THE
WELCOME
CM21
HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe June edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION The summer season of events begins in earnest this month and will last until September. I for one am really looking forward to everything that will be taking place; we have Fun on the Field on Sunday 14th June and then two weeks later there is Music in Garden (the garden of Roger Beeching MBE and his wife Jean) - can’t wait! Further afield, Bishop’s Stortford will be holding its annual carnival on Sat 20th June and the Gibberd Garden, in Harlow, will be hosting a jazz evening and also a CAMRA beer festival! I’ll be armed with my waterproofs: coat and leggings... always best to be prepared! And there’s plenty of events going on indoors too - take a look at our “what’s on” pages in the coming months to see if anything tickles your fancy! And don’t forget to tell us about your event so that we can help publicise them, either through the magazine or via social media. Together we can really make a difference. Finally, if you own or run a local business and wondered whether advertising in the CM21 Connection works - turn to page 6 and find out why you really have to be in it to win it!

keeping it local Local company Viking Solar installs £25k contract by advertising in CM21 magazine Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall Trust is rapidly becoming the centre of the community for the town, with new activities for all ages. Their success has enabled them to become more sustainable by investing in one of the largest local PV solar panels installations on the roof of their building. It will produce enough energy to power at least 6 local homes. The income that the trust will receive for the next 20 years from the governments “Feed-In-Tariff” will help the Trust become more sustainable in the future. After seeing their advert in CM21 Magazine, the Trust selected local company Viking Solar Ltd of Sawbridgeworth based on their knowledge, competitive price and the Trust ethos of, where possible, spending locally raised money on local businesses. The work has been professionally completed on time and on budget just in time to catch the recent sunny days, giving a great outlook, for the Trust and Viking Solar’s venture and CM21 advertising success! Peter Lee on behalf of SMHT John Furnace of Viking Solar Limited and Peter Lee of the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall Trust
We are thrilled to say that Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall’s new solar PV installation is now live, generating electricity to power lights and electrical appliances at the hall, as well as feeding additional power into the national grid. The project to turn Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall into an electricity generator is a real achievement and all credit should go to the trustees who initiated the project and especially Peter Lee who has led it. At Viking Solar we are really pleased to be involved in such a super renewable energy scheme at the heart of the Sawbridgeworth community, helping the town become greener and providing a source of income to aid the long-term sustainability of the hall. The Viking Solar team installed 60 panels on the south-facing roof to provide the 16.8 kilowatt system which should generate 15,558 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. This is equivalent to powering at least six Sawbridgeworth homes with all their electricity needs every year. Monies for the community project were raised by the Friends of the Memorial Hall combined with good management of the hall itself. The cost was approximately £25,000 and the initiative is expected to raise over £3,200 a year for the next 20 years through Feed-in Tariff generation and export payments as well as savings on the hall’s energy bills. John Furnace, Viking Solar Limited

local business people in person Name and Business: Ros Conway from Simply Fit - fitness and weight management classes. Where do you live? Chigwell in Essex. What’s your favourite local shop? That’s a hard question; I have too many favourites to name them all! What’s your favourite local venue? Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall where I hold a class every Thursday morning. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? It’s like a village and the people are so friendly. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I go to the gym and look after my grandchildren.
I set up my business because… I love teaching exercise and helping people to reach their goals and feel good about themselves, I was overweight when I was younger so know how it feels. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? Rebranding my business as Simply Fit. I had a Rosemary Conley franchise for 12 years which I really loved but that went into administration early last year, so I either had to close or continue on my own. It was worrying at the time but has been a complete success.

LOCAL CHARITIES Introducing: Home-Start - support and friendship for families
If you have a small local charity, non-funded or not-for-profit organisation you feel deserves some exposure contact us and we’ll see what we can do.
Home-Start is a local charity that supports ordinary parents in East Herts and Broxbourne who are going through challenging times. We are one of 9 schemes in Hertfordshire and are affiliated to Home-Start UK who provide training and support.
with getting out and about.
Being a parent, whatever your situation, can be very difficult, especially when children are young. Many parents feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the stresses of family life, particularly if their family and friends aren’t available to help out. For some parents it’s a particular struggle because they are also coping with problems such as postnatal depression, anxiety and low mood, their or their child’s illness or disability, challenging behaviour, relationship issues, isolation, bereavement, money worries or unsuitable housing. That’s when parents need support most and that’s when Home-Start East Herts can help. Our friendly parent-to-parent support is a simple yet effective way of enabling families to get back on track. A carefully selected and trained volunteer, who has parenting experience themselves, regularly visits a family in their own home, offering flexible and responsive emotional and practical support which can include being someone to talk to, helping and playing with children, reassurance, encouragement and motivation, help to find out about and access other local amenities and services and practical help round the house or
Our home-visiting volunteers are from different backgrounds and from various ages and stages of life but they are all trustworthy, friendly and understanding. All volunteers attend a preparation course before being matched with a family. They then take their own individual skills and experience to the families they visit. Volunteers often feel they gain as much as families, some getting experience which helps them find a job, others able to continue using their skills into retirement, all wanting to put something back into the community, usually because they either were helped or felt they needed help when their own children were young. You can find out more on our website www. homestarteastherts.org.uk, follow us on Facebook or Twitter or phone 01992 505584 to volunteer or ask for help.

property column Colour - a home sellers best friend... If you’re living in Sawbridgeworth and thinking of selling your home, you may have started thinking about ‘selling prep’. This is a term used by lots of estate agents in Sawbridgeworth and it refers to getting your home ship-shape and ready to sell. You might have been considering giving the garden a facelift, maybe even putting in an extension or a new bathroom or kitchen. There are so many options when it comes to adding as much value as possible to your home (read our post “How to add value and sell faster”) but believe it or not, adding a splash of colour makes a huge difference too. Here are our top tips for using colour to really show off your home for sale: 1. Give your front door some love Is your front door looking a bit shabby and in need of TLC? Giving it a fresh lick of paint not only makes your door happy but can drastically improve the look of the frontage of your property too. We find that blue, green and red are the best colours to go for if you want maximum impact. 2. Skirting board and ceiling touch-ups I know as a colour link this seems tenuous but giving your skirting boards and ceilings a fresh lick of white paint can have a surprising effect on the neat appearance of a room. We often neglect to pay attention to these areas but remember buyers look EVERYWHERE. 3. Small space? No worries! If you don’t live in an 8 bedroom mansion it can be hard to create the illusion of space, especially with all your bits and pieces floating about. Our top tip for cosy-sized homes is to keep your colour scheme light and bright. Magnolia, pale duck egg blue, salmon pinks and even pale greens and greys are all great if you’re
keeping up with interior trends. Banishing dark paint will illuminate your rooms and make them look bigger. 4. It’s not all about paint Adding colour doesn’t have to be about getting the paintbrush out. Adding contemporary wallpaper as a feature in a dining room or bedroom is on trend and is a slightly less messy way to give your rooms some personality on the cheap. 5. Colourful furnishings This is probably one of the cheapest ways to impress your buyers subliminally when they come to view your home, particularly if you live in a new build property. New-build tend to be decorated as a very blank canvas to appeal to as many people as possible, but this can come across as bland. So to push past the plain look, accessorise with bright scatter cushions, feature ornaments, bright flowers and lampshades to give your rooms a pick-me-up. It can be hard to know when to stop when it comes to preparing your home, so it’s best to ask a friend to help you focus on between 1 and 3 rooms that need attention the most. Adding a splash of colour can make you, and your potential buyers, feel happy even on a down day so try out some of these techniques and let us know how you get on! We’d love you to tweet us some pictures of your colour experiments to @PPropertyShop. Fancy a walk?
Bishop’s Stortford & District Footpaths Association By Daphne Wallace-Jarvis for BSDFA
Hi there! OK, Quiz time... Question: What does the BSDFA stand for? Answer: Bishop’s Stortford and District Footpaths Association. The BSDFA! The words to remember are - ‘AND DISTRICT’.... This local organisation embodies a wide local area across Herts & Essex. BSDFA has its roots dating back to 1957 - it is a multi-aged group who enjoy walking the very many and generous number of footpaths, bridle-ways, and bi-ways in our area and who wish to ensure they are well maintained and available FREE FOR ALL for the foreseeable future. Our area encompasses north Harlow, Stortford, Hatfield Heath, Stansted, Birchanger, Much Hadham, Little Hadham and all the super villages around and en-route to Saffron Walden. We walk twice a month, on a Sunday, in the morning, gathering for set-off at 10am sharp, so there is plenty of time after a 5-6mile walk to enjoy the rest of the day participating in other activities and being with the family. This is not an all-enveloping commitment, simply come when you can and join in.
banana and water if you wish, and we can normally accommodate a dog on a lead. As a bonus, sometimes there is a pub at our start/end point. We have some stunning local countryside, animals, plants and birds in the Herts/Essex borders which we will see, walk and talk through. Yes, all this, and your weekly exercise too. Remember we need to leave at 10am so allow sufficient time to park & change into boots and whatever! Come and see a buzzard in flight!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING BARBECUED RACK OF RIBS
2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip) 6 tbsp tomato ketchup 3 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp sunflower oil 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
PRE-COOKING
RIBS IN A PAN OF SIMMERING
WATER BEFORE PLACING THEM ON THE BARBECUE WILL ENSURE MELTINGLY TENDER MEAT EVERY TIME.
THIS
METHOD ALSO SAVES SPACE ON THE
BARBECUE AS THE FINAL COOKING TIME WITH THE SAUCE IS MUCH SHORTER.
SERVE
WITH A SPICY
CHUNKY TOMATO SALSA, IF LIKED.
1. Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface of the water. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool. 3. Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce. 4. Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill. TIP: Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes.

short story boat number six By Jackie Breswter
Barney secured the last of the pedalos, and gazed with satisfaction out over the boating lake. The ducks were returning to Smuggler’s Island and the water was as still as a tea tray. After four years as first mate, Barney had finally been trusted to take charge. This morning, Mr Vaughn, better known as Captain, handed over the cash tin. Muttering something about a trial run, possible partnership and avoid using boat number six, he’d staggered off for an all day meeting at the Dolphin. And what a busy day it had been. The late morning sun had scorched off the clouds and by midday a queue of holiday makers had stretched along the jetty. All he had to do now was lock the shed. He opened the door and noticed two flowery beach bags hanging on the peg. Barney’s heart sank. Customers must have given them to him to take care of, and he’d neglected to return them. Captain would grumble, but it might be overlooked considering the weight of the cash tin. He then remembered the customers. How could he forget them? With supreme lack of coordination, and fits of giggles, that pair of elderly ladies had climbed aboard their pedalo. He was amazed they didn’t get a dipping. Following that fiasco, they had pedalled around in circles singing ‘We are sailing’ before eventually disappearing around the side of Smuggler’s Island. He also remembered that he had put them in boat number six. A canary yellow two-seater pedalo, boat number six had been patched up more times than he’d had chip suppers. Captain had retired her at the end of last season. But Barney had wanted impressive takings and that meant putting every vessel to work. With a curious feeling of dread Barney studied the pedalos sitting calmly on the darkening water. As instructed he had lined them up numerically. There was boat number five, and next to it boat number seven. Boat number six was not in position. He quickly counted the boats, and counted them again. He counted them slowly just to be certain. Boat number six was missing.

On his first day in charge not only had Barney lost a vessel, he had also lost its crew. He dreaded the thought of a humiliating all night lake dredging. It was deep in places, but just how deep Barney had hoped never to find out. He glanced at his watch. He was expected in the Dolphin in ten minutes, but there was still time. He un-tethered a little rowing boat. With determined strokes he rowed out onto the lake. The ducks quacked with annoyance. The water was worryingly still. Then he heard a sound like a rusty saw. Backwards and forwards it went, slowly, deliberately, like someone lazily sawing wood for the fire. It appeared to be coming from the bulrushes along the banks of Smugglers Island. He peered into the reeds and saw a flash of yellow. It had to be boat number six, but where was its crew? “Ahoy there!” Barney called nervously. The sawing ended abruptly. “Is anyone aboard?” “Hello?” a shaky voice replied, “wake up Gert, we must have nodded off”. In the shadows the ladies rubbed their eyes and began to stand. “I don’t want to alarm you but you’re in a pedalo”, Barney called. “I’d advise you to sit tight”. It was with great relief that Barney towed boat number six home on her final ever voyage. All the while the ladies serenaded him with ‘We are sailing’ in booming carefree voices. Barney smiled, and joined in with the chorus.
