WELCOME

THE

CM17

HELLO AND WELCOME TO The New Year edition of the cm17 connection January is my fav month, actually a bit like Len Goodman from Strictly, ALL the months are my favourite! However, there’s no better month than the month that you’re in! I like the optimism that comes at the start of a new year - the clean slate, the “I can do anything”, the “This is my year!” kinda feeling. We will ignore the fact that the third Monday in January is said to be the most depressing day of the year... a mathematical formula based on time elapsed since Christmas, time to wait for pay day and the failure of new year’s resolutions! Others argue it is a marketing tool to help sell summer holidays! Either way, one day will not detract from the 30 other days in January. For the record, I should disclose that this month is also the month of my birth, so I may be a little biased. It also, happens to be my 50th! I know, how did that happen! My birthday gift to myself is to do one celebratory thing a month for the entire year, I already have a few adventures pencilled in, which I’ll probably share as the year unfolds. However, if it wasn’t my “special” birthday what a great new years resolution it would be to set yourself one thing to do a month - one fear to conquer, one trip to make, one meal to share... Just one thing. That’s quite manageable isn’t it? I challenge you. What one thing will you set yourself to do this month? Let me know how it goes... Until next month,

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow

Dear readers, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year. I will be keeping up the hard work in 2018 and would like to share my plans with you. Building an even better Harlow We need more housing, but more importantly, we need more affordable housing. After campaigning for this, I was delighted that the Chancellor announced £44bn of investment that will enable 300,000 new homes, including affordable homes, to be built every year. The Government has also abolished stamp duty completely for first time buyers on homes up to £300,000. A further £28 million will be spent on tackle homelessness and rough sleeping. Championing Apprenticeships and Education I was delighted to be invited to the ground breaking of Harlow College’s new Airport Technical College, which will offer training in everything from aircraft and airport engineering to hospitality and customer service and will open later this year. It will provide fantastic opportunities for young people in Harlow and the villages who will be able to get the education and skills they need to get jobs, security and prosperity for their futures. I will continue my work in Harlow and as Chair of the Education Select Committee to champion apprenticeships and education to get the best futures for our young people. Cutting the Cost of Living I was very pleased with the Chancellor’s Budget announced at the end of last year. The National Living Wage is increasing to £7.83, meaning that since its introduction, the living wage will have boosted the income of the lowest paid by

£2,000 a year. The Tax-Free Personal Allowance is increasing again as well to £11,850 meaning a typical Harlow worker pays £1,075 less income tax than they did in 2010. As well as this, fuel duty will remain frozen for the eighth consecutive year meaning the average Harlow motorist is £850 better off since 2010 - and the average Harlow van driver has saved over £2000. There will also be a new railcard for those aged 26-30 meaning more young people in Harlow will get a third off their rail fares and commute. Protecting our NHS The Government announced an extra £10 billion would be spent to upgrade hospital buildings and facilities and I will continue working hard to make sure that Harlow gets its share of this new money for the new hospital we need. I have also been running a campaign to abolish hospital car parking charges and recently bought forward a Bill in parliament to achieve this. It will be debated again in the House of Commons in the New Year. Brexit means Brexit I’m pleased that we are making good progress in the Brexit talks. Before Christmas, our Prime Minister signed a deal that means there will be no hard boarder in Northern Island; EU citizens living here and Brits living in the EU will have their rights protected; and British courts will have control back over our own laws. Very best wishes, Robert

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

SNOW IN STANSTED A windmill, a wooded nature reserve with lakes, and some great pubs and cafés make Stansted a great place to stroll. With your back to the railway station, turn left along Water Lane, parallel with railway. At the end, turn right uphill to find the windmill. From mill, turn right and fork left, along Recreation Ground, then right again down Chapel Road back towards station. Turn left onto Lower Street and keep straight. Fork right past Dog and Duck pub. Keep on along wooded lane and straight on fenced path beyond. Follow path on around left hand edge of field. Turn left at arrow and follow path in this direction to reach lane eventually. Turn right on lane. When lane veers left, keep straight on track to find entrance for Aubrey Buxton Nature Reserve. Go right through gate and follow path as it leads right past ponds, keeping water on your right. This lovely wood was once the landscaped park of a grand house nearby. Follow path out of nature reserve at far end and continue in same direction, eventually heading back around edge of field to return to Stansted Mountfichet. LOCATION:

Our chosen charity Streets2homes

Thank you! Words by Kerrie Eastman, Chief Operations Officer S2H

The year has gone really quickly – it has been great being CM Connection charity of the year and we are sad this is our last month but glad another worthy organisation will benefit from CM Connection and its readers support. We hope you have enjoyed learning more about Streets2Homes and the work we do. We have certainly enjoyed getting to know some of you better. We have received great support from many of you over the past year and even a few visits – including the Chair of Sawbridgeworth and District Rotary Club with his wife and a donation from the club for which we were very grateful. We have also been introduced to the Women in Business Networking (WIBN) group whose members have been a fantastic support and we will continue to work with. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us over the past year. If you would like to support us in the future we always welcome donations of clothes, toiletries and of course donations through local.giving. com. You can also support us and have the chance to win £25k every week with the Essex Lottery we receive half the proceeds of all tickets sold supporting Streets2Homes.

We will be very busy over the coming months as the colder weather is upon us, we will be providing a Severe Weather Provision when temperatures are zero degrees or below for three consecutive nights in addition to coordinating the churches winter provision throughout January and February (If you are interested in being involved please contact Kerrie Eastman) We will be working hard over the next year to develop an accommodation project to reduce the number sleeping on the streets – if you see someone sleeping rough please signpost them to Streets2Homes or contact us and we can visit them, please do not regularly give them money and provisions as this often prevents them accessing services to overcome their issues and situation that can help them in the long term. Thank you once again to all at CM Connection especially the wonderful Lorraine Perry and we wish you all a very Happy 2018!

The Gallery at Parndon Mill

modern landscapes The first exhibition for 2018 in The Gallery at Parndon Mill is of colourful paintings and watercolours by David Quantrill. These are vivid, unique and thought evoking works of art, pushing the boundaries of paint on canvas. The subject matter is often irrelevant, based on visual experience, or perhaps through reading material or even the spoken word or a thought. Many times a title precedes the work thus becoming a starting point, many of the ideas developing by just putting paint on canvas. The paintings are complemented by equally colourful ceramics by Sarah Crickmore. She particularly likes the unpredictable and vibrant results that can be achieved with the raku process and the contrast between the bright crackled glazes and the carbonated unglazed clay body. She often incorporates texture to the clay surface or geometric resist patterns when applying the glaze to give a definite design element. However due to the nature of raku each piece will be unique.

Canine Capers at Winter walkies 2018

Puppy love is in the air at St Clare Hospice as registration officially opens for the charity’s annual Winter Walkies event. The 5k pooch parade will be taking place at the Hastingwood-based hospice on Sunday 25th February 2018 and more than 300 walkers and their furry friends are expected to support the fundraiser. St Clare Hospice’s Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, is organising the event and said: “This year marks the 12th time the Hospice has hosted the event and it is as popular as ever! The 2017 walk saw a record-breaking 350 owners and their dogs take part, and we are hoping even more people register for 2018.” Emma continued: “Anyone is welcome to join us on this rural route across the beautiful Essex countryside – whether you are a dog owner or not. Just remember your wellies as it is likely there will be plenty of muddy feet and paws. It is such a great event – you’d be barking mad to miss it!” As part of the event’s launch the hospice is once again hosting their ever-popular ‘Cutest Canine Competition’ – and the charity is calling on local pet-owners to enter their favourite photograph of their pet to win a hamper of doggy goodies and the chance to officially start the Winter Walkies event.

Registration costs £10 for adults and £5 for children, which includes a free soup, dog rosette and certificates for children. Walkers can also sign up on the day. Please be aware that the route is not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. This year’s event is kindly sponsored by Epping-based vets, Forest Veterinary Centre. St Clare Could Your Perfect Pooch Be St Clare’s Cutest Canine? Is your pooch positively perfect? Is your dog dazzling? Is your cuddly companion the cutest? Is your furry friend the fairest of them all? Then why not enter them into St Clare Hospice’s Cutest Canine Competition. The Hastingwood-based charity is searching for a handsome hound or pretty pup to officially launch its annual 5km Winter Walkies countryside walk taking place on Sunday 25th February 2018. The winner will also receive a hamper of doggy goodies and the coveted title of St Clare’s Cutest Canine! St Clare Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, said: “We have been running the doggy photo competition as part of our Winter Walkies event for the past 4 years and have had an overwhelming response. Last year’s contest really captured the imagination of our animal-loving supporters, who cast hundreds of votes to make Poppy, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier from Church Langley, the overall winner.” Emma continued: “We know how much people love their pets, so this year we hope the competition will be just as successful and we can’t wait to see which top dog will be voted St Clare’s Cutest Canine.” All you need to do to enter the competition is: 1. Register for the Winter Walkies event at www.stclarehospice.org.uk/event/winterwalkies 2. Email a picture of your marvelous mutt and a brief description of your pet (including name, breed and age) to fund@ stclarehospice.org.uk by 12noon on Friday 19th January 2018 to go forward to the public vote.

3. Encourage your friends and family to vote for your pet when the gallery of all the competition entrants is published on the St Clare Facebook page on Monday 22nd January 2018. The dog that receives the most ‘Likes’ when voting closes at 12noon on Friday 26th January 2018 will be named the winner. The winning dog and their owner will be invited to officially launch the Winter Walkies event on Sunday 25th February 2018 at 11am, and will also receive a hamper of doggy goodies. LOCALs that launch: Local Kung Fu Master, Sifu Chris Matthews launches the Fatshan Puma Wing Chun School in Harlow this month. Practised by the likes of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Robert Downy Jnr and Michelle Yeoh read on to find out more about this efficient and effective martial art...

When did you set up Fatshan Puma Wing Chun? We’re starting right now. January 2018, although I’ve been training and teaching for 28 years this year. What is Wing Chun Kung Fu? Wing Chun is one of a set of traditional Chinese martial arts. It dates back about 300 years and was designed from the start to be a formidable fighting art. It can be studied as a self defence system that has tremendous capability in the modern world, or simply as a means to get fit and improve one’s general health. So what makes it such an effective self defence system? Wing Chun does away with anything that might be superfluous to the aim of defending oneself and protecting one’s health. There are no high kicks or flashy moves and we focus on using speed alone and technique to defeat an attacker. Legend has it that it was developed by a woman specifically to defeat bigger, heavier men so it’s particularly well suited to women and children as well.

www.fatshanpuma.co.uk

And what other health benefits does it offer? As with most other martial arts, Wing Chun will improve your overall fitness, flexibility co-ordination and balance. We also focus on relaxation and calmness (particularly under pressure) so it can be very beneficial in managing stress and related conditions. Plus it’s great fun! What is a typical class like? Normally a class lasts around 2 hours. We will start with some warm up to make sure everyone is loose and getting in the right mental state, then we will probably move onto class technique where the entire class will practice a variety of techniques (usually in the air) at the same time. This allows the students to focus on their technique without distraction, and of course lets me see in a group who is developing and who may need more guidance. These drills will include punching, kicking, blocking and other techniques. Once everyone is alert and ready to learn, we will usually split the class into different groups so they can practice techniques appropriate to their Where: Paringdon Sports Club Paringdon Road Harlow CM19 4QT When: Mondays 7-9pm

level (and which they will need to demonstrate for their next grading). This will be done under the guidance of a senior student and usually between students of the same level. Normally at the end of a class we will do some more free form and sparring activity where the students from all levels have the opportunity to train together. The class normally finishes with questions and answers and a group execution of one of the forms of Wing Chun to round things off. That sounds hard! Do you have to be really fit? Not at all! In fact when I started training I weighed over 20 stone! There is an old saying that you don’t need to be fit to fight, and this is very true. All we ask is that people do what they can, and try to do a little more each session.

All of the exercises can be adapted for people that are less able, so it really is not an issue at all. We welcome everyone of all levels. What is your background? I work in IT but Wing Chun is really my passion. I’m just looking to share it. I’m part of that generation that saw Bruce Lee and the old Golden Harvest movies when I was growing up and was hooked from there on. How should potential students get in touch? Really simple, all my contact details are at the bottom of the page or you can just turn up Parringdon Sports Club. How much do classes cost? Your first class is free! We’ll give you a taster session of Wing Chun. You can see the people involved and decide if you want to take it further. As this is a new school we’re offering a discounted first two months (At £30 per month), which will be extended to three months for anyone paying in advance. We also offer discounts for concessions and family groups. As if that’s not enough, you can also train at our sister school in Chelmsford. That’s unlimited training, for as many classes as you can get to. (Right now it’ll be 6 hours per week, but we’re looking to increase that further as the year goes on.)

and another welcoming in the old new year By Tom Hughes @groomsdaybook

The Old Paraffin Lamp: a dusty, gloomy boozer tucked away behind a derelict industrial estate. A scruffy hole frequented by crumpled, lonely old souls, desperately in need of a makeover. (I meant the pub, not the customers. Then again…) But how Nigel and I loved it. My old chum and I had frequented this hostelry for years and it was, I suppose, always going to be the perfect venue for the bombshell Nigel was about to drop. “Tom, I’ve got something to tell you. You know me and Val have been seeing each other for a while?” “Her ex-husband isn’t going to punch you again, is he Nige?” “The thing is neither of us getting any younger. And…well I’ve decided to pop the question.” Marriage? My heart sank. “Listen, Nige, old chum. Have a serious think about it. Is she really the girl for you?” “Too late, Tom. I proposed last week. And she accepted.” Immediately I slammed into reverse gear. “Well congratulations! I was wondering when you’d make an honest woman of her. This really is the most marvellous news!” I said through gritted teeth. Immediate thoughts of pool games postponed, quiz nights dipped out of - all sorts of catastrophic, life changing events. But if the shock of this momentous news wasn’t enough, the beatific smile that now played on Nigel’s lips heralded an even more horrendous revelation.

26

“And of course I’m going to need a best man.” The watery look in his eyes indicated a request was imminent - one from which there was no escape. All I could do was grimace and wait for the words to tumble from his mouth. “Tom, mate. Will you be my best man?” Well, what could I say? The poor man had been struck over the head by Cupid’s bow and was now lost to everything we both held so dear. And now I too was being sucked into the madness - totally and utterly against my will. “Nige, it would be an absolute honour.” Managing to dodge an unwelcome man hug by extending my hand, we shook on it. And then it began. “Val wants to get married in a castle.” A pause as l slowly placed my pint pot down onto the table that had served us well for so many years. The fightback had started, and I was leading the charge. “Listen here Sir Lancelot, if you don’t watch it, by the end of this process, you’ll be friendless, potless and…” But it was pointless. Talking over me, he embarked upon a garrulous soliloquy espousing the wondrous benefits of getting hitched. Like no one had ever done it before. It was only when he moved onto table

thing... decorations that I put a stop to it. “Nigel! Have you heard yourself? Table decorations? What in the name of thunder are you babbling on about?” Nigel threw his nose in the direction of the dartboard. “Val said you’d be like this.” Fearing I had overstepped the mark, I placed a conciliatory hand on his shoulder. “Look, mate, if you want to talk to me about table decorations, you go ahead.” Nigel’s shoulders sagged as, slowly, the pretence began to fade. Through pained eyes he said, “Val says I’ve got to find little bottles to put jelly beans into.” Stifling a smirk, in the least patronising manner possible I said, “Nige old chum, if we need to find you some jelly beans, then jelly

beans we shall find.” But I knew my Old Pal, I could tell there was something else. My usual tactic was to sit quietly and wait. I wasn’t wrong. After a pause Nigel said. “Tom, I’m going to have to give up our Monday nights.” Incensed, I said, “Why?” “Zumba classes.” My head fell into my hands. Now it was Nigel’s turn to comfort me. “Don’t worry Tom, it won’t be for ever. And of course, it’s your job to organise the stag.” Suddenly, things didn’t seem so terrible. “OK Nige, you go the bar and I’ll peel off the back of this beer mat. Now, pass me a pen - this is going to take some organising!” To be continued…

history welcoming in the old new year By Catherine Rose

As we bring in 2018 with toasts, fireworks and a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne, it’s perhaps worth remembering that New Year has been a bit of a moveable feast. It is not written in stone that New Year be celebrated on 1st January. With the now wellknown and colourful carnival that takes place in London, most of us are familiar with the Chinese New Year that takes place a few weeks after our own. But did you know that some people in Europe also mark the start of New Year a little later than we do? The 2018 Chinese New Year will take place on 16th February, which is the 23rd day of the twelfth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. A national holiday in China, celebrations feature processions with drums, Chinese dragons, firecrackers to ward off evil spirits, and decorations in signature red for good luck, including banners and Chinese lanterns. The Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival, and celebrations which mark the end of winter and the start of a new crop year have been common since the pagan era, when New Year was traditionally observed on 22nd March at the time of the vernal equinox. Today, in common with the rest of Europe and most of the world, we all use the Gregorian calendar originally set up by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Europe universally adopted this calendar in the 18th century, although Russia was behind, changing over to it in 1918 after the Bolshevik Revolution. Previously, the older Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 46BC, had been observed. According to this calendar, New Year’s Day falls in the middle of January, after the end of the Advent fast. The Russian Orthodox Church continues to abide by the Julian calendar and although it is not recognised as a national holiday, the ‘Old New Year’ is still celebrated by Orthodox Christians

30

in central and eastern Europe on 13th and 14th January. These countries include Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Montenegro, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Macedonia, and Serbia (as well as in Greece), comprising Orthodox Christians across countries that together once formed the USSR, where celebrating the Old New Year had previously been banned by the Communist regime. 14th January also coincides with St Basil’s Day, and the festival is marked with feasting, bonfires and fireworks. In Macedonia, people gather outside their houses to share food and drink and to sing traditional songs. It is customary to eat unleavened (pita) bread with a coin inside (or dumplings with a hidden charm in Russia). Much like our Christmas pudding tradition, whoever finds the coin will have good luck for the New Year. And in Serbia, the Church puts on firework displays. The customary feast includes a range of pork dishes in the hope of securing a good farming year, the traditional St Basil celebratory dinner being a whole roasted pig. Another St Basil’s day morning tradition has been to eat ceremonial porridge that has been cooked overnight by the oldest woman in the house. The porridge would be prepared and put into the oven in the early hours of New Year’s Eve (13th), and the condition of the porridge the following morning would signify whether the year was to be a good one or not. Thick crusted porridge was auspicious, but thin pale porridge or a cracked pot spelled disaster for the household. Observing New Year in the middle of January

Fun & Leisure

is not uncommon and other countries across the world have their equivalents. Berber tribes in North Africa (Morocco and Libya) mark New Year according to the Berber calendar, which roughly coincides with the Julian one. India also celebrates at this time, following the perceived change in the sun’s path from south to north, in a festival known as Makar Sankranti. And parts of Switzerland see in New Year under the umbrella of St Sylvester’s Day. It can be said that no one knows how to welcome in New Year like the Scots but although Scottish Hogmanay on the eve of 31st December is perhaps the most famous revelry of the New Year, the old Gaelic custom was to welcome New Year on 12th January. In Wales, this is still known as Hen Galan, and there are traditional Welsh songs associated with it that are sung today. The Gaelic year was broken up into quarters: earrach (spring), samhradh (summer), foghar (autumn) and geamhradh (winter), each marked by its own feast day. A few parts of Scotland

continue to celebrate the Old New Year, known as Oidhche Chullaig or Oidhche Challainn where children would traditionally visit each home in their village reciting a Gaelic New Year blessing while carrying a caisein-uchd – a torch made from the breast bone of a sheep dipped in tallow. Used to light the householder’s fire, it was then handed around to each member of the family who had to circle it above their head three times for luck. Unfortunately for some, if the flame died, it meant that the person would not live to see the New Year out! In Burghead in the Moray Firth, residents continue to celebrate Old New Year with the ‘burning of the clavie’ – a torch made of barrel staves, which is lit on the evening of 11th January. January can often be a cold and dispiriting month following on from our Christmas and New Year festivities, so perhaps celebrating the ‘Old New Year’ in the middle of it isn’t such a bad idea after all.

1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the chorizo sausage for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently until browned. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Harlow Chorus The New Year brings an unexpected change Words by Mick Rumens

The chorus had a very busy December with another very enjoyable Family Christmas Concert at St John’s, Epping. and a fundraising Carol Concert at Copped Hall. We also provided a group of singers at St Clare Hospice, and at Down Hall on Christmas Eve. Sadly, December also brought the news that our brilliant accompanist, Sue Graham-Smith, will no longer be able to provide her support as she has now moved to West Sussex to be nearer to her elderly parents, and has obtained a position with Arun Choral Society who often perform in Arundal Cathedral. Sue has been our regular rehearsal pianist for the last 25 years and also for many of our concerts over those years. Many of our regular supporters will remember too her wonderful solos in many of those concerts. She often ‘stepped into the breach’ when one of our musical directors was unexpectedly

unable to attend rehearsal and she was a very accomplished choir director, and vocal coach. She had been Assistant Musical Director for Cantate Youth Choir (Sainsbury Children’s Choir of the Year 2000). She has coached over 50 operas and has been Opera Coach at Trinity College of Music, an Examiner for the Associated Board, as well as Pianist for Cantabile and Hertfordshire Chorus. She was also accompanist for the Hertford Choral Society and music director a St Michael & All Angels Church, Berkhamsted. Sue will be missed by all our past and, especially, present members, not to mention many of our supporters who, over all those years, have come to appreciate her remarkable talent. We have yet to engage a replacement for her, but we all wish her the very best for the future.
