THE
WELCOME
CM21
HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE January edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION I do hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are now looking forward to the possibilities that every New Year brings. I, for one, love this time of year! (To be honest, I look forward to each and every season!) It’s a time when many of us take the opportunity to sit down and think about our plans for the year - holidays to be booked, habits to be broken and perhaps new ones to be started. Whatever your plans, however big or small I wish you every success and remember, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step...”. And with the New Year comes the opportunity to introduce you to new businesses, features and articles within the magazine. I’d like to welcome new & returning advertisers: David Jones - High Quality Home Maintenance, Jacqueline Cayford - Foot Health Professional, N.L.A Private Home Care, Airport Lettings, Simply Fit, Spectrum Family Law, Hunter Studio, The Personal Property Shop and Viking Solar. Unfortunately, operational duties prevented an inclusion from our local Police this month but I am delighted to be able to include articles from SMHT, Central surgery and Diane Le Count - thank you for getting in touch. As always, don’t forget the Community Pages, What’s On and Listings are all free of charge to local groups and charitable organisations - if that’s you, do please get in touch, tell us about yourself and/or an event that may be coming. It really is our pleasure to be able to include it for you.

property column is now the right time to sell your home?
Marketing your property at the right time of year can have a big part to play in how quickly you sell it. Even in the competitive Bishop’s Stortford area, market it at the wrong time of year and you risk your property sitting out there for weeks, with your estate agent not receiving a single call. Once it’s been on the market for a while then people start to wonder ‘what’s wrong with it?’ Launch it at the right time of year however and you should sell your property quickly and for the right price. So When IS The Right Time Then? Every property has a certain type of buyer it’s likely to attract. Your average Bishop’s Stortford apartment is probably going to appeal to first-time buyers, whereas a bungalow in Old Harlow might well appeal to retirees. Once you’ve established who the right kind of buyer is for your home then it all makes sense. Young Couples and Singles First time buyers often begin their first home search very early in the year. Perhaps they have spent one Christmas too many at home with their relatives and realised it’s time to move out! Their search often starts in January and February and they’re generally searching for apartments or terraced properties. When to Sell: If your property appeals to first time buyers, launch early in the year to get the best results. Families Family buyers often choose when term time starts to begin their property search.
When to Sell: If you have a family home you’re best launching your property in spring, early summer or autumn to get the maximum amount of interest. If you have a three bedrooms plus property that would appeal to a family then your best month to launch is September when the kids have gone back to school and parents can start viewing in peace. Older Couples Generally downsizing, this group generally prefers to look for a property when it’s warmer. Not wanting to venture out in rain or snow, bungalows and retirement properties can struggle to sell in the depths of winter. When to Sell: Launch your bungalow in the late spring through to early autumn to get the best chance of selling quickly. Generally there are a few times that are best avoided by every property owner, like before Christmas. Make sure you do your research and work out exactly who you are trying to attract before you go ahead and put it on the market. Launch your property at the time of year that’s best for your buyer and not for yourself. recruitment column What impact can you make in 10 seconds?
Research shows this is how long the average employer takes to make the decision if you are right for the job. So here at J&HRecruitment we have compiled our Top 10 Tips to help make your CV stand out in a crowded candidate market.
PPWrite a comprehensive profile - this is
the first impression and the most important part of any CV. Our advice is to include a brief overview of your career, your relevant qualifications and a line on what you are looking for. Your profile should be no more than 5 lines long.
PPWrite it in the third person - CV’s are
a professional document and should be composed in a way to reflect this. It shouldn’t be “I did this/I did that”, it doesn’t demonstrate your business acumen.
PPDo not include a photograph - everyone has
an opinion on this but we advise not to include a photograph. Employers are trained to focus on skill set not appearance, we’re often told by employers they remove them straight away.
PPInclude your contact details - this may
sound obvious but make sure you include your mobile number and home number, ensure both are correct (and make sure you have a voicemail set up). It’s also important to have a sensible email address.
PPKeep it relevant - we all like to show off what we have achieved and your CV is the perfect platform for that but it’s imperative to keep your CV significant to the role you’re applying for.
PPLayout - unnecessary use of complex words or hard to read fonts give a bad impression. People who use simple clear language are rated as more intelligent. Also, bullet point your duties for each role.
PPOne size does not fit all - tailor your CV to
the role you are applying for but try not to just produce a list of adjectives, reinforce your skills with examples.
PPHonesty is the best policy - everyone wants to get their CV noticed but if you exaggerate the truth you will get found out! Be proud of what you have achieved in your career, there is a job for everyone and there will be an employer that feels your experience is right for them.
PPCheck, check and check again - believe us, the amount of CV’s we see with mistakes is staggering so please proof read it and get someone else to double check it for you.
PPFill in the gaps - make sure your employment history is fully complete, if you took a year out to go travelling ensure you include it rather than leave a gap as employers worry if there are unaccountable dates.

central Surgery We’re doing well Words by Heather Riches, Patient Group
Recently the Observer newspaper reported on the banding of GP surgeries in East Herts and Uttlesford. This banding was introduced by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the bands being from 1- 6 (band 1 posing the greatest risk, and band 6 for those the least).
be found on the surgery website, Twitter or Facebook. NHS England and Healthwatch are encouraging patients to become more involved in supporting their local surgeries. If you wish to be involved, give feedback or are just interested in finding out more about the way Central Surgery works, a good place to start is by completing this year’s questionnaire. A copy can be obtained from the surgery, local chemists or on line at the surgery’s website.
Central Surgery in Sawbridgeworth was pleased to have been given the best ranking, band 6. Demands on the surgery have increased over the years and the staff at Central Surgery work hard to provide the best service to their patients, although hindered by severe space limitations.
Everyone is welcome to the Annual Open Evening on 5th March from 7pm which will be held at Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club.
Central Surgery has an active patient participation group which assist the Surgery in reviewing the way services are provided. Further details about the patients Participation Group and their activities can

HOBBIES - Painting Time to pick up a paintbrush By Kate McLelland
As children we are all happy to draw and paint but as we grow older we often lose confidence in our abilities. School is not the easiest environment in which to develop creative talent, so it’s not surprising that many of us abandon Art as a subject in our mid-teens. It’s encouraging to learn, however, that art gallery visitor numbers have massively increased in recent years and this seems to have inspired more people to revisit their artistic skills as adults. Once you have decided to have a go at painting, the first step is to choose the type of paint and brushes you will use. Do you want to create delicate watercolours or big, bold canvases? Do you admire artists who paint with photographic attention to detail or do you prefer abstract art, where the paint can be randomly poured, splashed or dripped onto canvas to create bold shapes and patterns? We’ve all used watercolour paints when young, so many people find it natural to return to that medium as adults. Watercolours may be versatile and easy to apply, but don’t expect instant results: you’ll need to spend time learning and practising the necessary techniques, otherwise your paintings may bear an unfortunate resemblance to the artwork you created back in Class 9C! Acrylic paints are similar to oil paints but easier to use: your work will dry faster and you won’t need to use solvents to clean your brushes. Acrylics can be mixed with water, so you can either paint with intense colour or dilute the pigment to produce transparent washes. This medium also dries to a robust finish: acrylic paintings can be safely rolled up without the risk of cracking.
22
Oil paints allow you to create wonderfully expressive images, but using oils can be a challenge for a beginner as you will need to dilute the paint with thinners (white spirit or turpentine) as well as adding a medium, such as linseed or poppy oil, to bind the pigments in the paint and help with the drying process. An oil painting should be built up layer-by-layer, but you must allow time for the layers to dry: it can sometimes take up to five days for this process and during that period you will be unable to work on the canvas. Fortunately you can now buy specially made fast-drying oils that will be touch dry in 24 hours or less. Make sure you have a variety of brushes available: round brushes are excellent for control and accuracy while flat brushes are great for edging and filling in areas. There are some useful online tutorials to help you develop your skills using water paints, acrylics and oils: www.wikihow.com has great step-by-step illustrated guides to get you started. Alternatively you could get face-to-face tuition at an adult education institute (your local library will carry a list of courses). Alternatively you can search for painting holidays at www.artcourses. co.uk. When you first start to paint the important thing is not to set unrealistic goals for yourself. It may be years before you feel confident enough to hang your work in a room, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the process. If you make fun and relaxation your primary reason for picking up a paintbrush, you can’t go wrong.

short story Percy comes for dinner By Jackie Breswter
Marjorie daydreamed as she stirred the bubbling pan full of her New Year’s Day casserole. The family were out watching the local rugby match, but would soon be home, cold and famished. She paused at the sound of Great Aunt Sophia making her way downstairs. This year Marjorie had drawn the short straw to have Sophia over for the New Year. She had arrived by train on New Year’s Eve carrying her musty handbag full of mystery false teeth, hairnets and used tissues. Last, but by no means least, in that cavernous bag was the black ceramic pot containing the cremated remains of Percy, her deceased husband. He was her constant companion. There were members of the family who had only ever known Percy as a black ceramic pot. He’d been dead for over twenty years and yet never missed a family occasion. Sophia, besides being rather absentminded, wasn’t really much trouble, and in many ways she tried to be helpful. She always offered to pop the kettle on or butter some bread, and Marjorie knew she should be grateful, but the kitchen was her domain and it felt uncomfortable to have another woman invading it. She was putting the plates in the oven to warm when Sophia came in carrying Percy. “Something smells nice”. She said, “Do you want a hand with it?”. She lifted the casserole dish lid and sniffed. “It’s all sorted Sophia, but thanks anyway”. “Would you mind if I make myself a cup of tea?”. “Let me do it for you Sophie, the kettle’s just boiled”. “I won’t hear of it, you’ve done enough, go and put your feet up”. Sophia began opening and closing cupboards so Marjorie decided to grab a handful of cutlery and beat a retreat to the dining room. Calmly she began to lay out each place setting. “I hope you don’t mind but I’ve added a bit of Percy to your stew dear”. Sophia called through the kitchen door, “It just needed a little something”.

“Thank you Sophia”. Marjorie called back. She was slightly annoyed. It wasn’t a stew, it was a casserole, and, interfering with another woman’s recipe was really going too far. She took a deep breath and folded a napkin. Then she stopped. What had Sophia just said? She flew back into the kitchen, to find Sophia happily stirring the casserole. Next to the stove was Percy’s pot with the lid askew. Marjorie gasped as Sophia raised the wooden spoon to her lips. “Aunt Sophia stop!”. She shrieked. But it was too late, Sophia slurped down the casserole greedily. “Mmm, just what it needed”. She licked her lips, then noticed Marjorie, “What on Earth’s wrong Dear?”. “Tell me you haven’t put Percy in the casserole?”. “Not Percy”. Sophia seemed bewildered. “Why on Earth would I do that, Dear?”. She held up a glass jar that Marjorie recognised from the back of the spice rack. “It was parsley, and just a teaspoon. Here, have a taste”. Sophia thrust the same spoon into Marjorie’s open mouth. The casserole now had a distinctly different tang, Marjorie thought, but wasn’t completely ruined. She made a mental note to throw that jar away, judging by the fusty taste it must be months out of date. She heard the front door open and the sound of six pairs of boots in the hall. “We’d better start dishing up Sophia”. She said. “Take Percy out of the way”. And it was probably for the best that neither lady noticed the seal on the lid of the parsley jar. It had never once been opened.

1. Bring a pan of water to the boil. Add the carrots and boil for 5 minutes until almost tender adding the cauliflower and broccoli florets for the last 2 minutes. Drain well and set aside. 2. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat. Add the paneer and mushrooms and stir-fry over a high heat for 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3. Add the onion to the pan and fry very gently for about 10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, ginger and chilli and fry for a further 2-3 minutes then stir in the Thai paste and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. 4. Pour in the coconut milk and bring to the boil then reduce the heat and return the paneer and mushrooms to the pan along with the drained vegetables, peas and tomatoes. Stir well and simmer gently for 4-5 minutes. Add the lime juice and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve garnished with sliced red chilli pepper and oregano leaves. TIPS: Paneer is an Indian vegetarian cheese which has a firm texture and goes particularly well with spices and garlic, chilli and ginger. You can use drained and cubed tofu instead, if preferred...

Gibberd Gallery Exhibition Emerging Talent 2015 Saturday 31st January 11am - 3pm 12pm - Presentation by Alastair Howe, Chairman of the Harlow Art Trust 1pm - Meet the Artists talk Harlow Art Trust is committed to supporting new talent and has selected three artists that are showing exceptional, exciting artworks full of innovation and promise. Abe Pardue is a Harlow resident artist who studied locally. He has recently been commended in our Open 14 for the painting Wall. We hope by giving these newly graduated artists an opportunity to exhibit we can nurture their development as artists whilst also showing visitors new innovative artwork. Each artist’s unique style has been celebrated in this exhibition and we want to offer visitors an opportunity to ask questions about the work and openly engage in discussion around the subjects and processes that have been used. We will be recording questions that have been asked during the exhibition which will then be posed to the artists at our ‘Meet the Artists’ talk on Saturday 31st at 1pm. You can book a seat on this talk by emailing gallery@harlowarttrust.org.uk.
ARTIST PROFILES Abe Pardue My work is at a point of transition from almost abstract paintings based on corners of rooms, light and shadow where I utilise a dampened pallette to more bright and figurative works. The earlier paintings are about stillness and the process of painting; influenced by Eastern Philosophical and spiritual teachings, the work was also motivated by moment to moment experiences, the process of painting and how it changes as well as the viewers relationship with the paintings.
my sketchbook which have then evolved into a painting. Berlin, oil on cancas, 2014
My recent paintings are of people from memory or photographs that I find visually striking. They are of either people I know or strangers that I have seen on the street that I have drawn in

Sarah Foyster
The Catch, oil on canvas, 2014
Sarah Foyster is an artist based in Norfolk, who recently completed a Masters Degree in Fine Art with Distinction at the Norwich University of the Arts. Her paintings explore physchological space, using abstracted figuration to reflect on feelings of anxiety, dislocation and isolation within our own unconscious. Sarah is concerned with the pyschological effects to the human condition, borne out of different physical and mental traumas. She examines the boundaries of the self and how external forces such as authority and control may cause such underlying anxiety. Her paintings are intended to be ambiguous, oblique and to capture the imagination. By examining such imaginary spaces of the psyche through the paint surface, she challenges notions of mental health, surveillence, modern communication overload and misinformation. Using a traditional medium of oils and through the effects of layering and fragmentation, an often absurd and uncanny narrative unfolds, as within a film still or characterisation within a novel.
Anwar Talukdar Anwar graduated from the Chelsea School of Art & Design in 2014 with a Ba Honours in Fine Art. An important aspect of my work is the craftmanship involved, the time-consuming and labour-intensive physical act of making. The structure I build can often retain the errors of their construction and traces of human touch. While this may appear clumsy or ill thought out, they are the marks left behind, a record or an index of the decision making process in how to evolve each piece.
mistakes sometimes made, can go into become the works themselves or push an existing piece in a direction not anticipated or planned. The work’s in this exhibition reflect the former. Process 1, Wood, 2014
I build in two distinct ways, one rigid and controlled, where growth is precise, led by a plan, whilst the other is more informal and improvised, where growth occurs organically, without rigid systems to guide it, where the element of chance may sometimes occur, or

kisses4kids step back in time charity fundraising ball Local children’s charity Kisses4Kids is asking the generous residents of Hertfordshire and Essex to help make its 1920s-themed ball a roaring success. The charity will hold its first ever ball on 14th March 2015, supported by housing and care provider Places for People, to raise much-needed funds to help make wishes come true for children with long term and life limiting illnesses, and their families, across Hertfordshire, Essex and London. Tickets are now available for the event, which will take place at Hunters Meet in Hatfield Heath, with organisers promising a night of old-fashioned twenties-style glitz, glamour and fun with cocktails, four-course meal, live entertainment, casino games, raffle and an auction. Kisses4Kids was established by Stacey Johnson, who having spent long periods of time as a teenager in hospital battling an inoperable brain tumour, wanted to do something to ease the boredom and brighten the lives of children and young people who had experienced illness and their families. Since becoming a registered charity in 2008, Kisses4Kids has helped hundreds of children with days out, family trips away and even a sensory room and outside play area at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Ball organiser and Kisses4Kids trustee, Sara Evans, first got involved with the charity when her daughter Evie, now 4, was in and out of hospital with a variety of lung and heart conditions relating to her prematurity.
institutionalised. Normal life takes a back seat as you spend your days and nights caring for your child and willing them to fight to live. “You don’t realise how much you need a family day, how much you just need to have some fun until someone comes along and offers it to you. Kisses4Kids sent us to Chessington Zoo for the day when Evie came out of hospital. It created some amazing memories for us and they’ve continued to support us as we bring up Evie and her sisters. “Creating happy memories is what Kisses4Kids strive to do for many families in the area. I’m so happy to be part of such an amazing charity, and hope to raise as much money as we can to help many more people.” Mary Parsons, group director at Places for People said: “We are committed to making a difference to the lives of people in the communities in which we work. We were touched to hear about the fantastic work this local charity is doing and wanted to help them raise funds so they can carry on helping families when they need it most.” Tickets for the ball cost £55 or £500 for a table for 10 and can be booked by phoning Sara on 07908 139883 or by email, saraevans@kisses4kids.org. uk. Those unable to attend but wishing to donate are asked to text Kiss44£ followed by the donation amount to 70070, or can donate via www.justgiving. com/kisses4kids
