland or have parking areas or footpaths to side or rear this may be even more apparent.
and kitchen. A carefully placed imitation TV or “Fake TV” can further add to that illusion of occupancy by making it look like the television is on. Some burglars may also listen at windows or letterboxes for sign of activity, so consider leaving a radio on within your home. Don’t forget the outside of your property too, if burglars see that it is lit they are less likely to approach for fear of being seen. Leave lights on, with energy efficient bulbs it costs very little now days and yet may save you lots! By Kevin Blake.
Create the “Illusion of Occupancy”, when its dark make your home look like you are in. Leave lights on or put them on timers or daylight sensors to come when it gets dark. Remember though no one lives in the hall or on the landing so if you leave these lights on supplement these with lights on in rooms that you would normally occupy at that time of day i.e. lounge

Newhall Primary academy school & nursery A half term of firsts at newhall We finally opened our doors to children and families on 17th September after spending a week in temporary accommodation with our Reception classes at Mark Hall Sports Centre because the building was not quite ready. We were all impressed with how well the children coped with the unusual setting that they found themselves in and how well they have adapted to the new routines now that we are in the building. The children have explored different stories over the last few weeks, including ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and ‘The Three Little Pigs’. Our learning environments are quickly developing so that they reflect the children’s interests and support their learning journeys. They have turned a corner of our outdoor area into a building site and they even have their own site office to help the three little pigs build their houses! We held our first Harvest Festival at the end of September and were very impressed with all the donations from both the Nursery and Reception children. Reception children sang a Harvest song that they had composed themselves and acted out a short story. The food was then taken to Harlow Food Bank so it can be distributed to families in need. Our Extended School provision is also now open and it is proving popular with the children. At Breakfast Club children are offered a selection of cereals or toast with butter or jam and water or milk. There are then a variety of activities available for the children, including board games, yoga, reading, drawing and construction. Our Extended Schools Lead is a Sports Coach and he sets up

organised group activities for the After-School Club before a warm tea is served. Ashlyns are managing our catering and our Catering Manager provides snacks and meals for the Nursery, as well as a hot lunch and tea for our After-School Club. The children have now become used to collecting their own lunch and choosing salad from the salad bar. The first couple of days were a bit tricky, without any older children to act as role models, and we did end up with a few yoghurts spilt and spaghetti on the floor! Our first Parents Evenings were well attended and it has been great to get to know the families who will be part of our school community over the next few years as we grow and become established. We held our first Parent Forum and parents have been able to contribute how they would like Newhall to develop and be at the heart of the community. We have also held our first PTA AGM and the PTA have organised a Bake Sale, Movies and Munch evening and are also busy planning a Christmas Fayre. We are looking to raise funds to buy some outdoor play equipment for the children as they move through the school. Although the first half term has been extremely busy and sometimes challenging. The children, staff and parents have been amazing and I would like to thank them all. I am looking forward to, what I am sure will be, an exciting journey for us all at Newhall Primary Academy and Nursery! Mrs Debbie Gayler (Headteacher)

Gallery at Parndon Mill PRESENT ARTS The Gallery at Parndon Mill presents a series of exhibitions of fine art and crafts by skilled and distinguished artists. During the Christmas period, the exhibition Present Arts maintains the same high standard, but the emphasis is on works of art which are affordable. The skills of many of the artists who have studios at the Mill are represented, showing artworks in glass by Jon Lewis and Ewa Wawrzyniak, ceramics by Aila Simpson and Geli Hinton, textiles by Ayse Simsek and Connie Flynn, paintings by Chris Seaber, original prints by Liz Boast, Tanya Scott-Durrant and Kirsten Wilson and silver jewellery by Yuki Kokai. Regular exhibitors who work nearby include Margaret Gardiner whose meticulously crafted salt glazed ceramics are well known and Marilyn Andreetti whose colourfully decorated red earthenware is popular. Ruta Bartkeviute who comes from Lithuania makes pots which are very colourful, decorated with a hint of traditional European folk art. An opportunity to exhibit is being given to several painters new to The Gallery. Glass pieces by Anona Wyi and Caroline Moiret who also presents her jewellery, painted pebbles and small metal sculptures will also be included, and once again there will be a Christmas tree with delightful hand made baubles. This exhibition is a feast for the eye and is a great opportunity to acquire a unique and special present, something new for the home, individual cards, or even decorations for the Christmas tree.

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice Christmas cards feature familiar festive scenery
St Clare Hospice charity Christmas cards feature familiar festive scenery Local charity, St Clare Hospice, has launched a festive selection of Christmas cards featuring 16 original designs to celebrate the yuletide season.
A pack of 10 cards costs £3.95 – enough to pay for one hour of the charity’s 24 hour advice line, which provides critical support and assistance to people in need of immediate advice.
Within the collection are three seasonal artistic impressions of familiar landscapes within the West Essex and East Herts community – the area in which St Clare Hospice offers its free, compassionate care to local people facing a life-limiting illness.
It costs St Clare Hospice £44 to pay for Christmas dinner for a whole family whose loved one is staying on their Inpatient Unit. That means that just 10 packs of Christmas cards need to be bought to bring a little joy to a family who is going through one of life’s most difficult journeys this Christmas.
Hand-painted by local artists in support of St Clare, locations featured in the collection include: Epping, Loughton, Bishop’s Stortford, Stansted Mountfitchet, Saffron Walden, Dunmow, and Sawbridgeworth. The festive designs are painted by a group of East Anglian based artists, Mike Sherard and Reg Siger.
The Christmas greeting cards are available to purchase from any of St Clare’s nine charity shops, or at the hospice centre itself. Alternatively, the can be purchased from St Clare’s Facebook shop page at facebook.com/stclarehospice/shop or on their eBay shop at www.stores.ebay.co.uk/St-Clare-Hospice

Words by Mick Rumens
I trust that we will enjoy a good audience for our penultimate concert of the year, Karl Jenkins ‘The Armed Man’ together with the world premiere of our musical director’s new composition “Spring Offensive”. This performance will take place at All Saints Church, Hockerill, Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday 10th November. Here we will have the support of four talented young soloists Rose Johnson, soprano, Charlotte Forfar, mezzo-soprano, Osian Wyn Bower, tenor and Gareth James, bass. We will also have the brilliant British Sinfonietta to provide our musical accompaniment and our musical director, Edward-Rhys Harry will conduct

Our final concert will be on Saturday 8th December at 7.30pm, at St Michael’s Church, 1 Windmill, Bishops Stortford where we will be performing J S Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” in its new English version by Neil Jenkins. Johann Sebastian Bach was born in 1685 in Eisenach into a great musical family. His father was the director of the town’s musicians and all his uncles were professional musicians. He became the greatest German composer and musician of the Baroque Period. In 1723 he was appointed cantor at the Thomasschule and director of music in Leipzig, where he was responsible for providing vocal music for use in the city’s churches throughout the year. In his lifetime he wrote hundreds of cantatas, choruses and oratorios together with many orchestral

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING CHEATS’ CHICKEN TIKKA BIRYANI
400g chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks 2 tbsp natural yogurt 1 tbsp tikka curry paste Squeeze of lemon juice 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 red onion, peeled and roughly chopped 450g frozen mixed vegetables with cauliflower 3 x 250g sachets instant pilau rice Sprigs of fresh mint, to garnish Mango chutney and poppadoms, to serve
If
you fancy a midweek curry but don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen, then whip up this quick and easy version of a classic Indian rice and chicken dish in next-to-no time. Using tikka curry paste and pouches of microwave spiced pilau rice, it’s the perfect cheat!
1. Toss the chicken chunks in the yogurt, curry paste and lemon juice, then spread them on a baking sheet lined with foil. Cook under a medium-hot grill for 12-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the chicken is cooked through and lightly charred in places. 2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Add the onion and fry for 2 minutes. Pick the cauliflower out of the frozen vegetables. Add to the pan and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until browned in places. 3. Stir in the remaining vegetables, the rice and 90ml water or vegetable stock. Cover and cook over a low heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring once or twice until piping hot all the way through. Toss the hot cooked chicken tikka chunks into the rice. Garnish with sprigs of mint and serve with chutney and poppadoms.
TIPs: To make a cooling cucumber and mint yogurt to accompany the biryani, mix ¼ of a grated onion and ¼ of a grated cucumber with 300ml natural yogurt, 2 tbsp freshly chopped mint and ½ tsp ground cumin.

Charity of the year St Clare to hold seven ‘Light Up A Life’ services this Christmas St Clare Hospice is preparing to come together to celebrate the lives of family, friends and loved ones – along with hundreds of local people – at a series of seven Light Up A Life services being held over the festive season. St Clare will be holding the first of their Light Up A Life services on Sunday 25th November at All Saints Parish Church in Ashdon, near Saffron Walden. Christmas can be a very emotional occasion, a special season for spending time with friends and family, and for remembering those who are no longer with us. Their absence can be deeply felt, whether their death was recent, or if many years have passed. Light Up A Life is St Clare’s Christmas time celebration of everything that the hospice stands for – standing side by side with families from across the community in honour of their loved ones. Unique services will be held throughout the charity’s catchment area in November and December with carols, music, readings and refreshments, in the company of those who understand. Sarah Thompson, Chief Executive of St Clare Hospice, extended the invitation to the services to the whole of the charity’s local community: “St Clare has been bringing warmth and love to the lives of people across West Essex and the borders of East Hertfordshire for more than 25 years. The care and support we offer does not end when someone dies, and our Light Up A Life services are just one of the ways we

continue to support people when they need it most.” “I warmly invite everyone in our local towns to join with us for one of our Light Up A Life services – whether that is at the Hospice, at a service near your home, or a simple period of reflection in your own home. The events are so special, and offer precious time to pause and remember those close to our hearts, in the company of others who understand.” Two events are being held at the Hospice in Hastingwood along with five other services across the St Clare catchment area. The Hospice services, on Thursday 13th December at 7pm and Saturday 15th December at 4:30pm, are free to attend and open to everyone, whatever their faith – and are not only for the many patients and families St Clare has helped. Once again St Clare will also be running an online Light Up A Life Book of Remembrance. This allows you to put the name of your loved one and a short personal message into the Online Book, and if you wish, to make an online donation to the hospice charity. You can also tell us which service you are planning to attend. Visit the dedicated webpage to make your dedication: stclarehospice.org.uk/light-upa-life You can let the Hospice know which service you are planning to attend through the webpage or by phoning the event organisers on 01279 773750.

The Henry Moore Primary School Year 2 trip to the Greenwich Maritime Museum As part of our Year 2 Explorers topic, we visited the Greenwich Maritime Museum on Friday 14th September. During the day, we enjoyed looking around the museum galleries, meeting a real pirate and exploring the Ahoy! Section. Meeting a real pirate was our favourite part of the day – she was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We are thoroughly enjoying our Explorers topic and we are already preparing and looking forward to our Explorers assembly before half term.
