WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO The April edition of the cm17 connection As I type it is absolutely glorious out there - blue, cloudless skies. My daughter has come home from school, red-cheeked and puffed out from the heat and walking - feeling proud that she’s managed to beat her 19-minute record. I, on the other hand have been limited to admiring the spring weather from afar - well from my window, to be exact. To make matters worse, my “step” count is dire (yep, I am a slave to my Fitbit!). On the weeks that I go to print, I’m lucky if I make 2 or 3 thousand steps - way off the recommended 10k steps a day. I’ll have to make up for it tomorrow... What’s the betting it rains (smiles!). Suffice it to say, this edition is a full one! I’ve just about managed to squeeze everyone in, which I’m really pleased about. It feels like everyone is really busying for the spring/summer. We have open days, exhibitions, music, theatre, community events, quizzes and lots and lots of Easter events to look forward too... so much!

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear residents, Happy Birthday Harlow - The Best Town In Britain! Our town is populated by the best. We have an award winning college, world renowned Henry Moore sculptures, Parndon Mill, beautiful green spaces, and we are the inventors of fibre optic communications. But, more important than all of this, are the people. It can be easy to lose sight through difficult times, but Harlow is populated by kind, decent and tolerant people. I get to meet them every day. We are entrepreneurial, hardworking, family focused - people that don’t make newspaper headlines but just want to make our town and the world a better place. Though a large town, we have the community spirit of a village. Everyone knows each other and we pull together, both when it is needed and when it is not. We are very lucky to have organisations such as Heart for Harlow, Streets2Homes and PACT for Autism, amongst many more, all making our town a better place. Though great already, I’m excited for the even brighter future that Harlow has to look forward to. We’ve already seen the development of an Enterprise Zone with a constant flow of business, jobs and apprenticeships coming back to our town. Soon we will have Public Health England here too, which will transform Harlow and make us literally the public health science capital of the world. It is important that we have the housing and infrastructure to go with this. We are receiving

millions of pounds of Government funding to improve our roads and the new homes that will be built in ‘Harlow North’ will provide much needed housing for our young people so we can continue to prosper and fulfil our massive potential. My family owned the John Walton clothes shop in our town centre from the 50s to the 80s, where the Citizens Advice Bureau has now found its home. I moved to Harlow myself in 1999 and I have never felt more at home anywhere else. I recently welcomed the relative that owned this shop back to our town and I was proud to share how much we have grown and transformed over the years. It is a pleasure and honour to serve as your MP. When Harlow was built 70 years ago, it transformed the lives of thousands of people. We are a place of aspiration, opportunity and achievement. Now, as we celebrate the anniversary of our town, we have the potential to do the same again. This is our renaissance. Best wishes, Robert

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Bluebells in Bergholt There are bluebell woods all over Hertfordshire and Essex so it might seem silly to drive for an hour to West Bergholt near Colchester, but it’s worth it. Hillhouse Wood is small but perfectly formed with flowering valleys and clear steams, nightingales, woodpeckers, patches of wild garlic and – of course – bluebells. For a short, sweet walk take the path from end of Firmins Court across fields to St Mary’s old church just outside West Bergholt village. The church is open every day and serves tea and cakes to visitors for an annual “Bluebell Weekend” in April. Take lane beside church and follow it left to wood’s main entrance. There are many paths through Hillhouse, where getting lost in May is a pleasure; one scenic route is to fork left near pond, through valley, and follow any way-marked path through woods until all ways converge to cross two little bridges and climb up to gate in SE corner of wood. Follow path ahead along edge of field. Reaching brick cottage, follow Cooks Hall Road past paddocks towards West Bergholt. Turn left at crossroads and go on over Lexden Road to find the unpretentious Queen’s Head pub, reflected in the village pond. LOCATION: West Bergholt Distance: About 3 miles refreshments:

Gatehouse arts exhibition

An exhibition of new paintings by Chris Lewis-Smith

The paintings in this exhibition are about colour, and about how I am affected by these colours and about how the paintings communicate a reaction to these colours to the viewer. There is nothing subtle about some of the colours I have used in these paintings. They often are in your face colours. They are often loud colours. They are colours that want to be noticed. There are some darker paintings and I hope the darker colours take the viewer to a place where I first saw them: in reflections, moon rises and dark winter afternoons. Hope you enjoy them!

Mike Danvers and EUGENIE HARVEY getting things done for the residents of CM17 This month, Mike Danvers who is seeking reelection to Essex County Council to represent residents of Harlow North (Old Harlow and New Hall), answers questions from Eugenie Harvey, Labour’s candidate for Harlow South East (Church Langley and Potter Street). Mike, why are you seeking re-election to the County Council? I would like to carry on representing the local community at Chelmsford. I’ve made a real difference to this community and people’s lives. For example I was able to persuade the Council to build the new primary school in Newhall as they seemed to be dragging their feet and I took the lead on getting the Old Harlow library reopened as quickly as possible after the fire when it was facing closure. And to people’s lives? On a whole number of fronts… I’ve successfully represented parents who were unable to get the school of their first choice at appeals. I’ve ensured elderly members of the community who needed enhanced care got it and found places in residential homes when required. I even managed to resolve a major parking issue for those working at Templefield which made huge a difference. So your experience can open doors for individuals? I would like to think so. My door is always open. I know from my case work - from telephone calls to emails and people turning up at my bureau, just how important it is to have a local representative who cares. People always get a reply from me.

And I know you’ve lead the campaign against the Gilden Way development… The Conservatives at Chelmsford have been determined to impose this scheme on a very unhappy community. We hear how angry people are that their views have not been taken into account every weekend when we’re out canvassing. I’ve done my best at every opportunity to oppose the proposal to expand Gilden Way. It will cause disruption and misery for many years. It’s just so unfair that local opinion has been ignored in such a cavalier way. What do you find most difficult about being a county councillor? Sometimes finding time to take my Jack Russell for a walk. But I always make time, rain or shine.

Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way. Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of them suffering from arthritis. What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. These are some of the indicators to watch out for: • Stiffness when your dog gets up, or after a walk.

www.firstclasscareagency.co.uk

• They walk with a limp, even if only for a few minutes. • Your cat’s reluctance to jump on your knee.

• Your rabbit being less inclined to run around its cage. It can be particularly difficult to notice the signs of arthritis in a rabbit, as one of the ways they survive in the wild is to move less when they’re injured, so as not to appear vulnerable. Is there anything you can do to prevent joint problems in your pet? As far as puppies are concerned, it’s important not to over-exercise them while their bodies are still developing. Being overweight will also have a huge impact on your pet’s joints, so watching food intake is a key factor. The vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory if your pet has severe joint pain, or glucosamine and chondroitin, as these are supplements known to help with mobility.

LOCALs that launch: Tucked away in a barn in the grounds of the Horns & Horseshoes Pub in Foster Street lies a hitherto hidden gem. Lolina’s Interiors is a veritable treasure trove of shabby chic home furnishings. If you like modern, glitz, glamour with a dash of sparkle, this outlet is for you! We spoke to owner Nina Sacco to find out more...

How long has Lolina’s Interiors been open? The store has been open for just over a year now. Courtney Roke is our store manager and is an asset to the firm. How did you decide on your company name? My sister and I are twins, her name is Louise and mine is Nina so I put the two together and created “Lolina’s”. What made you start the business? I’ve always had a passion for interiors and anyone that came to my house would say that I should do interior design and it started from there. The Next thing I knew I’d found a location and hired Courtney. We work really well together and have a lovely customer base with lots of repeat customers; we really enjoy what we do. What’s your experience in Business? I have another business that I have been running for the past 4 years called Blingderella. It’s a crystal company which specialises in crystallising celebrities’ shoes. We’ve customised shoes for the likes of Joey Essex all the way up to Justin Bieber! What can we expect to find at Lolina’s? We stock all aspects of home ware and furniture including bespoke sofas made to your very own specification (much like Sofa Design and made to the same standard with a 10 year warranty). We stock

We are also giftware stockists of Disney and Willow Tree figures and stock Sandy Bay candles. What to expect when you visit? A very warm welcome from either Courtney or myself. We are passionate about helping our customers find the ideal furniture for their homes, whether it is a new sofa or the perfect lamp to go with their bedside table! It’s also such a pleasure helping people choose gifts in our giftware department. Is there anything else that you’d like to tell us? freshwaters contact centre

providing a safe and neutral contact point for families in harlow Words by Ron Kingsmill

Freshwaters Contact Centre (FCC) is a registered charity established to enable contact between children and their non-resident family member/s. FCC has been doing this successfully in Harlow since it started in 1994 and has seen thousands of children establish or re-establish those vital relationships. We provide a safe neutral meeting place where children can meet with parents, grandparents or siblings that they have been separated from because of family breakdown. We operate one session a week on a Saturday morning, providing Supported Contact, which is defined as: • Offering low vigilance support • There will be several families at a time in the rooms • The volunteers and staff keep a watchful eye (in each room and particularly at the reception and main entrances/exits) • Conversations are not monitored • As a general rule no reports are made except dates of attendance We also offer a space for ‘handovers’ – where children are ‘handed over’ at the centre but the nonresidents parent/grandparent are able to take the child/ren out of the centre and either hand back at the centre at the end of the session – or hand back to the resident parent in the community. Families stay with us for as long as they need us. We often find that, after a few months with us, the parents feel able to arrange handovers outside the centre, and so move on from us. We are always pleased when this happens.

We assist children and parents, grandparents and siblings who are separated because of relationship breakdown and have no other viable way of meeting together to maintain and develop their relationship. Families are referred to the Centre for a number of different reasons, including: • Where concern has been expressed about the visiting parent’s ability to care for a child during contact. • When non-resident parent and child have not met for some time and uncertainty exists as to successful re-establishment of contact. • Where there is a need for trained volunteers on hand to provide assistance and reassurance to both children and parents. • Where a child lives with foster parents and a neutral venue for contact is required. • Where the contact parent has nowhere suitable to take the child. • Where parents cannot meet without friction – a Centre can ensure that they do not meet and can regulate the introduction of third parties to the contact arrangements. If you would like to know more about how FCC might be able to help you, or how you could support this vital work in Harlow then visit www. freshwaterscontact.org.uk.

The only way we can help is if those families who could benefit from our service hear about us – so we would be very grateful if you could spread the work to others by liking and sharing our Facebook page www.facebook.com/FreshwatersCC.

The teenage years can be extremely difficult. I am sure you remember what it was like to be a teenager. You feel like you are the only one, like no one else understands and are often hounded by feelings of insecurity. Imagine how much worse this would be if you could not live with your family. How would you feel? At this critical time in their lives these young adults need guidance, support and understanding, to help them not to get involved in bad behaviours and lifestyles. Teenagers need carers who are reliable, patient and trustworthy; they need to know where they stand. Foster carers need to listen, be someone to talk to and help them to make sense of their worries. Could you help? If you think you can please get in touch with us. We will answer all of your questions and provide you with all the help, support and training that you need. Together we can make a massive difference to a teenager’s life!

Our chosen charity streets2homes

Sleep out 2017: Awareness and annual fundraising event Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes Every year in spring we hold our annual fundraising event. It’s a SLEEP OUT designed to raise awareness and funds for the Streets2Homes day centre for the homeless and vulnerably housed. We assist by helping with meeting basic needs and support to rebuild lives by accessing accommodation and improving opportunities. This year’s event is taking place on 26th May and will take place in the church grounds of St Marys-atLatton, Harlow, CM20 2JP. All monies raised will go to Streets2Homes to support the homeless in Harlow and those that come to us from the surrounding area. Unlike so many who find themselves on the streets, we have the luxury of being able to plan our Sleepout and make sure that we have all the provisions we need. We’ve drawn together a simple fact sheet about the event, to answer some questions should you wish to take part. When does it start? The event starts at 9.30pm and will finish with a hot breakfast at 6.30am in the church hall. Who can take part? Anyone over 18, anyone over 12 as long as a responsible adult who is present, supervises them and they also have their parent’s or guardian’s consent. What to do before the event: Please register by calling Streets2Homes 01279 430011 or by emailing me at kerrie.eastman@streets2homes.co.uk Find some people to sponsor you for an amount of money. What to bring: Your registration form and your sponsorship form so that we can stamp to certify completion on Saturday morning. A sleeping bag or bags and blankets - bring more rather than

less! Wear warm clothing – layer up! Some like a cardboard-box (waterproofed) for over their head & a sleeping mat. A waterproof groundsheet or heavy plastic that goes both under & over you - vital! What not to bring: Pets, a tent, a football, valuables & CDs, mp3’s or alcohol! Timetable: 9.30-10.30pm - refreshments and introductions, 10.30-11pm - out to sleep, or the church will be open for prayer from 10.30 to 11pm. Parking: There is ample parking around the church people park on the grassed areas around the church. But please, if possible, avoid parking outside people’s homes in The Gowers. There is also plenty of parking in Muskham Road leading to The Gowers. What happens overnight? You sleep in the grounds. Toilets will be open all night. Security will patrol. What happens the next morning? You get up from 6.30am onwards, get your sponsorship form stamped, and, if you wish, have something to eat and drink, a breakfast will be provided. Remove cardboard etc. Leave nothing behind. Then go to a cosy home!! What to do after that: Talk with friends and family about the experience, tell them about Streets2homes and collect your sponsorship money. This event is not for everybody but you can still support us by following the live Facebook streams that we share as the night unfolds. Most importantly we would like your sponsorship, there is no minimum amount, every single penny is most gratefully received. We understand that a local CM23 Magazine publisher will be taking part or you may know someone else to sponsor. We also have a Local Giving page - https://localgiving.org/charity/s2h/ where donations can be made online.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING RICOTTA STUFFED CHICKEN

75g ricotta cheese 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 2 tsp finely grated lemon zest 4 large skinless chicken breast fillets 12 thin-cut rashers streaky bacon 5 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 1tsp Dijon mustard Pinch of sugar

This

recipe is a great way to turn chicken

fillets into something special.

You

can

prepare them a couple of hours in advance

100g baby spinach leaves

and keep covered in the fridge, then simply

2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

cook when needed.

1. Use a sharp knife to make a deep pocket in each chicken fillet, making sure not to cut right the way through. Place the ricotta cheese in a bowl and stir in the thyme leaves and the lemon zest. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. Place one-quarter of the ricotta mixture in the pocket of each chicken fillet. Use the back of a knife to stretch the bacon rashers. Wrap 3 rashers around each chicken fillet and secure with a metal skewer. Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C Fan, Gas Mark 4. 3. Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken fillets over high heat for 2-3 minutes until the bacon is browned, turning once. Transfer to a roasting tin and cook for 35-40 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Cover and leave in a warm place to rest for 10 minutes. 4. To make the dressing, whisk the remaining oil with the vinegar, mustard and sugar in a small jug and season to taste. Slice each chicken fillet into 6 pieces and arrange on the salad leaves. Scatter over the toasted pine nuts and spoon over the dressing. Serve immediately.

TIP: Instead of ricotta you could use low-fat soft cheese such as

Philadelphia or a mild and creamy goats’ cheese.

Harlow Chorus St Michael’s Church, Bishops StorTford Saturday 15th July Words by Mick Rumens

Our final concert of the current season will be held at St Michael’s commencing 7.30pm on the above date. The programme will be A Summer Prom of English Chorale Favourites with a traditional Last Night finale. The chorus will be accompanied by Sue Graham Smith, on piano, and for this concert we will be conducted by Peter Broadbent. The process of interviewing and auditioning a shortlist for a new permanent Musical Director will commence in earnest with the closure of applications at the end of March. Many of our readers will be aware that Harlow will celebrate its 70th birthday on Saturday 2nd July and we will be performing some of our programme in the Harlow Museum Gardens on that day. On the concert programme will be Handel’s glorious Zadok the Priest, Elgar’s famous work From the Bavarian Highlands, John Rutter’s Birthday Madrigals, and Part-songs and Folk-songs by Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Sullivan and Grainger. We will be sharing the day with

many other groups from within the town so exactly which pieces we will be performing in our 20 minute ‘slot’ has not yet been decided. Obviously, if you can come along and support us on 15th July you can enjoy the whole programme. We have been invited to collaborate with Saffron Waldon Choral Society in a major concert next November, in a performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem at the Saffron Waldon Concert Hall. This will be staged on Saturday 11th November, so I urge you to put this in your diary now. Our President, Sarah TennentFlowers and graciously agreed to prepare us for this very special concert. I will have more information concerning our July concert in the May edition, but we would be very happy to welcome any new singers who would like to join us for our July concert or our new season September 2017/July 2018.

Ash Valley quilters

6th exhibition by Jackie Nash

Our quilt group started in 1996 and we meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 7.30 to 9.30pm at the Memorial Hall in Sawbridgeworth (next to the library) where we have professional speakers on patchwork related topics, practical workshops and other events throughout the year. We run patchwork classes for beginners and workshops on more complicated techniques for the more experienced quilter, so the group covers a wide range of expertise. At our exhibition, we will have lots of quilts, bags and other items on display, all made by our members. We will also have a sales table with small quilts, handmade fabric items such as toys, bags, storage items, and lots more; a trader selling fabrics and haberdashery, a book and magazine stall, a charity raffle (the first prize is the quilt on the right), tombola, demonstrations of quilting techniques, and tea and cake, all for a £3.50 entry fee (children free). There is disabled access and plenty of parking available nearby. There will be lots to interest everyone, whether you are a keen quilter, just like to admire what others make or perhaps buy some gifts at the same time. 01279 426966

The Henry Moore Primary School The Pirates are Here! At Henry Moore the Year 2 Pirate topic came to a fabulous end with a ‘Yo ho ho!’ as the children performed an end of topic assembly to their parents and carers. The assembly was a fantastic way to show off exactly what the children had learned and how they had enjoyed an enriched curriculum through pleasure and having fun. The children sang pirate ‘sea shanties’ and danced the ‘hornpipe’ whilst explaining what they had learnt during the topic ‘Pirates’. They learnt about famous explorers, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong within their history curriculum, and the seven seas and continents across the world within geography. As well as this the children have been learning about co-ordinates and positional language in maths whilst searching for buried treasure with mapping skills. The children really enjoyed finding out about famous pirates in English learning all about Blackbeard and Anne Bonny. To further enhance their learning, we took the children to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, where they came face to face with a real pirate, and found out what life was like aboard a pirate ship. The Year 2 children at Henry Moore love this topic and take so many treasured memories from it.
