WELCOME

THE

CM17

HELLO AND WELCOME TO The Christmas edition of the cm17 connection It’s that time of year again when I invite you to nominate your favourite local charity to become our charity of the year 2019. I’ll be drawing up a shortlist for voting during December. Whichever charity or community interest company receives the most Facebook “likes” will receive £100 in lieu of sending out Christmas cards and of course, they will benefit from a years worth of promotion within the magazine and all the benefits that brings! Please do get in touch; I really want to support the charities that are closest to YOUR hearts. Some of you may be aware of the house fire in Church Langley that caused devastation for a local family. Our community friends, neighbours, strangers, trades and businesses have all come together to support Emma and her girls in any way that they can - it’s been a truly heartwarming thing to behold, well done everyone! There will be a fundraising event 8th December at Church Langley Community Centre, 7pm start, entrance £5, under 16’s free (see page44). China Trek 2018 Update: We did it - both the trek AND exceeded our target! As a group we’ve raised over £124,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Thank you to everyone that has supported us and contributed to the total raised - we are humbled by your generosity. Wishing you a Merry Christmas & a happy and prosperous new year! Until next month, Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Readers, I hope you are getting into the festive spirit! This past month, the Chancellor set out the Government’s spending plans for the year ahead. I strongly welcome this Budget - it is one for the hard working families in Harlow, boosting take-home pay and ensuring less is taken out of pay packets! The National Living Wage is increasing to £8.21 an hour, translating as a £690 annual pay rise for full-time workers. The Personal Tax Allowance is also rising a year earlier than expected, in April, meaning workers will now take home £12,500, income tax-free. After campaigning to freeze fuel duty, I was delighted with the announcement that petrol prices will be kept down for motorists, for the ninth year running, saving the average Harlow motorist £1,000 per year. We can also continue to support our great Harlow pubs, with beer, cider and spirits duty also frozen. A further £2 billion a year will be invested into mental health provisions, including placing a dedicated mental health team into every state school and A&E unit in England. This will make a huge difference to the lives of those struggling with the illnesses we cannot see. In Westminster, I’ve been working hard to secure investment for a new health campus in Harlow. On 5 November, I presented my third debate to fellow MPs and the Minister for Health, to reiterate our desperate need for a new hospital. There is no question that the staff at Princess Alexandra Hospital have worked remarkably hard to bring the hospital out of special measures - just watch the new ‘Delivering Babies’ series with TV personality Emma Willis on the W Channel, featuring our very own Maternity Ward! But the facilities are no longer fit for the 21st century. The building is quite literally crumbling under the pressure of an influx of patients, now serving over 350,000 people across West Essex

and with one of the busiest A&E departments in England. The hospital management and employees are determined to make continuous improvements to services, and with the upcoming move of Public Health England to Harlow, we need the facilities to take advantage of their expertise. In my debate, I urged the Government to utilise some of the £20.5 billion promised to the NHS in the recent Budget to help fund a new health campus that would bring together A&E services, GP provision, social care, physiotherapy and a new ambulance hub. In other news, I was saddened to learn of the events in Woking Park in Surrey recently, where 8 children fell from an inflatable slide at a fireworks display. Many of us will have been reminded of the tragic loss of 7-year-old Summer Grant, a beautiful young girl, in Harlow in 2016. These tragedies are entirely preventable and I want to ensure that fairgrounds are restored to being a happy, safe environment for families. This is why, I am reiterating my urge to the Government for a temporary ban on inflatables and bouncy castles in public places until all the regulations have been amended and I am very pleased to have the support from Harlow Council on this. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas, Robert

IT’s your community

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice hospice launches new community Big brew initiative Community Big Brew is a regular series of coffee mornings that take place monthly across four St Clare sites, offering a welcoming space for local people to gather, share news, and feel connected. The initiative is part of the Hospice’s wider community engagement strategy and is integral to their vision to become a ‘hospice without walls’. Community Big Brew is about welcoming local people to come together in their community to meet, feel connected, and engage with their local hospice. Community Big Brew coffee mornings take place monthly across four different St Clare sites: the main hospice in Hastingwood, their Dunmow shop, Debden shop and Loughton shop. The events are open to all – shoppers, supporters, and local people. Attendees have the chance for a cup of tea and a chat, to meet new people, to share local news, and to find out how they could get more involved with St Clare or other support services in the local community; whether as a volunteer or supporter, or by accessing their varied services. The Community Big Brew events are run by St Clare’s Community Engagement team. St Clare’s Community Engagement Manager, Sally Muylders, said: “Community Big Brew is all about bringing local people together and helping them to feel connected, and part of their community. Our charity shops are already thriving community hubs – with shoppers, donators and volunteers often saying how their local St Clare shop is like a ‘family’. Our shops therefore are the perfect place to hold a monthly coffee morning, enabling those current

6

relationships to develop, and for people to meet others. Many people see the ‘hospice’ as just one building near Harlow – but we believe a hospice is also a very special way of caring, and connecting with people, which reaches far beyond the four walls of our centre in Hastingwood. We want St Clare to be a place which is supporting people, and connecting with them, wherever they are – and whatever stage of life they are at, not just at the end of their life. We hope that by providing a place for people to simply pop in for some company and a cup of tea, will help them to feel more connected to their local community. We hope lots of people will come along for our Community Big Brews throughout December and January to see what it’s all about!” Sally Muylders continued: “The Hospice, and all our shops, are an integral part of our local communities and we want to always be seen to have an ‘open door’, welcoming everyone from across our catchment area. We know we have more work to do to engage with our communities, and to develop that sense of openness, and the Community Big Brew project is just one step on that road. There will be much more to come, so keep your eyes and ears out for our community engagement plans!” Community Big Brews will be taking place throughout December and then monthly. Feel free just to pop along to a Community Big Brew or, for more information, contact Sally Muylders on 01279 773709 or email sally.muylders@stclarehospice. org.uk

policing our local community Essex Community Messaging: Darker nights, turn on some lights! The tips for a crime free Christmas shop start before you leave your house, after all you don’t want to come home to find the house broken into. 1. Garden tools securely locked away in the shed – Burglars will be happy to use your tools to break into your house. 2. Create the illusion your home is occupied - Radio and lights on a timer in rooms you would normally occupy, there is even a device called “Fake TV” that flashes a series of lights when it gets dark that looks like the TV is on. There are now door bells that you can view and answer from your Smartphone. 3. Lock up properly not just your windows and doors in the house, but also any gates and outbuildings. 4. Choose a “Park Mark” car park where you can http://www.parkmark.co.uk/ . By choosing a Park Mark® Safer Parking facility you are visiting a car park that has been vetted by the Police and has measures in place in order to create a safer environment for both you and your vehicle. 5. Leave nothing in sight within your car, remove the “Sat Nav” cradle and clean the mark on the windscreen.

6. When you lock your car with the remote look for the light flash confirmation or better still try the door handle before leaving the car. 7. Now you’re starting your shop watch your purse, wallet, mobile phone and handbag especially in busy places, don’t leave them on display in bags or on counters while you pay, and while you’re paying watch that no one is watching you entering your PIN when making purchases or withdrawing cash. 8. Time to stop for lunch or a cuppa, don’t drop your guard. Mobile phone on the table, shopping by the chair, wallet or purse visible, coat, jacket or handbag over the chair; if a thief sees it a thief will steal it. 9. Need to off load some of those purchases in the car, look around are you being watched? Back to (5 & 6) above again. 10. Time go home, don’t fall for any distractions while you load the car i.e. “you dropped some money” pointing to cash on the ground, holding a map “can you tell me the way to….”. While you are engaged the second person steals from your car on the other side. Close and lock your car before speaking to anyone.

Newhall Primary academy school & nursery Grand OPening We held our official ‘Grand Opening’ ceremony on the morning of Wednesday 17th October. It was great to be able to share what a fantastic group of children we have and our amazing building. For those people who did not attend, we had over 80 guests and several guest speakers including: Cathie Paine (Deputy CEO from REAch2), Cllr Tony Ball (Deputy Cabinet Member for education and Skills) and Maggie Hulcoop (Chair of Harlow Council). Cathie Paine, Deputy Chief Executive of REAch2 Academy Trust said: “We are absolutely delighted to be opening a brand-new, state of the art school for Harlow – at REAch2 we are committed to provide exceptional opportunities for learning in every single one of our academies. Newhall will be no different, and we look forward to working with Debbie and her team to make that promise a reality for local families.” Cllr Tony Ball, ECC’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “I was delighted to attend the brand-new Newhall Primary Academy School and Nursery today and help officially open the new facilities.” Over October half term a lot of the landscaping was completed at the front and back of the Primary Academy and Nursery. The plants and trees look great and we have also planted the Willow and Cherry tree that we bought to help celebrate our Grand Opening. Some of the children also spent time in our Holiday Club and had lots of fun making things and exploring the outdoor environment. All parents in both the Primary Academy and Nursery now have access to ‘Tapestry’ and are

able to access their child’s learning journal online. The staff are also enjoying looking and reading about what the children have been up to at home! We have had our first routine Environmental Health inspection. This went really well and we were given a 5 star rating for our catering kitchen, which includes, breakfasts, snacks, lunches and teas for the Nursery, Primary Academy and Extended School provision. ‘The Friends of Newhall’ have now held a Bake Sale and ‘Movies and Munch’ film evening to raise money for some outdoor play equipment for the children. They are now busy organising our Christmas Fayre which will be held on Saturday 8th December between 2pm and 4pm. This is open to all members of the community and will include a Santa’s Grotto, Bake Sale, ‘Name the Reindeer’ competition plus other stalls. Please come along as we would love to see you! Finally, we have held a Nursery Open Morning and a Primary Academy Open Day. Both events were well attended and we look forward to receiving applications for children to join us, either in the Nursery or current Reception, or as part of our September 2019 Reception intake. Ann Kosla Church Langley Church I’ve had many Christmas presents over my long life! Some fun, some useful, some consumed, some precious and many forgotten. I think the most meaningful present was a special bible inscribed ‘To my darling Ann from Charlie - Christmas 1990’. I still use it 28 years later because I love looking at passages, searching for the meaning of words and trying to understand what God is teaching me about who He is and how He works. When I first opened the wrapping paper, I was so thrilled, but I hid it from the rest of my family who were dismissive of my Christian faith, for fear of their mocking. They thought I was going through ‘a phase’ or been brainwashed by the church. They had no concept of how life transforming my faith in Jesus was, I found acceptance and hope, discovering His love to be genuine after years of being an atheist. I know that many today are dismissive of the Christian faith, but when challenged to think about the most meaningful present it was the one, I thought of immediately. On pondering I think it showed me how much my husband knew me – what I liked, what was important to me, who I am. I hope that this year you receive a present from someone who knows you and loves you – I pray that you may receive the gift of life that Jesus gives – it surely is the most meaningful gift you will ever receive.

Tony Mayes Harlow Baptist Church At Christmas I often hear folks talking to their children about being good to get a visit from Santa. A sort of carrot and stick to try to affect their behaviour in the exciting days that lead up to the celebrations. We often hear, when children visit Santa’s grotto, “Have you been good this year?” Christmas, reminds me that regardless of how good or bad we have been, God sent Jesus to help us get things better and to recognise that we get things wrong, but through Jesus, God forgives us. The gift of Jesus won’t be taken away if we mess up or get things wrong. You might be thinking, so Jesus is Tony’s best Christmas gift then? And to a degree I would agree with you. Discovering Jesus for myself over 30 years ago, was a life changing experience for me and every Christmas I ‘m reminded again of God’s incredible love. But of all of the gifts, the one that is the most special was the Christmas when my wife met Jesus and had that life changing experience herself. The birth of Jesus was a one off, amazing act of love by God who loves each of us and wants each of us to know him and experience that new life. If you haven’t experienced that for yourselves, find time in the busyness to come and celebrate and find out for yourself this Christmas. Happy Christmas.

Dave Welch Alison Taylor Potter Street Baptist church This is interesting because I am not a ‘things’ person, I am sure there are things of significance at a particular time or from a particular person, but I can’t actually think of anything. There was a time when I was a child when I was absolutely amazed that Father Christmas could get clothes that even fitted my bear! Yes my bear! That would be in the dark ages before whole chains of shops grew up around this business! Things people have made have at times carried great significance at a particular time when they have gone to so much trouble and effort and you feel bad for the hurried last minute voucher you may have thrust upon them. Of much more significance to me are the people we share Christmas with, family and friends, the people we choose to have around us. The thing is, if you ask a minister what is the most significant thing to them, they will say it is the reason we choose to give the gifts and the reason we choose to share with each other, and that the greatest gift of all is God coming to this earth to reveal his love and point us all in the right direction through Jesus Christ, because without that there would be no gifts or celebration. Who am I to disappoint.

St Mary’s Church, OLd harlow I thought last year would have been my last opportunity to write in CM17, but things didn’t work out as we thought they would. Still, it has meant another year at St Mary’s in Churchgate Street and that has been wonderful as we have welcomed new people into the church family. Having said that, by the time the December CM17 comes out I will have retired (really) and I do want to wish you all a blessed Christmas and brilliant 2019. The question we have been asked to respond to this year is poignant. Christmas was just Christmas with the real meaning and depth obscured by the events that would happen. Don’t get me wrong, giving and receiving presents, family gatherings etc were wonderful, but I have to look back to Christmas 1972 for the time when I first really grasped the greatest and most memorable gift I ever received. I became a Christian at the age of 20 on September 7th 1972. As Christmas approached I remember thinking and feeling that for the first time I was starting to understand the real meaning of why we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. That Christmas and then Easter changed my world view as I could understand just how much God loves us, revealed through Him sending His Son to give himself for us. I pray that you may encounter the love of God in Christ Jesus this Christmas.

St mary Magdalene church

“the longest night” A quiet time for Christmas at St Mary Magdalene, Harlow Common Fr James writes: Christmas is great, isn’t it? Time off work, nice food and presents, chance to see the family, and the time when Christians celebrate a very special moment in history – God coming to be with us in Jesus, born in Bethlehem 2000 years ago. Yes, but….not everyone feels like celebrating at Christmas. Many of us feel under extra pressure at this time of year: stress levels are high and the rest of the world seems to expect us all to have a good time. And we may be lonely, or depressed, or recovering from the loss of a loved one. For all these reasons, the usual Christmas jollity can be very difficult. So this year at St Mary Magdalene we’re having a special event on the Thursday before Christmas. It’s a service, but an

informal one- you can stay as long as you like between 6.30pm and 8pm. We’ll hear the Christmas story with other readings, sing some carols and hear other reflective Christmas music: we’ll light candles, say some prayers and be quiet. But above all it’s a chance for a bit of space for all of us in the run up to Christmas – and a chance perhaps for us to be reminded of God’s love for all of us. We’re calling it “The Longest Night” – because in that week, our daylight hours are at their shortest. But, if you’re in a dark place of your own this Christmas, this might be a moment when some light can shine into your life and your situation. Any queries? Please do get in touch with me.

Harlow Chorus A rewarding Armistice Day concert Words by Mick Rumens Our concert to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I was a great success.

On a rainy November day the chorus, soloists, orchestra, our piano accompanist, organist and musical director turned up at All Saints church in Bishops Stortford to spend the afternoon in rehearsal for our evenings concert. Our Musical Director, Edward-Rhys Harry, is very thorough in his coaching and this was reflected in our performance. The programme included the premiere performance of Edward’s new composition, “Spring Offensive”, which is the title of the poem by Wilfred Owen, surrounded by two others: The Cherry Trees ( Edward Thomas) and a fragment of Summer in England 1914 (Alice Meynell). The three poems are knitted together (adapted by Dr John Paternoster) to form this short work designed to be a companion piece to Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man. The work includes a solo cello which prevails throughout the work. Our solo cellist was Anna Beryl, who comes from a musical family. Her mother is a cellist, and her father was a percussionist. Her studies took her to the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, USA where she graduated with a Master of Music and Performing Arts degree. Anna began her studies privately at the age of 8 and also plays the piano. She currently enjoys a busy and varied musical life combining session work and also chamber music. Regular orchestral work keeps her busy with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Philharmonia, London Symphony amongst others including Guest Principal of the orchestra of Scottish Opera. Her talent shone through and we received many complements for her performance, as we did for our young student soloists who took part in both the Spring Offensive and The Armed man. Rose Johnson, soprano, is currently in her fourth year at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. For the past three years she has been a Choral Scholar

with the BBC National Chorus of Wales, which has. given her countless opportunities including singing in the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. She has also had singing roles all over Europe including Salzburg Cathedral, St Marks Basilica, Barcelona Cathedral and the Segrada Familia. Charlotte Forfar, Mezzo soprano, is also a fourth year vocal and opera student at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Charlotte made her opera debut in the chorus of Tosca as part of the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod with the Welsh National Orchestra and Sir Bryn Terfel. Our tenor soloist was Osian Wyn Bowen who originates from the harbour town of Burry Port, South Wales. He has performed with Sir Bryn Terfel, and at venues all over Wales and at the O2 Arena, The Queen’s Theatre, London, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the Milford Haven Music Festival. He received an invitation to perform out in Belgium at the Tyne Cot, World War 1 Cemetery as part of the BBC-s commemoration of the Battle of Passschendaele, which was broadcast live globally and in front of the Prince of Wales, the Royal Family and European Ministers. Finally, our Bass soloist was Gareth James is also currently studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He was awarded the David Lloyd Owen Scholarship from Cardiff University and is a member of the college’s Chamber Choir. Gareth has performed as soloist in J.S.Bach-s St Matthews Passion with the Aylesbury Choral Society. He is also a scholar with BBC National Chorus of Wales and took part in their production of Mozart’s Magic Flute. Their contribution to the evenings performance was impeccable and the evening ended with a prolonged standing ovation from our large appreciative audience. On behalf of Harlow Chorus I wish all the staff and distributors of CM17, plus your readers, the compliments of the season and hope you all have a Happy, Healthy Christmas holiday.

The Henry Moore Primary School World War One Week The week beginning 5th November was a special week at the school. We chose to commemorate 100 years since the end of The Great War with a week-long topic on the subject. Each year group had their own focus including the role of women during the war, the influence animals had on the outcome of the war and the uniforms and transport that were used. Different songs from the era were learnt and performed, and at the end of the week children from across the school shared their knowledge and experiences in two sharing assemblies. It is important that we always remember those who sacrificed so much so that we can live our lives as we do today. The children have learnt about events and individuals and the importance of these.

We wish all CM17 readers a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING CHRISTMAS MINCEMEAT SLICE 225g plain flour 165g unsalted butter, chilled and diced 1 egg yolk blended with 1 tbsp cold water 75g caster sugar

This

300g good quality mincemeat 50g ground almonds 2 tbsp flaked almonds

delicious festive slice can be served warm as a pud with custard, thick cream or brandy butter or simply cool completely and serve instead of mince pies.

1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles very fine breadcrumbs (alternatively pulse in a food processor until fine breadcrumbs). 2. Remove 100g of the breadcrumb mixture and cover and chill in the fridge. Stir 25g of the sugar into the remaining mixture, then stir in the egg and water and mix to a firm dough (adding a little more water if needed). Knead lightly then wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm square tart tin. Prick the pastry all over with a fork. Line the pastry case with baking paper and baking beans and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the lining paper and beans and bake for a further 5-7 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Cool slightly. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4. 4. Spread the mincemeat in the pastry case. Mix the rest of the sugar and the ground almonds into the reserved pastry crumb mixture and scatter over the mincemeat to cover completely. 5. Return the tin to the oven and bake for a further 25-30 minutes or until the crumble topping is pale golden. Scatter over the flaked almonds and leave to cool before removing from the tin and cutting into 12-14 thin slices. TIP: Add some finely chopped toasted hazelnuts or walnuts to the crumble topping for an extra nutty flavour.
