WELCOME

THE

CM17

HELLO AND WELCOME TO The New Year edition of the cm17 connection This is my 14th New Years editor’s letter! I’m hoping that, by now, you may have a little feel of my excitement for this time of year! I just love it! (You’ll also know that I love the start of EVERY season!) Plans to be made, goals to be set, holidays to be booked - it’s such an optimistic time for me. Sure, there’s lots going on locally, nationally and internationally, there always is but I have complete control of how I respond, react and feel. And I choose to be happy and optimistic! Tied up with tight deadlines at the end of last year (this edition was actually produced and printed 2 weeks before Christmas!) I didn’t have time to tell you about an award I was given by Harlow Lions in November. I was nominated for and received a certificate of appreciation “for the help given to Harlow Lions Club and many other local charities and good causes”. SUCH an honour! The picture above is of Harlow Lion President Ian Thorogood presenting me with the centennial Certificate of Appreciation, personally signed by the Countess of Wessex - totally going to get it framed! Thank you to everyone at Harlow Lions, your support for the local community and those in need is deserving of an award too! If you use Facebook you may have seen a flurry of new community groups being created, all inspired by the success of Nicola Purse and her Coalport Close group. You can find details of these groups on page 45, let me know if I’ve missed yours and I’ll add it for you. I’d like to wish you a very happy and prosperous new year! Until next month, Lorraine

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear Readers, First of all, I wish you all a very Happy New Year! I hope that everyone has had a wonderful Christmas break and is looking forward to the year ahead. Switching on the Christmas lights in Old Harlow was a real highlight for me. I congratulate everyone who worked so hard to make the day spectacular, particularly the Harlow Baptist Church, shopkeepers and volunteers. There were some brilliant street performances and thank you to all who came out to celebrate - around 1,000 people were there! This past year, we have made some real progress in Harlow. The Government’s announcement of £20.5 billion extra funding for our NHS means that we can look forward to a bright future for the health service, as the NHS celebrated its 70th birthday in 2018. I’ve been drawing attention to the state of our Princess Alexandra Hospital in Parliament and had my third debate in the House of Commons on the need for greater investment. In December, the Health Secretary announced that an extra £9.5 million will be given to the A&E department in Harlow - this is fantastic news! Although in the long-term we need a new health campus, the A&E unit sees the highest number of attendances per day in proportion to the population it serves, in the entire country. This expansion will make a massive difference to the residents who need it most and help alleviate the pressure on our A&E staff who have worked day in, day out, to keep us safe over the festive period. The rise of anti-social behaviour in Old Harlow is also of great concern to me. Over the past few months, I’ve been working closely with residents, the local Council and Essex Police to address the criminal activity and gangs, particularly in Market Street.

No doubt, we need more police presence in the area, particularly at peak times, and I am pleased that dispersal orders, allowing officers to move along groups of individuals before tensions escalate, have been granted over some weekends recently. I am also looking at options with the pubs in the area - I want to protect their business, but also ensure they can have a more neighbourly relationship with the wonderful community around them. As we look to 2019, I will be continuing to work hard for Harlow. I will continue with my campaigns to cut the cost of living after the success of the freeze on fuel prices for the ninth year running and the cost of beer and spirits also frozen, allowing us to celebrate the New Year for less! I also want to see more funding for our wonderful local schools and will continue to meet with teachers to understand their challenges, before presenting these arguments to Ministers in the Government. As ever, you can write to me via email (halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com), attend one of my surgeries and keep up to date with all my news on Facebook (Robert H Halfon), Twitter (@halfon4harlowMP) and Instagram (@ halfon4harlowmp). I look forward to a brilliant year ahead for Harlow and wish you a very Happy New Year! Best wishes, Robert

Local Friendship group friends forever - a new voluntary Dementia support group By Tess Ashylyn

I have worked with those suffering from dementia and their families for many years. I set the group up to provide a safe, relaxed, non judgmental social environment for people with dementia and their family carers who face difficulties attending public places, such as cinemas, restaurants and bars. It allows people with dementia and their families to be involved in the wider community therefore reducing the sense of isolation and exclusion. The people attending the group have formed genuine friendships and have found true emotional support. It is often their only social occasion where everyone can relax with other

people, who truly understand the difficulties of living with dementia. Friends Forever are currently without financial assistance, the group currently have 50 attendees and it is growing each month. We run the first Friday of the month at the Moot House (the new hall) at the Stow. We have a New year party with an Elvis tribute on Friday 4th January 1-3.30pm, please get in touch if you would like to come along. What the mind cant remember, the heart never forgets.

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice winter walkies is coming! Puppy love is in the air at St Clare Hospice as registration officially opens for the charity’s annual Winter Walkies event. The 5k pooch parade will be taking place at the Hastingwood-based hospice on Sunday 24th February and more than 200 walkers and their furry friends are expected to support the fundraiser. St Clare Hospice’s Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, is organising the event and said: “This year marks the 13th time the Hospice has hosted the event and it is as popular as ever! The 2018 walk saw 250 walkers and their dogs take part, and we are hoping even more people register for 2019.” Emma continued: “Anyone is welcome to join us on this rural route across the beautiful Essex countryside – whether you are a dog owner or not. Just remember your wellies as it is likely there will be plenty of muddy feet and paws. It is such a great event – you’d be barking mad to miss it!”

for Winter Walkies 2019 in order to be eligible for the competition. Registration costs £10 for adults and £5 for children, which includes a free soup, dog rosette and certificates for children. Walkers can also sign up on the day. Please be aware that the route is not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. This year’s event is kindly sponsored by Eppingbased vets, Forest Veterinary Centre. Photo credit Vikki Lince, Pawesome Pawtraits.

As part of the event’s launch the hospice is once again hosting their ever-popular ‘Cutest Canine Competition’ – and the charity is calling on local pet-owners to enter their favourite photograph of their pet to win a hamper of doggy goodies and the chance to officially start the Winter Walkies event. Voting for the St Clare ‘Cutest Canine Competition’ will run from Monday 21st to Friday 25th January 2019 on the charity’s Facebook page. All entries are due by 12noon on Friday 18th January and entrants must have registered

Last year’s winner, and the leader of the pack at Winter Walkies 2018, was Milo.

CHOSEN PLACES

A bright, colourful exhibition to cheer up January. Chosen Places: paintings by Helen Ryan and ceramics by Nigel Earle. Helen Ryan describes her work as “painting through the lens of memory”. Her creative practice focuses on recording and expressing what she sees, thinks, and feels as she travels through the journey of life. Her latest work in acrylic paint and mixed media, moves from the figurative into abstraction portraying the tension and movement of nature and elemental forces. She uses shape, colour, form and gestural marks that convey the energetic balance between freedom and control. Nigel Earle’s ceramics always rely on the natural character of different clays. He uses glazes and applied colours quite sparingly suggesting a certain ageing and weathering. These textures are often highlighted by the surface application of raw metal oxides and he also frequently embeds further metal pins and suchlike in the clay. Like Helen, Nigel has drawn his forms, textures and colours from a pool of memory, experience and imagination gathered over many decade

Newhall Primary academy school & nursery our first term Now that our first Christmas at Newhall Primary Academy and Nursery is over, it is hard to believe that we have only been open a term. We have continued to support different charities, including taking part in Children in Need. The children and staff had lots of fun dressing up and we also made Pudsey cakes in our Teaching Kitchen. In total we raised £140! In our Reception classes, the children used Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ as inspiration for their own art work. We now have our own art gallery in school to celebrate their learning. Reading and writing in Reception continues to develop using the Read Write Inc programme. The children use their ‘Fred Fingers’ to help them sound out and write words using the sounds that they have learned. The children’s books also show that they are making good progress in their writing. During their Maths lessons, the children use ‘Number Disco’ to help them with their counting. They then use Numicon and other practical resources to support them with counting and number recognition. All of the children are really focused in lessons and keen to talk about their learning. We have continued our ‘Outdoor Adventures’ and the children had an amazing time outside when they toasted marshmallows over a fire. They learned about the importance of being safe around fire and how to ensure that they dress and behave sensibly when using fire. We also took the children on their first school trip to see ‘The Astonishing Adventures of Pinocchio’

at Hertford Theatre. The highlight of the show seems to have been a guest appearance from Mr Morris (Our Extended Schools Lead) as the ‘Wonky Donkey’. This caused great hilarity amongst children and staff – I am not sure he has recovered from the ordeal yet! Our two Christmas performances of ‘Whoops-aDaisy Angel’ were a great success. The singing sounded beautiful and the children looked superb in the costumes which were provided by their parents. It is amazing how confident they all are, considering they have only been at school for a term. We held our first Christmas Fayre on Saturday 8th December. It was a great success and we were taken aback with how many prizes were donated for the Grand Prize Draw and the Tombola. Thank you to everyone in the community who donated or attended the event. We hope that you enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did. In the last week of term, Father Christmas visited both the Nursery and the School and delivered a book to every child. The children also enjoyed a Grand Ball, which celebrated the end of their topic on ‘Tiaras and Turrets’. Mrs Debbie Gayler (Headteacher)

ruggerbugs peter andre joins ruggerbugs to celebrate fundraising success

On 26th November 2018 Singer, presenter and TV personality, Peter Andre exclusively attended a Ruggerbugs class in Harlow, in recognition of the incredible fundraising efforts by the children’s activity provider earlier this year. Ruggerbugs, a fun and energetic children’s sports development programme based around non-contact rugby, took part in Children’s Activities Week, during May 2018, along with over 10,000 other activity providers, to creatively fundraise monies for national charity Caudwell Children, for whom Peter Andre is an ambassador, and the Children’s Activities Association.

The TV star devoted his time to positively engage with the children in a fun-packed Ruggerbugs session attended by local families and their children. During the high-energy activity, Peter kicked off his shoes and fully committed to the role of rugby enthusiast and child entertainer. Peter was eager to get stuck in with the activity and after the session commented; “I had been aware of these kinds of events and classes taking place around the country, but I’m thrilled to have been able to get hands-on in a Ruggerbugs class and meet one of the teams

fundraising success behind the incredible fundraising that took place during Children’s Activities Week. Being from Australia I should know all about rugby and so it has been great fun getting involved with the kids and seeing just how happy and active everyone is! It’s wonderful to see the children making new friends and burning off energy – something parents will love too as the kids are sure to fall asleep after all the fun!” Andrew Peasey, Founder and Managing Director of Ruggerbugs, is delighted with the recognition from Caudwell Children and comments; ‘It’s incredibly humbling to have been part of Children’s Activities week 2018 and ultimately winning the Shooting Star Award for our efforts. As a business based on providing sports activity for young children we simply had to get involved, give back and raise funds for those less fortunate than ourselves. To have one of the charity’s ambassadors, Peter Andre, attend our

class this week was huge fun and a real treat after everyone’s hard work.” Ben Sutcliffe, Director of Executive Projects, Caudwell Children added; “This year Ruggerbugs simply went above and beyond in their fundraising efforts for us during Children’s Activities week. Through their creativity and sponsored challenges, they raised an impressive £2,700 to directly help disabled children and families. It was a pleasure to get involved with the Ruggerbugs team and we look forward to smashing more fundraising targets during Children’s Activities Week next year.” As well as Peter Andre, the Ruggerbugs class was also attended by local resident and Championship World Record-holding Paralympian Richard Chiassaro, who wowed the children with his wheelchair racing skills and tricks as they attempted to race him through the various obstacles and over the touch line.

Harlow Chorus The Second Half of our 2018/2019 season Words by Mick Rumens

The year 2018 was, in many ways, a great success for the chorus, with the arrival of our new Musical Director, Edward-Rhys Harry. Toward the end of the year Edward achieved his Doctorate in Music and is now Dr Edward-Rhys Harry and his achievements, on our behalf, continue to inspire us.

our regular supporters. For this concert we will be staging two performances on the day, at 4.00pm and 7.30pm, to cater for all our many supporters, especially families, in Harlow and the immediate surrounds. Afternoon tea will be served between the two performances. Fuller details in later editions of CM17 Connection.

We have two concerts left before the end of the season in July, and the first will be in a new venue for us, Sts Peter & Paul with All Saints, Chingford on Saturday 27th April at 7.30pm. Here we will be performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah supported by the British Sinfonietta. Full details in the February edition of CM17 Connection together with details of audience coaches.

I trust that we may look forward to meeting many of you at our 2019 concerts and that those of you who would like to join us as chorus members will come along to St John’s ARC in the Old Town on Monday evenings from 7.15 - 9.45 in the New Year. We have had a number of new members join us since September and they are all now well settled in.

Our final concert of the season will be on Saturday 13th July at St John’s Arts & Recreation Centre, Old Harlow. The title for the concert, Harlow Chorus Sings Music From The Movies and TV indicates a lighter, but no less demanding, programme which will, we hope, appeal to a wider, perhaps younger audience, together with

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING LEMON POT PUDDINGS

100g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 175g golden caster sugar Zest and juice of 2 large lemons (you will need about 120ml lemon juice) 4 medium eggs, separated 75g plain flour

These

130ml milk 2 tbsp flaked almonds Icing sugar, for dustin

delicious individual hot lemon puddings are the perfect sweet treat after a hearty winter supper or Sunday lunch.

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas mark 4. Grease six 175ml ovenproof ramekin dishes with butter. 2. Beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until pale and creamy. Beat in the lemon zest then beat in the egg yolks, one at a time. Sift over half the plain flour and fold in, then fold in the lemon juice and milk. Sift over the rest of the flour and fold in. 3. Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared ramekin dishes and sprinkle over the flaked almonds. Place the dishes in a large roasting tin and pour in enough hot water to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden on top. Serve immediately, dusted with icing sugar.

TIP: These puddings will form a lovely layer of thick lemon custard under the sponge

topping so take care not to overcook them. They will still have a slight wobble in the centre.

The Henry Moore Primary School christmas 2018 at henry moore Year R performed ‘I Spy Christmas.’ KS1 What a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas at The Henry Moore School in KS1 with a farmyard style Nativity, called ‘The Best Christmas Present of all.’ The children had lots of fun singing, dancing and performing to their families. Year 3 celebrated Christmas this year with a wonderful Carol Concert at St Andrew’s Methodist Church. Year 4 and 5 – Bah Humbug! Year 4 and 5 children worked very hard on the production of Bah Humbug! Based on ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. They were involved in not only learning songs, dances and lots of acting, but also helped to make props and scenery. Their acting was incredible and we are so proud of the children and what they have achieved! Year 6 performed a fantastic ‘Christmas Celebration’ at St Andrew’s Church-with delightful Christmas songs, carols and drama. School Choir School Choir was very busy over the Christmas season with performances at St Paul’s Church, The Water Gardens and Spurriers as well as at the School Concert. We were delighted that Rosalie joined us with her harp!

community ANNOUNCEMENT In light of the continued problems exiting Church Langley during peak traffic times, there has been a suggestion to and interest in rebooting the Church Langley Residents’ Association (CLRA). There will be a meeting held in early January which will be announced via various Facebook groups, (no date available at time of going to print, sorry!) If you are interested in volunteering for a role on the committee or simply want to help make a difference, please keep an eye out and come along.

We’re stronger together!
