THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe July edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION The warmer weather (notice I didn’t say sunny or summer!) sees the continuation of our favourite outdoor events. The whole of Hertfordshire and beyond has a plethora of things to keep us busy in the run up to and during the summer holidays. Aren’t we lucky! Take a look at our community pages and also the what’s on section to plan your July - there’s lots happening and there are several outdoor concerts and plays to look forward to. Colour Me Happy 5k in support of Isobel Hospice takes place at the end of the month and I for one can’t wait for that - although haven’t quite figured out how to get home without contaminating the inside of my car! Could be very interesting! Before that, and a little further afield, is CAZFEST in Bishop’s Stortford. This will be my first experience of it and I can’t wait! So much to do! I am hoping the weather is kind but will be packing waterproofs just in case. I’d like to wish The Centre of Wellbeing all the very best for their official opening on 4th July. It will be Sawbridgeworths “one stop shop” for all things mind, body and spirit! Congratulations Claire! Did you know that if each of us spent £100 a year more on local businesses instead of chain stores, it would put an extra £3 million into our economy and create thousands more jobs every year? Where we can, let’s support local by keeping it local! Until next month, Lorraine

Author Interview In conversation with local writer Russell King, author of Face-Mum So, what is Face-Mum all about? Well, the title character is missing, which is at the heart of the novel. Her sons, Michael and Paul, both find different ways of coping while she is not at home and their dad struggles with his new role as lone carer. The book is told from Michael’s point of view, as his mum’s social media messages just aren’t enough for his emotional needs. This leads him to make some unwise decisions. It is an interesting title: what should we read into it? Again it is about what’s not there: Michael cannot face his mum and the details about what is going on in her life are a mystery to him. Social media can allow people to present a version of themselves to the world and that is what happens in this book. Who will enjoy this book most? This is an impossible question really as readers mature at wildly different speeds. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone beneath the age of nine, personally. My daughter who is nearly ten enjoyed it and she is an avid reader. I hope that the students I teach will enjoy it too - they may even notice a bit of themselves in there. And then, as Harry Potter proved, taste in literature can be quite universal. How did the novel come into being? One day, while pottering about, the idea for Face-Mum popped into my head, along with those ideal starting words “What would happen if..?” The first two pages were written within minutes. The next 168 were two years in the Published by As Ever Publishing Web: facemum.wix.com/site Twitter: @face_mum Facebook: Face-Mum

crafting but I always knew that the idea was strong enough. I just hope I have done it justice: readers will let me know, I am sure. Do you have any advice for budding writers? Yes, write something! Just like runners need to build up their muscles to improve their lap times, so will you need to practice to master your art. Don’t worry about it being perfect, just scribble a first draft and take it from there. Finally, what do you hope people will take from Face-Mum? That forgiving is an act of love! Russell lives in Bishop’s Stortford and teaches English at Passmores Academy in Harlow. FaceMum is his first novel and will be available in print and online from Monday 22nd June.

Pub & café Walks

IT’s your community

Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Summertime Treats From June to September, Down Hall Country House Hotel, a mile south of Hatfield Heath, opens its terrace to visitors. July’s walk, which needs OS map 183, could start or end with a drink there. Walk away from the hotel along the driveway, turn left at the end and follow the road downhill for about a third of a mile. Immediately after crossing a little brick bridge, turn left along a delightful path with trees on left. Where the trees end, follow this path right uphill and then turn right again following waymarks through field. Continue to follow waymarks straight on in this direction. Cross a footbridge and then turn left, right and right again around a field. Finally turn left towards houses to emerge onto road. Turn right along the road and fork left at the junction, past a thatched cottage. Turn right past Gibsons farmhouse, left along grassy path beyond, right along stream and then left over footbridge and up grassy bank beyond. Walk along the edge of two lakes, keeping the water on your right. Turn right at end of lakes onto track leading between buildings. Just beyond houses, turn left and immediately right along hidden, wooded path, following signs for “Forest Way”. At end of path, keep straight along a lane, turn right on road and left at sign for Matching Church. Follow this lane as it curves right and left around a pond. Before road swings left again, turn right on path around another pond and follow a grassy track between woods. At the end of a ditch with a line of willows, turn right, now following the “Stort Valley Way” with its dragonfly waymarks. Keep to right of small pond, over hidden stile, and out onto road. Turn left along the road to return to Down Hall. LOCATION:

Summer reading challenge Are hertfordshire’s children ready to enter the record breakers?

There’s an amazing adventure waiting for the children of Hertfordshire when they take part in the 2015 Summer Reading Challenge, Record Breakers, at libraries across the county. They can join in the adventure, simply by reading six books from the library. The Challenge starts on Saturday 11 July and runs until Saturday 5 September and children of all ages can collect a free starter’s pack from any Hertfordshire Library, including the mobile libraries, while stocks last. Participants will be rewarded with stickers when they visit their local library to talk to staff about what books they have been reading. If they complete the Challenge they will be invited to attend a special presentation ceremony to receive their medal and certificate and will have their name entered into a prize draw where they could win the chance to meet a real life author. A special launch event will be held at Welwyn Garden City Library on Saturday

11 July where there will be lots of free activities to join in with. Children can also visit www.recordbreakers.org.uk for more fun and games, and the chance to link with top authors and other children taking part across the country. Look out for other events happening over the summer including, and a special libraries day at the Butterfly World Project in Chiswell Green on 28 July. For more information, visit www.hertsdirect. org/libraries , phone 0300 1234 049, or drop in to your nearest library. Record Breakers, Summer Reading Challenge 2015 is produced by The Reading Agency.

1. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chopped onion over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, spring onions and carrots and fry, stirring, for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chilli powder. 2. Tip all the beans into a large bowl and roughly mash with a fork. Stir in the onion mixture along with the remaining ingredients and mix well to combine. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Divide and shape the mixture into 8 burgers. Cover and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. 4. Heat the rest of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown (you may need to do this in two batches so add a little more oil, if needed). Drain on kitchen paper then serve in toasted burgers buns with spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes. TIP: The uncooked burgers freeze well, just place on a lined baking tray and freeze until solid then pack away into freezer bags. To cook from frozen, place the burgers on a lined baking tray, brush lightly with oil and bake for 25-30 minutes at 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6 until golden and piping hot.

gaston house picnic concert West End stars perform songs from stage and screen in support of Home Start Harlow On Sunday 19th July West End stars Kate Coysten and Greg Castiglioni will be performing songs from stage and screen in a fund raising picnic concert not to be missed at Gaston House, Little Hallingbury. Local girl Kate, a former head girl at Bishop’s Stortford College, has appeared in numerous top West End shows including: Les Miserables, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Sister Act, Wizard of Oz, Stephen Ward, Made in Dagenham and this month starts in Mamma Mia. Kate and Greg became friends during their appearance on Les Miserables and have performed together in many concerts both in the UK and abroad. Concert promoter Geoff Petts commented: “Not many people can say they have worked almost continuously in the West End with stars like: Michael Crawford, Whoopi Goldberg, Lesley Garrett to name just a few. I am delighted that Kate and Greg will be performing to help raise much needed funds and awareness for Home Start Harlow.“

Home Start Harlow Being a parent, whatever your situation, can be very difficult, especially when children are young.
